Subject: Great Plains Consultants and Integrators with Tech emphasis Posted: Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:51 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Consultants and Integrators with emphasis in Technology Alba Spectrum Microsoft Dynamics GP functional and technical consulting requires strong backing in technology experience, background, training and certification. Modern ERP consultant should be familiar (or be capable to involve fellow consultants) with industries, managerial and financial accounting, be reasonable good in reports design, system modification, have some knowledge and be aware about specific programming techniques and customization tools. We would like to introduce our company to you, GP user in your organization for advanced technology challenging projects: Dexterity customizations, Crystal Reporting (based on SQL Stored Procedures and Views), eConnect eCommerce programming, integrations (including EDI, GP Integration Manager, SQL Scripting and eConnect). Here is the introduction: 1. GP Software Licenses Sale. If you are in the beginning of your ERP and MRP selection, then we are happy to come through your business requirements, select Great Plains modules to be purchased and implemented and complete Sales phase 2. GP Implementation phase. Here you need legacy accounting data conversion and migration to Dynamics GP (often just beginning balances and master records, but sometimes complex historical data migration is required). Next step is user training and going into pilot phase, when you maintain two systems in parallel for one month: your legacy ERP and Great Plains, comparing financial statements to get comfort level in going to final switch to GP in production 3. GP Integration with legacy applications. Often we see EDI (or Electronic Document Interchange) requirement, especially if your organization participates in EDI ordering from large vendors and suppliers. In the case of Great Plains Integration tools are GP Integration Manager, eConnect, SQL scripting, Microsoft Dexterity 4. GP customization projects. Here you may already have GP implemented in the past and you need version upgrade for your Great Plains Dexterity custom module, where original GP Dex developer is no longer around. You can call us, we should be capable to recover and upgrade your custom module Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains Consultant for Challenging Projects Posted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:56 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Consultant, specializing in Technically Challenging Projects Alba Spectrum Microsoft Dynamics GP implementation, data conversion, reports design, user training, integration with legacy system and possible modifications and customizations should be entrusted into the hands of professional certified Dynamics GP consultant. Great Plains functionality is targeted to mid-size companies and this ERP application is not intended for self-implementation in house. If you are looking for establishing new relations with GP consultant, we are happy to introduce you our company 1. Consulting Methodology. ERP implementation and support methodology is applicable to Great Plains consulting, however there are certain specifics, related to GP technology, intended vertical solutions, and others. Great Plains Software Dynamics was introduced in earlier 1990th as GP Dexterity application. Dex requires special consideration when you do version upgrade, move application, program customization, and even troubleshoot your GP system 2. Consulting Expertise. We carry multiple industries experience and advanced certification, plus we support our consulting practice with our Great Plains Dexterity software development factory 3. Local presence. For onsite implementation we have offices in San Diego, Chicago, Houston. Local presence, however in our opinion is not required, especially if you are nationwide firm and need adequate coordinated support by dedicated team of consultants. Please read next paragraph about remote support 4. Nationwide Remote Support. This consulting method in our opinion is the best one. Please think for the moment how Microsoft or Dell serves you you probably do not see their technicians onsite often, and typically just call to their technical support numbers to get support case opened and then work over the telephone or web conference. In the case of Great Plains Dynamics, if ERP is already implemented and users are trained, day-to-day support is very efficient via phone conferences with web sessions, and this method saves you consultant travel time Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains Customization: ReportWriter Posted: Thu Jul 17, 2008 9:11 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Customization: ReportWriter modified and custom reports overview In Microsoft Dynamics GP Report Writer is integrated reports modification tool, where you can modify such reports as Blank SOP Invoice form or Purchase Order to place your company logo there. More advanced and sophisticated customizing scenarios are when you are altering chosen report by opening it with Great Plains Dexterity project and adding custom functions. In this case you can place on SOP Blank Invoice form something, which doesnt belong to Sales Order Processing module vendor invoice number (which is popular in the case if you are in transportation and you use agent settlement report, where your shippers are customers and vendors at the same time). Lets review Report Writer modification options: 1. Modified Reports. These reports you can do on your own as the user. Tools->Customization->Report Writer. Then pick the report to modify and you can change fields location, add, or take off fields. Please be aware that you can add fields from the tables associated with the report. In the case if the table is not associated, you can add the association, typically if the table belongs to the same module. 