Narrated by Ving Rhames, the New Season Follows The "BET HIP HOP AWARDS" Thursday, October 23 at 10:00 P.M.*

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - Provocative. Unflinching. Daring. BET's critically acclaimed docu-drama AMERICAN GANGSTER returns for another compelling season Thursday, October 23 at 10:00 p.m.* Gangsters have been traditionally portrayed in films and television as European; AMERICAN GANGSTER expands this theory by focusing on authentic, bona fide criminals and sheds a different kind of light on the minds of America's worst offenders. Narrated by Ving Rhames, this season returns to probe the lives and crimes of America's most dangerous criminals, including "Monster" Kody, Larry Davis, Mutulu Shakur and J. Edgar Hoover and COINTELPRO, among countless others.

The first two seasons of AMERICAN GANGSTER spanned a wide range of subjects, telling stories from Harlem to Watts and points in between. They've included close-up views of the Chambers Brothers, drug-dealing emigrants from one of the America's poorest rural counties; Stanley "Tookie" Williams, who was executed for murder in California amid controversy regarding his real role in the founding of America's most notorious street gang, the Crips; Frank Lucas, the larger-than-life subject of the Hollywood blockbuster motion picture, also titled 'American Gangster'; and "Freeway" Ricky Ross - L.A.'s homegrown crack king - a hustler and pawn within a complex international enterprise.

Since its debut in 2006, BET's groundbreaking documentary series AMERICAN GANGSTER has earned a mix of critical praise and popular acclaim.

"American Gangster" is sober, intelligent and appropriately judgmental."
-New York Newsday

"Breaking away from its reputation as a home for music videos and little else, BET makes a savvy push into more challenging territory with this documentary series, which examines the lives and legends surrounding such notorious figures as Stanley "Tookie" Williams and "Freeway Ricky" Ross."
-Variety

"The stories are compelling, and feel more like news than history."
-New York Daily News

Now in its third season, this series reflects the life and times of American criminals, how their actions have affected the public at large, and the Black community in particular.

This season, AMERICAN GANGSTER will profile:

* LARRY DAVIS / October 23, 2008

Born and raised in the South Bronx, Larry Davis made headlines when he wounded six NYC police officers in a dramatic 1986 shootout after officers raided his sister's Bronx apartment to arrest him for murdering five drug dealers. Davis escaped, and with the help of family and friends, eluded capture for 17 days despite a massive manhunt, which finally ended with him surrendering to police only when assured by the presence of local reporters that he would not be harmed. In the subsequent trial, the prosecution contended Davis was a drug dealer who specialized in armed robbery and homicides. The defense team, led by renowned attorney William Kunstler, contended that Davis had been recruited into dealing drugs by crooked cops and the real object of the raid was to silence him by murder. When an all-minority jury acquitted Davis for acting in self-defense, 1500 police officers publicly protested against the verdict. Several subsequent trials resulted in several more acquittals on murder charges, until 1989 when Davis and his brother were convicted for the killing of drug dealer Raymond Vizcaino. After nearly 20 years in prison, and just a few days after agreeing to an exclusive interview with AMERICAN GANGSTER, Davis was murdered by a fellow convict.

* "MONSTER" KODY / October 30, 2008

Few gangsters emblemize the tragedy of gang life and the failed promise of so many who follow the path than "Monster" Kody Scott, best-selling author and career criminal. A legend in south central Los Angeles for his fearsome devotion to gang violence, Scott became a subject of mainstream fascination after the 1992 riots in LA cast a national spotlight on the conditions that led to that uprising. The publication of his gang memoir Monster written while in prison was once a frightening journey through his past and a tantalizing harbinger of his possible redemption.

* MIDGET MOLLEY / TBD

The son of a minister, this former drug lord of Atlantic City was once said to have earned over a million dollars a month, a position he flaunted in public by literally wearing a gold crown on his head. Busted in 1989, he spent nearly 20 years in prison, during which time his oldest son was killed on the streets. Deeply chastened by that experience, Molley renounced his former trade, and now toils as a high-profile advocate for the rights of fellow Muslims in prisons, whom he believes are routinely oppressed for their beliefs in the wake of 9/11.

