Having a landline telephone means having the kind of traditional, wired telephone service found in residential homes and businesses. Having a landline is important for several reasons.
1. Reliability – Even during a natural disaster such as a hurricane, your landline will still be operational. This may not be the case with wireless phone service.
2. Cost – With a landline, all of your local calls are unlimited usage for every call. It doesn’t change with the time of day and you never have to keep track of minutes.
3. Dependable Quality – Landline phone service offers the highest quality voice transmissions.
4. Privacy – Most cell phone users don’t think about this, but there are always eavesdroppers to worry about who are out there using devices such as scanners or even other cell phones to listen to your calls. You don’t have to worry about this with a landline, as these devices are useless to intercept landline calls.
5. Broadband Internet Services – Homes with a landline can now enjoy High-Speed Broadband Internet which requires a landline.
6. Voice Mail – Even though you do have this with a wireless phone, it is still an added benefit of having the landline. Most companies give you access to your voice mail system whether you are at home or away.
7. Directory Listings – If you only have a wireless phone, you can forget about being in the White Pages! You need a landline phone to have your number listed in the telephone directory.
8. Enhanced Calling Features – Landline providers are increasingly adding enhanced calling features such as call transfer and call forwarding.
9. No Contract – You will not need to sign a contract or have a credit check as you do with most wireless cell phone carriers.
10. Data/Voice Capabilities – A landline connection in your home is also a necessity if you have a home-based or small business because there are many capabilities available that combine data with voice that make communicating with your customers or contacts hassle-free.

As if that isn’t enough, you can also get free long distance for your landline through PhoneHog. You can sign up here: http://www.PhoneHog.com/default.asp?offer=blog. Try it yourself and see!
The O'Reilly Network posted an interesting article some time ago about the switch to internet phone service and listed the Top 10 Questions Asked When Switching To An Internet Phone. The service is still a mystery to most Americans and though information is readily available online, the answers to these questions are not common knowledge. These are questions you may ask or want to ask when you are contacting internet phone service providers for information. Especially important are questions relating to 911 service so that you understand what the implications of a switch would be in an emergency situation.

1. Can I Keep the Same Phone Number?

2. Do I Need a Broadband Connection?

3. How Does It Sound?

4. Will I Really Save Money?

5. What if the Power Goes Out?

6. What About 911?

7. Why Do I Need Free Long Distance if I Get Free Long Distance from My Cell Phone?

8. Do I Need a Computer?

9. Do I Have to Talk Through My Computer?

10. How Does Internet Telephony Perform?

Though there is usually a flat rate for internet phone service plans and free long distance, you may not be ready to make the switch - especially if it involves the purchase of new equipment. In the meantime, if free long distance is important to you, sign up with PhoneHog.

Recently Yahoo! has been pushing their new Yahoo! Voice calling plan (a program compatible with Yahoo! Messenger) in which you can make PC to Phone (landline and mobile) and PC to PC calls. They have posted long distance rates online, which would almost make anyone give up their landline - if just basing your decision on price.

But all over the internet, users are posting issues and problems ranging from horrible connections on calling 800 numbers to software downloading problems and more. It seems that the consensus is that the service is unreliable. And paying by the minute can definitely add up!

What if you were trying to call 911 and you got stuck with a bad connection? Could this mean the difference between life and death for someone? Maybe!

I'd say until that kind of internet phone calling system is improved or perfected, you should just stick with your landline for now. If long distance rates are a problem from your service carrier, you can sign up with PhoneHog and earn free long distance minutes. It's easy and free - and you don't have to switch phone service providers, so there is no hassle.
For those of you who are purchasing pre-paid phone cards, there are some important questions you should find out the answers to. This is to ensure you are getting your money's worth:

1. Can I reach a customer service representative 24 hours a day?

2. What fees or taxes will I be charged per call?

3. Is there a connection fee or disconnection fee?

4. Does the phone card have an expiration date?

5. What is the minute rounding process?

6. Do the rates change based on the time of day?

7. What rate will I be charged per minute for the destination I am calling?

8. Is there a guarantee that if the phone card doesn't operate properly that I will get my money back?

9. Is the company trustworthy?

10. Will I be charged for calls if the person I am calling doesn't answer?

When purchasing a phone card, there are so many things that you have to worry about! If you make a one minute phone call, many pre-paid phone cards will use minute rounding and turn that into a 5 minute phone call! Most people do not even know this. The minutes can expire if you don't use them in time, and you could be charged outrageous taxes and fees if you are not careful.

