The Nokia Supernova Series - 7610, 7510, 7310, 7210

nokia_supernova_series.jpgA week after Sony Ericsson unleashed its several new mobile handsets, close rival Nokia followed suit with four not as powerful but definitely more beautiful and aesthetically customizable mobile handsets- the Nokia 7610, 7512, 7310, 7210. All four mobile handsets belong to the new Nokia Supernova series, and are fully customizable to match with a user’s mood and fashion. Yes folks, Nokia is bringing back the old days of dressing up your mobile phones with Xpress-on Covers which are aesthetically funky and colourful. All four Supernova mobile phones were designed to give you various options and each of them will suit every type of mobile phone users. Unlike the recently released Nokia E66 and E71, the Supernova series were designed and geared for mobile phone users who just want some basic mobile phone features which they can also use for picture taking and entertainment purposes. Can these mobile phones deliver the goodies? We certainly hope so. Here’s a brief rundown of each one of them. All four mobile phones are slated for release anytime this year.

The Nokia 7610 Supernova, which is obviously the most powerful and feature-rich among these Supernova mobile handsets. The 7610 is a slider phone with pleasing design and smooth curves. It comes with several choices of Xpress-On covers including a choice between steel blue and red design with muted gray front surface or bright lilac and steel blue contrasted against a pristine white front surface. The Nokia 7510 Supernova is a fold-up mobile phone with push-to-open side key. Like the 7610 it comes with various Xpress-On cover designs. The storm blue, red emerald green and espresso brown. But in addition to these Xpress-On covers, the Nokia 7510 features magical light effects with hidden-until-lit display and a reminder light. The 7510 was designed with mechanical quality, soft feel and solid metal hinge. It also features a 2 megapixel camera with NIPS, LED Flash, 4x digital zoom, a 512 MB microSD card, a 2.2-inch QVGA display and a user-friendly Nokia web browser for easy access to Nokia Search, Share on OVI and Flickr. Other features of the Nokia 7510 includes an FM radio, MP3 player that supports various digital music formats, access to Nokia Music Store and Nokia Music PC Client, link to YouTube, access to Nokia Maps 1.2, A-GPS with turn-by-turn directions, and Nokia Wild Sets service. The Nokia 7510 Supernova will be available in the fourth quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of 180 EUR before taxes and subsidies.

The Nokia 7310’s got Xpress-On covers which are etched with daring 3D textured designs which are available in steel blue with a second front and back cover in wasabi green or candy pink. It boasts of features such as 2 megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom and TV out for image sharing, instant messaging and playing the preinstalled games on TV. Motorola Blaze Adds Another Touch Screen Handset to the Pile [Motorola]

The Boy Genius Report has a first look at Motorola's answer to the 'Touch Screen Wars,' called the Blaze. From the looks of the branding, this touchy-feely handset is coming to Verizon, complete with a special Verizon-only operating system. BGR says the touch screen is decent, and the mobile browser is 'OK,' but nothing to write home about. Email and texting functionality are also lambasted by BGR, as is the crush-the-screen-to-make-it-work haptic touchscreen feedback. Specs include a 2 megapixel camera, EV-DO Rev. A support, GPS, and Bluetooth. They didn't sound too keen on the Blaze, but they didn't write it off completely.

Motorola Z10 in pictures

Motorola Z10 picturesWe're still waiting for Motorola to get real with their Motorola Z10 slider in the US. So, in the meantime, Rafe from AllAboutSymbian has posted some live shots of the Motorola Z10 in action.

Like the Motorola Z8, the Z10 features that trick kick-slider. But, with a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, onboard video editing software, and higher-quality materials, the Motorola Z10 has more to be desired. Of course, there aren't any indications that Motorola is planning to bring this desirable slider to its largest market in the US, but here's to hoping.

Motorola Z10 pictures

I just want to end by saying that Motorola needs to get off their duffs and flood the market with as many reviews of this thing as possible. The UIQ3-powered Motorola Z10 has considerable promise, but nobody will know about it if Moto doesn't blitz the media-space. Especially if Motorola hopes to get out of the major rut they seem to be so comfortable with.. In other words, where's my review unit, Moto?

