Before matriculating at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, her Marblehead HS accomplishments included three-time All-State cross country performances, a first-place All-State finish in the mile, and a two-mile win whose record still stands; her 4:46 mile won the Indoor National Scholastic Championships. When attending UNC, she won national cross country titles in 2002 and 2003--the first individual champion in the sport in Tar Heel history--and numerous track accolades, with best times of 4:11.24 in 1500m (7th in the US at any level in 2003,) 9:00.22 in the 3000m, and 15:20.54 in the 5000m.

That description matches the one provided to a reporter by James Keelen, a 29-year-old Easton, Pa., resident who was landscaping at an uncle's home across from the bank during the incident.
Mike and the Mad Dog
WFAN, the New York radio station that has broadcast the show for 18 years, announced that Chris "Mad Dog" Russo is leaving the station and Mike Francesa will host the afternoon show himself. Neil Best of Newsday, who has been way ahead of the pack on this story and reported in June that a split was near, writes that Russo is expected to land at Sirius Satellite Radio. Russo and Francesa didn't always see eye to eye, but it's hard to envision either of them ever doing anything as influential as Mike and the Mad Dog.

Funny or Die has become a valuable comedic resource in the last several years. Will Ferrell used Funny or Die for his famous "Landlord" viral comedy bits, Judd Apatow often uses Funny or Die for promotional comedy sketches for his movies, and other comedy fans and comedians have used Funny or Die for various reasons. But not many people would expect Paris Hilton to find a use for the Funny or Die website. That is, until John McCain's now famous ad linking Barack Obama's type of celebrity to Paris Hilton came out, casing Paris Hilton to fight back using the Funny or Die site. The Paris Hilton commercial on Funny or Die begins by turning McCain's ad around in asking if McCain is "ready to lead" calling McCain "like, super old." The usual "McCain is super old" jokes link him to Larry King, Yoda, Colonial Sanders and other old figures before Paris Hilton herself comes on.
The conservative coffee place in Crown Point, Ind. The underlying supposition that coffee houses are inherently liberal hangouts brought to mind a story told by Warren Hinckle, the San Francisco author and provocateur.Hinckle edited Ramparts, a legendary 1960s leftist magazine, but continued to hang out at what he called "right-wing bars," and once brought Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver with him to one of his favorite San Francisco establishments.
The tuatara is an amniote of the family Sphenodontidae, endemic to New Zealand. The two species of tuatara are the only surviving members of the Sphenodontians which flourished around 200 million years ago,and are in the genus Sphenodon. Tuatara resemble lizards, but are equally related to lizards and snakes, both of which are classified as Squamata, the closest living relatives of tuatara. For this reason, tuatara are of great interest in the study of the evolution of lizards and snakes, and for the reconstruction of the appearance and habits of the earliest diapsids (the group that additionally includes birds and crocodiles).

Tuatara are greenish brown, and measure up to 80 cm (32 in) from head to tail-tip with a spiny crest along the back, especially pronounced in males. Their dentition, in which two rows of teeth in the upper jaw overlap one row on the lower jaw, is unique among living species. They are further unusual in having a pronounced parietal eye, dubbed the "third eye", whose current function is a subject of ongoing research. They are able to hear although no external ear is present, and have a number of unique features in their skeleton, some of them apparently evolutionarily retained from fish. Although tuatara are sometimes called "living fossils", recent taxonomic and molecular work has shown that they have changed significantly since the Mesozoic era.