With PhoneHog, it's different, though. The minutes that you earn are free, as are all of the phone calls, and there is never a fee associated with using it. If you sign up, the program is very easy to use. Imagine making free long distance phone calls anytime you want! You never have to wait until after 7pm or 9pm where your phone company has better rates. Try signing up - you have nothing to lose except a few minutes on the phone making free phone calls!
So many people have given up their landlines and have opted to just use their cell phones as their primary means of telephone communication. Although it makes sense in a way, especially due to how heavily people rely on cell phones, you shouldn't give up your landline just yet. At least one good reason is that in a natural disaster, your cell phone is most certainly not going to work. Your landline may be your only means of communication to the outside world in a situation like a hurricane.

An article I read recently said that by 2009, between 23 and 37 percent of wireless cell phone users will use their cell phone as their only telephone. Other users will choose voice over internet, or VoIP, for broadband and phone service because they like to have choices and they are all competing for the lowest prices and plans.

As far as surveys go, however, the traditional landline is said to still the most reliable phone service available. Just contact your phone company to make sure you are getting the best deal and use PhoneHog for free long distance and you won't have to give up your landline or switch your current phone number.
Have you ever opened your phone bill and suddenly you discover it is from a completely different phone company than you signed up with? If so, then you have probably been slammed. Phone slamming is when your phone company switches your service to another provider without your permission. The practice is completely illegal!

If you think this may have happened to you already, go ahead and contact the telephone company that you did sign up with. Tell them very clearly that you want to reconnect your original long distance calling plan that you signed up for. The company is not allowed to charge you for this switch, and hopefully you haven’t already paid your bill because by law, you don’t have to pay the charges for the time you were switched to the other company without your permission.

However, if you did happen to pay the bill, the law says that the company that “slammed” you has to pay you back 150% of your payment. If they refuse, be sure to get in touch with the FCC to make a formal complaint.

Another way to avoid this altogether is to drop your long distance company. You can have a home phone line and with PhoneHog, you can earn free long distance minutes. It’s very easy to sign up and earn the minutes. It’s as easy as using a pre-paid phone card, but without the cost. Try it for yourself to see, and post a comment to tell us what you think!
Well, it looks like AT&T is finally apologizing for last Monday's DSL outage for customers in the Southeast. That night, there were several customer service problems as people called in and only received a busy signal when trying to get through to the company to find out what was going on. AT&T spokesperson Dawn Benton released a statement late last Wednesday afternoon: "We apologize that some customers received busy signals when they attempted to call for support. Again, this was due to the unusually high call volume."

To me that "apology" was rather lame in comparison to what the loss of an internet connection can do to a business or a student taking classes online. It seems that many people are hesitant to cancel because their email address is linked to their AT&T account, but I'm going to go set up a Hotmail or a Yahoo email address for free and start looking for other service providers in my area. I was personally affected and was so upset by the lack of concern from AT&T over what had happened.

How many of you were affected by this outage? Did you try to call AT&T only to get a busy signal? If so, you can vent here! Tell us all about it.
At this time of year, I hear many of my friends and family complaining about how much money they are spending on decorations and gifts for the holiday season. Are you in the same boat? Is your holiday spending getting a little bit out of control? I read that the average American family spends between $1,000.00 - $4,000.00 during Christmas. That just seems like too much to me!

This year I wanted to find out how to save money during the holidays so that my own family doesn't go into debt over buying presents and putting up a tree. The number one thing that I am doing differently this year is shopping early, so that I am not paying for overnight shipping! Last year, I procrastinated to the point where every gift I purchased for family out of state had to be shipped overnight. It cost us a fortune!

