Travel tips and information for everyone from world travelers to road trippers to armchair travelers. Hotel and airline information, money-saving tips, attractions and destinations, and basic traveling suggestions. Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:10:00 +0200 Lanzarote lies just 62 miles off the coast of Saharan Africa and this speck of Spain is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. This location – on the same line of latitude as parts of Florida and Mexico - creates an enviable year round climate that is characterised by extremely low rainfall (on average of just six days per year) and temperatures that rarely fall below 20c – even in the winter months.
As a result, the island is a popular holiday destination all year round, attracting over one million visitors from the UK and Ireland in 2007. Drawn to Lanzarote´s ninety plus beaches – the vast majority of which boast fine golden sand. Philosophers once speculated that the island was a remnant of the lost continent of Atlantis. In pre-Spanish times Phoenician Traders dubbed it the Purple Island – as a lichen called Orchilla that was used to make purple dye was once grown here in abundance. And during the Middle Ages Lanzarote was often referred to as one of the Fortunate Islands – due to this clement climate. Today, Lanzarote is best known as the Island of Fire, as a result of the worlds longest ever volcanic eruption - lasting six years from 1730. Which covered around one third of the island in a layer of lava that today gives parts of Lanzarote the almost primeval appearance of a land that has just been formed – and is often likened to the surface of the moon. For such a small island Lanzarote is big on attractions. Offering visitors much more than just beautiful beaches and volcanic vistas alone. Thanks in no small part to the efforts of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique. Who not only fought to save Lanzarote from the sort of over development that has blighted other sunspots. But who also created some of the most unique tourist attractions imaginable – such as the Jameos Del Agua and the Mirador Del Rio. As a result Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO protected biosphere in 1994. The first island in the world to enjoy such status. Lanzarote also boasts enormous natural beauty and great contrasts in scenery. From the arid lava fields of the Timanfaya National Park in the South, through to the green and verdant Valley of 1,000 Palms in the North. And as the island is so manageably small it is easy to hire a car and discover Lanzarote´s many delights. For more in-depth information about Lanzarote and a free 112 page Guidebook just visit www.lanzaroteguidebook.com Thu, 17 Apr 2008 21:08:00 +0200 We found a great free online tool to create a website for anything you might be interested in, and others can contribute and help you as well. Using a free wiki, select your topic and set up your website.
Travel is a great category for a wiki website, because people from everywhere can add their comments, photos, information, or anything else to enhance your website while you sit back and enjoy their efforts. By letting others help you build your website, you can have valuable travel information from places you aren't able to visit yourself. Take advantage of all your friends' vacations (and their friends as well!) by creating a network that will grow your website much faster than you could ever do on your own. Even better, many people live in areas that are considered vacation spots or travel destinations by someone else. Locals can provide good insights about restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and lots of other local flavor that is off the beaten path, and will help your website develop an authentic flavor that no one person could possibly create on their own. You can have a particular focus ... some people have wikis about travel to a specific country, traveling with kids, or traveling and food. One of the most interesting features we noticed on some travel wikis are "Top 10 lists." You can create a particular category, or allow visitors to make up their own. Things like "Top 10 strange foods" or "Top 10 weird local customs" or "Top 10 travel disasters" are a lot of fun. More practical lists might include "Top 10 things you don't think to pack but probably should" or "Top 10 ways to amuse the kids on the road." It's fun and easy, and you can customize your wiki in any way that you like. Go ahead and try it out, and create a site that you will enjoy being webmaster for as well as one that can be useful to fellow travelers! Wed, 16 Apr 2008 07:43:00 +0200 New Zealand is the perfect destination for adventurous, nature-loving travelers. While Aukland is a huge cosmopolitan city offering cultural museums, diverse shopping, pampering spas, and much more, it also holds treasures for those who are inspired by nature. The Brick Bay Sculpture trail is the perfect marrying of culture in natural surroundings, Butterfly Creek houses 700 free-flying butterflies and walk-through aviary and aquaria exhibits, the Aukland Zoo offers up-close experiences with a wide variety of animals, and some of the world's best gardens are open to the public. Within minutes of most Aukland hotels are breathtaking beaches, serene islands, and majestic natural scenery. The capital city of Wellington offers balloon rides over the picturesque countryside, canoing or kayaking along local streams, or rock climbing and other extreme