One more blurb about the last People Don't Dance No More boat party of the summer with GILDAS + MASAYA from Kitsune, and KRAMES this SUNDAY AFTERNOON. The remaining advance tickets are are here but are going fast. If you don't get a ticket but still want to come, be sure to check here or over at David's site and we'll let you know if there are any tickets left (we don't want to leave you stranded on the dock!). Aaaaaaaand now, the best news is if you want to come for cheap or free, I'm giving away TWO...

One last outdoor freakout before we head back to the cold, dark recesses of the New York disco night... People Don't Dance No More is excited to close out our summer boat parties with a very special set from our foxy friends from Paris: GILDAS + MASAYA from Kitsune, with a sure-to-be hot opening set by KRAMES (Cobra Kai), and of course DAVID BRUNO and myself. Hosting duties are being handled by our friends NICK THE DUKE + CHASE. It all happens SUNDAY September 7th. This party is an extremely intimate affair with only 200 fashionable friends squeezing on...

Apparently these girls are called First Aid Kit and have just signed to the Knife's Rabid Records. Regardless, this is something very special....

Gregory and the Hawk - Voice Like A Bell This is the sound of waking up to clarity, of coming to terms with a good decision. This is the sound of knowing when things are finished -- when it's time to throw that stuff out, to sell that old thing, to finally forget that phone number. It's not angry, resentful or scared - it's confident, clear. Some might argue that this is one of the more conventional releases on Fat Cat, the folks that previously brought us Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Max Richter, etc. Their previous singer / songwriter entries...

At the risk of stating the obvious, this one's all about the rhythm. The notes are just window dressing to that syncopated beat, which is familiar but new. Takka Takka - Everybody Say. It's tempting to tie this sound to what Vampire Weekend and others are up to - the whole Paul Simon/Peter Gabriel influence, and maybe it's a valid point. But I think the common thread is minimalism, or then again, maybe (I know I sound like an ass, but stick with me) pointilism - with each staccato note and periodic strum combining to make this song. That idea...

Tomorrow night my DJ pals James Friedman and Eamon Harkin are rocking their party Prime Time at Love and they've got a very special guest DJ all the way from Norway, the disco insanity of Todd Terje. I expect it to be awesome, and to get you in the mood, Terje recorded a little promo-mix for the party, which you can download here. Hit the jump for the full flyer and party details!...

I've posted this track before. It was just last month, when One For The Team released their new album Build It Up on iTunes. Now the band has released the thing for reals, at all the usual places. You need to buy it. One For The Team - Best Supporting Actor. If you're in the Twin Cities area, you should also go to the release show, which happens tomorrow night at the 7th Street Entry. There are actually two shows: an all-ages one for the kids at 5 pm, and another for us old folks at 9. (Or do the...

Ack! You know what I meant to do but forgot about? I meant to post this track late last week, so I could promote The Coast's show at The Nomad in Minneapolis. What if I tell you that they'll be at the Record Bar in Kansas City tonight? And The Hi-Dive in Denver tomorrow night? Okay, I feel better. The Coast - Tightrope. The Coast is from Toronto, and they have a new record out called Expatriate. It's good, and this is my favorite song from the album. If you've read Music For Robots for a while, you may know...

The big city has got a handful of great reasons for you to get out doors this weekend... Saturday is another "Car-Free Summer Streets" day in Manhattan (see details here), then later in the day Environ hosts the Warm Up at PS1, then at night Thee Wurst Beach Party rocks the sand at the Water Taxi Beach. Finally, on Sunday the legendary disco DJ Nicky Siano is the guest for Sunday Best at the Yard. I love New York in the summer! Details on the parties after the jump......

Well dang, what to say about a song that just makes me feel good? I was planning on writing a big post about the Grateful Dead: what I love about them, what I dislike about them, how some bands today are taking the best parts of the Dead's sound and making it their own. But maybe this isn't about the Dead at all. The Donkeys - Excelsior Lady. There's more than a striking resemblance to Garcia and co., but this song is actually just about a moment, any moment, that makes you realize that everything is going fine. The narrator...

The Lord Dog Bird - The Gift of Song In the Lion's Den. This is the sound of things completed. It's the sound of the epic journey home, with muffled war drums in the distance, summer crickets on the wind. It's the sound of a refreshing plunge in the ocean from a decent height, a tall drink on a slow day. Finding your way around this song is easy. Listen: I don't know much about the Lord Dog Bird, other than they have a new album out on Jagjaguwar. It came out last tuesday and it's self-titled. The vocals echo...

Update, 8/12: my record is now available on iTunes and Amazon. Download away! The time has come, my friends. It is time for me to shamelessly plug my new record, Flyover State. Here's the title track. David Brusie - Flyover State. I've shared my music here before, and felt just as sheepish about it as I do now, but I'm trying to spread the word in any way I can. Feel free to listen and download, and if you feel so moved, comment in any way you want. I'm open to feedback. Flyover State has been in the works for...

The $5 advance tickets are selling fast - seriously, we've probably got another 25 or so left - so if you don't have one yet, get one here. The Softrocks - Saturnalia. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there are a lot of good bands in Minneapolis. And look, I know you're thinking "So does where I live, what's your point?" To which I reply: no, really. The scene here is ridiculously fertile and cooperative; though there's some healthy competition, bands share bills and befriend each other. These bands emerge from apartments on Garfield, Hennepin and Lyndale, get opening spots at the Triple Rock and the 400 Bar, sell a few records, get played on The Current. For the most part, however, these Twin...

I've been thinking a lot lately about bands that make music that isn't complicated, and doesn't need to be. This came to me while listening to Bits, the latest from Oxford Collapse. It's chords, it's a backbeat, it's singing (mostly) in tune. And really, that's all I need. Love Is Chemicals - Over Land, Over Sea. Same with Love Is Chemicals. I'm not saying this is overly simple music, nor am I saying this band couldn't come up with something more complex. I'm saying they don't need to, because this song works. Love Is Chemicals are from San Francisco. They...
