Venus JXD300 – Games, Music and Movies

venus1

No-name game machines are not usually the most exciting things but the Chinese Venus JXD300’s PSP-stylings, GBA & NES compatibility and impressive video capabilities make it a little more noteworthy.

The JXD300 has a 3-inch screen and supports RMVB, RM, AVI, VOB, DAT, MPG and FLV at resolutions up to 1280 x 720.

Also onboard is a TV-OUT, a 2 megapixel camera, FM radio, digital recording (4G – up to 200 hours), MP3, WMA, APE, FLAC and more audio supported, e-book reader and a customisable interface among much more.

There’s no price information but with this piece of kit you could flick between a NES emulation of Super Mario and the Mario movie with ease. Ok, maybe the PSP GO’s just got the edge on this one…

Nationite NaNite N1 MP3 First Look Video Review

Well we’ve been hinting at our new NaNite line for a bit now, I got round to finally do a video review of the first addition to that line, the N1, much needed seeing how the player are already in production over at the factory.

The new NaNite N1 provides for a compact, durable and good quality mp3 device, capable of 40 hours of continuous audio playback with only having charged it for less than two hours.

The player has at its core a Sigmatel media processor, providing for quality audio sound, high battery efficiency and sorting of music by ID3 tag information.

The N1 is an ideal player to be conveniently carried around in your pocket, be it at work, at the gym or while your jogging, the one thing the NaNite N1 will never be called is inconvenient. The player will be quite affordable with the 2GB starting at $39.50, 4GB at $49.50 and the 8GB at $69.50 (with Alpha Brainwavz).

Look out for another one of our infamous presales for the NaNite N1 soon!

Sony “Zapp-In” New App To B-Series Walkman

sony1

Sony Japan have announced their latest in the long line of B-Series Walkmans, the NWZ-B142F. The latest addition to the series comes with their new ZAPPIN feature which allows you to select tracks while it plays five-second clips from the middle of each one.

As well as ZAPPIN, Sony’s 26-gram PMP comes with 2GB of onboard memory, a three-line monochrome LCD display and an FM radio with 30 presets, voice and radio recording, an equalizer, 18 hours of playback and a three-minute ‘quick charge’ that give you 90 minutes of jogging, commuting or just plain old sitting, depending on your lifestyle.

For anyone who’s used Sony PMPs before, the best thing about this player is the drag-and-drop over USB file transfer which does away with their infuriating SonicStage and Connect software.

8mm “Blade” Sunty T-600 Unboxed and Trialed

sandy

Imp3.net have got their hands on a Chinese Sunty T-600 PMP. The most striking thing about this player is the branding which features a ‘C’-shaped crescent moon over the ‘S’ which at first glance makes it look like a much ruder PMP than it is.

Sniggering aside, they don’t call it ‘Blade’ for nothing. At just 8mm deep the T-600’s a slim player with a 4.3-inch screen and it supports RM/RMVB, AVI, FLV video playback along with MP3, WMA, APE and FLAC audio. It also has a built-in mic for audio recording, TV-OUT, an eBook reader and TF card slot.

Cube H100 ‘HD’ Player Review - MKV and 1080I TV Out

We have heard a lot about Cube, till now we have only been able to read about their products, but last week we got our first shipment of Cube’s H100 media player. It too claims to be part of the new generation ‘HD’ media players, however unlike most of the pack, the H100 uses a totally different media processor, one that claims to be more powerful than the CC1600 and the RK2806 processors. Only the Ainol V6000HDV currently uses a similar media processor, but this particular processors seems to go by different names, Ainol call their chip the SoChip, Cube calls this same chip ‘AHD 1080′, most likely the company that really makes this chip, allows for their buyers to rename it in their own specific brand.