outdoor activities at the Makahika Outdoor Pursuit Centre. Many park trails, walkways, public gardens, and shoreline walks are accessible to Wellington hotels. Enjoy mountain biking or hiking in the nearby mountains and wild areas. And Christchurch is THE garden city! Don't miss the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. You'll also want to visit Orana Park, which is the largest wildlife reserve in New Zealand. If you love the kiwi (and who doesn't?!), you'll want to visit them at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve where there is a large daytime kiwi viewing area. Bottle Lake Forest Park offers more active travelers the opportunity to hike, mountain bike, or trail ride in a production forest. Other parks and gardens include Victoria Park, Ports Hills, Hagley Park, Travis Wetland, Horseshoe Lake, Halswell Quarry Park, Bexley Wetland, the Groynes, Styx Mill Conservation Reserve, Spencer Park, and Riccarton Bush, with a wide variety of outdoor sights and adventures to be enjoyed. When seeking Christchurch hotels, look for one near one of these refreshing destinations and enjoy your vacation! Tue, 01 Apr 2008 12:32:00 +0200 One of my favorite travel destinations is located in South Alabama, just outside Mobile. Bellingrath Gardens is close enough for my family to visit on a fairly regular basis, and the spring is normally our favorite time of year there. The 905 acre estate boasts over 250,000 azaleas, hydrangeas, fuschias, Easter lilies, and much more.Begun as a fishing camp by Mr. Bellingrath, the available acres appealed to Mrs. Bellingrath and she began planting azaleas, camellias, and other southern favorites on the property in the early 1900's. It was in the spring of 1932 that the couple opened the grounds to the public for an afternoon, and they were overwhelmed by the response. In 1934 they opened the lovely grounds to ongoing public visitation. Changing with the seasons, Bellingrath has been likened to "a beautiful woman with a different dress for every week of the year." Summer roses draw crowds, fall color is led by chrysanthemums, the holidays feature loads of poinsettias, winter is the time of camellia blossoms. But the spring stars are the azaleas that form walls of lovely pink flowers bordering the long winding paths that work along the lovely estate, the perfect backdrop for photos and breathtaking up close or from a distance. Shown here are the Azalea Trail Maids, southern belles in traditional gowns that stroll the estate among the lush azalea plantings. Another wonderful spring feature is the Japanese garden with its graceful wisteria.Unfortunately, this year is not ideal for azaleas. The flowers are lovely, but will not be lasting as long as they normally do, so the window of opportunity is very limited. However, Bellingrath is still worth visiting at any time of year, and even if you miss the azaleas this year, you should place Bellingrath on your calendar for next spring, and consider visiting the see the many thousands of other lovely flowers in bloom. Generally, the azaleas start to bloom in late February and are at their peak during March. Admission prices range from $5.50 to $26, depending upon the age of the visitor and whether you wish to view the gardens only or to also tour the home and/or ride the riverboat cruise. ![]() So lovely, the Gardens have been the subject of many works of art. You can visit a collection by Richard Earl Thompson featuring Bellingrath Gardens listed at secondnatured.com (which by the way, supports nonprofit environmental organizations and helps to preserve natural beauty with the income from purchases made from downloaded art). Canvas prints are also readily available from other sources. (Please note: we are not affiliated with these or other art sites and cannot vouch for them but found them through an online search.) Tue, 18 Mar 2008 21:26:00 +0100 Spring in the South is one of the most beautiful times of year, with blooming azaleas and grasses greening far earlier than in northern climes. For more than half a century, the folks in Fairhope, Alabama have enjoyed the beautiful weather at their own arts and crafts event every year, the Annual Arts and Crafts Festival.
This year's 56th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival will feature almost 250 exhibitors from all over the US at the juried show. Live entertainment is on the bill, and all the usual festival foods are available to enjoy as you stroll along the wide aisles and enjoy oooooo-ing and ahhhh-ing over stunning and unique works of art. Among the many awards given to the annual event are the inclusion in top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. Because the event attracts so many visitors, it can be difficult to park nearby. But free parking is available in many locations, and there is a shuttle service provided to the grounds for only $1. If you're planning to visit from outside the area, you might want to enjoy the local beaches during your stay. There are also a number of nice State Parks as well. Tue, 18 Mar 2008 20:33:00 +0100 Some of the longest-running Broadway shows of all times have been wonderful family events. Enjoying live shows as they grow up helps children develop a wider appreciation of the arts, and is an important aspect of the cultural education of youngsters whenever it is possible to include such events. While tickets can be expensive as a family affair, consider purchasing Broadway Tickets online, which can result in substantial savings.