* CORNELL JONES / TBD

D.C. drug kingpin Rayful Edmond's predecessor, Cornell Jones was a native son who quietly plied his trade in the shadow of the Capitol, and ultimately developed a network that funneled drugs throughout the major cities of the Eastern seaboard and even throughout Europe. Jones claims "credit" for the accidental invention of an aphrodisiacal mix of pot and PCP that was loosely known on the street as "love boat," and turned D.C. into a mecca for "angel dust." For years Jones stayed under the radar of law enforcement by developing a business model that emphasized harmony over violence, while keeping a low personal profile and funneling his own profits into legitimate businesses. He did it so well that his arrest and incarceration in 1985 created a huge vacuum in the D.C. drug trade, leading to unprecedented murder rates. Since Jones' release from prison, he runs a non-profit organization to help inmates prepare for life after prison.

* J. EDGAR HOOVER & COINTELPRO / TBD

The first and most famous director of the FBI consolidated his power through a combination of brilliant public relations moves and compromising personal files he kept on politicians who held his fate in their hands. Positioned as an avowed and implacable enemy of Communism, Hoover was often at odds with left-leaning Black leaders throughout his reign, including Marcus Garvey and Paul Robeson. During the tumultuous '60s decade, Hoover went further, undertaking a virtual counter-revolution against the civil rights movement -- with particular venom directed at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -- and ultimately enabling the Bureau to employ blackmail, smear campaigns, "dirty tricks," and even armed attacks on several leaders. The most notorious bureau program was the Counter Intelligence Program, or COINTELPRO, which was formed to investigate and undermine "subversive" organizations that were almost invariably aligned with the movement for civil rights. More than a decade later, U.S. congressional investigations would detail the scope of COINTELPRO's actions, which implicated the bureau in the framing and even murder of several prominent activists.

* MUTULU SHAKUR / TBD

Mutulu Shakur, Tupac Shakur's step-father and the father of rapper Mopreme, has spent the past quarter century in federal prison, thanks in part to his conviction for helping to plan and execute the $1.6 million robbery of a Brinks armored truck in New York in 1982 that left three people dead. In addition to the robbery, Mutulu was later accused of helping his sister Assata Shakur escape from prison, enabling her to flee to Cuba where she lives today. Despite incarceration in federal prison, Shakur has retained strong ties to contemporary politics and culture, and teamed with his late son Tupac to write a "thug life handbook," with a message against violence and drugs.

* GUY FISHER / TBD

The first Black owner of the Apollo Theater in Harlem was a dashing ladies' man, sports fan, bon vivant -- and drug lord. Growing up in the rough and tumble Patterson projects of the South Bronx, Fisher became the youngest and most flamboyant member of "the council," a consortium of top drug dealers in Harlem in the 1970s headed by Nicky Barnes. Both friends and foes paid tribute to Fisher's sharp intelligence and organizational skills, which kept "the council" going long after Barnes' own conviction and life sentence for trafficking in 1977. In the early '80s, Barnes turned state's witness against his former allies, claiming he was motivated by Fisher's romantic alliance with his favorite mistress. Convicted for trafficking and sent to prison for life, Fisher embarked on a remarkable transformation, writing novels, counseling inmates to avoid a criminal life, and earning several academic degrees, including a doctorate in sociology -- all the while keeping his own counsel from mainstream media. Now for the first time, Fisher, his family members, friends and associates tell their side of the story to AMERICAN GANGSTER.

* THE SHOWER POSSE / TBD

An incredibly violent gang with operations in the 1980s that stretched from Jamaica to New York to Miami and beyond, the Shower Posse got their name thanks to their frequent skewering of victims with rounds of automatic weapons fire. From their beginnings in the ghettos of Kingston Jamaica, the Shower Posse and their main posse rivals, the Spanglers, came to prominence as the muscle behind Jamaica's two political parties. Their ongoing battle culminated in the bloody election campaign of 1980, which resulted in an influx of arms to the island and the election of Shower-backed candidate Edward Seaga. The Shower Posse's acknowledged leader during this era, Vivian Blake, helps AMERICAN GANGSTER tell the story of their rise and fall.

* WILLIE LLOYD / TBD

Willie Lloyd grew up in Lawndale, Chicago; he came to prominence in the late '60s and was known for his ruthless demeanor and willingness to back it up. He was sent to prison in 1971 for the murder of an Iowa police officer, where his influence grew enormously. He was ordained the Lords 'official spokesperson' and eventually grew to become its 'king of kings' over the several vice-lords divisions. After his release from prison in the early '90s, Lloyd took over operations on the streets again - until he went back to prison again on weapons charges. In jail, he experienced an epiphany about gang life and its consequences. Released in 2001, he publicly retired from the gang he'd led for decades and embarked on a crusade to turn kids away from the life - forming an organization called "the cease fire project" and even lecturing at prestigious universities like DePaul. In 2003, Lloyd was shot on the street by gang members unhappy with his turnabout, an assassination attempt that has left him paralyzed from the neck down. Undeterred, he remains an articulate spokesman for "cease-fire" and related anti-gang efforts.

