Jorgen Tharaldsen, the product director for Funcom, recently sat down with Strategy Informer and answered a few questions regarding Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and its future plans for the Xbox 360 version, which has been expected for quite sometime despite a lack of a concrete release date. Unfortunately for console users who were hoping to get in on the MMORPG action set within the world of Hyboria, they may have quite the wait ahead. When asked how the development process of the console port was going, Tharaldsen stated that it was not high on their list of priorities at the moment due to the PC version taking center stage. In his words: "Development on the Xbox 360 version is not our key priority, as there are a massive amount of PC gamers already playing the game, and we rightly have the focus on them. While there is a dedicated specialist project team working on Xbox, the PC version will remain our top priority for now".Tharaldsen went on to talk about how the console version will benefit from the different updates made to the PC version and the issues experienced by the team during the PC launch. Should the same thing occur when the Xbox 360 version is released, the team will have the upper hand by knowing how to deal with launch issues should they rear their ugly head. Tharaldsen also elaborated on the differences between the two ports in the area of design and how he feels Age of Conan will fair in the console MMO market: "Seeing how a console and a PC is inherently very different in control input, HD space, patching cycle, available memory and so on, there are naturally many challenges involved in this work, and while we have overcome many there are more to go, not just from a design and tech standpoint, but also from business, community and marketing. The time will come for MMO games, or similar experiences, to do great on the consoles though, and hopefully Conan will be one of the pioneers in that regards." While Age of Conan has been experiencing some problems from the get-go, a lot of people want this game to succeed. Not everyone plays PC games, and a console MMO would definitely pull more gamers into the fold with those who actively participate in online play. Hopefully Funcom can work these kinks out and become one of the forerunners in that genre. Don't get your hopes up just yet, though. Tharaldsen closed the interview by stating that gamers should not expect the game to arrive on the 360 anytime soon - at least not this year. Wed, 08 Oct 2008 02:25:00 +0200
Developer start-up Riot Games has been laboring for a good long while on League of Legends: Clash of Fates, and it shows in their faces. They aren't tired or weathered -- they're excited to finally have a chance to show someone, anyone, what they've been working on. Their creation is at once both familiar and new. Players of the popular WarCraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients will immediately draw comparisons to League of Legends. Just like in DOTA, players control a single hero, leveling him up through the course of play in a world whose art looks strikingly similar to WarCraft's visual style. The similarities shouldn't come off as too surprising, though, since Riot Games' development staff includes some of the team that helped develop DOTA Allstars, the most popular version of Defense of the Ancients. And while it all seems incredibly similar to the popular Warcraft 3 mod, Riot Games CEO Brandon J. Beck and president Marc Merrill come off as sincere in their effort to create something that stands on its own. The characters in League of Legends aren't your standard fantasy fare and include some pretty far-out, tongue-in-cheek avatars like yeti riders and a little girl who can use her teddy bear to summon a monster to aid her in battle. A number of characters are supposed to be revealed as the game nears its 2009 release date. Wed, 08 Oct 2008 01:41:00 +0200 It's an unfortunate fact that Xbox 360s are tough to hook up in cars and planes. Some Halo 3 fans have undoubtedly managed it, but for the rest of us, there's Halo: The Cole Protocol to keep us going between team slayer matches. Set during the Human-Covenant conflict, the newest Halo novel stars the Spartan Gray Team as "unlikely alliances are formed and shattered, altering the course of the humanity's epic struggle for survival." Those darn alliances, why can't they ever stay in one piece? If you were into Ghosts of Onyx, Fall of Reach or any of the other Halo novels, then you know where your $14.95 will be going come November 25. And if you're a real superfan, you can spend $23.95 on the audiobook and listen while you play. How about it, Halo fans? In the meantime, you can see the cover after the jump! The thin veil that exists between fantasy and reality became slightly more transparent this morning when Harmonix and MTV Games announced that gamers rocking out to Rock Band 2 can now order customizable assets for their "band" by visiting the new specialty shop on the Rock Band website. By using the new photo creator tool equipped with Rock Band 2, you can pose your in-game characters and insert them into a variety of backdrops, add special effects, and then apply the new image to your personal