Some of the best shows for families include Mary Poppins, Wicked, and The Little Mermaid, and Lion King. Mary Poppins is Disney's classic rendition including all of the songs you remember and love, and your children will be singing for weeks: "Chim-chim-cheree," "Just a Spoonful of Sugar," and the tongue-twisting mouthful "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." The cast is starred by the uncanny nanny that is practically perfect in every way, and supported by the loveable chimney sweep that "does what I likes and likes what I do." Wicked is the story of how two girls meet in the Land of Oz, long before Dorothy arrives there. The smart, green-skinned, and generally misunderstood girl ends up being called "The Wicked Witch of the West while the pretty and ambitious Glinda trades on her popularity. Children and adults alike will enjoy this twist on the Wizard of Oz, but it is recommended for children over 8 (and children under 4 will not be admitted).![]() The Little Mermaid will transport you to a magical kingdom under the sea, where a young mermaid yearns for a different life but must defy her father and escape the machinations of an evil sea witch to try to win the prince of her dreams. The music featured is some of Disney's most popular, including "Kiss the Girl," "Part of Your World" and the Academy-award-winning "Under the Sea." Lion King is a brilliant masterpiece in its own right, with extraordinary sets and costuming that will instantly draw you into the pageantry of a royal Lion family in the African plains and have you on the edge of your seat during the dramatic moments. This captivating production has been described by many as "Broadway's most spectacular show."Visit online ticket brokers for these and other family events. You can see their current broadway show tickets here. It is often even possible to secure tickets for events that have already been sold out as well. Go here to view their sold-out seating for broadway tickets. Take advantage of money-saving offers on tickets and treat your family to a cultural masterpiece they won't soon forget, and use the money saved to buy a treat at one of the local restaurants afterwards. Tue, 11 Mar 2008 07:36:00 +0100 The Gold Coast is Queensland's most popular tourist destination. Themed attractions include Sea World, Warner Brothers Movie World, Dreamworld, White Water World, and Wet 'n Wild Water World. The popular Darling Harbour destination in Australia is home to Sydney Wildlife World and Sydney Aquarium -- one of the world's largest aquariums. Local museums include the Powerhouse Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum. The Chinese Garden of Friendship is another favorite attraction. Star City Casino hosts the Lyric Theatre and the Star City Theatre. Annual events include the Hoopla street theatre/acrobatic festival. If you are looking for quality Darling Harbour Hotels to enjoy any of these attractions or one of many others, the perfect choice is the Star City Hotel. The Star City Hotel is a 5-star hotel located within the casino complex, just a few minute's walk from Darling Harbour. Guests enjoy easy access to everything Star City and Darling Harbour have to offer. The Turbines Health Club has an indoor/outdoor pool, sauna, spa, and fitness equipment. A variety of dining choices are available with a number of restaurants within walking distance, offering everything from Astral Restaurant's fine dining atmosphere to a casual noodle bar. Budget-conscious travelers to Sydney can also find excellent accommodations in cheap Sydney hotels as well. One of the best values is the 3-star Y Hotel Sydney offered from a low rate of only AUD$35.00. They Y Hotel offers 120 comfortably appointed rooms, conference facilities, an on-site cafe, and a convenient location in Hyde Park. Guests can walk to a number of nearby restaurants, shops, and local attractions. Tue, 11 Mar 2008 04:38:00 +0100 Travelers have more options than ever for accommodations. You can, of course, contact the hotel chain of your choice and make reservations for you trip. A second choice (and one we often feature) is a hotel broker, which is a great way to save money because they offer specials that are generally below any you can secure directly from the hotel yourself and usually feature a wide range of hotels -- and sometimes other types of accommodations -- to choose from. Today we are featuring another opportunity for travelers seeking vacation rentals. A travel accommodations directory allows homeowners to directly list their rental property, so you don't pay the extra fees associated with a middleman's services.
Travel accommodations directories can offer a very wide range of accommodation types to suit every traveler and every budget. From small studio apartments or condos up to huge homes suitable for multiple families, almost any size group can find suitable lodgings. Owners tend to take a lot of care in designing their vacation rental properties as well, in order to make them attractive to prospective clients, and you can usually count on more personality as well as more privacy, tailored to your needs. Prices are usually much more reasonable than those offered by hotels, while many properties are more spacious and have even more amenities. The Orlando vacation homes being offered are a good example. With Orlando being a prime US travel destination, and Disneyworld being one of its major attractions, there are lots of Disney-themed properties that rival (or even exceed!) Disney's own resort hotels. Take a look at "The Magic Palace" vacation home, for example. Three of the bedrooms are themed in Pooh, Princesses, and Mickey Mouse, with the bathrooms being equally decorated. This 5-bedroom, 5-bath, 3000sf home is only 2 miles from Disney, and features a heated pool on the lanai along with a jacuzzi, fitness room, game room, washer and dryer, full kitchen, high speed internet, widescreen TV, playstation, and much more. Large enough to accommodate several families, rates range from only $169 per night. Another popular US destination is Lake Tahoe. Searching for a Tahoe vacation rental, we found everything from cozy cabins decorated in