* THE ROMPER ROOM GANG / TBD

The Romper Room Gang was a group of notorious home grown bank robbers from the troubled Bay Area suburb of Vallejo. They robbed dozens of banks in the mid '90s, and had a healthy following, including rapper Mac Dre – himself convicted of conspiracy to rob. After serving his time, Dre emerged as a major underground figure in the Bay Area hip-hop scene and nurtured the careers of several other Romper Room robbers-turned-rappers as well. Mac and his cohorts also developed a big following in Kansas City -- where, tragically, he was murdered after a concert in 2004, allegedly by a Kansas City rapper he worked with named "Fat Tone" Watkins. This incident resulted in a revenge killing of Fat Tone in Las Vegas. Since his death, Mac Dre has become an icon in the Bay area, and especially in Vallejo, where violent crime remains out of proportion to its size and locale, and recently made headlines as the first city in California history to declare bankruptcy. Dre's legacy is carried on there by former friends and partners in crime who are now blazing new paths as artists and businessmen, though still shadowed by their pasts.

YES YOU CAN: Earvin "Magic" Johnson spoke to attendees of the National Black MBA Association's 30th Annual Conference and Exposition about the gratification and responsibilities of being a business owner, showing through his example that blacks should seek to dominate not simply in sports but also in business and financial endeavors. "It's all about the customers: You have to over-deliver in this market, over-deliver to them and to yourself," Johnson advised. "If you want to get into business, look to urban America — I wanted to invest in my own people, even though everyone said it wouldn't work."

By Makeisha Lee, Health and Nutritional Advisor

Prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and breast cancer are running rampant in the Black community. People are so scared these days, removing body parts seems to be the solution to beating and/or avoiding the disease. What is the truth about cancer?

First, all forms of Cancer are on the rise due to increased stress/strain induced lifestyles we lead, and unhealthy eating habits. This is a fact based on the latest study conducted by the National Academy of Naturopathy.

Secondly, our body is comprised of trillions of cells that are in a constant state of rejuvenation or cell mutation. Depending what you are either giving your body by way of unhealthy, harmful eating habits, or not giving your body nutritionally will determine you’re predisposition to cancer - not genetics.

Given this, cancer can strike at will on whomever, whenever the cells are being starved from oxygen, nutrition and clogged with toxins. When ever this type of mal-absorption of sufficient nutrients exists, the immune response is severely compromised, thus giving disease a V.I.P pass within our bodies. So how can we regain control over our inner terrain?

Here are 5 anti-cancer foods that offer 3 dimensional properties against cancer - preventative, curative and health promotion:

1) Organic Cabbage - According to Dr. Murthy of the National Academy of Naturopathy, “Cabbage speeds up metabolism of estrogen and is useful in colon cancer. Carrot juice acts as an antidote to lung cancer.”

2) Beet Juice - This is rich in sodium, potassium, prosperous, calcium, sulphur, vitamins B1, B2, B6 niacin which is known to have cancer curing powers.

3) Organic Juices in the Citrus Family - These include lemon, orange and grapefruit. Spinach, lettuce and broccoli juice act as antioxidants.

4) Daily Fruits, Vegetables and Protein - On a daily basis, no less than 100-150 grams of organic fruits, 100 grams of raw leafy vegetables, 1 fruit or 175-ml. of fruit or vegetable fruit juice should be consumed as the ideal nutritious meal. A clean source of protein is essential for healthy cell function. The first preference for protein source should be raw and meatless.

5) Wheat Grass Juice - This repairs damaged cells and a cancer patient should be advised to eat fiber rich foods like bran, oats, barley, along with Spirulina to boost nutritional value.

These are 5 of many healthy additions to implement into your everyday lifestyle of preventative actions. Of course, healthy lifestyle changes go a long way in reducing your risk and if already diagnosed with cancer; increasing your overall quality of life and life expectancy. Other external factors should be guarded against such as exposure to carcinogenic (cancer causing) substances and toxins. We should become well informed of all possible culprits.

While conventional methods of cancer treatments are preferred by some, there are many safe, natural alternatives readily available. These methods are in most cases much more effective, as they offer a fresh approach of drugless options. Unlike conventional treatments that destroy healthy tissue and cells, with a holistic approach, there is a heavy emphasis of reviving cellular function with enzymes, nutrients and detoxification.