profile or band pages where they will be rendered in full 3D. And if that's not enough, the developers have gone one step further by partnering with the online printing company Zazzle, which offers gamers the luxury of having their band immortalized for all the world to see. Once you have used the Photo Tool to capture your band images or logo, you can then upload them with the Merch Booth tool and turn them into buttons, key chains, posters, stickers, t-shirts, and plenty of other merchandise. If you would like to go one step further and revel in the madness that this game is creating, you can even have your very own six-inch figurine generated from the in-game avatar you designed in the Bandmate Creator tool. The figurines created by Z Corporation will run you about $69, while the prices for the above referenced merchandise will cost anywhere from $2 (buttons) to $29 (t-shirts) plus shipping. Namco Bandai invited press out to their architecturally-striking Tokyo offices for an advance look at much of what they have on deck for the Tokyo Game Show. The presentation featured only a single new game announcement: We Ski and Snowboard for the Wii. It follows the growing standard on the Wii of using cute Mii-like characters for sports games. The game simulates the footwork of the two winter sports with the balance board -- positioned like a skateboard for snowboarding and transversely for skiing. We've got more information and first screen shots in our preview. The company's powerhouse anime franchises dominated the remainder of the lineup. Origins and Infinite World carried the Dragonball banner, but Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm easily upstaged them with its stunning good looks. The shading technique being used by the game take a noticeable step up from anything else out there, which results in a game that looks like a 3D cartoon. New trailers were also shown for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World and Splatterhouse. Disappointingly, the Splatterhouse video showed very little actually in the game and failed to offer anything more than we'd seen in EGM's recent cover story. It also began with an awkward real-world video intended to look like the gruesome butcher's workshop, but in an era where we've all seen Hostel previews, it came off looking like an amateur video for YouTube. If you've been reluctant to check out Final Fantasy XI because a credit card was required for registration, then it might be time to give the game another look. Square Enix has announced a new 14-day trial program for their flagship MMORPG, and the only requirements are a valid email address and age verification -- meaning your Visa card can sit this one out. Once the trial period is up, players will have 90 days to activate a paid account to preserve their character's progress. Aspiring White Mages can head to Square's FFXI website to sign up, download the client, and get started on thinning out Vana'diel's killer bee population. It may not have that new car smell of Warhammer Online or World of Warcraft's impending Lich King expansion, but this FFXI trial should provide a valid alternative for those of us not entranced by talk of Death Knights and leveling through PVP. Besides, everybody loves chocobos, right? Wed, 08 Oct 2008 00:30:00 +0200
According to a recent report from MTV Multiplayer, Lara Croft is playing favorites in the console race. The downloadable content for Tomb Raider: Underworld will only be available on the Xbox 360 version of game. When contacted by Multiplayer, publisher Eidos indicated that the content is not a timed exclusive and well never appear on other platforms. In addition to this, they said there are currently no plans to bring other content to the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of Tomb Raider: Underworld. As an owner of multiple platforms, I know which version I'll be picking up, unless there are major technical issues, of course. How about you? Tue, 07 Oct 2008 23:40:00 +0200
The PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Dynasty Warriors 6 has been out for quite a while now, but gamers who were looking forward to the PC or PlayStation 2 versions hitting retail on November 18 can now get a small taste of what to expect with a PC demo. Currently available on FileFront, KOEI's Dynasty Warriors 6 demo lets you try out the new "Renbu" unlimited combo system, which has been described as more frantic than what we have grown accustomed to with the series. The updated character renderings designed by Omega Force should also be aesthetically pleasing, as they are more stylized and crisp than previous PS2 iterations of the series. Not only have these nice little changes been made to the tactical action game, but for the first time ever in the series you will finally be able to climb, destroy walls, and swim. Of course none of that stopped us from finding the title to be totally average in 1UP's review, but check out the demo for yourself and let us know what you think. To get the demo, you can visit FileFront by clicking here or by hitting the badge below. After you are finished playing around with it, be sure to drop us a line in the comments section and let us know what you thought of it. ![]() |