Although by name the Ainol V6000HDV and the Cube H100 may seem to have different processors, they are in fact the same, not only that, but the two are almost the same player, but differ in body design and the layout of the navigation buttons.

h100_8The Cube H100 is an attractive player, it has that enlarged chocolate bar feel to it, well weighted and doesn’t feel cheap. It has buttons on either side of it and also a joystick of sorts (which we assumed earlier to be a click wheel of sorts). It does have two dual speakers at the back, but they are not that loud. The curvaceous metallic body gives a good feel to the player, a better design than that of it V6000HDV counterpart.

h100_20

The player has a high resolution, 800 x 480 5.0″ LTPS screen, although when viewed directly the screen is amazing, it does not have the best viewing angles, this seems to be a growing trend in players these days, not just a specific issue with the H100, our reasoning is that manufacturers are using cheaper high resolution screens and these viewing angles are tell tale signs of lower cost screens. Well i guess if they are going to cut corners anywhere, let it be only in the viewing angles as the player is still quite functional otherwise.

h100_5

Along with the screen comes a standard 3.5mm audio port and a dedicated video out port for the higher quality TV out. The player does boast to have the best TV out quality of all current ‘HD’ players, capable of 1080I video out! We have not been able to verify this, but from what other China based reviewers have shown, this claim maybe quite true, either way, we do not doubt that we wouldn’t be impressed with the TV out. The biggest downside to this player is its MiniSD expansion slot, not conforming to the now almost industry standard of MicroSD, Cube has chosen to go with the more archaic form of memory card.

h100_10

The UI has a very PSP layout to it, although at times it seems to be quite complex, loaded with options, from energy saving options, to subtitle support to varied video zooming, it does seem to lack some basic stuff also. This is mostly noticable in the audio player, there isn’t even an option to listen to all your music, you can sort by artist, album or genre, but there isn’t the simple option to see all your audio files and play directly from that list - so if you just want to shuffle your way through all your music, this isn’t an option. Then again we do have to state we have not updated to the latest version of the firmware, this may have changed already.

The small joystick on the player does make navigating through the firmware much easier than the classical push button navigation that we have on the V6000HDV, but sometimes, as you do need to use the push buttons with the joystick, the navigation can seem a little odd, its certainly something that won’t take long getting used to, but it could also have been thought out better.

h100_12

The chip does support very high resolution videos, but the biggest deal is that it can support h264 MKV files, we have not put this player through the paces for MKV format, but sure enough it did playvery high resolution RMVB files with no issue. However, what we suspect is due to the old firmware, we were unable to get the same high resolution AVI files that worked on CC1600 players to work on this.

h100_17

Audio quality on the player is very good, however the lack of personal EQ option and the rather lack luster preset EQs, audio quality does feel a bit flat, its pretty clear that the makers were really putting all their eggs on the video playback performance of this player.

h100_2

The player also has all the other standard functions we would expect, from ebook reader, image viewer to even a radio. The player also comes with a wireless remote and carrying case.

Overall the player itself is very nice, it does have a good TV out ability, very good video playback, but the firmware still needs work, but luckly there are already firmware updates rolling for this player, i do expect whatever this chipset really is to deliver some impressive video playback. It does have have a better feel than other similar players and for what it can do along with its selling price, it will make for a good deal, especially those looking for a player with MKV ability.

The Cube H100 8GB will start retailing on MP4 Nation at $124.50.

Samsung YP-CP3 in Russia Now

samsung-yp-cp3

The big country in northern Asia is getting the Samsung YP-CP3 ahead of the rest of the world for converted price tag of $193 for the 8GB model, and, folks, there’s a 4GB version, too. This is not a touchscreen PMP, so the joystick must serve the users purpose. It’s a full-multimedia PMP with all the useful codecs and an FM tuner as well.

Samsung YP-CP3 is not only attractive looks, but also different ergonomics. Right from the big screen is silver panel with pyatipozitsionnym joystick and two buttons. This solution makes the management of player the most comfortable: the use of buttons and a joystick intuitively clear when the device is convenient to hold in your hand, no screen display.

Player YP-CP3 is available in black and white with memory 4 and 8 GB. He will go on sale in late June 2009 on the recommended price of 4 990 rubles 5 990 rubles, respectively.

The 24-hour music playback sounds good too, but only 4 hours of video from the battery.

(Via PMP Today.)

Samsung's upcoming YP-R1 uncovered, just barely worth the effortThere's nothing particularly offensive about this DAP, but we can't imagine it changing anyone's life -- and really, is that too much to ask out of a portable audio player? After catching wind of this upcoming YP-R1 from Samsung, the fine folks at DAP Review did a bit of sleuthing to pair up the specs with a photo, and it's all pretty traditional: 8GB of flash storage, a 2.7-inch 400 x 240 touchscreen display, a good amount of video and audio codecs, TV-out, Bluetooth, FM, e-book reader and even some games. Supposedly it'll be out in the UK on July 30th for £109.99 (about $181 US). Like we said, pretty standard stuff, but who knows, maybe Samsung will surprise us all with a new UI theme or something.

