I recently purchased a new car battery. I thought I was getting a good deal until I got home and looked at my receipt. The store clerk had deducted $10 for my turning in my old battery, then he added it back on again. What had felt like a good deal suddenly became a rip-off that made me angry. Maybe it was on honest mistake and he hit the wrong key, but it still did not feel good.

A purchase that seemed like a wise decision, and turn out bad. And what initially may seem like a bad purchase, might later appear to be a wise decision. What can you do to make labeling machine purchases that are the right decisions today, and tomorrow?

It comes down to several key points: quality, value and customer service.

At times low cost, low quality may seem to be the right decision. I do a lot of wood cutting and I've purchases several inexpensive chain saws. The result was that I was purchasing a new chain saw every two years. The first one was great, it lasted five years. Based on that I kept buying another cheap chain saw each time one broke. What a poor decision. I could have spent half the money and had a better machine, that lasted.

It's the same with label printers. The major cost in labeling a facility is the cost of installing the labels. If your labels don't last, you'll be spending money to redo work sooner than it should need to be redone... in other words you'll be buying another chain saw. That's why quality is important.

Value is also important. Why pay more than you need to pay? But value is more than just the dollar cost of an item. You need to know what you are getting for your dollar, what comes with a printer? How easy is the printer to set up and use? How quickly supplies can be changed? A printer that costs more, in many cases delivers a greater value.

It is also important to remember that no matter how good the product is, something can go wrong. That's why customer service is important. Can you call and get answers right away? What happens if your machine needs repair?

This is a DuraLabel blog, so obviously I'm talking about DuraLabel PRO industrial label printers. You'd might guess that I'm going to say that the top-of-the-line DuraLabel PRO 300 is more expensive, but worth it. But that's not the case. If you purchase a DuraLabel PRO 300 as a part of a supplies package, you can save enough money to essentially get your DuraLabel PRO 300 free. There is no better price than free!

So when you are evaluating quality, value and customer service, take a look at the DuraLabel PRO 300. It's the best you can get, delivering outstanding quality and value, and backed by Graphic Products' nearly 40 year record of unbeatable customer service. Give us a call today at 1-800-788-5572. You'll be glad you did.

There is one label printer that delivers incomparable versatility when making arc flash labels. The new NFPA arc flash code will require specific information on labels. With DuraLabel PRO printers you have the flexibility to make your arc flas labels the way you want them... and comply with the new NFPA code

All DuraLabel PRO printers offer four options for making arc flash labels.

Preformatted die-cut labels provide a standardized format that brings consistency, along with complete information, to your arc flash labeling program. Two types of die-cut labels are available. Labels with formatting lines and labels without formatting lines.

For greater flexibility DuraLabel supplies include two-color continuous vinyl. It provides white labels with a color header. Print the appropriate signal word in the header, and make the label whatever size that is needed, with whatever information you want on the label.

Another option is to use solid color continuous vinyl. You'll hae complete flexibility to make your labels any size and with any information you need. You can even combine several stripes of tape to make large format labels (signs).

With a DuraLabel PRO printer you are in control. DuraLabel supplies give you the ability to make the arc flash labels you need, make them the way you want, and make them to meet the new NFPA arc flash labeling code.
DuraLabel supplies give you the best performance... the best durability... the best clarity... and the best value. Why? Because with DuraLabel PRO supplies you are dealing with the labeling experts. We don't just say things because they sound good, we know what we are talking about and you can see our experience and expertise in the quality of our products.

Let's look at DuraLabel PRO vinyl tape as an example. What makes a quality vinyl tape?

The are a number of factors such as the smoothness of the vinyl surface. The quality, type and thickness of the adhesive? And the thickness of the vinyl.

Vinyls for printing labels and signs are available in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mil to 10 mil.

Off the top of your head you'd think that the thicker the vinyl, the better the quality of the labels it makes. Bigger is always better... right? But, that's not right. Thicker vinyl does not mean more durable vinyl. The truth is that the opposite is true. The thinner the vinyl, the longer the life of the vinyl. To get ten-year vinyl, for example, means the thickness will be in the range of 2.0 mil.

