Joyce was he was called up to the Majors from AAA Toledo for the second time this season while Magglio Ordoñez was on the disabled list.Congratulations Matt!! Tue, 15 Jul 2008 14:47:00 +0200 Here's a video from mlive.com featuring Magglio Ordoñez and his rehab appearance with the Whitecaps last night.
Enjoy!!
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 14:05:00 +0200 Sorry about the lack of updates. There really hasn't been much to write about.
There is some HUGE news right now. While the Detroit Tigers are resting up during the All-Star break, right fielder Magglio Ordoñez will be rehabbing with the 'Caps tonight at Fifth Third Ballpark. This will be the second time this season that a current Detroit Tiger will rehab with the Whitecaps. For more info, go to the Whitecaps official website. Fri, 27 Jun 2008 14:26:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps recently split their 4 game series in Fort Wayne with the Wizards.
On Monday the 'Caps lost 7-0. They only managed 4 hits. Whitecaps pitching allowed 11 walks. Tuesday night the Whitecaps won 7-6. Ronnie Bourquin had a great game. He was 2-4, scored 2 runs, and drove in 3 runs. Once again the Whitecaps were shut out, losing to the Wizards 8-0 on Wednesday. West Michigan batters only had 3 hits in the game. Thursday afternoon West Michigan won 6-5. Justin Henry and Jordan Newton each drove in 2 runs. Ronnie Bourquin doubled twice. Starting pitcher Alfredo Figaro won for the ninth time this season. Noah Krol saved his tenth game. The Whitecaps are back at Fifth Third Ballpark tonight. The Lansing Lugnuts will be in town for a four game series. Game time tonight is 7:00pm eastern. Tue, 24 Jun 2008 14:19:00 +0200 After clinching a playoff spot in the first half, the West Michigan Whitecaps are off to a crummy start in the second half. They have lost 4 of their first 5 games so far.
I won't go into any details because there's not a whole lot to say about these games. The 'Caps lost 3 of 4 from the South Bend Silver Hawks. On Thursday they lost 6-1, 5-4 on Saturday, and 9-1 on Sunday. West Michigan's lone victory came on Friday night, 8-5. The road trip continued for West Michigan in Fort Wayne. In game one, the 'Caps lost again, this time 7-0. They only managed 4 hits. They also committed 3 errors. Whitecaps pitching also allowed 11 walks as well. Game two of the series is 7:00 pm eastern tonight. The Whitecaps announced that Joe Tucker is back from AA Erie. They've also announced that catcher Adrian Casanova is going to Erie. Catcher Angel Flores is back with the 'Caps after a brief stint at Erie. Thu, 19 Jun 2008 16:35:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps have announced that three recent Detroit Tigers draft picks will join the ballclub. Catcher Alex Avila, pitcher Brett Jacobson, and outfielder Andy Dirks will get their first taste of pro ball with the Whitecaps.
Alex Avila is a left handed hitting catcher. He spent his college days at the University of Alabama. He was a fifth round pick in the '08 draft. He is the son of Detroit Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila. Brett Jacobson is a right handed pitcher. He went to Vanderbilt University. He was a fourth round pick by Detroit. So far he's the highest draft pick that has signed with the Tigers. Andy Dirks is a left handed outfielder. He's a product of Wichita Sate. He was an eighth round pick of Detroit. He was a college teammate of Whitecaps closer Noah Krol. In case you didn't know the Midwest League All-Star Game was on Tuesday. The West was victorious, winning 5-4 in 10 innings. Chris Carlson started at first base for the East. He had a hit and drove in a run. Kyle Peter was 0-3. Alfredo Figaro pitched an inning, allowed 2 hits, and walked a batter. Jon Kibler pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed 2 hits, and an earned run. Here's some bad news. Chris Carlson broke a bone in his left hand after being hit by a pitch at Tuesday's All-Star Game. He's expected to be out at least 8 weeks. That definitely hurts the ballclub. He'll probably be back just before the playoffs. Mon, 16 Jun 2008 04:09:00 +0200 The Whitecaps will enter the 2008 Midwest League playoffs as the first half wildcard winners. Losing to Fort Wayne 8-4, coupled with a Lansing Lugnuts blowout of Midland secured the first place finish for Lansing, with the Whitecaps officially winning the wild card.
