New Book, Endorsed By Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Profiles Successful Latino Engineers to Inspire Young Math, Science Students

Latinos are the fastest growing population group in the United States but comprise only 3 percent of the nation's scientists and engineers. That's according to the National Center for Education Statistics and it is not good news, given a growing need for U.S. engineering and other math and science expertise and innovation in the increasingly competitive global marketplace.

To address the need for more Hispanics in engineering, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is endorsing the new book Ay Mijo! Why Do You Want To Be An Engineer? as a way to get the word out to young people about the benefits of pursuing a career in the field.

A little more than a year after forming, the Oklahoma City Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists will be the host for the 2007 Region 5 Conference, March 30 - 31.

"Reporting Terrorism from the Frontlines" is the theme of this year's conference. Workshops and panels will focus on the changing role of the media in today's world.

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), is celebrating its first ever Support Teen Literature Day on April 19, as part of ALA's National Library Week celebration.

Support Teen Literature Day will include an event with the Chicago Public Schools featuring local authors and the band High Strung.   The event also will be the official launch of YALSA's 2007 Teen Read Week initiative, which will be celebrated October 14-20, 2007, with the theme "LOL @ your library."   The humor theme is meant to encourage teens nationwide to make time to read something light and entertaining just for the fun of it.

At the American Library Association (ALA) 2007 Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, January 19 - 24, the ALA Council adopted a resolution in support of immigrant rights to access to information. The resolution states that: "America's immigrants are a strong and valuable part of the social fabric of this nation. The library community opposes all attempts at the local, state and federal level to restrict access to information by immigrants."

Leading reading experts have selected adolescent literacy as the hottest issue for 2007, according to Jack and Drew Cassidy's annual review for the International Reading Association.  The "What's Hot, What's Not" survey, a staple since 1996, draws a distinction between what is "Hot," meaning the issue is receiving attention, and what is important--the "Should be Hot" category.  In this year's results, experts agreed that adolescent literacy is both.

In recognition of the many positive contributions being made to Latino literature by publishers and writers worldwide, Latino Literacy Now, created the Latino Book Awards in 1999. Due to the dramatic increase in recent years in nominations of literary works from Mexico, Central and South America and Spain, the title of the awards was changed to the International Latino Book Awards in 2006.

Nominations are now open for books with a 2006 publication date. The awards will be presented during BookExpo America 2007, taking place at the Javits Center in New York City. These awards honor literary excellence in a variety of categories (see page 3). In 2007 First, Second and Honorable Mention recognition will be given in all applicable categories.

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has named Target as the official 2007 national sponsor of El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros (Childrens Day/Book Day), known as Dia. This annual celebration held April 30 spreads "bookjoy" by linking children of all languages and cultures with books.