This year, I am making a lot of homemade gifts. From cookies to dolls, I have found a long list of great ideas online to make gifts for many of the people on my list. Don't forget that people love food! You wouldn't believe the reaction I've gotten to a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies! I have set aside time to actually complete these tasks and I hope that people appreciate the effort.

Are any of you sending out homemade gifts this year, too? What ideas have you come up with to save money this holiday season? Post a comment to let us know!

And don't forget that PhoneHog is another way you can save lots of money during the holidays while you keep in touch with family and friends. Sign up today!
While looking through news articles in the Telecom industry, I've seen a handful of issues that were related to employee theft with regard to long distance phone calls. Companies are actually firing employees for making phone calls on the company phones that the company ends up footing the bill for. These companies are figuring out ways to track their employee's phone calls by using long distance access codes or with products such as Telemate.

Instead of getting fired or reprimanded at work for making long distance phone calls from your desk, try using PhoneHog. You can earn free long distance minutes that are able to be used from any phone, much like a phone card. It's easy to sign up and it can save you your job!

Be honest, how many of you are making long distance phone calls from work? Post a comment to let us know - or if you work with someone who does this and it gets on your nerves - tell us about it!
Any news about Google these days is interesting. I read an article stating that Google may bid in a mobile airwaves auction for 700-MHz band airwaves, which can go long distances and penetrate thick walls. Last week, Google executives met with the FCC Chairman and other officials to discuss the auction and they have started making the necessary preparations to bid. Google has not announced a final decision in the matter, however.

Right now, Google is all about openness in networks. Just this month, Google unveiled the GPhone and their plans to offer software for building internet cell phones and they are creating alliances with device and software makers to foster growth in that industry. It is a very competitive market that Google is about to enter, and it could potentially hurt the big players such as AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and Nextel. But in reality, it could set Google back because it would cost billions of dollars to create another national wireless network, but I guess we'll see what happens. This could all just be a tactic to make sure the FCC's $4.6 billion minimum bid is met and that the open-access provision that Google fought for will stay intact.

I guess we'll just have to wait to see what happens. It should prove interesting, though, if Google makes this move because it could change the entire industry.
With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve right around the corner, you should be thinking about keeping in touch with family during these holidays. Many of us neglect our families all year because, of course, we are all very busy.

When is the last time you called your parents just to chat and tell them you love them? Do you even know what your siblings or cousins are up to lately? It is easy to get caught up in our day-to-day lives and forget what is important. That is why I love the holidays. It is a chance for everyone to get together, catch up on what is going on, and to just spend quality time being with each other. The great meals and presents are just a bonus! The end of the year flies by so fast. Don't let these next couple of months pass you by without showing your family and friends how much you really care. Pick up the phone and call them! And when you are writing out your Christmas cards this year - try to be sincere. The task can seem daunting to write so many personal notes, but the people you send them to will notice that you took the time to write something special that lets them know you really do care.

Don't forget that you can sign up with PhoneHog to earn free long distance minutes. If your friends and family don't live close-by, let PhoneHog pay for your phone calls. It only takes a minute to sign up and you can start earning free calls right away. Happy Holidays!

With all of the buzz about social networks like MySpace and Facebook, it's no wonder VoIP is introducing its applications to these websites. If you think about how many conversations are initated electronically vs. over the phone, by people using email and instant messaging, it is no wonder that many people think these social networks will replace those forms of communication altogether.

VoIP has plans to embed the voice features as an upgrade, starting with a Facebook voicemail application. And even though I'm not a huge fan of Vonage and other such Voice Over IP products because of the security issues discussed earlier in this blog, this is something for the social networking websites that has a lot of potential.

What do you think about this as an upgrade feature for Facebook? Is it a feature that you would use? You obviously can't do this with traditional telephone service. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I still trust my landline the most. I get local telephone service for about $25 a month, and I get free long distance with PhoneHog.