LEADERSHIP IS INTERACTION: For its fifth annual Leadership Institute, the National Black MBA Association enlisted business guru and noted author Tom Peters to talk to Institute attendees about MBWA, or management by walking around, which he says is essential to being an effective leader. "Organizations are about human development and growth," he said. "Excellence can be obtained if you care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others think is possible."

CAREER CATALYSTS: National Black MBA Association President & CEO Barbara L. Thomas and Board President Bill Wells (center) opened the career fair of the organization's 30th Annual Conference & Exposition flanked by other NBMBAA board members and numerous corporate sponsors and attendees. The NBMBAA Conference Career Fair is one of the largest in the nation -- more than 450 companies exhibited and close to 10,000 job-seekers attended.

Finding the right condominium to buy in New York City can be a very stressful and dramatic process for hip-hop celebrities.

In fact, the old saying "money talks and bullshit walks" doesn't always holds true for some celebrities in the city of New York.

And just because you're different -- doesn't mean you don't fit in.

Jay-Z's story, also known as Shawn Carter, is an extraordinary one.

In 2002, according to an article in the Daily News, "Bad-boy rapper Jay-Z's decision to withdraw an offer for a swanky Tribeca penthouse has set off a nasty courtroom battle -- with the condo's owners saying neighbors sabotaged the deal.

The defendants, however, left nothing to chance, took matters into their own hands and set out to ensure through improper means that the sale of the unit to Carter would not occur...and it worked."

Whether racially motivated or not, the rejection from the tenants and their behavior towards the successful entrepreneur and hip-hop mogul was an eye-opener for many.

These are the kinds of things that make me mad. And yes, I do understand that Jay-Z, just like everyone else, has a past. And because his past is in the public eye, makes him an easier target.

Every person's existence is put here by a greater being, and regardless of how you may feel about someone's past, you are not the one to judge.

So before casting your stones, remember the good scripture "judge not -- for he will not be judged."

I have tried to catch-up with the savvy entrepreneur and hip-hop mogul to comment on his most recent experiences, but have not been successful.

It takes focused effort and time devoted to buying the right condominium in the City. With that being said, who needs the extra drama of the judgmental opinion of others?

Here are 7 tips to give yourself when buying a condo in NYC:

1. Hire A Real Estate Attorney. It's important for you to arm yourself with a knowledgeable attorney for all of your real estate needs.

2. Research/Survey The Potential Resident. Here again, knowledge is power. Equip yourself with lots of information. Interview the potential property thoroughly to avoid landlord and/or tenant rejection.

3. Prepare For Board Interviews. This means releasing personal information. The more prepare you are chances a smoother interview, and note -- a recent arrest is the worst time to go in front of a co-op board. Don't be known for having wild parties at your home and don't throw a big house warming party.

4. Hire A Real Estate Agent. Find someone who's going to deliver on their fiduciary commitment (obedience, loyalty, honesty, confidentiality, accountability, and reasonable care). Think standards -- you have standards, so be clear in your communications. In addition, hire someone who's confidence, strong, and possesses a unique personality for the tasks at hand.

5. Be Financially Prepared. Know how much money you really can afford to spend. FYI: Buying a new home right now could mean great savings because prices have fallen, and interest rates are dropping. However, if you're looking to sell or flip in the near future, take into consideration the economy and its financial hardship and anticipated duration.

6. For The Sake Of Privacy. Get references when hiring support staff -- babysitter, driver, and security. Ask them to sign a confidentiality agreement. Give another address to the press to keep folks from camping outside your resident, and keep your block clear from photo folks by having a back and/or underground entrance.

7. Think Bigger -- Become A Real Estate Developer. If you like the high-rise living versus the low-rise living, seek partnership and develop. Truth be told, it will be a lot easier -- no board approval is just one of the advantages.

And remember, in the end, no matter where you decide to live, the bottom line is your happiness.

WHY CAN'T WE TALK ABOUT CLASS? Michael Eric Dyson (left) said that any fruitful conversations about the black middle class must begin with an honest assessment of class stratum and end with an examination and adjustment in the actions that challenge the black middle class. He suggested an acronym of "B.L.A.C.K" that called for "buying black, learning black, acting black (in terms of upholding excellence and tradition), communicating black and keeping black (i.e. being willing to challenge those who threaten the black middle class' existence). Washington Post writer Michael Fletcher (right) encouraged members of the black middle class to push for public policies that help thwart the effects and close the gaps caused by residential segregation and inferior schools.

