On a cold, rainy night in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, an Amish man named Jacob Stoltzfus drives his horse and buggy along a two-lane road when a car-full of kids viciously rams the buggy. When he stops to inspect the damage, a man in a pickup truck pulls over and demands Jacob give him the bag he is carrying. When the bandana obscuring the intruder's face slips off, the thief shoots and kills Jacob. Pennsylvania State Trooper John Lapp, who left the Amish faith fifteen years earlier, is called to the crime scene. He grew up with Jacob and was once in love with the victim's widow, Sallie. The Amish, a religious sect that shuns modern life, do not see revenge and will not assist in finding Jacob's killer. That is, until Jacob's slightly retarded brother, Amos, is charged with the murder. While Lapp struggles with the disappointments in his own life, his investigation puts him in constant contact with Sallie. He finds himself frequently wondering if he could return to farming and accept the restraints of Amish life or if Sallie would even have him. In his search for the real killer, Lapp sets up a chain of events that reveal the shocking truth behind Jacob's murder.

Public education is a nightmare! Incompetence and mediocrity haunt public middle schools, junior high schools, and high schools. Teachers waste valuable classroom instructional time every day, and their teaching methods are grossly ineffective. Knowledge of subject matter is alarmingly inadequate. Parents don’t really know what happens in public school classrooms. They have been hoodwinked by educators to believe that their children are receiving a good education, but they aren’t as substantiated by international assessments. The Nightmare That Is Public Education educates parents and the public at large about the tragic realities of public schools, challenges both teachers and administrators to improve their teaching and administrative practices and strategies, and boldly offers innovative and controversial solutions to the problems which continue to plague public schools.

It is estimated that 4-8 million people in the United States suffer with Fibromyalgia. Another one million also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some statistics state that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia may directly affect 5% of the world's population. I am one of the individuals in this growing epidemic. In 1997, after a chaotic year of intense medical and psychological testing, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. I spent much of the last ten years in deep denial feeling alone, confused, frustrated, and angry. It has taken me a great deal of soul searching, but I believe that today I am a better, more centered person because of my experiences. I've never been someone who dictates advice, so my book provides worksheets you can develop to tailor your personal responses to symptoms and crises. It is the good, the bad, and the ugly of my personal journey that I share with you, my fellow Fibromites. My hope is simple, that you will find solace and renewed hope in my words.

In "Shadow Living...Paintings of Grief," the author shares an intimate story of survival during the first year after husband s death. The reader is weaved into a personal world of anguish, torment, and loneliness as the author languishes through endless days and nights of grieving the loss of her husband to the silent killer, primary amyloidosis. With brilliance and candor, the author chronicles the stages of the grieving process and skillfully walks the reader through personal episodes of pain, depression, and unnerving despair. Grief is personalized as a disturbing entity that disrupted the Slappey family life forever. With God as her refuge and strength, the author emerges from the shadows of grief to live again and to become a beacon of inspiration to others, coupled with an unwavering commitment to help others find their passageway through the murky depths of grief to a place of healing and peace.

"Twin Voices" by Janice Flood Nichols, provides a unique and timely glimpse into polio, a virus that killed and maimed millions of children and adults during the twentieth century. In 1953, polio struck DeWitt, NY (an eastern suburb of Syracuse) with a vengeance. In a first grade class of twenty-four students, eight children contracted the disease – one child, Frank Flood Jr., died sixty-one hours after admission to City Hospital; another first grader and her older sister died several years later of complications. Frankie’s twin sister, Janice, was admitted to the hospital on the evening of his burial. Diagnosed with paralytic polio, Janice recovered. She participated in the 1954 Salk vaccine trial, as one of nearly two million “Polio Pioneers.” Today, she remains dedicated to the goal of worldwide polio eradication. Twin Voices tells the story of polio, the disease, and the story of one family’s bout with the killer, in multiple “voices.”