Fort Wayne jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning, and West Michigan found themselves playing catchup the rest of the afternoon. Three Whitecaps had two hits in the loss, Justin Henry, Hayden Parrott, and Jordan Newton. One of Netwon's hits was a home run, his second of the year, in the seventh inning. Newton's homer was the only extra base hit of the game for West Michigan. Matt Hoffman got the start for West Michigan, he pitched three and a third innings, taking the loss. Hoffman allowed two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out five. Brandon Hamilton pitched four and a third innings of relief following Hoffman. Hamilton allowed five earned runs on six hits, while walking two, and striking out five batters of his own. Kelvin Cedano next pitched a scoreless third of an inning, giving up a hit and striking out a batter. Finally, Andrew Hess pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out a batter. The Whitecaps will now enjoy a well deserved break, with the All-Star game taking place on Tuesday in Midland. We wish all the West Michigan players playing in the All-Star game the best of luck! Box Score and Game Log. Sun, 15 Jun 2008 23:16:00 +0200 With a 6-3 victory over the visiting Fort Wayne Wizards on Saturday night, the Whitecaps managed to secure themselves a playoff spot for the 2008 season. Where they finished in the first half rankings, however, was yet to be determined. Pending on Sunday's results, West Michigan could either clinch first or second place for the first half of the season.
The Whitecaps jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and never really looked back from that point, opening things to a 6-0 lead after five innings, surrendering three runs late. Scoring in the first inning came thanks to back-to-back singles by Audy Ciriaco and Kody Kaiser. Ciriaco's single scored Justin Henry, who reached base with a one out single of his own, and Kaiser's single brought home Roger Tomas, who drew a walk in the at-bat following Henry. West Michigan added three more runs in the third inning. Audy Ciriaco knocked in his second run of the night, with another single, as did Kody Kaiser, his on a groundout. The third run of the innings was hit hime by Jordan Newton, as he singled home Ciriaco with two outs. Jordan Newton led Saturday's attack with three hits, Kyle Peter, Chris Carlson, and Audy Ciriaco all had two hits. Adrian Casanova got his first double of the year, in the fourth inning, which eventually led to him scoring the final Whitecaps run of the game. All-Star pitcher Jon Kibler picked up his sixth win of the season, with seven strong innings of work. Kibler struck out six, while allowing just one earned run on four hits. His ERA this season is an outstanding 2.17. Rudy Darrow pitched an inning and a third in relief of Kibler, he gave up on run on three hits, while walking two. Noah Krol earned save number eight, with two thirds of an inning of scoreless work. Box Score and Game Log. Sat, 14 Jun 2008 15:12:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps moved one step closer to a playoff spot with their 5-0 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards last night.
Whitecaps pitching was dominant. Mauricio Robles made the start. He pitched 3 innings, allowed a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. Then the rain came. The game was delayed an hour and thirteen minutes. The rain was intense for a few moments, but then stopped, and then the awesome Fifth Third Ballpark grounds crew went to work and made the field game worthy. Because the delay was long, Robles was shut down, and Manny Miguelez followed in relief. Miguelez arguably pitched his best game of the season. He pitched the final 6 innings, allowed 0 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3 batters. According to the Whitecaps website, it was the first time that Whitecaps pitching tossed a one hit, nine inning, complete game shut out, since Luke French threw a 1-hitter in July of 2006. Following the game MiLB.com released an article about Manny Miguelez's awesome relief appearance. The Whitecaps offense was great last night. Kody Kaiser had a huge triple in the 8th and drove in 2 runs. Roger Tomas had a hit and a RBI. Chris Carlson had 2 hits and drove in a run. Adrian Casanova also had a hit and a RBI. The Whitecaps currently hold a one game lead over the Fort Wayne Wizards for a first half playoff birth. The 'Caps can clinch that tonight with a win. Game time at Fifth Third Ballpark is 7:00pm eastern. Box Score & Log Fri, 13 Jun 2008 19:18:00 +0200 Last night the West Michigan Whitecaps completed their four-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts, winning three of four games. The series victory was very important because it puts the Whitecaps in a tie with Fort Wayne for the first half wild card playoff spot.