I have yet to sign up with Facebook, but if my friends keep making fun of me, I might have to give it a try.
An article about the lastest security news that I read last week regarding Vonage is pretty scary. With so many people switching telephone service providers to get the lower prices that Vonage offers, it's really a shame that along with new internet technology comes new ways of hacking into people's lives and businesses.

The article says that Vonage customers phone lines are being hacked, and that the hackers can divert and intercept the telephone calls by exploiting a weakness in the system.

If you were considering going with Vonage, I'd definitely give it a little more thought. If their internet phone systems do not have the proper security measures, the company can in no way protect or ensure your privacy. Going with Vonage as your provider may save you a bit of money, but at what cost?

Has this happened to you? If you are a Vonage customer and your phone lines have been hacked, please post a comment to let us know about it! How did you deal with it? What did Vonage do to fix it?

And remember, there are other ways to save money on your phone bill. With PhoneHog, you can earn free long distance minutes that can save you a fortune. It's easy and free to sign up.

The New York Times recently reported that Microsoft has launched two new programs that enable people to place calls directly from the Microsoft Outlook e-mail program. Obviously, they are working hard to intermingle calling, conferencing, e-mail, and instant messaging. This type of software recently merged some corporate telephone networks with networks connecting office PC's to the Internet.

Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Communicator 2007 have added voice calling and video conferencing to its features. Microsoft continues to change the way people communicate. The programs can identify to co-workers how to contact each other based on their "presence" status, whether it is via phone, Instant Message, or E-mail.

This is just another great example of how technology is improving our world. Already I can listen to my voicemails from Outlook. It's delivered as an email message with an mp3 attachment. I have always hated listening to voicemail, but for some reason, it's not so bad when I listen via Outlook. I don't even have to pick up the phone. I'm sure we'll start to see this technology in many more of our offices very soon.

If your office has either of these programs, feel free to comment to let us know how you like it. Do you see an improvement in office productivity and communication?

How is it that family relationships can break down so badly that they can seem irrepairable? Many things can happen such as serious differences of opinion about religion or values, parents getting divorced, and even a family member marrying a person that no one approves of. Have you ever been in a situation like this?
Family matters can often consume a person's life to the point where they are unable to focus, sleep, or concentrate at work. The situation can seem impossible to deal with, let alone to fix. At times like these, heartfelt family communication can be the first step to breaking down the barriers that are keeping them apart.
If this scenario sounds familiar to you, why not suggest family counseling? This can be a way for everyone to sit together to talk about how they feel and get an unbiased opinion from a trained professional about how to begin to repair the damaged that has been done. If family therapy is not an option, how about letting down your guard, picking up the phone, and saying you are sorry and that you want to talk about what's happening? Sometimes it doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong, because as they say, 'blood is thicker than water'. Having your family around is very important, so you should definitely try to work through your differences.
If you are in a situation like this or you ever have been, feel free to comment to let us know how you handled it. Were you able to mend your family relationships? If so, how did you do it?

Many people put a lot of thought into embarking upon a relationship that would be divided by miles. This is all for good reason! It is seldom that we hear about long distance relationships working out. I have a little bit of relationship advice for those of you who are considering it, or even for those of you who are already in the midst of this kind of love.

Love compatibility and relationship communication are two very important factors that can determine whether or not your long distance relationship will last. It isn't for people who are insecure, because putting that much distance between a couple means there has to be absolute trust. If there is no trust, there is no love. Dating is already hard enough!

Love compatibility is really about having the same morals, values, and expectations in a relationship. For example, if one person in the relationship feels that they should see their partner every single day, but the other person doesn't feel that way - the first person in that relationship is going to be disappointed and maybe hurt. Being relationship compatible will give a long distance love a higher chance of working out.

Relationship communication is vital - especially for long distance relationships! Telling your partner how you feel and being open and honest goes a long way in creating a comfort zone that can span the distance between a couple who are miles apart. Regular phone conversations, just to hear each other's voice, can help with the lonliness that may be encountered. Even though phone bills can be higher than usual, you have to keep the lines open should one partner need to talk. There are pleny of long distance relationships that have ended up in marriage, so hang in there!