2. Logo placing guidelines. GP is Microsoft Dexterity application, which is the shell, written in C programming language, this places some restrictions on modern graphical printer drivers, when you are adding pictures (such as logos) to your RW reports. Please research your printer requirements and compatibilities in Microsoft Dynamics GP Customer Source, or contact your GP VAR 3. Dexterity Customized Reports. We recommend you to contact your GP ISV partner to see if they have Dex developer in staff with experience to customize existing report. As the highlight there are two options fist is when in Dexterity you create the function with prefix rw_. This function then will be available in the alternate modified report. To create alternate modified report, you simply port it from Dynamics.Dic to your Dex customization dictionary. The second option is to create report in Dex from scratch in this case you are the master of the situation and free in your modification choices. Subject: Great Plains Consultants and Developers nationwide support Posted: Wed Jul 16, 2008 7:56 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Consultants and Developers provide nationwide support Alba Spectrum If you have Microsoft Dynamics GP installed and implemented in your organization, and you are looking to get second opinion on your current system setup, customization, integration projects, if you have concerns about GP database integrity and performance, if you need one time or ongoing data conversion, or user training onsite or via web session, please consider to call alba Spectrum. Here is what we do: 1. Instant Remote Support via web session. Even if you are located ten miles away, it is still faster and in many cases very efficient to simply launch web session and look at your screen and problem. GP users have pretty similar problems from time to time: crashed batch, which needs to be either rolled back or deleted would be one of them 2. Local Service in San Diego, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Orange County and Los Angeles. This doesnt mean that if you do not see your city or area above, we cant help. In fact our customers are statistically located in all US business metros and what is more important, we believe that USA country side businesses should get adequate support and we are trying to help them with initial visits onsite and then following remote support 3. Customization Projects. If you need GP modification, you should first check with GP ISV or customization partner, as the price for the failure in technology selection is high. We have our own GP software development factory and we do all the spectrum of customization projects: Dexterity, eConnect, SQL Stored Procedures, Integration Manager, FRx, Crystal Reports, EDI and others. Plus we have expertise in various industries Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains Consultant: Functional and Technical SupportIf Posted: Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:41 pm (GMT 0) If you are looking for Microsoft Great Plains consultant, or programmer, please review this publication to get oriented. Microsoft Dynamics GP consulting has two certification paths: Functional Consulting: GP modules business logic, user training, functionality setup; technical: GP integration, modification, programming, reports design. Some consultants carry both certifications and experience, but typically you see segregation of duties. Our company is known by providing technically challenging expertise in Microsoft Dynamics GP consulting and support. Let us review different consulting options: 1. Local Support or going onsite for implementation. If you need new implementation, then you likely need local or visiting consultant to do the job. We provide local service in Chicago, San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Houston. If you have locations nationwide, we are happy to make occasional travel to do local support and implementation 2. Remote Support. This service is feasible if you have GP already implemented and need ongoing support. Modern technology, such as web sessions, remote desktop connection often with VPN technologies make onsite visits for small occasional fixes unnecessary. Through the web session we see your own screen and are at the same time on the phone or skype with you 3. GP Programming. Here you are typically limited in finding local expertise, especially if you need something, which requires several years of GP Dexterity programming and industry knowledge. Such projects are usually outsourced to so-called software development factories. However project management for GP customization projects might be local and at this time it is very desirable to seek local modification project management Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains Consultant, VAR and Customization Partner Alba Posted: Mon Jul 14, 2008 8:25 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Consultant, VAR and Customization Partner Alba Spectrum You can get Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains licenses through GP certified Partner channel. Each GP reseller carries certified technical and functional consultants to be in the program. If you are looking for new ERP implementation and think that Great Plains Dynamics is a good fit, or would like to see the product demo, executive presentation, you should locate either local GP VAR or nation-wide Reseller who specializes in your industry. We would like to orient you in GP and our company consulting practice: 1. Great Plains Dynamics GP is matured ERP application, which should be a good fit for the majority of American, Canadian mid-size and small-to-mid-size businesses . GP has modules, supported directly by Microsoft Business Solutions and also add-ons, or modules, supported by GP ISV partners. 2. Modules Selection. You typically begin with standard accounting core: GL, AR, AP, Payroll, then you select Supply Chain and Logistics modules: Sales Order Processing, Inventory Control, Purchase Order Processing, then you select if required elements of MRP or Manufacturing modules (standard modules should fit to discrete manufacturing line). And now, you are doing your homework, selecting industry specific modules or add-ons, and if your business is too unique (and at the same time not too complicated) you may consider programming your own custom add-on 3. Implementation and Support. GP Partner typically assigns to your implementation project GP certified consultant, who will be your project manager, and this consultant deploys technical consultants and if required GP programmers to setup your system: initial data conversion, GP installation, reports design, user training Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains Customization: Dexterity code upgrade overview Posted: Sun Jul 13, 2008 6:57 