David W. Powell enlisted for a tour of duty in April 1966 with the US Marines after receiving an imminent draft notice. Believing he would be able to leverage his existing skills as a computer programmer, he never thought all they would see on his resume was his Karate expertise. Even less that he would wind up serving as a Rocket man in the jungles of Da Nang and Chu Lai for a 13 month tour in hell. In 1989, David eventually recovered through a simple but powerful technique known as Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and is now symptom-free. Not just for veterans, TIR has since been successfully applied to crime and motor vehicle accident victims, domestic violence survivors, and even children. His story shows what is possible for anyone who has suffered traumatic stress and that hope, healing, and recovery can be theirs too.

"Gifts From the Child Within" brings a refreshing approach to guiding its reader to understanding the initial or underlying basis to their emotional suffering due to past childhood trauma. This recovery book is geared toward both professional and layperson. Its pages are filled with offerings from psychological, physiological, and spiritual perspectives which takes the reader on a journey into the soul. It is written with sensitivity and clarity inviting the reader to search within for healing. As the author shares her own journey of childhood abuse, the reader is asked to address issues surrounding physical, mental, spiritual, and sexual abuse. Instructions are captured to guide one toward reaching for their own child within; releasing negative emotions; re-creating outdated childhood beliefs; and, to recognize the gifts the inner child has for us. The process of Re-Creation Therapy(tm) is introduced by the author allowing the reader who follows its guidance to reap the effects of gradual changes in self-awareness which lead to a greater understanding of the psychodynamics the child within plays in the adult life. Included are a series of healing visualizations and autohypnosis suggestions; blank journal pages; and sample affirmations following each chapter.
McLaren's book is the result of thirty years of research in the philosophy of science. In addition it takes each of the major theories in psychiatry and demonstrates conclusively that it is so flawed as to be beyond salvation. It goes farther, in that the author outlines a model of mental function which both satisfies the essential requirements of any scientific model, and shows how the phenomena of mental disorder can be described in a parsimonious dualist model which leads directly to a humanist form of management of the most widespread form of disability in the world today.

"I was by her hospital bed when the surgeon gave his prognosis of 'about a year.' Mother turned to me. Looking directly into my eyes, she reached gently for my hand, and said, with such simplicity, 'Judith, I'm going to need your help.'" So begins the remarkable journey of two women. Judith Ashley had long ago emigrated from England to the United States. Her mother, Enid, still lived in Great Britain and was now dying of cancer of the bowel and liver. Separated by distance for virtually thirty years, Judith traveled back to England to fulfill a promise made two decades earlier - to be the primary caregiver throughout her mother's last weeks of life. In more than fifty letters written to her husband living six thousand miles away, Ashley recounts - with love and unflinching candor - the conscious way in which her mother approached the last year of her life with dignity, intimacy, and grace. The letters also show how Ashley navigated her way through her own chattering thoughts and roller-coaster emotions to help her have access to an inner source of strength and keep her promise. A moving testament to the strong bond between mother and daughter," Into the Silence" beautifully captures one family's enduring spirit.

The death of parents from AIDS leaves behind little children, often four or five of them, who desperately want to stay together as a family. In the literature, they call them Child Headed Households. Imagine watching your mother and father slowly die before your eyes, leaving you to bury them and then to raise and care for your younger brothers and sisters. " AIDS Orphans Rising" takes you through the daily lives of these children. What do they eat? Where do they live? How do they survive? What can I do to help? Each chapter provides weblinks to organizations working with these children as well as real solutions, actions that you can take now to help these children not only survive, but succeed. By 2010, there will be 25,000,000 AIDS orphans! Left alone, they will be uneducated, disenfranchised, and unwanted: ripe candidates for radicalization and exploitation by dictators and terrorists. If good people like yourself do not reach out to these children so they can get love, an education and set up in some profitable enterprise, civilization will deteriorate to a point that you will not even recognize it. This book is an inspiring gem of human caring for human. Particularly, the last chapter is beautiful and inspiring. It is very clearly written, and for the ordinary reader, and yet it is a fully documented scholarly work.

Dodie Cross was a newlywed American expat who faced far more than a language barrier in her new home. Among the challenges of her move to Thailand: the subtleties of the Eastern Squat Toilet, a near-fatal accident on the Sukhumvit Highway and bladder surgery performed by an inscrutable Thai doctor who decided to restore her virginity. All of these mishaps and more are described with great insight and wit in her new book, "A Broad Abroad In Thailand: An Expat's Misadventures in the Land of Smiles." In the end, it's her unflagging sense of humor that sees Cross through all obstacles: from the first pitfalls and pratfalls in her new land, through times of seemingly insurmountable problems.

