Another reason to love downloading Picasa for free! I got an email from a Digital Camera Help visitor who was having problems saving a slideshow he had created onto a cd to share with friends and family. It seems the cd would play the slides in a different order than they were on the PC! I was not familiar with the software he was using but did tell him that files are usually sorted (and played) in alphabetic order and an easy way to get the slideshow to go in the order you want is to use a number as the file name, like; 001, 002, 003, etc. Of course, renaming all the file names is only practical if your slide show is small!

I also suggested using Picasa and told him, “Using Picasa (free photo editing software from Google) you can save a slideshow in the same order that you had the photos arranged in your folder or album as long as you have the "Include Slideshow" option checked under step one on the "Gift CD" screen.”
Here are some keyboard shortcuts you can use while editing your photos in Picasa:

Ctrl-A: Select all photos in album
Ctrl-D: De-select photos
Ctrl-I: Invert photo selection
Home: Select the first photo in your album
End: Select the last photo in your album
Ctrl-H: Hold selected photos in Photo Tray
Ctrl-Enter: Locate the photo file on your computer
Ctrl-O: Open a file on your computer

If you wish to print multiple copies of the same print, do the following:

You can customize the row of buttons that appear at the bottom of your Picasa screen by using the following directions.

The Button Manager can be accessed from "Tools" >"Configure Buttons." Using the Picasa Button Manager, you can add or remove buttons or change the order of your buttons. For example, if you rarely use the "Print" button, you can remove this button, or if you frequently use the "Collage" button, you can make that button first.

At any time, if you would like to include all of the original buttons, just select "Restore to Defaults." This feature is available under "Tools" > "Configure Buttons."
Picasa's Timeline feature lets you instantly scroll through a chronological catalog of your photos. To see your photos in a timeline, click "Timeline" at the top of your screen. To move the timeline forward or back, you can click and drag an album cover or double-click one of the thumbnails to start a slideshow of the album.
Picasa can resize photos in two ways: when you export photos or when you email photos.

To use the “Export” feature in Picasa to reduce the image resolution (pixel count) and .jpg compression (image quality) of your photos, just complete these steps:

1. Open Picasa.
2. Select your image and press the “Export” button.
3. Under "Image Size Options" select the "Resize To" button and adjust the slider. Please note that the number of pixels you select with this slider determines the length or height of your photo (whichever is longer). The other dimension will be determined automatically in order to maintain the aspect ratio of the photo.
4. Select the desired image quality for your photo using the "Image Quality" drop-down menu:
- "Automatic" will preserve the original image quality
- "Normal" will balance quality and size
- "Maximum" will preserve fine detail for large file sizes
- "Minumum" will yield some quality loss for small file sizes
- "Custom" will enable you to select your own value

In order to reduce the size (in pixels) of photos you wish to send via email, please do the following:

1. Open Picasa.
2. Click "Tools" > "Options" > "Email."
3. Under "Output Options," set the slide bar under "When sending more than one photo, resize to:" to the desired pixel size.
4. Set the "When sending single pictures, resize to:" option to 'XXX pixels, as above" (XXX will be the number of pixels selected with the slide bar in the previous step).
5. Click "OK."
Picasa enables you to create a gift CD/DVD so you can share your photos with your friends and family. With a Picasa gift CD/DVD, you have the option of including auto running slideshow and a copy of the Picasa software. The only downside is you can not add music. Here are the steps to create your gift disk:

1. Select the photos you wish to copy to a gift CD/DVD.
2. Click "Gift CD" button.
3. If you want to include the auto-running slideshow, check the "Include Slideshow" box.
4. If you wish to include a copy of Picasa on the CD/DVD, check the "Include Picasa" box.
5. You can add more photos to the gift CD by clicking the "Add More" button.
6. If you want to resize the photos, you can do so using the "Picture Size" drop down. If you do not wish to resize your photos, make sure to select "Original Size".
7. Enter a name or title for your gift CD.
8. When you are ready, click "Burn Disc" button.

Picasa presents powerful features for organization and optimization of digital images. The article provides a full review of the use of this software for amateur photographers.

The tremendous increase of using Digital Photography in the past few years gave birth to a growing need for good, easy to use and free picture editing and organization software.

There are not too many good and satisfying softwares for ordinary people like you and me that just want to download photos from our new digital camera which were taken on our last vacation. We don't need the complicated and deadly frustrating features that require half a year course to understand. Most of the softwares on the market today have been tailored for the use of photography professionals, graphic designer artists and image processing technicians. These softwares are very very expensive and hard to use.

All we need is an easy way to organize, edit and share our pictures. This is when Google decided to develop software just for our needs. And so they came up with 'Picasa'.

Picasa is surprisingly intuitive and easy to use, has very comfortable interface and relaxing graphics. The moment you enter Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures, you will be surprised of how many pictures Picasa found that you didn't even know they exist. As a photographer, I like easy ways of storing, editing and producing digital pictures. As a moderate user of Adobe Photoshop, I have now discovered Picasa (http://picasa.google.ca), Free Software from Google that allows you to simply catalogue, store and perform some post production enhancements to your digital pictures.

