The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats ranges, on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, covering an area of 285 square kilometers, was declared a reserved forest in the 1950s, and upgraded to a wildlife sanctuary in 1962. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its animal and bird population, as well as its magnificent teak forests. The Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary lies 20 kilometers east of Thrissur. The catchment area of the Peechi Dam was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958. The Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the lush Palapilli and Nelliampathy forests, and contiguous with the Chimini Sanctuary. The large sanctuary, covering 125 square kilometers, has everything from picture postcard forest trails, a large lake, many kinds of birds and animals, and a high hill with a summit rising to 900 meters. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary lies near the Kothamangalam in the Idukki District.
