In keeping up with the lastest in the music industry, Jack Johnson has a new music video and song entitled "What You Thought You Need". I checked it out on Yahoo! Music and I'm posting the video here for your feedback! His last album, In Between Dreams, made him really popular - so I can't wait to hear his new album, due to release in February 2008. It's called "Sleep Through The Static". What do you think of the video and song? Post a comment to let us know! The buzz in the music industry is that Jessica Simpson has temporarily parked herself in Nashville, Tennessee - the capital of country music - to work on a new album with Columbia Nashville. Apparently, since she is from Texas and she thinks that she was meant to sing country music. In recent interviews, Jessica Simpson has said that the new album will be available sometime in 2008. She hass said that Martina McBride, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and Reba McEntire have been inspirational to her because of the strength in female country singers. In this collaberation with Willie Nelson, I guess country wouldn't be too far of a stretch for her. She already has the cowgirl hat and boots...I guess we won't have to wait too much longer to see how it turns out. Here's to 2008...a year full of new music! What do you think? Would you buy a Jessica Simpson country album? Post a comment to let us know the consensus! This is a video for an up & coming artist: Ingrid Michaelson. Her song "The Way I Am" was recently featured on an Old Navy Commercial, which is where I first heard her music. I scoured the internet looking for her - and I found the video on YouTube. Her song "Keep Breathing" was apparently also featured on Grey's Anatomy on last season's finale - but I missed that. This video for "The Way I Am", however, is now in rotation on VH1 - which is amazing for a new and fairly unknown artist. Last I heard, she was also going to be on a spot on NPR on December 21st. Have any of you heard of Ingrid? Post a comment to tell me what you think of her new video! Alanis Morissette will get back into the music scene this coming spring with her new album "Flavors of Entanglement." These songs are set to be produced by Guy Sigsworth, who has also worked with Madonna and Bjork. Alanis says that she envisioned an album that pulled in her various musical interests, "a combination of everything" from organic instruments to hip-hop beats. She hopes to whittle down the album to 11 tracks in the upcoming weeks. Some of those tracks are "Not As We," which is solely piano and vocals, and "Moratorium," in which Alanis speaks of her readiness to stop repeating bad patterns. The theme of the album is to explore Alanis’s real life struggles over the last few years in addition to the more political struggles in the world. In an interview, she said, "Really, in the end, the personal struggles are political. Our emotions align themselves with larger symptomatic things in the world. We face a large war out there, but Flavors of Entanglement more closely reflects the war in peoples' living rooms... the icy silence at home, versus the big cold war." If you are as excited as I am to hear the newest songs, she is going to start touring with Matchbox Twenty in January 2008. You can get the tour dates here, from Matchbox Twenty's tour schedule on Billboard. A U.S. District Judge decided in Kid Rock's favor last week in a lawsuit brought against him by Troy Landry. Troy accused Kid Rock of ripping off his music and said that Kid Rock's 'Somebody's Gotta Feel This' sounded strikingly similar to a song Landry had released in 1994. Testimony was heard from both sides and a side-by-side comparison of the songs was performed and it was decided that they were not substantially similar and that Kid Rock could have independently created the tune. The judge noted that "a layman would not view the works as substantially similar." As celebrity lawsuits go, Landry named a whole list of people to sue that included Atlantic Recording Corp, Kid Rock, and many others in 2004. After several years in court, the question about the 8-second tune has been resolved. Attorneys for Kid Rock made a statement about it saying the rock star's song had a "fairly common progression", even though Landry claimed the 8-second hook was repeated over and over again and made up 45 percent of the song. Michael Novak, Kid Rock's personal attorney said "Whenever you have a hit record, you can pretty much plan on attracting this kind of lawsuit." Somebody always wants a cut of the profits! Darren Barefoot has created a website to compel and direct us all to send money to musicians whose music we have benefited from via illegal music downloads. It's called Dear Rockers. Here is how it works: You pick a musician and then you write them a letter. You then have to scan or photograph the letter and send it to an address specified at DearRockers.org. You mail off your letter along with $5.oo and then supposedly you are forgiven and you can listen to your illegal music guilt-free. I think it's a great concept! So, if you are one of those 'fans' that didn't