a woodsy style perfectly suited for a quiet romantic getaway up to huge chalet homes with breathtaking vistas and innovative design ideas that bring the spectacular beauty of the surrounding forests and Lake Tahoe indoors with glass walls. The variety of lodgings available from travel accommodation directories makes searching for your travel reservations a fun part of planning your vacation, and the savings are an added bonus! We highly recommend you check this option when planning your next trip. Tue, 04 Mar 2008 08:19:00 +0100 Most of our destination posts focus on international cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris, London, Rome, Tokyo, and others, but we want to feature something a little closer to (our!) home this time.![]() New York City, also known as the Big Apple -- home to the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and Times Square. Just the name of it brings excitement, and the image of a high-rise skyline, sparkling in the night, in a city that never sleeps. New York City is a world unto itself, with dining that features cuisine from all over the world, ranging from street vendors to chic and exclusive restaurants that require months-ahead reservations (and probably that much time to save in order to pay the bill!). Diversity of cultures is seen as nowhere else in the world. Even the city holidays reflect the variety of peoples living in New York, from the Hindu Festival of Lights to the parades representing diverse ethnicities including Irish, Puerto Rican, Chinese, West Indian, and more. Some of the premier museums are located in New York, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Visitors can also enjoy the American Museum of Natural History, and many other museums showcasing the sciences, arts, history, and world cultures. New York's Broadway is nearly synonymous with the word "theater" ... the city is one of the most important theater locations in the world. Music aficionados can enjoy Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and much more. The Lincoln Center for Performing Arts is housed in New York City, and the city is home to professional performing companies in each of the performing arts.New York City is also a prime destination for those who enjoy shopping -- the city offers major stores and designers. Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Madison Avenue, Sak's Fifth Avenue, Tiffany's ... what more could any shopaholic ask for? World-famous designers and high fashion, interspersed with discount fare, New York has something for everyone. Before you go, check out New York City guides for useful information. You'll want to know about the weather, local hospitals, driving, tipping customs, safety tips, and more. You should also book your hotel before you go. While the prices vary tremendously depending upon where you wish to stay, an accommodations broker can offer prices significantly lower than the hotels themselves in most cases. The best of these will offer detailed information about each hotel online so that you can avoid unpleasant surprises upon arrival. For example, we decided to take a look at the Waldorf Towers. (Why not? Might as well think big and have fun!) We viewed photos of the hotel from outside, as well as those of a number of types of rooms. We learned of its proximity to Park Avenue, Grand Central Station, and Fifth Avenue, as well as Times Square and the Empire State Building. We learned such details as the height of the ceilings in the room, the type of surfaces in the bathrooms, the kind of linens on the beds, and exactly which amenities are included, as well as details such as check-out time and more. (We also learned that they are booked up well in advance!) Tue, 04 Mar 2008 04:58:00 +0100 We looked at a variety of air mile credit cards and their reviews, and found some good sites to compare air mile credit cards as well as other types of credit cards. To see the features of various plans and the cards themselves, you can view a credit card comparison between easyJet, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and other credit card travel reward plans.
One of the programs caught our eye -- easyJet, Citibank's new low-cost airline miles reward plan that offers some extra perks. The card rates are competitive enough (16.9% APR) with no annual fee. The earnings are among the highest with up to 3 miles earned for every £1 spent (depending upon where you spend), and a bonus of 4,000 miles is available if you spend £250 within the first 3 months. The interesting feature of the easyJet card is the way in which miles are redeemed. Rather than saving miles until you finally have enough to take the flight you want, consumers can use the card any way they wish and, whenever they are ready to fly, purchase their ticket using the card. Any miles earned up to that point will be immediately rebated back to the cardholder as a savings off of the flight they purchase, so there is no need to wait. You can read a full review of all the details in this credit card guide. Just click on the easyJet link and you can read a full description of the travelers that will benefit most from the card, and how to use it to its fullest advantage (as well as situations where you might want to use a different card) and how each use affects your mileage accrual. Speaking of which, the credit card guide site is quite useful itself, especially since it analyzes the different types of features for each card and then tells you how to use the card to your best advantage, and which card would better serve you under specific circumstances. Just knowing how the foreign transfer fees interact with mileage accrual rates and how to find a good card for cash advances, for example, can save you money in the long run if you consider how you tend to use credit cards and select the right card for your personal needs. Tue, 26 Feb 2008 23:52:00 +0100 The dreary cold rain that has been drenching our area for weeks has me dreaming of warmer climes, and what better place to turn one's attention during this gloomy time of year than sun-drenched, bright, and tropical Hawaii ... the exact opposite of what we're experiencing here!
