By Connor Nixon Many species have become extinct over millennia, never to return to the face of the earth, but the Ivory-billed Woodpecker might not be gone for good; Loyalist bioscience professor and birdwatcher Wallace (Wally) Rendell could be the one who spots it. read more Read More...

Photo by Christopher ClarkeDalmatians, penguins, pirates, ogres and lions strapped on their skates this past weekend to showcase their talent and skill at the Yardmen Arena. The Quinte Figure Skating Club held a movie-themed event called Afternoon at the Movies on April 1. There were 23 different acts with themes from a range of different movies such as Shrek, Lion King, Wizard of Oz, Chicago, and 101 Dalmatians. The skater's experience ranged from beginner to senior and ages three to 20. Opening the show was a heartwarming, delicate performance called Father/Daughter, where dads and their daughters skated to the song My Little Girl by country artist Tim McGraw. Shortly after intermission, several little Jedi knights stormed the ice, protecting the galaxy -- or arena -- from the evil Sith Lord, Darth Vader. And as if the blast from the past wasn't enough, intermediate skaters wonderfully reenacted We Go Together from the Grease soundtrack. Hailing from Kingston, Jamie Forsythe, the 2006 Canadian Junior Men's bronze medalist and current Sr. men's champion of eastern Ontario, was the guest skater at the show. He skated in the first and second half of the show. He said it was great to be performing at the carnival. "It shows that a club has kind of appreciated what I've done in this sport and I feel really honoured for that. I think it's great to come out and see different communities and help them showcase their own talent," he said. Forsythe, 19, has been figure skating for 12 years. He represented Canada on the international level, recently winning a silver medal in the junior men's competition at the Triglav Trophy in Slovenia. He chose to participate in the show because his long-time coach Kim Crothers was there. She is also one of the show organizers. "We still have a really good relationship. I used to skate here for four years so it's always good to come back and see faces again," he said. Forsythe began skating when his parents put him into a learn-to-skate program so he could build up a strong skating basis for hockey but after that, he never quit figure skating. read more Read More...
By Patrick Hutchinson Respected volunteer: Sheila Turnbull sits at her desk on Jan. 31. Turnbull died Monday. photo by Patrick HutchinsonGenerous, compassionate and dedicated, Sheila Turnbull, founder of Bridge Street Church's Inn From the Cold program, died Monday at Kingston General Hospital, but her humanitarian spirit lives on in her daughter Patricia. Patricia volunteered with the Thank Goodness It's Friday program in its initial format at the church. Sheila Turnbull and volunteers provided full meals to anyone who needed them on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Patricia even helped to plant the seed of another of her mother's legacies, the Knittin' Mittens program, she said. It began while mother and daughter were volunteering together at the local food bank. "We were working on a food drive for Gleaners and someone had donated some wool. I mentioned it and was told to throw it away. Instead I said 'Well how about I take it home and knit some mittens?' So we were able to give away mittens as well," Patricia said. Sheila Turnbull, who enjoyed knitting and was part owner of the Knitting Nimrod co-op, would get a group of volunteers together on the last Saturday of October and knit mittens to be given away. As always, a good, hot meal was provided for volunteers. Patricia recalled one time in particular at the Knitting Nimrod when a small girl, no older than three or four, came into the store with her parents. She called the child over and let her pick a new pair of mittens out of the giant bag they had on hand. read more Read More...