pay for Radiohead's new album 'In Rainbows', go to DearRockers.org and redeem yourself! Do you know anyone who has used this website and actually mailed in the money? If so, post a comment to let us know! I'd love to do this myself, mostly for taking music from Alanis Morissette when I was a teenager...I think I'll go do that now. As a long time fan of Alanis Morissette, I was so happy to hear that she will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during Canadian Music Week, which is in March 2008. Do you remember Jagged Little Pill? That album won a Grammy Award - and it had several radio hits such as "Ironic" and "Hand In My Pocket". Alanis Morissette has also received 2 Golden Globe nominations in her career - I remember one of them was for the song "Wunderkind" that she wrote for the movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". Just for the sake of it, you can check out the video for "Ironic" below. If you want to, post a comment to tell us what your favorite Alanis Morissette song is! Gwen Stefani has a new music video for her song "Early Winter"! Check it out! Gwen is an amazing artist and has even branched out to design a famous clothing line called L.A.M.B. I love it when celebrities are multi-talented. Gwen's music, clothing, and shoes are all pretty great. Any Gwen fans out there? What do you think about the new video??? Post a comment to let us know! Recently, Radiohead decided to go against the music industry and do something completely different for their new album release. 'In Rainbows', their new cd, was offered only through Radiohead's website and it allowed users to pay whatever they wanted for the album. Yes, I'm serious. Most people paid $0. Well, why not? If you can get it for free...why should you pay, right? As online cd sales decline due to illegal music downloads and distribution, people were definitely wondering if this offering by Radiohead was just a publicity stunt. I guess we can't be sure, but it would seem that musicians would have a hard time making a living if they are giving their music away for free. The article I read about it did say that on average (aside from the fans who took the album for free) it was purchased for about $6. That is a far cry from the usual $19.99 or more price you will pay for the actual cd in a music store and about half of what you'd pay on a place like iTunes for just the download. I wonder if we will continue to see this trend. Before Radiohead did this, I heard Prince gave away his last cd for free. Does anyone know what is going on with this? If you do - or if you got either one of these albums free - post a comment to let us know about it! MPFree offers free music downloads, too (and the artists get paid their full royalties). Just register and you can immediately begin earning new music downloads just by reading and responding to great offers or by filling out short surveys. It's easy and free to sign up! With The Sick Puppies on a band tour with Evanescence, their upcoming concerts are looking to be pretty awesome! Check out this blog post from The Sick Puppies website: "Hey guys! So we finally started the tour with Evanescence a couple of days ago. It was great. We met the band and the crew, everyone seems really cool and ultra professional which is going to make it a really easy tour to be on. Gives us more time to write some new songs. We played our own show at Captain Hirams resort last night as well. That was fun! They treated us like kings as soon as we rolled in and we had a blast. It started to pour down with rain the hour before we got out onstage and it was an out door stage with just a little awning to cover us. But we got by, the crowd was awesome. But one of the most fun parts of the day was what we did around lunch. I have always wanted to do this but have never been able to afford it. Yesterday we jumped on some hi powered jet ski’s and went around the lake. It was amazing. It makes you feel so free being out in the middle of the water like that. AND THEY WERE FAST MAN! Our merch guy Jerry was on the back with me and I knocked him off at least half a dozen times. Then he took over and I got bowled off the back a couple of times too. It was great to be able to do something like that, then roll back into the club, dry off and do sound check. So now begins a 6 week run with one of the bands that we became fans of a few years ago when they dropped their first album. I must admit, after watching Evanescence from side of stage I had to kind of pinch myself. I remember not being able to go to their concert in Australia a few years back because I couldn’t afford it. We were saving up to come over to the states and do what we are doing now. Irony anyone? Shim" Check out their music videos below if you haven't heard of these bands - they are really great! Evanescence - Lithium The Sick Puppies - All The Same Don't forget, you can download these songs and more for free from MPFree. Sean Combs, or Diddy, as he is known to the public, has made a deal with Ciroc Vodka to begin a brand building campaign. More than just a rapper, Diddy is now very well-known