Thick vinyl has the advantage when it comes to direct "body" hits. A thinner vinyl may show direct impact damage before thicker vinyl will. However, thinner vinyl has better "self healing" properties for scuffs and minor damage. With thinner vinyl small holes will reseal or can be worked to reduce the amount of damage. This also helps to keep the adhesive intact.

However, the most common type of label damage is called "grazing". This happens when something moving rubs or brushes against a label. This could be a person walking by, or water (rain) flowing over the label, or even just wind.

Where thin vinyl vastly outperforms thick vinyl is in the edge profile. The friction of "grazing" can literally peel the label up over time. When the edge of a vinyl label begins to come loose, even by a small amount, its days are numbered. Once the edge seal is broken, air will dry up the adhesive at a much more rapid rate and water or chemicals will degrade the adhesive. The thicker the vinyl, the more susceptible it is to peeling up on the edges when it comes into contact with anything that causes friction: water, wind, compressed air, cleaning apparatus and so on. Human actions are probably the single biggest factor in how long a label will last i.e., cleaning tools compressed air, pressurized water etc.

The low edge profile gives thin vinyl a distinct advantage in this area as there is less surface area around the edges. Less surface area means less friction and edges that stay stuck.

The truth is, when it comes to vinyl labels, thicker is not better. DuraLabel vinyls are designed to have the optimum thickness. For most applications this is 3.0 mil. This provides excellent resistance to both "grazing" and "body hits", resulting in the longest life.

Have you ever faced a difficult labeling situation? One so impossible that it seemed you should just paint a metal sign, bolt it on and call it good? The DuraLabel PRO 300 can make your life easier.

For example, getting a label or sign to stick to an oily or greasy surface seems impossible. Not with the DuraLabel PRO 300. The new oily surface label tapes stick and stay stuck on oily surfaces. That's something that simplifies your day!

Or what about rough surfaces or surface with a low surface energy such as some plastic and painted surfaces? With the DuraLabel PRO 300 these are not a problem. The new HI-Tack label tapes stick and stay stuck on low energy and rough surfaces. They can even be applied to fabrics!

Here's a difficult situation. How to you label shelving inside a freezer? Again the DuraLabel PRO 300 delivers a solution with low temperature tapes that produce labels that can be applied at temperatures as low as -10 degrees F.

There is a growing recognition of the need for arc flash labeling.

Arc flash labels warn of the potential for an arc flash (an electrical arc explosion). Although this hazard has always existed, the need for labeling is just now being recognized. Arc flashes happen more frequently than expected and are so violent and hot that the resulting injuries can be very series.

The DuraLabel PRO 300 is the ideal printer for making arc flash labels. There are a number of reasons:

The Industrial Labeling Suite software is included with the DuraLabel PRO 300. This software package includes arc flash database software that allows you to quickly create, print and store arc flash labels. Or the DuraLabel PRO 300 can be used to print labels directly from arc flash calculation software such as the EasyPower software.

With the DuraLabel PRO you can select the style of label that is best for your facility. Die-cut labels with pre-printed DANGER and WARNING headers are available. Or for more flexibility use two-color continuous vinyl or single color continuous vinyl. You can even print arc flash warning signs, such as signs that are 2' x 3' in size.

If you need an arc flash printer, the DuraLabel PRO 300 will deliver. It's the printer that get the job done, and done right... the first time.

For more information about the DuraLabel PRO 300, arc flash labeling, and arc flash printers, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-788-5572. you'll be glad you did.

What makes the DuraLabel PRO 300 the quality industrial label printer?

Part of the answer is the high resolution 300 dpi printing. But anyone can buy a 300 dpi print head and stick it in a printer. There's more to a DuraLabel PRO 300... there is common sense and careful thought.

The problem with 300 dpi printing is that it is slow. And slow means that it costs you money. So what isthe common sense thing to do? Find a way to make a printer that delivers 300 dpi printing at a high speed. The DuraLabel PRO 300 has done this. By using a high speed computer processor the DLP300 processes print jobs faster, resulting in your label coming out ofthe printer sooner. You get high quality printing AND high speed.

Don't settle for anything less than a DuraLabel PRO 300. Not only will you get quality, you'll be saving money because you'll be buying direct from the manufacturer. Check out the special DuraLabel package deals to save even more. CAll 1-800-788-5572 today!
DuraLabel keeps things simple. They provide unbeatable quality and save you money.