Dyson and Fletcher were panelists during the National Black MBA Association's "The Disappearing Middle Class and Its Effect on Black America" discussion, a kickoff to the organization's 30 Annual Conference & Exposition -- Catalyst For Change...Then. Today. Tomorrow. -- which took place in Washington D.C.

DOES BLACK-OWNED MATTER IN BUSINESS? Lisa M Toppin, vice president with Charles Schwab's human resources department, confronted audience members about how they approach working with black-owned businesses. "Too often when we patronize Black businesses, we're looking for the hook-up," she said, insisting that the black community not only seek out black vendors but also be willing to pay for the service it receives. Toppin was one of five panelists who participated in the National Black MBA Association's "The Disappearing Middle Class and Its Effect on Black America" panel, which launched the organization's 30 Annual Conference & Exposition -- Catalyst For Change...Then. Today. Tomorrow. -- in Washington D.C.

Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) - Every decade an iconic urban wear line manages to infiltrate all levels of American street fashion. First Cross Colors, then FUBU, and now dN|Be Apparel (dangerousNEGRO Black Empowerment Apparel) has emerged as the street's choice for edgy, yet fun gear. In this politically charged election year, dN|Be Apparel has seen an enormous rise in popularity due to the socially active messages associated with its clothing. As a result, retailers clamored to get their hands on the line when it debuted at the recent MAGIC fashion show. In addition to previously established presence in Brooklyn, Houston and the Bay Area, dangerousNEGRO can now also be found in Manhattan, Atlanta, Detroit, and Orlando stores.

Derived from historical depictions of A. Phillip Randolph and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as "dangerous Negro" leaders, dN|Be Apparel is best known for promoting education and social awareness through its clothing. With the Hip Hop community latching on to social consciousness as the agent of change during the late stages of the Bush Administration, dangerousNEGRO tees have been popping up frequently in music videos. Signature shirt "Smart is the New Gangsta," is flashed several times in the video for Bun B's leadoff single "That's Gangsta." Furthermore, established artists like dead prez and Royce Da 5'9, as well as up and comers 5th Flow and Reo, all recently made appearances on dangerousNEGRO's latest free mixtape offering. Rhymefest and Mistah FAB have also proudly donned their dN|Be Apparel and are in talks to contribute to the next mixtape. Hip Hop has found dangerousNEGRO to be the line with the political energy and fashionable swagger to drive its rebellious principles into the future.

Being multi-dimensional has contributed greatly to dangerousNEGRO's rise in popularity. Not only does the company have a large following with its dN|Be Apparel line, free mixtape series, and strong online presence, dangerousNEGRO is also known for bringing its empowering message to college campuses in the form of public speaking. Marketing Director Demetrius Walker has made dozens of appearances from Northern Michigan University to the New York Institute of Technology in recent months. With a lecture titled "CEOtivated," Walker has been dangerousNEGRO's public motivational voice, encouraging entrepreneurship in students of all races.

Seeking to infiltrate all avenues of social, political, and economic empowerment, dangerousNEGRO will undoubtedly continue to stand out in the fashion industry. Along with the expansion of the clothing line, look for dangerousNEGRO to become further entrenched in the Hip Hop industry and the public speaking arena in the near future.

Additional information about dangerousNEGRO can be found online at www.dangerousNEGRO.com. For interviews please contact CEO Sebastine Ujereh at (615) 364-6733 or sebastine@dNBeApparel.com. dangerousNEGRO(TM) is owned and operated by dN Group LLC.

Lewis, Founder & President, International Covenant Christian Chamber of Commerce.

"I believe the International Covenant Christian Chamber of Commerce is one of many avenues the Lord is going to use to position His people for the wealth transfer since Proverbs 13:22B declares '...and the wealth of the sinner [finds its way eventually] into the hands of the righteous, for whom it was laid up,' Amplified version. "Economic woes will prevail in the world's system, but economic growth and development will prevail for the children of God," asserted Ms. Lewis.

Towson, MD (BlackNews.com) On MLK Day Monday January 19, 2009 on the campus of Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Maryland, Rev. Medgar LePratt Reid, class of 1983, will announce whether or not he will seek the democratic nomination to be the next United States Senator for the state of Maryland.

"The Jesuit values of my formal schooling demand that I be a 'man for others'. I am simply crazy about Maryland and the people that populate this old-line state from the hills of western Garrett County to the wonderful ocean views on the eastern shore. I am a true believer in what my grandmother said long ago 'A new broom sweeps clean.' I don't think you can sweep any cleaner than with a person like myself with absolutely no elected office experience," said Rev. Reid.