for his celebrity endorsements and business deals. One of his other big endorsements is for Proactiv, which has apparently done very well. Diddy claims that it's not just an endorsement deal, but that he will have a 50/50 share in the profits and that he will be giving this brand his daily attention. He is not just a celebrity rapper, you know, he is a brand ambassador. But I think I liked him better when he was just making music. Even though he changed his name a whole bunch of times (Puff Daddy, Puffy, P Diddy, Diddy....), he was still a good music artist. I think my favorite song of his was 'It's All About The Benjamins'. That was definitely a good song. What was the last song that Diddy has come out with anyway? Does anyone know? Please post a comment to fill me in if you have the answer! And if you haven't signed up with MPFree, yet - go ahead and do that today! You can earn free music downloads of Diddy's music - or songs from all your favorite artists for that matter! It's free and easy. While you are busy earning free music, I wanted to give you a list of the top 10 hottest songs on The Billboard Music Charts for this week. Go ahead - download them! 1. After all of the drama she's been through recently in her life, it will be good to see her on stage. All of her US performances had been cancelled which her record label said was "in a continued effort to support Amy Winehouse's well-being". Amy Winehouse's songs are a modern twist on smokey, sultry blues with a sexy twist. Her song "You Know I'm No Good" is just really different from what you usually hear on the radio. It's really gritty, and I do hope to hear more of her songs in the future. As a nominee, she will be performing on November 15th, at the MtvU Woodie awards, which is MTV's 24-hour college network.
Some of the other nominees include Linkin Park, Gym Class Heros, Lily Allen, and more. If you haven't seen it yet, go ahead and check out Amy Winehouse's video: Hope her performance goes well! Think you're having a bad day? Not compared to Jammie Thomas! Ms. Thomas was just fined $220,000 for illegal music downloads and music file sharing on the internet. A few of the major music record labels sought damages for 24 of the 1,702 songs she is accused of offering for download through the file sharing program Kazaa. That's $9,250 PER SONG! This type of file sharing is considered to be illegal because it violates copyright laws. The U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act is very strict. It says that the copying of copyrighted music, other than making a copy for your own use, is illegal. It is even considered illegal to purchase a CD and convert the files to MP3 format for your own use, because it is considered unauthorized adaptation. The laws can be confusing, but you want to make sure you are doing the right thing. Free is great, but not at the loss of your favorite artists. They do need to get paid to entertain us, because that is what they do for a living. If the musicians had to do it for free, I'm sure there would be a lot less music going around - who wants to work for free? If you are concerned about the rules of internet piracy and you want to make sure you are following the guidelines, you can check out this overview of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act. So, be honest, how many of you have ever downloaded something from the internet that you weren't sure if it was legal or not? If you found out what you did was illegal, would you still do it again? Feel free to comment and let us know your thoughts on this very touchy subject! If you are interested in getting music downloads the free and legal way, feel free to check out http://www.mpfree.com/. Yesterday, I was lucky enough to get tickets and attend a show at Revolution in Ft. Lauderdale. It was a Dropkick Murphys show, with Everybody Out and The HorrorPops. If you haven’t heard any of these bands – they are definitely worth checking out. I am a long-time fan of Dropkick. They have been around since about 1995, and their genre is an Irish-infused punk rock. In my opinion, their older music is better than their latest album, though. Last night’s show was mostly the newer songs, peppered with a few of the older songs that made me love the band in their beginnings. I did enjoy a newer song from their set, though, entitled “I’m Shipping Up To Boston”. It’s the theme song for the Discovery Channel series “Lobster Wars”, and it’s definitely worth a listen. As for The HorrorPops, I have become a big fan of their music in the last two years. Their music is a cool combination of Psychobilly, Pop, and Punk. It’s an exciting mix that Patricia Day, the lead singer, pulls off like no one else could. Patricia plays an upright bass while bolting out lyrics and the band really puts on a good show. Unfortunately, the set was way too short with only about 5 songs being played. Of those, my favorite is still “Baby Lou Tattoo”. I didn’t get to see Everybody Out, because I got to the show late, but others said they were really talented and that their opening act was great. I’m sorry I missed it. Below is Dropkick Murphys latest album and tracks, which you can get FREE at www.MPFree.com! “The Meanest of Times” – Released September 18,2007 1. Famous For Nothing 2. God Willing 3. The State Of Massachusetts 4. Tomorrow's Industry 5. Echoes On "A." Street 6. Vices And Virtues 7. Surrender 8. (F)lannigan's Ball 9. I'll Begin Again 10. Fairmount Hill 11. Loyal To No One 12. Shattered 13. Rude Awakenings 14. Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya 15. Never Forget I was just talking to a co-worker and she told me something interesting. As she was listening to the radio in her car this morning, she realized that in a 30 minute commute to work, she only got to hear 3 songs. That's right. Three. The rest of the time she was listening to commercials. Anything from advertisements for mattresses to cosmetic surgery...and we both agreed that it was ridiculous. In hopes of hearing new music or maybe a song that she already likes, she stayed tuned in. But, by the time she got to work, she really felt duped! It's my opinion that radio stations are run by greedy station managers who really only care about one thing: getting advertisers to give them money. Who cares about loyal listeners, right?
The solution? An MP3 player. And lots of MP3's. That way, you can listen to whatever you want, whenever you want. You can burn them to cd's and share them with friends. When I mentioned that to my co-worker, she complained about having to pay an average of $0.99 per song or download MP3's illegally - neither of which she is willing to do. So, I told her about http://www.mpfree.com/. All you have to do is sign up and spend a few minutes of your time - and you can earn free MP3's. I bet tomorrow, she won't be listening to the radio! Download these songs and many more for free at Mpfree.com. Have you ever stolen a CD from a store? Or perhaps a piece of clothing from the mall? Hopefully you have answered no to these questions, because for lack of a better phrase, stealing is just plain wrong. Now let me ask you this: Have you ever downloaded music from LimeWire, Kazza, Morpheus or any other free downloading program? Unfortunately many people have because they haven’t known any better. The problem is, not knowing isn’t an excuse anymore.
It is disturbing how many people are unaware that downloading and sharing music files on these programs is illegal, and even more bothersome is how many people just don’t care. When you download copyrighted music on these programs without the consent of the copyright holders you are stealing; you might as well go into target, stick multiple CD’s into your jacket and walk out. We all know that is totally unacceptable behavior, so why is it being tolerated and accepted by people all over the world? Just because the stealing is happening through a computer screen doesn’t mean it’s not a felony. You are still committing the same crime and there are still serious consequences for these actions. I was curious if LimeWire, Kazaa, or Morpheus had any intention of lying to their customers to make it seem like sharing illegal files through their program is okay. I figured, so many people download these programs each day, that how could they continue to do so if they really knew the repercussions of their actions? But then, in fine print, at the bottom of the page I saw: “Using Morpheus™ or Morpheus Ultra™ for the uploading or downloading of copyrighted works without the permission or authorization of the copyright holders may be illegal and could subject you (or the ISP subscriber) to civil and/or criminal liability and penalties. For more information about U.S. copyright law, please visit http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/and http://www.copyright.gov/title17.” These programs warn you that sharing music is illegal, but do they really care if you do it or not? As long as they can make their actual application legal by writing a warning on the bottom of their website, they are off the hook. The creators of these programs aren’t going to get sued for allowing illegal file sharing to go on, you are. Now, I don’t mean to sound naïve but if people aren’t sharing music on these programs what else are they doing? I’m not saying that all of these programs are illegal because they are not. And if you want to use them to maybe share an ebook with distribution rights, be my guest. But let’s get real here. People are downloading hundreds of illegal tunes on a daily basis, and even though they may not have been caught yet, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is constantly watching and waiting to catch another violator of these programs. The RIAA has even stated that under copyright law, violators could be held liable for up to $150,000 per violation. Now just because downloading music from these programs is illegal, doesn’t mean you can’t find free and legal music in other places. Just visit MpFree.com and join thousands of members who have learned it is possible to download free music without breaking the law. Over the last seven days, MPFree users have been feverishly downloading all their favorite songs absolutly free!