How do you know you are getting unbeatable quality?

A key reason is because with DuraLabel PRO supplies you are dealing with labeling experts who have a long history of supplying only the best equipment and supplies. Because with DuraLabel supplies you are dealing with labeling experts who have extensive R&D and quality testing departments. Because with DuraLabel supplies you are buying from a company that wants you as a customer for the next 100 years... and that means they must deliver quality--both in their products and their service--or you'll find a better dealer.

For example, the "obvious" answer is not always the right answer. Is bigger always better? Not when it comes to vinyl tapes. Thicker tapes mean more durable vinly, but it does not mean more durable labels. Thicker vinly tends to return to its original shape, curling to the shape it had when it was on a roll. The result are labels that don't print as well and that pull free (become unstuck) sooner. The best quality vinyl is more that optimizes vinyl durability and label durability. This happens at a vinyl thickness of 3.0 mil.
A new DuraLabel printer has entered the world! The DuraLabel PRO 300 is the new high resolution label and sign printer that works hard for you.

High resolution printing means blacks are blacker, reds are reder and the fine details are even clearer. The DuraLabel PRO 300 prints with a 300 dpi resolution resulting in unbeatable print quality for industrial, business, educational and military labeling and sign making needs.

BUT...

There is a down side to high resolution printing. The higher resolution the printing, the longer it takes to print a label.

BUT...

The DuraLabel PRO 300 has licked this problem. It includes a new high speed processor, and greater memory, resulting in the print job being processed quicker and delivering both high resolution and high speed printing. With this new DuraLabel printer you can't lose.

The DuraLabel printer has a number of accessories available that can make your job easier.

One of the most popular is the DuraLabel battery. It provides power for the DuraLabel anyplace you need to take your DuraLabel. One battery charge can print hundreds of labels. Many facilities are setting up mobile carts with a DuraLabel printer, battery, laptop computer, and selection of DuraLabel supplies. The cart can then be pushed anyplace labels or signs are needed. It is an excellent way to create a visual workplace and support lean manufacturing efforts such as 5S, Kanban, TPM and Kaizen.

One of the most important DuraLabel accessories only costs $20. A dust cover protects you investment in your DuraLabel by keeping dust, dirt and debris away from the printer. This is particularly important if your DuraLabel is stored in a shop, maintenance area, or other location where dust and airborne particles are common. This material can get into the print head or gears and result in poor quality printing, alignment problems, streaks, or other issues. While the solution is simple, get the machine cleaned. The better option is to prevent the problems in the first place. A $20 dust cover accomplishes that goal.

If you need to travel with your DuraLabel, then the hard carrying case is what you need. Designed to fit under an airline seat, this case is designed to hold and protect the DuraLabel printer, accessories, cables, and supplies. It's rugged design is guaranteed for life.

Visit the DuraLabel web site for more information about DuraLabel accessories.
The DuraLabel printer and lean manufacturing form an outstanding partnership. The versatility and flexibility of the DuraLabel means it can handle just about any visual communication task related to lean manufacturing.

What is lean manufacturing? Why are labels and signs an important part of lean manufacturing? Visit the Visual Workplace (Visual Communication) web site to learn about both. This web site is dedicated to providing information about lean manufacturing techniques such as 5S, kaizen and kanban. These are techniques that can help your business reduce waste, improve productivity, get organized, improve quality and increase customer satisfaction. It provides introductory information about each of these lean manufacturing techniques, allowing you to determine whether they may be effective in your facility. They also offer a printed guide for each of these lean techniques. Free copies of each guide are available.

Visual communication means to have needed information available at the time and location where it is needed. This is usually accomplished using labels and signs. That's were the term "visual workplace" comes from. A Visual workplace is one in which even a new hire knows where they are in the facility, what the safety hazards are, and what they need to do in case of an emergency. All they information they need to know is immediately available, without being presented in a confusing manner.