Feel free to comment if you have an opinion on this situation. Do you think long distance relationships can last - yes or no? Let us know what you think!

Some time ago, PC-to-PC calling was introduced to the world, enabling computer users to have very inexpensive or free long distance phone calls via their computers with the new technology. I think this is fine for some people, but personally, I have privacy concerns with this form of communication because of how easily the internet can be hacked.

I read an article today about a company seeking to monitor these internet calls, to eavesdrop, so that the conversations can be used to drop in advertisements based on what people are talking about. Some people might be okay with this for the sake of getting free phone calls, but the idea of anyone listening in to my personal phone calls does not sit comfortably with me.

If you still want free long distance phone calls, but don't want to take the chance of having your privacy invaded, you should sign up at http://www.phonehog.com/. You earn free long distance minutes, and you get to keep your conversations private - just like they should be.
I have a confession. I can't stand getting phone calls from telemarketers. I hate it! So, last night, I get this call from my local telephone company, and it's a telemarketer trying to sell me a long distance plan.

First of all, I was in the middle of dinner. Of course I was! I only answered the phone because it was sitting right next to me and I wanted it to stop ringing.

This very nice boy starts to tell me about this great long distance plan I can get for $32.99 per month, with unlimited calling to anyone in the U.S. I really tried to be nice and listen, but like I said, I hate getting these phone calls! I was about two seconds from hanging up on him.

But instead I let him finish and after he asked me to sign up, I said, "Let me ask you this. Would you rather pay $32.99 a month for long distance calls or would you rather get them for free?"

He was stumped. He replied, "How do you think you are going get long distance calls for free?"

I told him to go sign up at http://www.phonehog.com/.

It is an unfortunate truth that there are times that families face that force them to be far apart for long or even indefinite periods of time. Reasons for families to be split over long distances for long periods of time can include military service obligations, natural disasters, and even employment opportunities. Married couples that are separated over long distances are more likely to experience troubling consequences such as disagreements, fights, and even divorce. Children that are separated from one or both of their parents are more at risk of becoming troubled adolescents without proper guidance.

Military psychologists have dealt with the problems of families that feel the strain of a loved one that is deployed for long periods of time due to their service obligations. It is not uncommon for the spouse that is left to bear the entire weight of raising the children, paying the bills, and keeping up with the household to begin to unconsciously resent the spouse the active duty. Additionally, children can lash out at authority figures, including their military serviceperson parent as a defense mechanism to feeling isolated, abandoned, and betrayed at their prolonged absence. Counseling sessions seem to help, whereas they allow family members to open lines of communication that reveal feelings that may not otherwise be shared in the day-to-day occurrences of the home. It also generally helps that when the deployed parent returns, they do not jump directly back into the role of disciplinarian, but instead simply allow the children to acclimate themselves to their presence once again for a while.

Natural disasters, such as the hurricane Katrina, have been the cause of family separation many times. Many Katrina victims found themselves being housed in shelters far from the locations of their destroyed homes, with no way of locating missing relatives. Some family members that were offered foster homes by well-meaning volunteers had no way of locating other family members for several weeks after the hurricane. This was yet another unfortunate side effect of the devastation that the storm left on Louisiana and Mississippi but due to the concentrated efforts of the Red Cross and other volunteer organizations, most family members were reunited in as much of a timely fashion as possible.

Finally, the prospect of earning a better living to support their family has resulted in many Americans to commute long distances, travel for long periods of time, or even move to an entirely different city or state. Long commutes take away from valuable time that could be spent bonding with the family, as do long and frequent business trips. Unfortunately, it is generally the consensus that family time takes a back seat to financial obligations and the promise of more income. It is important in these situations that the parents allot certain days that they are home to spend time with their spouses and children as much as possible to retain the bonds that can be stretched thin as a result of their absences. Many businesspersons have learned the hard way that they cannot get back the precious moments that they have lost chasing the American dreams at their jobs and so the quote was born, “Like your job, but love your family.”