An imaginative fantasy adventure, The Call to Shakabaz sidesteps many of the usual conventions of the genre and offers instead unusual and original resolutions to a variety of sticky situations. When the recently orphaned Goodacre children are transported to the land of Faracadar, they must discover and develop their special gifts and talents, which require that they exercise ingenuity, creativity, and compassion. Fourteen-year-old Doshmisi and her younger siblings Denzel, Maia, and Sonjay are given the task of retrieving the powerful Staff of Shakabaz from the evil enchanter Sissrath. They travel through a colorful landscape with their Faracadaran guide, fifteen-year-old Jasper, and their Aunt Alice s clever, pesky, and often hilarious parrot, Bayard Rustin. The adventurers must contend with many obstacles and foes, including a giant sea serpent spewing green goo, skeeter birds with uncanny eyesight, the smelliest man in the land (named Compost), the deadly mountain geebachings (who cause their victims to laugh themselves to death), as well as Sissrath himself and his minions (who shoot deadly poison darts at their enemies). Assistance is provided to them along the way by the High Chief and his clever daughter, talking whales, ancient trees, drummers, inventors, butterflies, wolves, tigers, and the peculiar sprites who live underground in the hills. Author Amy Wachspress has set the story in an African American cultural context, with all brown characters, for a refreshingly different perspective on adventuring in make-believe lands (there are almost no books in this genre with any African American characters in them). "The Call to Shakabaz" explores a host of difficult and complex issues that today s young people face and challenges readers to reconsider the nature of violence and our relation to it. In the final climactic sequence, young readers learn the fundamental principles of nonviolence as practiced by Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi. When the last page turns and the dust clears, this book will inspire readers to think and think again.

Set in 1980, in Central New Jersey, "The Sex Ed Chronicle" recounts a young journalist’s brave efforts to stand up for a teacher’s beliefs in the emotionally charged arenas of sex education and student free press rights in the public schools. In January of 1980, the U.S. economy is in shambles, Ronald Reagan is beginning his quest to become the country’s fortieth president, and New Jersey is about to become the first state to require sex education in all public schools. New Jersey native Greg Mandell, a rookie reporter for the Ocean Republic, accepts an assignment to cover the Parent’s Alliance for Schools and Teachers (PAST) and the state’s public hearings on sex education. Formed to stop sex education, PAST has influenced the election of three hundred like-minded candidates to school boards across the Garden State . While on assignment, Mandell falls for Andi Gilardi, a popular history teacher up for tenure at Mandell’s alma mater, Averdell High School . PAST has accused Gilardi of manipulating her students to fight for sex education through the school newspaper and has labeled her a “morally unacceptable” teacher who must be denied tenure. Mandell’s respect and affection for Gilardi forces him to make a choice between his professional objectivity and his personal integrity.

What do abusers see when they look at a victim walking across the street that tells them they can abuse the individual? Why do people commit suicide? Why do people have road rage? What does childhood abuse look like in adulthood? How does a PTSD victim describe what is going on inside of them? What is the human element that would turn a trauma into a life experience? My name is Lady and I have been diagnosed PTSD. I had a flashback in 2003 of a violent military rape that I had suppressed for over 40 years. I was also sexually abused as a child. Counseling for over 40 years, I never dreamed I would have to walk the same path I led my clients on. If I could have had something in my hand to act as a lifeline, it would have gone a long way toward giving me hope. My strength, my therapist and my friends were what helped me to go back to the original pain and connect the dots in my life to the present. To have a lifeline for others is the reason I wrote about the pain of my dysfunctional life. "My Journey to Peace with PTSD" describes how anger quietly sets in at any age and creates a trauma victim who becomes a candidate for PTSD; road rage; failed and successful suicides; how and why some people become abuse victims and why others become abusers; and more. As a PTSD victim, the one element that affected me the most was the feeling of isolation, which can be as terrifying as the trauma. The Foreword to the book is written by Ruth Crawford, LCSW, VAMC, with additional praises from other health care professionals.