We decided to do a little virtual travel for your benefit and ours, and ended up on the resort beach of Poipu in Kauai, Hawaii. One of the reasons we were drawn to this location in our surfing is the variety of beaches available on the island. Poipu Beach was recently listed as the #1 beach in the United States, but it actually includes a number of beaches. Secluded coves offer protection from the wildest surf and give beginners (that would be me!) a perfect place to learn to surf, or to learn to snorkel. Speaking of snorkeling, or diving in general, Nukumoi Point is the reef home of an entrancing collection of tropical fish. Snorkelers and divers can visit face-to-face with angelfish, striped damselfish, butterfly fish, tangs, Moorish idols, and more as well as sea turtles. You can find even more nature adventure in Poipu. Shipwreck Beach is set apart from the rest of the island by a rocky coastline that is criss-crossed with nature trails. Walking along the cliffs at dawn is the experience of a lifetime. Past Shipwreck Beach you can find Mahaulepu Beach, a pristine beach perfect for enjoying nature as you explore tidepools and their inhabitants amid the wild and windswept beauty. Mahaulepu IS wild, and not generally safe for swimming with its crashing surf, but a perfect place to enjoy nature, secluded and seemingly forgotten.![]() Another great feature of the island is Spouting Horn, a lava tube that spews salt water up to 50 feet into the sky. Be sure to visit at sunset, when the setting rays reflect off the water to create an iridescent rainbow of wonder. This is a fantastic opportunity for photographers. I always like to check on the realities of travel to an area, and often I am pleasantly surprised at the costs for accommodations, attraction tickets, and other necessities. Sometimes I discover dream hotels, amazing rental homes, or even castles that are as much fun to read about as the destination. This time, I found both when I searched for Poipu vacation rentals. When I looked for Poipu Condos, I was pleasantly surprised to find units available from only $105 per night at the Waikomo Stream Villas. Not expecting much for that price, I followed the link and was surprised to find that the unit mentioned had over 1,000 square feet of tastefully decorated, sun-lit and clean interior space with a fully equipped kitchen and even a nice outdoor area furnished for outdoor relaxing and entertaining. The TV is not huge but hey, you're in Hawaii, so why are you worried about television? Curious, I decided to check the other end of the spectrum. Where could I stay if money was no object? My choice wasn't the most expensive place available, but rather only about 1/3 the cost of the highest-priced Poipu home rentals listed. I would chose the Sunset Makai Hale for its amazingly-textured and detailed interior, including lava-rock columns and luxuriously crafted wood. Many of the walls are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, so you can open them and BE in a tropical oasis just off the beach, listening to the waves rolling in. I even loved the driveway! A shaded pool runs the length of the lanai, and lush, tropical plants encompass the estate, adding to the feel of being tucked away in a tropical oasis. THIS must be Hawaii living at its very finest. Now I'm ready to pack my bags and go! Mon, 25 Feb 2008 05:34:00 +0100 ![]() We found a great source for all kinds of tickets in the UK (and events outside the UK as well). If you are interested in either buying or selling tickets for concerts, sporting events, theatre tickets, or highly exclusive tickets, be sure to check this site. They are a go-between service for buyers and sellers, offering a sense of trust and security to what has traditionally been a somewhat risky avenue of exchange. Buyers can search the various categories for the tickets that interest them. For example, if you are interested in attending a concert, check that heading. Concert tickets UK lists a variety of music types, including rock & pop, hard rock/metal, alternative & indie, r&b/urban soul, country & folk, rap/hip-hop/reggae, jazz & blues, club & dance, world music, and more. You can also find a "hot list" on each page. When buyers find the ticket they want to buy, they can purchase with confidence, because the service guarantees that the buyers will receive their tickets in time before the concert or other event. In fact, if buyers don't receive their tickets in time, they will provide the buyer with equivalent or better tickets, or refund the purchase price. Sellers also enjoy protection by knowing the money is safely kept so that they can go ahead and send tickets immediately, ensuring that the tickets will arrive on time, and the sellers can relax in knowing that they will be paid for their tickets. This is really a win-win situation for everyone. ![]() A wide variety of tickets are offered on the site. If you are interested in Neil Young Tickets, for example, you can choose from a concert at the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh, from among six dates at the Apollo Hammersmith in London, or from two dates at the Manchester Apollo. We were interested to see that even exclusive tickets are sometimes offered here. There are exclusive football tickets listed, and there is a category for exclusive fashion show tickets as well, although none are available at the moment. However, there is a newsletter service that visitors can sign up for in order to receive notices when exclusive tickets become available. This service really is very interesting and has a lot to offer both buyers and sellers who use it! Fri, 22 Feb 2008 06:33:00 +0100 Those interested in a career relating to the travel industry have a lot of options to choose from. One of the most widely available hospitality industry programs is that of Hotel and Restaurant Management, such as the program offered by Gibbs NY. Programs such as this combine aspects of tourism as part of that degree, while other programs may offer separate concentrations in tourism.