The tuatara has been classified as an endangered species since 1895 (the second species, S. guntheri, was not recognised until 1989). Tuatara, like many of New Zealand's native animals, are threatened by habitat loss and the introduced Polynesian Rat (Rattus exulans). They were extinct on the mainland, with the remaining populations confined to 32 offshore islands, until the first mainland release into the heavily fenced and monitored Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in 2005. The name "tuatara" derives from the Māori language, and means "peaks on the back".As with many other Māori loanwords, the plural form is now generally the same as the singular in formal New Zealand English usage. "Tuataras" remains common in less formal speech, particularly among older speakers.
Sixteen policemen were killed by unidentified assailants in Kashgar, in the predominantly Muslim Xinjiang region of China. Another Sixteen officers were wounded in the attack, in which two attackers drove a lorry into the station. The government of the People's Republic of China has repeatedly warned of unrest leading up to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Xinhua News Agency reports that the attackers drove a dump truck into the police officers during the officers' morning exercise at about 8:00 am local time (0:00 GMT), then threw grenades into the police barracks and attacked with knives. The BBC reports that fourteen of the police deaths occurred at the scene, with two more dying en route to hospital. They also report one of the alleged attackers received a leg injury. The attackers were arrested, according to police.

The autonomous Xinjiang region of China is a large, sparsely-populated territory in the north-west of the country. The population includes many groups, but the largest is the Turkic peoples including the largely Muslim Uyghurs. Kashgar is an oasis city at an important junction of trade routes, near China's western borders, and was a part of the historic "Silk Road."
At least seven mountaineers have died while climbing K2, the second highest mountain in the world. The accident was reportedly caused by a rock slide or an avalanche that severed all the ropes used for ascent and descent.

Initial reports state that seventeen climbers ascended the mountain in two groups, with both reaching the summit successfully. The reports also state that after the avalanche, some climbers attempted to return without ropes. The summit was covered in clouds late yesterday afternoon and the conditions in the mountain continued to deteriorate. Some of the latest reports indicate that eight climbers were stuck at the summit, unable to descend. Four of these climbers are Norwegian nationals. The conditions at the summit during night are extreme and offer very limited chances for survival for people unable to descend.

In an unrelated incident, a Serbian climber and his sherpa fell down during the initial descent. This incident was, however, unrelated to the the other deaths caused by the avalanche.
The United Nations Security Council has extended its mandate for the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force in the Darfur area of Sudan. The resolution, adopted to extend the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) mission, was approved by 14 of the 15 Security Council members. The United States abstained from the vote, saying that the language used in the mandate undermined efforts to bring Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to justice for war crimes.

The vote comes a day after the UN responded to a report by the Save Darfur Coalition that said the Darfur peacekeeping force lacks enough personnel and essential equipment. The UNAMID force currently has only 9,500 troops deployed out of an assigned 26,000, which it blames on Security Council bickering and the demands of Sudan's government.

Tropical Storm Edouard gained speed as it moved west Monday and was expected to strengthen to a near-hurricane before making landfall somewhere in Texas or southwest Louisiana. A tropical storm warning was in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River westward to San Luis Pass in Texas. A hurricane watch was in effect from west of Intracoastal City, La. to Port O'Connor, Texas.

Edouard had maximum sustained winds near 50 mph with higher gusts at 8 a.m. EDT Monday. The storm's center was located about 80 miles south-southwest of Grand Isle, La., and 285 miles east-southeast of Galveston, Texas.

It was moving west near 8 mph and was expected to strengthen before making landfall Tuesday morning. Southeastern Texans prepared for Edouard's impact while people farther down the Texas coast continued cleaning up the damage from Hurricane Dolly, which hit last month.

SpaceX's Falcon 1 third attempt to launch a payload rocket into outer space failed this weekend, with launch control confirming an "anomaly" just five minutes after liftoff.

Elon Musk, SpaceX chairman and CEO, did admit that it was "obviously a big disappointment not to reach orbit on this Flight 3 of the Falcon 1," but he has assured the world that his firm won't be wasting any time feeling sorry for itself.

The Falcon 1 was carrying a minuscule satellite dubbed Trailblazer for the Pentagon's Operationally Responsive Space Office, though we've no idea how costly the loss was. Thankfully, we can all look forward to SpaceX trying again sometime in the future, but unless the tables turn in a hurry, we'd say the odds are still stacked against it.