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Customization: Dexterity code upgrade overview for Consultant Microsoft Dynamics GP add-ons are often written in Great Plains Dexterity with new and sometimes alternative GP forms and windows where the buttons, have scripts and forms themselves have procedures and functions. These programming parts are written in Dex Sanscript programming language. Sanscript is sort of proprietary scripting language, typically you can get Dex programmer from GP ISV and customization partners, you should check with your Great Plains VAR for details. When newer Dynamics GP version is released, if you plan to update to it, you have to take into consideration Dex modification upgrade requirement. In this small publication w would like to orient you what you could expect from technical side: 1. Alternative GP Forms. These objects typically require special attention, and let us explain why. Imagine, you have customized GP Sales Order Processing Entry form for GP say version 8.0. Now, you plan to upgrade your customization to version 10.0. In version 10.0 GP has (potentially) redesigned some functionality, added and took off several fields and buttons. Your modification for 8.0 might of be dealing with the functionality, changed or even not present with version 10.0. This is why Alternative GP forms are the ones, where Dexterity programmers spends large portion of upgrading code revision 2. New GP Forms. This is when in your Dex add-on you create the form from scratch. New forms are typically less sensitive to the version and in majority of the cases should work fine, if you simply reapply Dex chunk with your add-on to the new version GP workstation 3. Calling GP Stored Procedures from Dexterity code. If you have your own custom stored procedure, which you call from Dex code, you need to review its SQL script typically check if new version of GP has any changes in the tables, addressed in the SP. If you call GP original stored procedure, then, you should review GP SDK to see if new version has the same set of parameters 4. Performance improvement considerations. If you are upgrading from really old version, especially when you move from old DB platform, such as Ctree or Pervasive SQL to MS SQL Server, then you can consider offloading some of the Dex logic, usually found in Dex cursors to custom SQL Stored Procedures, where you can benefit on the aggregation performance: Select or Insert in SQL would work a way faster than Dexterity cursor 5. Exotic Sanscript programming examples. In late 1990th we saw such techniques in Dex software development as inserting scripts into VBA code. This technique allowed you in one custom add-on to address several GP dictionaries popular example is GP Vendor Invoice and Intellisol Advanced Purchase Order Processing. If you have something like that we advise you to redesign it, as it is virtually impossible to debug such code samples Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Great Plains VAR and Reseller: software licenses overview Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2008 8:02 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains VAR and Reseller: software licenses overview Alba Spectrum Microsoft Dynamics GP is supported by Microsoft Business Solutions through partners or resellers channel and you should expect the changes in user licensing, purchasing options, software and implementation financing. At this time, Summer of 2008, on the mid-market ERP we see the tendency to price user on so-called all-in-one model, where you pay for the user and you get the bundle of modules included. For additional or current info we suggest you to contact us or your active GP partner or VAR of records: 1. Business Ready pricing model. This is current at the time of writing pricing model and if you are looking for new GP purchase, you should decide on either Business Essentials or Advanced Management 2. Business Essentials. If you are small company and looking for small number of users and basic functionality for your new ERP Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics GP, then likely you should review this level. You will get such basic GP modules as GL, SOP, POP, Multicurrency to give you an idea. However you will not get access to such functionality as Manufacturing, Field Service again to give you general picture 3. Advanced Management. This licensing model fits to larger organizations, where you will get such advanced modules as mentioned above in #2, including not available for BE, plus Project Accounting, Lockbox Processing, National Accounts, and others. Advanced Management will give you more flexibility in the future to have your future GP ERP server your organization, without exposing you to unexpected licensing model downsizing possibilities Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Business Mistakes to Avoid Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2008 3:35 pm (GMT 0) Small businesses and entrepreneurs often repeat the same mistakes. If you are an entrepreneur, the following is a list of critical mistakes to avoid in your new venture: 1. Promising The World Entrepreneurs will commonly make bold promises that are often impossible to actually deliver. It is important that you stay grounded in reality, and only agree to things that you know you can actually deliver. 2. Lack Of Discipline Owning a business takes commitment and self-discipline. Since you are "the boss" you probably won't be disciplined for things like not showing up for work on time... but such things will have a negative impact on your business. It is important that entrepreneurs treat their business just like a real business, and not like a personal hobby. Act professional, charge for your services, and be accountable for the product or service provided. Self-discipline is critical to being self-employed. 3. Lack Of Focus Remain focused on your core business philosophy, and don't attempt to be everything to everyone. Decide what your strengths and business focus are, and use that strength and focus to build the foundation for your core business. 