Minister Medgar is a simple human being committed to helping others reach their highest and most passionate goals through developing multidimensional relationships of quiet power and influence founded on confidence, shaped by respect and held together with trust. He currently serves as Outreach Pastor at Elderslie-St. Andrews United Methodist Church (Rev. Terry McCain, Senior Pastor) and On-Call Staff Chaplain for the last 14 years with The University of Maryland Medical System / Shock Trauma.

As the first African-American President-Elect of The Rotary Club of Baltimore (est. 1912), Medgar knows about transcending barriers of race, party affiliation, religion and mental-physical-emotional disabilities. In 1994, he co-founded The Seven Words to Save Our Cities with The Late Honorable Parren J. Mitchell, first African-American Congressman representing Maryland, to address the needs of the unemployed and underemployed in Baltimore City. Rev. Reid is the husband of Dr. Stephanie E. Reid, a naturopath. He has two girls, Megan and Diamonique, who are both Ingenuity Students at The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. US Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Entertainer Hill Harper Support the NAM Voter Education Project

San Francisco, CA (BlackNews.com) - Registered voters across America, particularly people of color, are being urged to bring the proper credentials to the voting booth on Election Day because many states have toughened the identification requirements for people to be able to cast their ballots.

New America Media (NAM), a collaboration of ethnic news outlets, is working with the Advancement Project and a number of public officials and entertainers to ensure voters are aware of the identification requirements in their states. NAM is focusing the outreach efforts in nine states where the rules may confuse voters--Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

"The 2000 and 2004 elections reminded us that every vote matters,'' said Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), who is supporting the project. "Now, we've got to counter any efforts to discourage people of color from voting. We can do that by encouraging registered voters to take the proper identification to their polling place, and educating voters on how to make sure their votes will count."

Rep. Jackson condemned attempts to discourage voting, saying, "We need to be expanding the right to vote, not finding new schemes that keep people away from the polls. I'm proud of NAM's work for voting rights, and its call for people to come out in droves on Election Day to support candidates who will improve their quality of life and are committed to protecting voting rights for everyone--rich and poor, black, white and brown."

Actor Hill Harper, who is participating in TV public service announcements for the project, also urged voters to heed the warning to know the requirements in their particular states.

"This will be a close election, and it is imperative that every vote be counted," Harper said. "In the past, it was good enough to just urge people to vote. But with these new restrictions, we need for everyone to understand what is required for their vote to count. So, I am urging people to take the time to know the requirements in their state, and then go out and vote on Election Day. To bring about change in America, we need for everyone to exercise their civil responsibility and get out and vote."

For detailed information about what identification is required at their local polling station, voters are urged to call 866-MYVOTE1 or 866-OURVOTE. Someone will provide you with information about what you need to register and what identification you need on Election Day. This week, NAM will release radio and television PSAs to stations around the country, which include celebrities such as Harper, Actors Andre Braugher, Suzzanne Douglas, Kim Fields, Vivica A. Fox, R & B singer Lloyd, NY Knicks/NBA player Stephon Marbury, Actor Joseph C. Phillips, Producer/singer PURE, Actor/Comedian Chris Tucker, and others.

"This is an important project for our nation," said Sandy Close, NAM's executive editor and director. "We want to ensure that everyone who wants to vote can actually cast their ballot. That is what it means to be a democracy."

(Radio and television stations wishing to air the PSAs or do interviews, please contact Alicia Ingram, 404-493-1724. The PSAs will be available 10/10/08.)

IS THE BLACK MIDDLE CLASS DISAPPEARING? To kick off its 30th Annual Conference & Exposition in Washington D.C., National Black MBA Association President and CEO Barbara L. Thomas (middle) invited a distinguished panel to discuss the state and stability of the black middle class. CNN contributor and TVOne commentator Roland S. Martin (far left) served as moderator for the panel that included (from left to right): NBMBAA Immediate Past Chairman Alvin Brown; Washington Post economics correspondent Michael Fletcher; Charles Schwab vice president Lisa Toppin; author Lawrence Otis Graham; and Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson.

Audience members actively participated in the discussion by answering survey questions in real-time -- their answers established a baseline definition of "middle class" and helped guide the discussion by highlighting the group's behaviors, thought processes and tendencies. The majority feedback determined that someone would be middle-class if he or she held a bachelor's degree; did managerial work; made approximately $75,000; owned multiple investments (e.g. stocks, bonds, real estate and some form of a retirement account); and lived in the suburbs. When surveyed, 64 percent of the audience believed that the black middle class is disappearing. You can weigh in and share your thoughts on the characteristics and behaviors of the black middle class by visiting www.blackmbaonline.com and taking the survey.