Tourism as an industry is focusing more and more on eco-tourism and sustainable tourism. The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as having the aim of balancing the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism as it relates to the local culture in a way that continues to benefit the local community. Environmental resources can provide key elements that make an area attractive to tourists, and should be respected and preserved so as to continue the industry. The health of the local environment is equally important to members of the surrounding communities, as well as to flora and fauna and for the general goal of maintaining bio-diversity. Maintaining the socio-cultural aspects of the local community is another important goal, as this is another key feature drawing tourists to an area. It is also to the culture's own advantage to remain distinctive and retain their heritage and traditional values. Economic factors are often aimed at providing employment for local community members through the tourism service industries and promoting growth of local businesses through tourism. In many cases, local crafters and artisans also benefit greatly from an economic standpoint from tourism. All of these are key goals for the local community, and efforts should be made to balance each of these factors with the industries, activities, etc. that provide entertainment, lodging, and other services to tourists. Thu, 21 Feb 2008 18:08:00 +0100 Cruise vacations can provide an excellent value for your vacation dollar. Instead of spending time in airports or driving from one destination to another, re-packing all of your luggage and moving to a new hotel room, cruises can provide the convenience of a luxury hotel room that travels with you to new destinations to be explored, as well as offering a variety of ways to relax and enjoy your time on the cruise ship itself.
European cruises are another wonderful opportunity for travelers to experience the best of vacations. European vacations often involve traveling from one city to the next, with large blocks of time devoted to travel, waiting in lines, and repacking. Cruise vacations to Europe redeem all that wasted time, allowing you the convenience of remaining in a luxurious room, taking all the amenities along with you, as you visit your ports of call. It's almost like bringing fantastic destinations to your hotel, instead of having to travel to them! Rome, with its architectural masterpieces such as the Cathedral of St. Peter, the National Museum offering some of the world's foremost archaeological treasures, and of course the Roman Colosseum is a popular destination, as are Amsterdam, Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Flaam, Edinburgh, Brussels, Tangier, Lisbon, Copenhagen, and many others. Depending upon the itinerary you select, you may visit The Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Scotland, England, Spain, Belguim, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, or others. The ability to customize your choice of vacation destinations is a wonderful advantage of having many cruise lines to choose from. Mediterranean cruises are another exceptional option for travelers seeking a variety of experiences amid an atmosphere of relaxation. The sunny Greek Isles offer an opportunity to enjoy beaches and local cuisine famous the world over, as well as visit some of the most outstanding architecture the world has ever seen. Rome is again on many Mediterranean itineraries, as are other ports in Italy. Exotic Turkey with its ancient culture, site of the first known human habitation, beckons you to experience historic sites, many especially important in religion. Malta's megaliths, medieval dungeons, and mythical Calypso's Cave invite anyone with a taste for mythology or medieval history to stand in the midst of the stories. A wide variety of other ports may include Morocco, Spain, France, England, Croatia, and others. An especially favorite Mediterranean destination is often Egypt, home to the Great Pyramid and the mysterious Sphinx, as well as a great number of shops featuring exotic and glittering goods. This is just an overview ... your cruise vacation is almost unlimited in its possibilities. Check into the options available and choose a vacation that meets your wildest dreams, and do it in style aboard a cruise ship! Sun, 17 Feb 2008 05:10:00 +0100 A free service for owners of vacation properties provides unexpected benefits for travelers. A press release in December of 2007 announced a service by Domegos.com that offers owners of vacation properties to list those properties for free, in the hopes of building the largest vacation rentals directory on the internet. Property owners will not have to pay a listing fee, an annual fee, or pay commission on properties booked. This new generation service also lets property owners take advantage of more features, such as a photo gallery, interactive map, showing dates for availability, and much more. The directory allows the owner of a vacation home to provide a wealth of detailed information to potential vacationers, increasing the desirability of the rental property and the likelihood of rental.Travelers of course benefit greatly from this service as well. In fact, Domegos.com focuses on helping holiday travelers to find the perfect vacation rental to suit their needs. The additional information available for each vacation home is invaluable in helping travelers to decide where they would prefer to stay. Free services for the property owner should translate into savings for the traveler as well. As a matter of fact, when we checked out the service, we did find an amazing deal. Our family has often traveled to Orlando to visit Disneyworld, so we checked for Orlando vacation home rentals. There is a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath luxury townhouse just a few miles from Disney in a gated community that offers heated indoor and outdoor pools, jacuzzi, steam