Limewire is a legal program that seems too good to be true, and well, that’s because it is. Although the program is technically legal, sharing music files is not. So http://www.mpfree.com/ has come up with the perfect solution to give you the free and legal music you have all been waiting for. It’s as easy as becoming a member and visiting our site. Once you are a member, you can click on links to exciting offers and discounts from some of the best online companies. Unsure of what you want to download? Mpfree.com also offers an Artist Profiles page where you can skim through many artists and find out more information on any singer or group of your choice. You will be able to view the artist of the month, as well as a music video from that artist. Check back with me often for new posts, and interesting reports about Mpfree.com. Look forward to hearing from you! -Lauren Downloading music can be easy; finding the legal music sites is the hard part. There are several things to keep in mind when looking for music online. First, one has to make sure that the site is legal, and that the music files being downloaded are not being shared by an illegal source. There are many music sites on the internet that offer cheap or free music downloads. It will come in handy to get the legal songs not only for peace of mind, but also for better quality.
When illegal music is downloaded, it is done so without the permission of the music artist. Finding and tracking down people with illegal music is getting a lot stricter. Depending on how many songs the user has, will determine how much trouble they get into. This is being done so that music artist can still make money, and so that legal music downloading sites can get their credit back for having high quality music. One way to know if someone is downloading illegal music is to look at where the songs are coming from. For example, some songs are recorded right off of the radio, and when the file is downloaded, there will be radio DJs or something else in the track. Many people wonder why there are such big problems with illegal music downloads. The problem is that the music artist is missing out on a lot of money, and the user is missing out on a lot of good quality music. It is hard for someone to resist the temptations of free music, but they do not realize that there is better music quality out there. There are in fact, millions of music sites that offer free legal music. There are even plenty of music sites that have music for free. It is a matter of knowing which ones are legal or not. Typically, the peer to peer music sites are the illegal ones, or close to it. Basically, anything with file sharing is or will soon be illegal. Keep in mind, that there are some download sites that offer file sharing, but this is for listening purposes only. The program does not let the user download music onto their computer. Finally, finding the free music sites can be easy with a little bit of effort and research. Anyone that likes to listen to music and discover new music artists are encouraged to look for these music sites. It is fun and exciting to listen and download free music, and to get songs from up and coming music artists. Most people will choose not to like the music artist Arctic Monkeys, based solely on the fact that most people automatically place them among the stereotypical Euro Rock music genre. Their debut music album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, sold 360,000 copies its first week in England. The first of their music hits was a hit in downloadable music, and got the buzz going throughout Western Europe. With the release of that single on downloading music sites, the music album became their country's fastest-selling debut CD, making them one of the most liked British bands of all time. Music experts and fans alike took to their liking, and quickly made the music artist more than Europe could handle. This led them over to the United States, but they didn’t fair well with most people over here.