ARE OUR LIFESTYLES KILLING US? Author Lawrence Otis Graham (far right) detailed how and why the pressures of being a minority, coupled with expectations from within the race, create a conflicted and strained experience for the black middle class, making it particularly fragile. "There is an intellectual dishonesty about class within the black community, and this helps make the middle class lifestyle much more stressful than a white middle-class lifestyle," he said during the National Black MBA Association's "The Disappearing Middle Class and Its Effect on Black America" panel, which launched the organization's 30 Annual Conference & Exposition -- Catalyst For Change...Then. Today. Tomorrow. -- in Washington D.C.

Based on the incredible true story, The Express follows the inspirational life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. Following his draft by the NFL, tragedy struck the inspirational life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. Following his draft by the NFL, tragedy struck the star athlete and he was never able to take the professional field. But his tale would forever change the face of professional sports.

Raised in poverty in the Southern Tier of New York State, Davis overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become an unstoppable running back for the Syracuse Orangemen. Under the guidance of coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid)-a hard-nosed surrogate father with an obsession for winning a national title. Davis overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become an unstoppable running back for the Syracuse Orangemen. Davis would develop from an impressive high-school athlete into a legend.

While everyone agreed Ernie Davis was a miracle player, few thought this quiet young man would become an icon for the burgeoning civil rights movement dividing America in the early 1960s. Refusing to play by the unspoken racist rules of the day, Davis broke through one barrier after another to alter the way fans looked at men of his color.

Though struck a terrible blow in the prime of his life, his spirit soared when most would crumble. Forcing his bull-headed coach to re-examine a life lived in color-based privilege, Davis would join the ranks of black pioneers who inspired a movement that smashed barriers on and off the playing field.

Starring:

Rob Brown (Ernie Davis), Denis Quaid, Darrin Dewitt Henson, and Charles S. Dutton

"Slave Routes: Resistance, Abolition and Creative Progress" Symposium Held at New York University October 9-11, 2008 Maya Angelou Hosts Opening Plenary

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Transatlantic slave trade by the United States, New York University will host Slave Routes: Resistance, Abolition and Creative Progress, an international symposium convened to examine slavery, the slave trade and its consequences from October 9 - October 11, 2008 in New York.

Maya Angelou will host the opening plenary at Harlem's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m., which will feature Amiri Baraka, Mary Frances Berry, Howard Dodson, Manthia Diawara, Jayne Cortez, Ali Mazrui, Rex Nettleford and Michael Gomez.

"Recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Transatlantic slave trade's abolition effectively provides an opportunity to pause and reflect upon the experience and progress of the nation's African-descended population," explained Michael Gomez, a professor at both NYU's Department of History and Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, who is considered one of the leading scholars on slavery in the Americas.

"The 1807-1808 abolition, though it ended neither slavery nor clandestine trafficking in enslaved Africans, was nonetheless a critical turning point in the long and difficult transition from slavery to citizenship. The extent to which full citizenship has been achieved remains an open question, and is inextricably bound to issues of race, gender, class, and culture," pointed out Gomez, who is also the former chair of the Department of History for both NYU and Spelman College and the author of Reversing Sail: A History of the African Diaspora and The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South.

Slave Routes will showcase three days of panel discussions, literary readings, musical performances, film, and video screenings presented by distinguished scholars, writers, musicians, visual artists, and organizers from the U.S., Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America. Participants include: Quincy Troupe, Keith David, Melvin Edwards, Maryse Conde, Eugene Redmond, Clyde Taylor, Saidiya Hartman, Robert Chrisman Kalamu ya Salaam, Randy Weston, Gloria Browne-Marshall, Seret Scott and Jenifer Morgan.

"Historically the arts were used by African people to document and protest slavery, the slave trade and consequences," said poet Jayne Cortez, co-founder of the Organization of Women Writers of Africa (OWWA), who is also co-convener of the symposium. "In every period along the way artists have been involved in the creation of resistance and freedom music, literature, dance and visual art and have developed works of art for places of remembrance as well as using points of memory as points of departure in art."

Panel topics at Slave Routes will encompass issues, such as: political, psychological and cultural consequences of the slave trade; health and education development along the route; colonial land issues in the 21st century; contemporary slavery; child soldiers/ workers; the ancient route of the slave and modem route of the African immigrant; and the ramifications of New Orleans.