As Potthole mentioned in an earlier post, the 'Caps won on Monday 4-3. The Whitecaps then won two of the final three games. On Tuesday West Michigan lost 2-0. Lansing got their runs very late in the game, and the pitching for both ballclubs was solid. The only thing that I'd say was of note was Brandon Hamilton's 6 innings of shutout ball and his 5 strikeouts. Wednesday night the Whitecaps won 4-2. Starter Alfredo Figaro won for the eighth time this season. Roger Tomas, Chris Carlson, Audy Ciriaco, and Ronnie Bourquin each had a hit and an RBI. Thursday night the Whitecaps won a 10 inning pitchers duel 1-0. Paul Nardozzi allowed 5 hits and struck out 6 batters in 6 shutout innings. Wilton Garcia followed with four shutout innings of his own and won for the fourth time this season. The 'Caps got their winning run when Adrian Casanova's sacrifice fly brought home Kody Kaiser. Tonight the Whitecaps will host another important series with the Fort Wayne Wizards. As I mentioned earlier, both teams are in a tie for the first half wild card spot in the Eastern Division. Game time is 7:00 pm eastern at Fifth Third Ballpark. Thu, 12 Jun 2008 02:13:00 +0200 Recently there was an article from the Detroit Free Press featured Whitecaps lefty starting pitcher Jon Kibler. They discuss his success this season, as well as his time at Michigan State University. In case you didn't know, Kibler was also named to this year's Midwest League Eastern Division All-Star team.![]() Speaking of the All-Star team, Kyle Peter was recently added to the Eastern Division squad. This comes from the promotions of Casper Wells and Joe Tucker to AA Erie. Peter is the sixth Whitecap to be named to the all-star team. Joining Peter in Midland on Tuesday the 17th will be Jon Kibler, Alfredo Figaro, and Chris Carlson. Congratulations!! Tue, 10 Jun 2008 04:16:00 +0200 Following a weekend which saw weather play a role in many of the games scheduled in Midland, the Whitecaps came home after being on the road for the past eight days.
Coming into Monday's action, West Michigan trailed Lansing by three games in the Midwest League East Division standings. With a win on Monday, that lead was brought down to two. With a sweep of the four game series, the Whitecaps can find themselves in the division lead. The Lugnuts jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Whitecaps were able to keep them off the board for the remainder of the game, all the while slowly clawing their way back. After tying the game with two runs in the eigith, West Michigan scored the winning run with one out in the ninth. Four Whitecaps had two hits in the game, Kyle Peter, Justin Henry, Chris Carlson and Jordan Newton. Roger Tomas, Chris Carlson and Joaquin Guzman each had an RBI. For Carlson, it was his team-leading 35th RBI of the season. Andrew Hess got the start on Monday night. He pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. He did not get a decision. Kelvin Cedano and Wilton Garcia each pitched two innings of relief. Cedano gave up only one hit, but walked three. Garcia allowed no runs and no hits, walking one and striking out one. Noah Krol got the victory, pitching a scoreless ninth, where he walked one and struck out the side. Both teams will square off again on Tuesday night. Gametime is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Box Score and Game Log. Mon, 09 Jun 2008 14:26:00 +0200 It was a "loony" weekend in Midland. The Whitecaps split their four games with the Great Lakes Loons. There were several thunderstorms that passed through Michigan, and that definitively effected the series.
I don't have a whole lot of info to report. MiLB.com doesn't even have all of the box scores from the series posted. So here's a brief writeup. Friday's doubleheader was postponed because of the crummy weather. When Saturday came around the 'Caps lost game one of the doubleheader 7-6. The second game of the doubleheader saw West Michigan take a 7-0 lead before the inclement weather caused the game to be suspended. On Sunday the game was resumed and the 'Caps were victorious, winning 10-1. A while later on Sunday, the Whitecaps were able to win again 8-3. Overall, I'd say a split is successful. The Lansing Lugnuts are on deck next for West Michigan. A four game series begins at Fifth Third Ballpark on Monday Night. Lansing is currently leading the Eastern Division. Fri, 06 Jun 2008 21:15:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps have recently announced that outfielder Casper Wells and infielder Joe Tucker have been promoted to AA Erie. Taking their place on the Whitecaps roster are third baseman Hayden Parrott and shortstop Joaquin Guzman. The promotions are the result of earlier transactions. When Clevlen and Hollimon were promoted to Toledo to Detroit, former 'Caps Wilkin Ramirez ('05) and Max Leon ('06) were promoted from AA Erie to AAA Toledo. Congratulations to all the Whitecaps that have been promoted today!! Fri, 06 Jun 2008 18:49:00 +0200 According to mlive.com, former Whitecaps Clete Thomas ('05) and Ramon Santiago ('00) have been placed on the Detroit Tigers Disabled List. Taking their place is Brent Clevlen ('03) and Michael Hollimon ('06).Michael Hollimon was apart of West Michigan's 2006 championship team. He was the captain, starting shortstop, and a Midwest League All-Star. This will be Hollimon's first call to the Major Leagues. Michael is versatile, and his role with Detroit will be utility infielder. Congratulations Michael!! Fri, 06 Jun 2008 14:07:00 +0200 Last night the Great Lakes Loons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-3 at Dow Diamond in Midland.