Because they not only looked like “that” type of British Band, but seemingly sounded like them too, it was easy for music fans in the States to want to dismiss the music band. The music band quickly changed the minds of many hearts, at least the ones that love loud, fast, witty rock songs. And while their second music album, Favorite Worst Nightmare, may not be as revelatory as the first set of music hits, it remains at the top among the music hits, and suggests they may eventually live up to the most heartfelt praises. Despite the music hits, and the rocking out, the band still has some work to do to get to the core of every person’s music hits list. Despite ranking high on numerous 2006 best-of lists, Whatever's introductory sales haven't even matched that first week in England. But they are warming up to music fans. Nightmare's lead music download single, ''Brainstorm'' seems to be a sort of tribute to a ladies' man. While many people say that it may not be the best as far as American style and lyrics go, it demonstrates a musical thrill ride that seems engineered for the famous dance clubbing scene, with its high-speed, fuzzed-out bass line, explosive heavy-metal opening, and spectacular false ending. Just when you think it’s over, the song jumps right back into the same tune, almost without missing a beat. Many people have no doubt that they will become like their predecessors, The Strokes, and other popular Brit Rock music bands, but they will not be there for quite some time. They still do not have the right music hits and beats to distinguish them from the others, and instead are being the echoes. Until one listens to their lyrics, however, then their music hits stand out. Their songs have verses that can stand among the top rhyming music artists. One of their genius lyrics include ''Now the shaggers perform and the daggers are drawn,'' heard in the song ''Balaclava.'' This does not mean they are put into the rap music genre, by any means. But they can rock the lyrics as well as any other to create beautiful melodies. Nightmare is less culturally specific, which might not make enough of a stand as most would like. But on the best tracks, when Turner dreams of a distant lover (''...lying on your side, with your hands between your thighs'') or an unhappily reformed party girl (''You used to get it in your fishnets/Now you only get it in your nightdress''), it feels more intimate, which more people like. Some people do not need a crystal ball to predict the outcome of the online music industry. While it is somewhat premature, some experts are even preparing the death notices of a popular music download, as we speak: the MP3. At various times in the past, experts that research this type of activity have predicted the downfall, or the overtaking of various newspapers, magazines, TV, the U.S. political system and America Online--all enterprises that were apparently healthy. The internet has been ever changing and it is to no fault of these powers that they have fallen short of the constantly changing internet technology surges.
It seems the MP3 is being taken over, but not quite yet. In fact, it is still on the rise, and the foreseeable future could predict against a downfall coming any time soon. Never mind what the abbreviation stands for; MP3 refers to a technology that allows someone to squeeze CD-quality music down to less than a tenth of its digital size, while retaining virtually all of its lovely sound. That makes it small enough to send to anyone music online--which is exactly what's happening. Many of these online MP3 music sites are transferring millions of songs per second, through various servers. Countless search engines host millions of people through the music sites, which allow people to share music, and download music online through different users. These music sites are devoted to finding the vast archives of MP3 music that exist online. A lot of the music, from the Beatles to Beethoven, is on underground "pirate" sites, which specialize in the illegal practice of giving away copyrighted music. The recording industry employs an army whose job it is to root out pirate sites. This proves to be tough work since some of these music sites spring up for only days or hours at a time. (Note: while it's technically illegal to download copyrighted music, this prohibition is no easier to enforce than the one against videotaping baseball games.) As popular as it is now, the MP3 craze is only going to get more popular. In recent times, many music sites are making it possible to get music loaded directly onto a music device, so that the illegality is not able to be caught, unless right at the moment the music is being downloaded. In fact, more and more MP3 players are able to be in sync with certain downloading sites to make it more possible to get music hits from the internet without having to pay. Many people believe that far from being the music industry's undoing, MP3 will be an advantage. The recording music industry has always made a profit by giving away product for free, using radio as the obvious example. He said lots of savvy music bands are already using the technology to put free music samples online legally. The gambit especially works for folks trying to break into the music biz who are eager to get radio airtime. In fact, a new music bands released a few MP3 songs online in hopes of being discovered. |