"The Schomburg Center has been part of the UNESCO Slave Route Project since its inception over a decade ago. It shares the project's mission of 'breaking the silence' surrounding public discussions of the slave trade and slavery," said historian Howard Dodson, Chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. "The failure of the United States to commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade act this year is one reason why initiatives like the Slave Route Project are necessary. The Schomburg Center is pleased to join with NYU to continue to 'break the silence.'"

The slave trade abolition bicentennial has occurred during the historic run of the first black presidential candidate from a major party. "That Barack Obama may become the nation's first black president in the very year that we recognize the bicentennial of the slave trade's abolition is cause for sober assessment," Gomez pointed out. "Senator Obama's remarkable achievements suggest that many Americans are prepared to move in significant ways beyond certain racial barriers."

New York University's Institute of African American Affairs and NYU's Africana Studies Program are hosting the global symposium. Slave Routes, supported by UNESCO's Slave Routes Project, is co-sponsored by Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Organization of Women Writers of Africa, Inc, Syracuse University's Department of African American Studies and the NYU Institute for Public Knowledge. The African Diaspora Slave Routes Organizing Committee provides additional support.

Slave Routes' panels and screenings are free to the public. The concerts will have fees. Registration is required. For more information contact NYU Institute of African American Affairs at 212-998-4222 or http://africanastudies.as.nyu.edu/object/slaveroutes08

Jamestown, NC (BlackNews.com) - False allegations of abuse or neglect, legal fees, family court cases, investigations from child welfare, domestic violence - all these things and much more are the consequences of the “drama” that is presently affecting countless numbers of separated and divorced fathers and mothers. For single people, having sex too soon, ignoring warning signals and failing to have a plan in dating can quickly usher single people into the “drama” community.

For over a decade, Eric Legette, President/Founder of Fathers With Voices has assisted countless numbers of primarily separated and divorced fathers impacted by the drama. His own experiences within and outside of family court as he advocated for the right to remain in his daughters’ life led him to write Closing the Curtain on Baby Mama Drama: A Guide For Fathers Fighting For Their Children Inside and Outside of Family Court (Barnes and Noble.com). The book offers valuable information and insight on issues that poses a direct threat to relationships between fathers and their children after a separation and divorce. Mr. Legette provides insight for fathers on such issues as:

* The importance of educating yourself in family law
* Coping mechanisms to deal with the stress
* Ten examples of “Baby Mama Drama” and the solutions
* The reasons men should fight for their children

Based on conversations Mr. Legette had with both fathers and mothers impacted by the “drama”, he learned that single people are also at risk of becoming part of this significant social phenomenon which ultimately led to the writing of the e-book The Singles Guide: How to Avoid Baby Mama-Daddy Drama Relationships (www.fatherswithvoices.info).

Within this book he is providing for single people an up close view on the damaging affects the drama has on individuals financially, legally and emotionally. He is also informing single people of the same mistakes parents within the drama have made, they too maybe making the same mistakes as they are seeking a mate. Mr. Legette provides insight on:

* Defining the Drama
* How to conduct a dating interview (To avoid becoming part of the drama)
* What is BMDDS (Baby Mama-Daddy Syndrome) and how does it affect your dating decisions?
* The four high risk forms of dating

Both books are designed to address and provide effective ways to confront and avoid this horrific social problem that is negatively impacting the lives of so many people today. Mr. Legette truly believes the power of the drama is not so powerful that the curtains cannot at some point be closed!

Special Four-Part Documentary Series to Air on TV One, October 5 - October 8, 10PM, ET

Santa Monica, CA (BlackNews.com) - Keith Beauchamp describes it as a calling of the divine kind. Even non-believers are apt to side with the filmmaker that his passion for righting the wrongs of generation-old civil rights cases is far more than an artsy undertaking from an ambitious auteur. At 37, Beauchamp has become known as a sort of criminal investigator with a camera, having helped blow open the tight-lipped case of Emmett Till's brutal murder that occurred some 53 years ago. Beauchamp spent nine years uncovering and piecing together that complicated puzzle, and now he's embarking on a similar journey with Murder In Black & White, a series of four one-hour documentaries examining civil rights murders in the 1940s and 1950s produced for TV One. The documentaries will air on TV One October 5-8 at 10 PM ET.

We sat down with Beauchamp to learn why the FBI considers him a vital resource, how victims' families view his work, and what kind of impact he thinks Murder In Black & White will have.

Q: You spent nine years on The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till and now spend many hours digging up information on other cold cases dealing with civil rights abuses. Do you consider this a calling?

KB: I do. This is something I've dreamed about for so long. And it gives the families the opportunity to have a voice. So I feel like a mouthpiece for the family members and the victims. I really do feel