sauna, cable, wireless broadband internet, PS2 with games, DVD library, well-equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, deck, patio, fitness room, playground, and tennis court as well as being located on a pond area. This home sleeps up to 8 guests and is available for prices ranging from $95 to $125, which is a fantastic price for this location, never mind all of the extras. Altogether there were more than a dozen rentals available near Disneyworld, many just as outstanding in the value they offer as the one we detailed above. I know where I'm going to book my next Orlando vacation! This seems to be a fairly new service, and so available locations are somewhat limited at the present. However, we would really like to encourage anyone seeking a free vacation rentals directory for their vacation home to look into this service, which will help the listings to grow. And if you are planning a trip, be sure to check here for accommodations. You may find an amazing deal like the ones we discovered in Orlando! Two towns offer restaurants, shopping, and Cabo San Lucas accommodations to fit any budget. Despite the excellent services and vacation potential, Cabo is not overcrowded and travelers can enjoy a serene seaside vacation. Anglers are especially drawn to Cabo, seeking the big catch. El Arco, a spectacular natural rock formation, can be visited at the aptly named Land's End. Golfers can enjoy staying in a Cabo San Lucas vacation rental at Jack Nicklaus' Ocean Course in Puerta del Sol. The adventurous can enjoy all sorts of water sports, while families play on the beaches and build sand castles. For those who enjoy a more active vacation, there is plenty to do both on and off the beach. Travelers can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving in the warm waters, or the excitement of parasailing or surfing. Rock climbing is another popular local sport. If you are looking for a quiet vacation, perhaps with some privacy for a honeymoon or anniversary vacation, look into some of the Cabo San Lucas villas. Located on the beach, they are the perfect place to enjoy romance and privacy. Whatever you're looking for, Cabo san Lucas has something to offer. And this is the perfect time to start planning a vacation to visit there, as the end of winter approaches and the weather is at its peak. Enjoy! Wed, 06 Feb 2008 13:05:00 +0100 ![]() We wanted to feature something a little different this time for our romantic Valentine's Day series. For a new twist on romance, we are heading to the Aquitaine area of France. Our first suggestion is to rent an apartment and relax in medieval Agen. Just as you'd expect from a medieval region in France, couples can explore castles from the Renaissance or visit secluded monasteries as well as enjoy the breathtaking historic architecture, such as the Cathedral de St. Caprais or tour art galleries and museums. However, we would like to spotlight the Fontirou Caves, found in the Lot Valley. Dramatic stalactites and stalagmites glitter in this maze of subterranean grottoes and caverns, punctuated by draperies, curtains, and columns of limestone throughout the seven chambers that make up the cave system. This surreal underground landscape has yielded various prehistoric articles, including the fang of a sabre-toothed tiger. After strolling through the dreamlike (and if you want to hold your beloved close to you, spooky!) caverns, couples can emerge into the sunlight to visit a charming mini-golf course in a woodland setting. If you want to add extra spice to your Agen visit, go during September for the Foire d’Agen. You'll have to deal with crowds, but the fair includes many thrilling rides, interesting exhibits, animal shows, concerts, and other entertainment. We want to encourage travelers to seek out a vacation that is out of the ordinary, find new places to explore and exciting things to do ... you'll add spark to your romance at the same time! Fri, 01 Feb 2008 12:52:00 +0100 We also want to mention the romantic Emerald Isle, a jewel veiled among the mists of the Atlantic. Because of Valentine's Day this month we are featuring dreamy destinations for honeymoons, anniversaries, romantic holidays and more, so for this post we are focusing on Ireland's misty and magical shores, picturesque countryside, and historical charm. The fairytale land of Ireland has been the location of many medieval movies, partly because of its many historic castles. Not just vacant and cordoned-off visitor's sites, many of Ireland's castles have been restored to luxury and offer accommodations that will make visitors feel like kings and queens, with sumptuously appointed rooms befitting royalty, rambling estate grounds, and attentive staff. Imagine lady fair being swept off her feet by her dashing prince in the elegantly restored ballroom of a grand castle. Or together exploring spacious grounds and surrounding deep forests astride fine mounts. All of this and more help to make the Emerald Isle the perfect spot for couples seeking a relaxed, romantic holiday. The best way to experience Ireland is to take time to delight in local charms rather than rushing about and standing in lines. Many couples prefer to concentrate on western Ireland, which is often called "the real Ireland." Destinations such as Kerry, Mayo, Clare, and Galway are favorites. If you do want to visit larger cities while there, you may want to consider Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Waterford, and Derry. Cork is especially convenient, being in the southern part of "the real Ireland" but still offering some big-city appeal.![]() Whatever part of the lovely Emerald Isle you choose to visit, we hope you will enjoy your travels and find lots of secluded romantic spots to bring you closer together. Any of these destinations would be perfect for a Valentine holiday vacation. Royal Caribbean also offers other destinations that are more out-of-the-ordinary for travelers who want something unique in a cruise vacation. Other popular