Whitecaps pitching had a rough night. Matt Hoffman (not the BMX guy) made his first start of the season last night. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, a homer, and struck out 3 batters. Brandon Hamilton followed with 3 innings of his own. He allowed 7 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and struck out a batter. He was the losing pitcher. His record is now 0-4. Kelvin Cedano finished with 1 1/3 innings, walked 3, and struck out 2 batters. The offensive output was minimal. Jordan Newton doubled and scored a run. Justin Henry also doubled and scored a run. Angel Flores and Cory Middleton each drove in a run. Box Score & Log Thu, 05 Jun 2008 23:14:00 +0200 Before I get into details about Wednesday night's game, I would just like to quickly announce that I am back. The wedding was fantastic, as was the honeymoon. I caught a nasty cold immediately upon return, which knocked me on my butt for the past couple of days, but that is passing, and all is well once more. Ok, no onto the action.
With two down in the ninth inning, West Michigan was hoping for extra innings against the home team Dayton Dragons, but a walk, followed by a double, spoiled any thoughts of late-inning heroics. Down by two coming into the seventh, the bats of the Whitecaps came alive. Justin Henry hit a one out double, his eighth of the year, and quickly moved over to third on a passed ball. Kyle Peter, the batter at the time of the passed ball, wound up drawing a walk, putting runners at the corners with one out. Jordan Newton then proceeded to club his first homer of the year, bringing home all three West Michigan runs. The shot netted Newton his 15th, 16th, and 17th RBI of the season, and gave the Whitecaps a one run lead. The lead was short lived, however, as the Dragons answered back, scoring a run in their half of the inning, the third inning in a row in which they scored one run. All three of these runs came against All-Star pitcher Jon Kibler, who went 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out four. Wilton Garcia took the loss, allowing one run on two hits, in his 2.1 innings of work. He also struck out two, while walking one. The loss brought Garcia's record to 3-2 on the year. Aside from the Jordan Newton home run and Justin Henry double, Chris Carlson and Joe Tucker were the only other Whitecaps to get a hit. Carlson was 1-4 with a single and a strikeout. Tucker went 2-4 at the dish, and also had his second stolen base of the year. Kody Kaiser, who reached base with a walk in the game, stole his 13th bag of the season, in the first inning. The Whitecaps will face the Great Lakes Loons tonight, in Midland. It will be the first of a four game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Box Score and Game Log. Wed, 04 Jun 2008 13:31:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps won a rain-shortened game last night against the Dayton Dragons 5-2.
Andrew Hess made his first start of the season last night. Lauren Gagnier was supposed to start, but because of transactions in the organization, Gagnier made a spot start for AAA Toledo. Last night's game went only six innings. Andrew Hess pitched 4 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, a homer, and struck out 2 batters. He didn't figure in the decision. Mauricio Robles pitched th final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed 1 hit, and struck out 4 batters. He was the winning pitcher. Shortstop Audy Ciriaco had a nice game. He doubled twice, scored a run, and drove in 3. Chris Carlson was 2-3 and drove in a run. Justin Henry had a hit, scored a run, and drove in a run. Box Score & Log Lauren Gagnier's spot start was a success in my opinion. He pitched 4 innings, allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run, walked 5, and struck out 5 batters. He didn't figure in the decision. He may not have got the win, but the Mud Hens did win 7-2. That sounds pretty good to me. Nice job Lauren! Wed, 04 Jun 2008 00:13:00 +0200 Today the West Michigan Whitecaps announced that five players have been selected to this year's Midwest League Eastern Division All-Star Team.
Chris Carlson, Casper Wells, Joe Tucker, Alfredo Figaro, and Jon Kibler will be apart of the game at Dow Diamond in Midland. The game will be on June 17. First baseman Chris Carlson was selected to start the game. Congratulations guys!! Tue, 03 Jun 2008 14:11:00 +0200 The West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 10-6 last night in Dayton Ohio.
It was a see-saw battle between both ball clubs. It seemed that every time one team would score some runs, the other team would follow with some of their own. The Whitecaps pitching staff came through in a big way yesterday. Starter Manny Miguelez only lasted 3 2/3 innings. He allowed 5 hits, 4 walks, 3 earned runs, and struck out a batter. Paul Nardozzi followed with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed 3 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, a home run, and struck out a batter. Wilton Garcia followed with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He was the winning pitcher. Rudy Darrow pitched the 8th inning, allowed 1 hit, and struck out a batter. Noah Krol pitched the ninth inning. He allowed 1 hit, a walk, and struck out a batter. For the second straight game the offense put ten runs on the scoreboard. Chris Carlson had another huge game. He was 2-5, hit a 2-run homer, and drove in 3 runs. Casper Wells hit a 2-run homer as well. Audy Ciriaco doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run. Kody Kaiser was 3-5, doubled, scored and drove in a run. Roger Tomas was 3-5, scored 2 runs, and drove in a run. Box Score & Log Mon, 02 Jun 2008 00:34:00 +0200 After losing six games in a row, the West Michigan Whitecaps broke out in a big way defeating the Dayton Dragons 10-0 on Sunday.