Like many Digital Photographers, you may want duplicates (multiple versions) of your digital pictures, to which you apply various enhancements - cropping, B&W, softening, etc. If you are using Picasa, then you will need to apply some file renaming to ensure your pictures are grouped together: picture original, picture copy1, picture copy2,,,picture copyn. Currently, duplicating a digital picture within Picasa does not produce a filename which preserves the desired filename sequence (ascending sort - alphabetic order) - "Original, OriginalCopy, OriginalCopy (2),,OriginalCopy (n)"

Do not despair. Here is a simple fix that will ensure that your 'CD of JPG images' will playback properly on an inexpensive DVD player ($29.95 at Walmart), which is capable of playing back (like a Slide Show) stored JPG images.

A little background on how Picasa creates JPG file copies on your computer. When you copy/duplicate a file in Picasa it creates the copied file with the following prefix - “Copy of IMAGEnnnn.jpg”. Since alphabetic sequencing has "C" coming before "I", this means that all of the prefixed files with “Copy of” are saved in your computer [picture] directory ahead of the original JPG images, which all start with “IMG” or “IMAGE” - Ouch! But you want all your JPG picture files to start with "IMG" or "IMAGE", just like they were originally created on your digital camera.

Apply a simple and consistent renaming of these "Copy of" JPG files and you will get the desired playback sequence. Rename these “Copy of” files so that the original filename prefix is preserved - “IMG” or“IMAGE”. Just remove the “Copy of” prefix and add an appropriate ascending numeric sequence suffix to each of the copied files. For example, IF your original JPG file and the Picasa two copies were: IMG_2787, Copy of IMG_2787, Copy (2) of IMG_2787 THEN you would rename the TWO Copy files to get this grouped sequence: IMG_2787, IMG_2787-2, IMG_2787-3

Now you will be sure that the filename sequence will match your desired Slide Show sequence.

You can submit an enhancement request to Picasa to fix the way they name copied files (Adobe has is right!). You can submit your request to: Picasa Help Ticket Submission (http://picasa.google.ca/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=contact). The more requests the sooner they fix this inconvenience.

A free image editor download is usually a regular version with the really good effects and extras grayed out with pop-up messages urging you to buy the $29+ upgrade to the full version. Other photo editor free downloads are trial versions and expire in a certain number of days which are pointless to download unless you are thinking about buying the full version. I recommend you download Picasa which is a free photo editor download from Google because it is completely free and it has so many features it is hard to imagine what you are missing. Picasa has the most bells and whistles that I have ever seen on a totally free photo editing software.

Download Picasa 2 free and you get all these cool features:

• Picasa organizes your entire collection while you watch, scanning the images on your computer and automatically sorting them by date.

• New visual effects can improve your photos – add richer colors or change the photo to black and white.

• Zoom. Pan. Tilt. Get the angle you intended. Go in closer and move the focus slightly to the left or adjust perspective and straighten crooked photos.

• Put the same picture into multiple albums without taking up more space.

• Automatically resizes and attaches pictures to email messages.

• Picasa's “Blog This!” button automatically transfers selected pictures up to your blog.

• Send out dozens of pictures instantly using the "Hello" button in Picasa while you chat with friends and family who are also online.

• With Picasa, you can turn a group of photos into a presentation with one click, and then share your slide show on a CD.

• Picasa automatically fits your pictures perfectly onto the expensive paper used by your home printer.

• You can pick photos straight out of Picasa and upload them directly to your favorite photo finishers to order prints and other products.

• Use Picasa’s free Web Albums for posting, sharing and viewing photos.

• Picasa’s automatic photo organizer will download your pictures to any TiVo® Series2™ DVR connected to a home network.

• And more!

The boom of popular and affordable Digital Cameras has generated an increased Need for Digital Imaging Software. One important requirements is the ability to Organize and perform basic image enhancements on the Digital Pictures.

The most common requirements on Digital Pictures are:

- The ability to organize the digital material and access to all digital pictures from one application

- An overview of all taken pictures over the time

- The ability to perform basic editing operations like red-eye removal, improve color saturation and sharpening

- The ability to create Slide Shows in a very easy and intuitive way

- To burn Gift CD´s with Pictures inside

- To create Photo Web Pages for the publication of digital pictures on the web

- To add Labels for every image

- To create high quality prints

Additional to the mentioned basic functions, the application should be able to Perform a Ranking within all available images in order to choose the best ones.

Also the ability to order Photo-prints, Photo-Books, create Posters, collages or Movies (i.e. to create DVDs). The movie should be able to use also high quality Video compression Codecs like DivX.

While Mac Users have a "built-in" application with iPhoto able to perform all mentioned features, PC Users had to buy additional software like Adobe´s Album.

In the meanwhile, Free Software like Picasa is available, offering similar functions as expensive specialized applications.

Picasa is being promoted by Google, there are several places where the software can be downloaded for free, i.e. in http://www.101homebiz.com/picasa

The User Interface of Picasa is intuitive and easy to use. All functions are where one would expect them. The application makes a solid and reliable impression.

It is obvious that Google is intending to put a feed in the fast growing Digital Imaging business. With the free distribution of this excellent software product the Search Engine giant has performed a very good choice.
