Some parents of autistic children have called for Savageâs firing after he described autism as a racket last week. âIn 99 percent of the cases, itâs a brat who hasnât been told to cut the act out,â Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday. Savage then went on to say, âWhat do you mean they scream and theyâre silent? They donât have a father around to tell them donât act like a moron, youâll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up! Act like a man! Donât sit there crying and screaming, idiot.ââ My son is not a brat. He's not a moron, either. He has a memory that amazes me in it's capacity, a sense of humor that leaves my sides hurting from laughter, and a depth of love, patience and perseverance that Mr. Savage is quite obviously unaquainted with. If a simple spanking, time out, or verbal tirade could "cure" him, I would have gladly administered any to keep him from having to live in the world as he is right now. Instead, I chose to have him evaluated by a team of developmental psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and early childhood intervention specialists who not only tested him, but observed him clinically both in and out of a classroom setting for six solid months before arriving at their diagnosis. Since receiving proper guided therapy, I have seen his communication skills grow leaps and bounds. I've seen him not only acknowledge, but engage his peers. I've watched him grow and learn and experience and do things that I worried he'd never accomplish. He surprises me every single day, and while I would wish his disability away in a heartbeat, I have to say that sometimes I am grateful for it, because it's taught me so much. ----- Send your love across the miles - send some fun and send a smile - Hug somebody today at http://www.hugsdirect.com Tue, 22 Jul 2008 21:37:14 +0200 I was such a fan of The Golden Girls. I must have seen every show at least 2-3 times oi not more, and loved her performance in the show as Sophia. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iTMkQDONxgujdSXbarMnrHCD_7FwD9232O201 Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:21:46 +0200 We used to love taking kat to this one park in NYC which was only 5 mins by foot. In fact, I think I still have a photo of Kat in the fountain pool there. This article mentions the park Carl Shurz, where the mats get as hot as almost 167F. I'm all for safety mats (and I admit we loved that part about the park) but what are the chances of a child peeling of their shoes??? Seems nowadays you can't even find a haven in your local park. Either they're too elaborate and you need to supervise constantly or dilapitated and you still need to supervise constantly...Gees!! |