It is also the story of a man's redemption from his past misdoings, and how he finds happiness with someone that is more than a match for him. The book is also a philosophical reflection on the impact that medical errors make in the medical field--something that we all need to think long and hard on. Most of conventional change management programmes fail. One of the reasons is that these conventional approaches are mainly focused on changes in processes and systems, with the assumption that these will lead to change in people s behaviors. However, this assumption is wrong: people often continue to do things like before or, after an initial peak of so-called adoption , initiatives fade. The author states that there is no lasting change unless it is true behavioral change and this is hardly a by-product of new processes . In other words, it is not until people in organizations change behaviors that we can claim that actual change has occurred.

Like the mockingbird, poet Stephen B. Wiley tells of what he has learned in a full and generous life. His "repertoire" is wide and varied - inspired by the places and people he has loved, the small pleasures of nature, the joys and sorrows that visit us all and the stories of those he has met along the way in a life that has spanned more than three-quarters of a century. As he did in Hero Island, his first acclaimed collection of poems, Wiley shows us the world we live in and the simple acts of living with a fresh and observant eye. Come with him to watch the circles that ripple on Foote's Pond or gaze in awe at the cherry tree, as magnificent as a Botticelli, when it comes into full bloom. Or share his bemusement as he contemplates the design and functioning of his elbows.

On November 23, 1993, Native American prophecy was fulfilled when a delegation representing the North American indigenous peoples addressed a gathering at the United Nations. As Spirit had directed, the Native American leaders delivered the prophecies of their spiritual leaders, warning that a long-predicted time of purification was already under way. The tribal leaders urged that we heed The Creator's original instructions to the indigenous peoples and voluntarily return to a more simple, respectful, and harmonious way of living. They warned that should we choose to ignore this message, erratic weather patterns, earth movements, starvation, violence, and war would occur with ever increasing frequency and intensity. When you read the morning paper of watch the evening news, you are witnessing the unfolding of those predicted events. Hollow Bones takes place in a not-too-distant future when the purifying changes predicted by Native American spiritual leaders are well under way. Matthew’s life has unraveled since the death of his wife. Now, with Hope and her young daughter, Lily, he embarks on a journey in search of a new beginning. Along the road, the travelers encounter the harsh realities of a failing culture and the sheltering kindness of strangers whose vivid dreams mark a shared lifetime with Chief Joseph and a two hundred-year-old oath they made to return and fulfill Native prophecies.

Award-winning author Frank McGee has compiled this remarkable story of “A Song for the World” from hundreds of letters, documents and scores of interviews. This is the story of the Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen, musical diplomats to the world. The book details the careers of these men, which spans a period of over fifty years. As entertainers, and song writers they demonstrated courage, commitment and vision leaving behind the comforts of home, promising careers, and budding romances to introduce a new concept for changing the world through the power of music. They touched the lives of millions of people, worldwide, with their songs. Their songs are written in dozens of languages and dialects. The format of the book is eye-catching in design with hundred of photos, giving detailed descriptions of the location, the events or persons. The text includes important side bars for emphasis of important details. Each chapter contains a song, poem or composition written by one of the men. I personally enjoyed the “The Amazing Music History Quiz” at the end of the book which highlights some of the early audacious adventures of the Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen. I also appreciated the complete index and bibliography included. Working with “Up with the People” the team traveled six continents. They faced the dusty roads of India, the revolution in the Congo, the strife in Ireland, and the closed door of China. They presented a message of hope and peace. The “Up with the People” team produced the half-time show for four Super Bowls, viewed by over 90,000 million people on television. “Up with the People” worked with 20,000 cast members from over 60 countries over a period of forty years. They performed in Munich, Madrid, Watts, Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Moscow, Beijing, and numerous other important locations and national and international events. Direct quotes from Herb Allen, Paul, Ralph, and Steve Colwell reveal the depth of their dedication, and sacrifice to the cause of peace. The book is a tribute to these four men and the cause for which they dedicated their lives. Frank McGee’s writing is crisp and descriptive. The book has a natural flow which includes historical events, musical diplomacy, and examples of organizational leadership. McGee’s writing is informative, interesting, and compelling. “A Song for the World” is a book for anyone who wants to impact change in today’s world.