4. Doing It All While most small business owners are jacks-of-all-trades, it is important to know your limits. Do not try to do it all. In many situations, it is much better to hire someone or outsource a project than attempt to reinvent the wheel or do something yourself that you are simply not qualified to do. 5. Undervaluing Product Or Service Small businesses often make the mistake of undervaluing their product or service. If an item or service is priced too inexpensively, it may be viewed to be of inferior quality. Conduct a cost analysis, and consider split-testing to find the appropriate price point for your product or service. 6. Hiring Family It is natural for a small business owner to want to hire family members, but this is often a very costly mistake. If you do hire family members, be sure to make it clear from the beginning that business is business. Employment should not effect your personal relationships -- that is very easy to say, but unfortunately it often does effect your personal and family relationships. Additionally, other employees may resent favoritism paid to a family member who is given priority. And sadly, favoritism of a family member can often be perceived by other employees, even when it doesn't actually exist. Think long and hard before venturing down this path. 7. Copying The Competition Copying the competition is certainly far easier to do than creating something new. However, that does not mean that it is a good thing to do. 8. Tracking Advertising It is important to track and measure the success or failure of any advertising campaigns. If you do not track your advertising, you will not really know what works and what does not, and you could be throwing good money after bad. 9. Not Having A Plan It is important that you have goals, and a plan for your business. Use the plan to guide the direction of your business. 10. Failure To Invest You have to spend money in order to make money. Many entrepreneurs fail to invest in their business, yet expect instant success. Building a business takes time, effort, and both a personal and a financial investment. 11. Inability To Adapt Many small businesses change over the years. You must be willing to adapt to the changing needs of a business, and to the changing needs of your customers, in order to survive in the the business world. Launching a business is an exciting and rewarding experience. Just be careful to avoid the above pitfalls on your way to success. Subject: Great Plains Implementation Partner with Focus in Technology Posted: Fri Jul 11, 2008 8:14 pm (GMT 0) Great Plains Implementation Partner with Focus in Technology: Dexterity, eCommerce Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP implementing often requires integrated approach, when you have your new accounting and MRP application to continue work with legacy parts of your IT infrastructure. Imagine the scenario, when you have say Lotus Notes Sales Order Processing custom database, where you are happy with Workflow and would like to send approved orders to Dynamics GP Great Plains SOP module for order execution in your warehouse and shipping departments. Another example is e-commerce web site integration with newly implemented GP back office. Alba Spectrum carries broad technology expertise and industry knowledge. We would like to give you some GP modification and integration highlights: 1. Microsoft Dexterity. This tool gives you unlimited control over all the objects and parts in Dynamics GP, however it also exposes you to the highest risk of altering internal business logic and data integrity, meaning that you dont want to stop your ERP in order to fix the damage, caused by programmer, who was in learning curve in using GP Dexterity programming. With Dex we recommend you to appeal to professional GP programmers and ISV partners. The most often Great Plains Dexterity customizations are changing GP screens and extending existing logic of GP core modules 2. eCommerce integrations. Here you often see the situation, when you have existing working and pretty robust website with shopping cart, catalogues, pricing schemas. Then you may consider two phases of ecommerce integrating: first phase would be just sending Invoices to GP; and the second phase would be controlling catalogues and pricing from GP, meaning two-ways integration. There are multiple GP add-ons on the market, dedicated to eCommerce, however often we see the path of lightweight custom GP SDK eConnect programming 3. eCommerce auto posting. We also see the demand to post transactions from ecommerce application in GP automatically, by batch. We recommend you to deploy Alba Spectrum Posting Server to do the job Andrew Karasev, Alba Spectrum http://www.albaspectrum.com help@albaspectrum.com 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, serving Great Plains USA and Canada nationwide. Subject: Microsoft Small Business Financials Support: Reporting Posted: Thu Jul 10, 2008 7:44 pm (GMT 0) Microsoft Small Business Financials Support: Reporting - Alba Spectrum Former Great Plains Small Business Manager, recent version s 9.0, Small Business Financials is in essence GP Dexterity application with similar code base as regular Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics GP, but with scaled down functionality. SBF is available exclusively on Microsoft SQL Server platform and this fact opens great opportunities for SQL programmers and consultants to fix SBF data and program integrations. In this small publication we would like to give your reports design highlights 1. Report Writer Reporting. Small Business Financials allows you only to change the position of the fields, if you need to really change report design place new fields, add calculated fields, then you need to do it in GP ReportWriter module, and then transfer it back to SBF in the form of Export (or package). This is pretty much a standard practice in supporting and upgrading Small Business Financial customers they need to be backed by Great Plains Dynamics GP customization partner 2. Advanced Financial Analysis reporting. Yes, SBF has AFA as default and preferred reports for Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash Flow Statement. AFA is another Dex module which builds its reports on GP account categories 3. Crystal Reports for SBF. Here you have the opportunity and the challenge as CR is just a tool and it doesnt give your GP report wizard. We recommend you to familiarize yourself, if you are software developer or programmer with SBF tables structure, this is very similar to GP. If you have MSDN subscription, please download Dynamics GP 9.0 demo CD and install it for testing with demo company 4. SRS or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