Sunday's game was a great combination of hitting and stifling pitching. Manager DePastino changed the batter order hoping to spark the offense. That's just what happened. The 10 runs nearly added up to the total that the 'Caps scored during their losing streak. Kody Kaiser had a great game. He was 2-5, doubled, scored a run, and drove in 3 runs. Chris Carlson hit a 2-run homer. Justin Henry was also great. He was 2-5, homered, scored 2 runs, and drove in 3. Six of the nine batters had at least one hit. On the hill for West Michigan was Alfredo Figaro. He was dominant. Figaro went the distance, limited the Dragons to 3 hits, and struck out 2 batters. MilB even wrote an article about it. Box Score & Log If you're looking for a little write up about the 5-1 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday, forget it. The 'Caps were dominated, and Chris Carlson hit a solo homer. Yep, that's about it. Box Score & Log Sat, 31 May 2008 13:08:00 +0200 The Wet Michigan Whitecaps are playing some rough baseball right now. On Thursday the 'Caps lost 7-3. On Friday night they lost 6-1. The streak is at 5 games.
On Thursday morning Lauren Gagnier made the start for the 'Caps. He pitched 6 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, a home run, and struck out 5 batters. He was the losing pitcher. His record is 1-5. Wilton Garcia followed with 2 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, and a strikeout. Rudy Darrow pitched the 9th inning and allowed a hit and an earned run. There wasn't a lot of offense. Casper Wells doubled and homered. Roger Tomas and Ronnie Bourquin each had a hit and scored a run. Box Score & Log Jon Kibler made the start for West Michigan on Friday night. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 8 batters. He took the loss. His record is now 5-2. Paul Nardozzi pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, a walk, a home run, and struck out a batter. Casper Wells was the offense for West Michigan. He hit a solo homer in the second inning. There's nothing else to say about the offense. Box Score & Log Following Friday nights loss, the Detroit Tigers made a couple roster moves. According to the Whitecaps official site, catcher Joe Bowen and pitcher Santo Mieses were sent to June camp in Lakeland. Left handed pitcher Matt Hoffman will join the Whitecaps today. Wed, 28 May 2008 22:53:00 +0200 On Wednesday afternoon the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 8-3. The loss is West Michigan's third straight.
Lefty starter Manny Miguelez took the hill West Michigan. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowed 8 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 walks, a home run, and struck out 3 batters. He was the losing pitcher. His record is 1-3. Three more pitchers followed Miguelez in relief. Mauricio Robles pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed 1 hit, a walk, and struck out 2 batters. Santo Mieses followed Robles. He pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed 3 hits, 3 earned runs, a walk, and a home run. Noah Krol pitched 1 1/3 innings, and struck out 2 batters. The Whitecaps actually held a lead in the game, but couldn't put together a rally once the lead was lost. Chris Carlson had 2 hits, including a solo homer. Jordan Newton had a hit and drove in a run. Ronnie Bourquin walked twice and drove in a run. Joe Tucker doubled and scored a run. The Whitecaps will play South Bend again tomorrow. Tomorrow's game time is 11:00 am eastern. Wed, 28 May 2008 13:21:00 +0200 On Monday Whitecaps infielder Roger Tomas was named Midwest League Player of the Week. In six games last week he was 11 for 20, which works out to a .550 batting average. Tomas is also currently leading the team with a .359 batting average. As far as I'm concerned, Tomas' highlight of the week was his game winning hit on Friday night against Dayton. I was fortunate enough to be at the field that night to witness that. Tomas is the fourth Whitecap this month to be given the award. If you recall Jon Kibler won the award last week. Ramon Garcia and Alfredo Figaro were the winners before that. According the the Whitecaps official site, this marks the second time ever that Whitecaps players have won the award four straight weeks. In June 2000, Tommy Marx, Calvin Chipperfield, Cody Ross and Neil Jenkins were all named Midwest League Player of the Week. Congratulations Roger!! Tue, 27 May 2008 00:13:00 +0200 On Memorial Day the Dayton Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-0.