An example of visual communication would be a system that combines color coding, text and graphics to aid workers in returning tools to their proper location. Signs with text identify tool storage locations. Color coding makes it quick and easy to identify the correct general location a tool belongs in. A color coded shadow (graphic) of the tool identifies the specific location. This system of visual communication helps ensure tools are returned to their proper location. It makes returning a tool fast and easy, and it eliminates errors. That is what you get as the result of effective visual communication.
When you purchase DuraLabel vinyl from the OEM (Duralabel vinyl supplies) you are assured of quality. Don't assume that all vinyl is the same. Trust the supplier that has both extensive testing and extensive R&D behind all the products they sell.

What can go wrong with vinyl?

With DuraLabel supplies you do not need to worry about dimbles in the vinyl. If the vinyl is not manufactured properly small dimples can form in the vinyl surface. The result is poor quality printing when making signs and labels.

With DuraLabel supplies you do not need to worry about labels coming loose. Poor quality adhesive, or imperfections in the adhesive such as an uneven coating, can result in labels that do not stay stuck. Of course, labels must be properly applied to a clean surface. But when properly applies they should last many years, not just a few months.

With DuraLabel supplies you do not need to worry about labels fading or the printing scratching off. Poor quality ribbons may produce printing that appears to be good, but then you find that it quickly fades or comes off. There are many types of ribbons available. Matching the correct ribbon with the material being printed is important. Just as important is using a quality ribbon.

The DuraLabel web site is involved in an updating process over the next three months. You can already see significant changes, with the change to a new header and new home page. The purpose of the upgrade is to increase the amount of information available, and to make the site easier to read and easier to navigate.

Most industrial label printer web sites provide very little information about the machines they offer. However, the DuraLabel PRO and DuraLabel supplies offer such a unique opportunity to cut your labeling and sign making costs while improving quality, that there is a lot to say. And we are not the only ones saying it. As you'll see on the the new DuraLabel site, lots of DuraLabel PRO customers have good things to say about the DuraLabel PRO printer, DuraLabel supplies and the outstanding customer service that backs the DuraLabel PRO.

Plus we'll be adding MORE FREE GIFTS. We are working hard to produce additional, quality lean manufacturing and industrial labeling best practice guides. You'll see the first three of these appear on the DuraLabel web site with a few days. And more are coming.
A new DuraLabel PRO site focusing on lean manufacturing methods has just come online. It is called The Visual Workplace. It starts with discussing one of the foundations of lean methods, visual communication. It then provides separate sites covering kaizen, 5S and kanban. Other lean methods, such as TPM, will be added in the future.

A visual workplace is one in which needed information is available at the location and time when it is needed. Daily maintenance procedures are posted on equipment and machines. Work areas are identified by signs and floor markings. The end result of a visual workplace is that a new employee can find there way around, and identify equipment, processes and procedures as well as an experienced employee--because the information is provided visually.

In addition to information the lean methods each have a quiz you can use to test your knowledge of kaizen, 5s and kanban. Each quiz has 12 questions and shows you your results, compared with how others did, at the end of the quiz.
The lack of arc flash labeling is a significant problem in nearly half of all facilities. A new best practices guide from the makers of the DuraLabel PRO details what is required to have arc flash labeling that meets all codes and standards.

The Arc Flash Labeling Best Practices Guide starts the process with an inspection of the facility. This first step documents the condition of any existing arc flash labeling, and identifies locations where arc flash labels are needed. It then describes the information that should be on an arc flash label, how to make arc flash labels, and even how to remove old labels.

The following is the Table of Contents for this best practices guide:

What's the big news about the DuraLabel PRO? Nothing!

That's right, nothing.

It took over two years for the DuraLabel PRO to be developed. Nearly a full year was devoted to testing and making improvements. The result is that there has been no need for upgrades, patches or fixes. The DuraLabel PRO is the industrial label printer that works... it gets the job done by making quality, durable labels and signs.

Whether you need to make signs and labels to support 5S, or label pipes in a hospital, the DuraLabel PRO is the machine that will get the job done... right.
Two additional DuraLabel videos have just been put online. They show how to load supplies into the DuraLabel PRO printer. You'll be surprised at how quick and easy it is to load DuraLabel supplies. The videos are available at:

There are two types of supplies for the DuraLabel PRO.

Specialty supplies come mounted in a simple cartridge that drops right into the DuraLabel PRO.

All other supplies come on rolls that are easily placed into the DuraLabel PRO.

In both cases supplies can typically be changed in about a minute.