Sciphone i68 is More iPhone than HiPhone

sciphone-i68-phone.jpg

The Cect HiPhone is the most popular iPhone clone brand right now but a pretender has just arrived that might be able to successfully challenge its dominance. For one thing, the SciPhone model i68 is pretty damn close hardware-wise to what the iPhone looks like. The photo you see above is no ordinary rendering; that is actually what the phone looks like. For a more realistic view, you can watch the video after the break.

Specs of the Sciphone (pronounced Sky Phone) include a quadband GSM connectivity, 3.2-inch touch screen with both finger and stylus input, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth (!!), Fm tuner and a G-Sensor for flick navigation. The demo video below shows only a changing of wallpapers when the Sciphone is flicked but it should also be able to change track by flicking.

Verizon's LG Dare touchscreen contender available tomorrow for $200

Verizon Wireless isn't kidding around with this new Dare phone from LG: it'll hit Verizon's online shop tomorrow (the 26th) for $200 with a $50 rebate, and then land in retail on July 3rd. We've had little time to get accustomed to its touchscreen mug, unlike Sprint's long run-up to the Instinct, but Verizon and LG have certainly done their homework. There's a whole lot to chew on here, so we're going to drop it on you bullet point style:

Hardware:
  • Dimensions: 103.9 x 55.6 x 13.8 mm (that's 0.54-inches thick for us yanks)
  • 3-inch, 240 x 400 touchscreen LCD with 'Vibe-Touch' tactile feedback
  • Rev A EV-DO
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus and exposure control
  • 120 fps slow-motion movie record mode
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • microSD up to 8GB
  • Proximity sensor for switching off the LCD when against your face
  • Light sensor to adjust LCD brightness automatically
  • Accelerometer
  • 3D graphics acceleration, supports app transitions and rotations

Software:
  • 'Full HTML' browser (barely) with page overview and zoom functions
  • V Cast store and VZ Navigator
  • Cover Flow-alike music app
  • 51 possible apps, 11 app 'drag & drop' shortcut menu
  • Shortcuts draggable to home screen
  • Graphical favorites menu, drag icons to pertinent task like message, call or edit
  • Contact list includes search ribbon and filtering
  • Text input via QWERTY, predictive keypad or handwriting recognition
  • Drawing pad includes colors, pen widths, eraser for scribbling and picture 'editing'
  • Background music listening
  • Video editing, picture editing, panoramic stitching

Phew, these guys really packed it in. Stand by for our hands-on impressions.

Motorola ROKR E8 unboxing and hands-on

Motorola handed out the ROKR E8 at the 2008 Motorola Holiday Gift Guide Preview.  If you follow SlashGear or Phone Magazine, you’re probably already know everything there is to know about the MOTOROKR E8.  However, for those living under a rock over the past months, well read on.

motorokr-e8-tmobile-1-3-1-phonemag

motorokr-e8-tmobile-10

Motorola has made it very easy for users to switch the ROKR E8 from talk to music with ONE touch.  The ROKR E8 features one of the best implementation of haptics feedback technology on the market.  And by haptics, I don’t mean pseudo feedback or where the entire screen vibrates when you press or select a particular area.  The slight vibration really tricks your brain into thinking that there’s a ‘real’ button there!

motorokr-e8-tmobile-1-2-1

Other key features of the ROKR E8 include Crystal Talk technology, 2-megapixel camera, 2GB of onboard memory, and FastScroll navigation wheel allows for scrolling through songs, contact and image gallery with the slide of a thumb.  As I alluded to this feature earlier, ROKR E8 include ModeShift Technology that transforms the handset from phone to music player imaging with a touch of a button.

ROKR E8 will be available on T-Mobile.  The price and availability was not disclosed at the time of me writing this article.  So stay tune for more details.  Make sure to check back in a couple of days for a full review.

AT&T Samsung A227

AT&T Samsung A227The AT&T Samsung A227 is almost here. The AT&T Samsung A227 will be one of the carriers lower-end models, so don’t expect anything fancy. It does have quad-band GSM, capable of global roaming though.

