I found this a couple of weeks ago while scanning through microfilm at the Lepper Public Library in Lisbon, OH: It’s from a now defunct newspaper published in Lisbon called The Journal c. 1870 (I forgot to write down the issue date).  And some people say genealogy is boring!

Just found an interesting article on something we’re all familiar with: Family stories that are just plain wrong! Did you know that my great-great-great-great-whatever-grandfather saved the king by cutting off his own foot?? I haven’t been able to either verify or debunk this one yet, but I’m sure you can guess my thoughts on the reliability [...]

Just read this post at Genea-Musings (an excellent blog) about US city directories. They are, indeed, an underused resource. One time I looked up my dad in the old City of Youngstown directories out of curiosity and found out he had the same phone number from the time he moved here in 1963 until he [...]

So, I’ve been thinking about how we store our genealogical data recently. Every genealogy program has its own format and some programs can’t read every format out there. It can be a real pain to exchange data.  Every program seems to have its own flavor of GEDCOM and the format is somewhat limited anyway. I think [...]

I’ve been out of the loop for a while and just heard today about many of the sites associated with USGenWeb moving off of the RootsWeb servers.  You can read more about it here and here. I think it’s great that they are disassociating (is that a word?) themselves with The Generations Network.  I’ve always believed [...]

If John McCain becomes president then I will forever have to hear the question, “Are you related to the president?”  See, the surname McKean is pronounced the same as the Senator’s surname, despite what that guy from Spinal Tap says.  Somewhere along the way it got mutilated into all sorts of spellings, from McCain to [...]

Often in our search for our ancestors we forget that we would have made very little progress if not for the help of volunteers who have spent countless hours compiling information, trekking through cemeteries, digging through dusty old records, etc.  We take a lot, but how much do we give back? I’ll admit, I don’t do [...]

I was in Fairfax, VA, for Christmas and didn’t get a chance to wish everyone a happy holiday.  I’m back home and just wanted to wish everyone a happy new year while I’m still coherent enough to type!  So Happy New Year!  If you don’t hear from me for a couple of days it’s because [...]

I found this video about the Obama/Cheney family tree while fooling around on StumbleUpon.  I offer no opinion of the contents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJpFswlO-uY