destinations include Alaska and Europe. Sat, 26 Jan 2008 04:52:00 +0100 Land of the Midnight Sun, Scandanavia experiences daylight for almost all of the time in June and July. Being so close to the poles, summertime means being bathed in sunlight all of the time. The opposite is true in winter, when the region experiences Polar Nights ... a couple of months in midwinter when the sun barely shines at all. Full of natural wonders and beauty, there is plenty to attract visitors to the two major Scandanavian countries of Norway and Sweden year-round.One of the things put on your "don't miss" list if you are visiting Norway is the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. They are not always visible, but one of the best places for viewing in Scandanivia is Tromso, Norway. Another major reason to visit Norway is the skiing ... there are a number of major ski resorts in Norway that are considered among some of the best in the world. Whether downhill, cross-country, or any other kind, Norway is a great country for skiing enthusiasts! Whale watching offshore is another popular draw for tourists to visit Norway. Another major Oslo attraction is Tøyenbadet Water Park, which includes a swimming hall, waterslide, a number of open-air pools, children's pool, and sauna as well as an indoor climbing wall. Sweden is unique in that citizens have voted on and named the "Seven Wonders of Sweden" ... their own version of the Seven Wonders of the World. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a popular destination for world travelers. If you're planning to visit, don't miss one of Stockholm's major attractions, Djurgården, which translated into English means "Game Park." With over 10 million visitors per year, Djurgården is an island located in the center of Stockholm with many parks, events, tourist attractions, and interesting sights. One of these is the Vasa, a warship which sank in 1628 and is now on display as a museum allowing visitors to view from six levels. Tue, 08 Jan 2008 23:14:00 +0100 Germany continues to be one of the finest travel destinations we can recommend, for a number of reasons. Walking down the quiet cobbled roads of quaint villages make you feel as though you just stepped into a Brothers Grimm fairy tale (less the evil witch!). The deep, dark forests - such as the famous Black Forest - bring to mind more exciting tales. Fairy tale castles are fun to visit as well ... the countryside makes a wonderful backdrop for family travel photos that could be set to a medieval or fairy-tale theme in your scrapbooks. For those who like beer, Germany is of course famous for that, as well as for a wide range of sausages, chocolate, and other foods. As for me personally, I love German Shepherd dogs and would be thrilled to visit kennels housing some of the most outstanding dogs in the world. For that matter Germans love their dogs and believe in training them well and bringing them along as companions. Germany and Austria are also home to a number of large cities that offer a full range of activities of modern interest as well. Some destinations to consider include Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Berlin boasts the Bradenburg Gate, the fascinating architecture of the dome of the Reichstag, and a treasure trove of museums, among other attractions. Munich offers some of the most charming and dream-like architecture ranging from minarets to castles fit for any princess, as well as a number of museums with focuses ranging from beer to art to to paleontology to festivals to BMWs. Frankfurt is home to more modern architecture but no less a museum mecca with world-famous dinosaur and natural history exhibits, Jewish and Bible museums, museums dedicated to money, art, history, architecture, and even one dedicated to letting visitors experience the world through senses without seeing. Vienna boasts Belvedere Palace, the Burgtheater (National Theatre), the Karlskirche cathedral, and the Hofburg, which was built as a magnificent castle. View the city from above in the Danube Tower, enjoy thrilling rides at the Prater Fun Fair, visit the Schönbrunn Zoo, shop Naschmarkt. There is much to enjoy in any of these cities, and many others of Germany and Austria. If you are planning to visit Germany, check hotel rates for Germany Hotels (or in German, Wien Hotels). By offering you the best rates from many different hotels, everything from budget accommodations to luxury 5-star hotels, you are able to select the hotel that most appeals to your tastes as well as your budget, and get a better rate than if you had contacted the hotel directly. Tue, 08 Jan 2008 05:59:00 +0100 Serviced apartments are another option for travel accommodations, and are especially well suited for families on vacation or for travelers who plan to stay in an area for a greater length of time. Serviced apartments offer some of the conveniences of hotels, such as provided linens, etc. and maid servicing (on variable schedules), and of course the ability to choose any duration of stay at the destination of your choice. Some additional benefits of serviced apartments are the spaciousness of the accommodations compared to hotels. The cost is usually less as well, giving the traveler the most value for your vacation dollar. When staying for longer periods of time, travelers will appreciate the home-like amenities, allowing for more independence and the ability to take care of a variety of basic necessities conveniently (such as cooking and laundry facilities). Serviced apartments offered for travelers are typically conveniently located within walking distance of shopping, dining, and other establishments. Frequently amenities include pool and sauna access, as well as other luxurious benefits. Travelers seeking accommodations for either pleasure or business would do well to check into serviced apartments as one option. Travelers to Australia should check for last minute as well as year-round deals offered on serviced apartments from CheaperThanHotels.