Some of the AT&T Samsung A227 features include: 65k STN main display, MMS messaging, WAP browser, Alarm clock, Speakerphone & a 500 name phonebook. So, like I said earlier, the AT&T Samsung A227 is a very basic handset. If all you need is a phone with very few extras, you may want to check into this one - otherwise, pay a little cash and buy something nice.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 hands-on, sorta

Sony Xperia X1

So here's the scene. We're at the Digital Experience show, trying to get our hands on a powered-up Sony Xperia X1. Sure, we found a unit that wasn't powered up, but that does you -- and us -- no good. Sony told us to come back in 15 minutes, so we grabbed some press kits, made a round of booths, and came back.

Sure enough, when we came back the X1 was powered up, but the nice booth lady tried to tell us that things weren't working just right and the unit was stuck on the config screen. After some jiggering, we determined the little X1 was just stuck on the touch screen calibration, and we were cruising through menus within minutes. It's pretty clear this unit wasn't ready for primetime -- you'll even see some HTC test apps in the below gallery -- but we were impressed by the screen's resolution and brightness. Windows Mobile 6.1 showed it face often in the UI, but the phone app and general utilities were looking good.

Overall, the X1 is a pleasure to behold -- it's one sexy device. That said, we'll have to wait how Sony Ericsson's user interface shapes up and just look at the pretty pictures in the gallery until mid-September.

You can find the gallery over here at Engadget Classic.

Samsung intros the snoozefest J800 Luxe and L700 cellphones

It looks like the folks at Samsung are keeping the fires burning with a batch of new handsets announced at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition. First on the block is the 3G, J800 Luxe slider, a mid-range phone with a 2.2-inch 176 x 200 display, two megapixel camera, FM tuner, A2DP support, and a slot for microSD cards. The electronics-maker is also offering the L700, a fairly unexciting candybar with a 2.1-inch screen, HSDPA, a choice of colors (pink, silver, and gold), and pretty much all the other features listed for the previous phone. The most interesting offering from this set is the Symbian-based L870 that we've seen previously, which the company claims is still on target for its August release. No word on pricing or release dates for the two new models, however.

Motorola announces MOTOZINE ZN5

Hints of Motorola's new MOTOZINE series of devices have gone back as far as last year, but today marks the first time that Moto's officially spilled any beans on the goods. The headlining feature on the first model, the ZN5 candybar, lies on the backside: a 5-megapixel sensor courtesy of a partnership with Kodak, featuring autofocus, a xenon flash, image stitching, and on-device integration with Kodak Gallery. Otherwise, you get WiFi (score), Motorola's so-called 'ModeShift' technology for morphing the keypad depending on device mode (a la the E8), and a run-of-the-mill quadband GSM radio with EDGE. China's the first country to get the hookup starting next month, but Moto expects to take the ZN5 on a world tour over the course of the remainder of the year.

Casio G'zOne Boulder for Verizon does ruggedness in style

Casio GCheck out this here rugged successor to the Casio G'zOne Type-S. Verizon is preparing to offer their 'outdoors-y' subscribers a revamped take on the rugged Casio G'zOne handset.

What you see here is the re-designed, and shockingly pleasing, Casio G'zOne Boulder. The Black version is definitely a mean-looking handset, but we have to give it up to the Orange-colored variant. Talk about a handset that does ruggedness in style.

And, cosmetic updates aren't the only changes in store for Verizon subscribers looking for the military-spec shock, dust, and water resistance. The Casio G'zOne Boulder offers a 1.3 megapixel camera (up from VGA resolution on the G'zOne Type-S), push-to-talk on the EVDO Rev. A network, and a slimmer profile.

If spelunking and canyoneering were our cup of tea, we'd be all over the Casio G'zOne Boulder in Orange. That is, once it launches in the not-too-distant future.

FCC Reveals Sony Ericsson TM506

FCC Reveals Sony Ericsson TM506

The folks at the FCC has graciously released images of the first T-Mobile branded Sony Ericsson handset since the T610, in the form of the TM506. This clamshell handset shares many same functions as the recently unveiled Z780a, with changes to its style such as a neon green metallic finish around the inside of the clamshell, a metallic finish for the keypad, and soft-touch paint with black gloss on the front flip. Features include a camera of unknown resolution (I would say 1.3 megapixels is the bare minimum), tri-band GSM/EDGE/HSDPA support, A-GPS navigation, a MemoryStick M2 memory card slot, Bluetooth connectivity, a QVGA display and audio and video playback. No idea on when it will be available though.