MSI MT-V886 HD PMP Unveiled

msi-mt-v886

After announcing a set of cheap PMPs, MSI decided to launch an HD PMP model. The MT-V886. The 4.3-inch screen only supports 480 x 272 pixels so you’ll have to plug this in on a larger screen through the built-in TV out to enjoy the 720p videos. No word on pricing and availability and we’re not sure that hole on the border of the MSI logo at the back is a camera. Supporting RM, RMVB, AVI, FLV videos, it also most likely supports various music files. With FM tuner and e-Book functionality.

Mintpass Has English Site for Mintpad

mintpass-mintpad-site

If having an English-language site means that the Korean manufacturer Mintpass will be selling some of its products to the U.S., Enlgand, Canada, Australia, etc. then by all means we must expect the U.S., Europe launch of the Mintpad soon. The Mintpass Mintpad is a would-be revolutionary 3-inch touchscreen PMP that serves as a note-taking and multimedia device. Though the 400MHz processor/ 128MB of RAM is good enough for the old iPhone, the 4GB storage may be a little lacking. Suggested price in Korean is just under $160 but it should be cheaper once it gets to foreign shores. Click the links below to know more.

Chuwi W3000 PMP reviewed: better MID than SmartQ managed

Chuwi’s W3000 still looks unlikely to arrive on US or European shelves any time soon, but that hasn’t dulled the enthusiasm of the guys over at MP4 Nation.  They’ve been putting the 4.1-inch touchscreen PMP through its paces, and finding that in contrast to the SmartQ 5, the W3000 actually does a good job both as a media player and as an internet device.

chuwi w3000 6 480x360

Chuwi have modified the standard Windows CE version of Internet Explorer, and it apparently renders sites far better than the normal build.  However there’s still no Flash support, which means video sites like YouTube and Hulu are no-go areas.  Instead, you’ll be looking to play FLV, RMVP, MP4 and AVI video on the PMP, and happily it’s all reportedly smooth and has a handy TV output for larger-screen entertainment.

Unfortunately, despite being Windows CE based the W3000 proved unhappy with the GAPI gaming/application API, which limits its software flexibility.  Still, out of the box there’s WiFi support, a microSD card slot, USB host port and a decent media player front-end.  It remains to be seen whether Chuwi develop a version of the W3000 for export - right now it only has a Chinese version of CE running - but if they do, expect it to come in at under $170 for the 8GB and under $140 for the 2GB model.

Archos 3 PMP Looks Like Teclast M26

archos_3_touchscreen

Just like the Archos 2 PMP, the Archos 3 looks like an OEM design and has a lot of unmistakable similarities with the Teclast M26. The Archos 3 has a 3-inch touchscreen and 8GB of storage, going for a very reasonable 100 euros or about $141. It has a relatively simple touchscreen UI compared to the Archos 5 and 7 and the Gen5 touchscreen PMPs called ‘virtual wheel.’ There’s an FM tuner, audio recorder, clock and FM tuner.

iRiver NV Classic PND-PMP Comes Out

iriver_nv_classic-pnd

The new user interface dubbed ‘Magazine’ by iRiver will have another hardware showcasing it. The iRiver NV Classic seems unperturbed by the new iPhone 3G S, which features a built-in compass and turn-by-turn navigation. Theoretically, an all-in-one computer like the iPhone can drive a device like the iRiver Classic out of business, but perhaps drivers will prefer the 7-inch (800 x 480) screen and a DMB TV tuner built-in (no idea if iRiver will support DVB-T in the U.S. and European territories).

The iRiver NV Classic is a great PMP supporting MPEG1/4, WMV9 and Xvid and MP3, WAV, OGG and WMA.  The $264 price tag includes a 4GB SD card and a mapping card.

Now according to the marketing release this aint no MID .. not sure why byut it seems they are toutoing the player as a streaming video device as it main focus with much emphasis being put on its ability to connect tt, download and play subscription based and RSS video feeds.

Its a Liunux based system so lets hope they do a better job that the much hyped but the big let down that was the SmartQ Q5.

8GB mobiBLU Cube 5 MP3 Player, the Smallest?

mobiblu-cube-5

When the new iPod Shuffle was announced, we all forget there’s one other MP3 player that might beat it on size without sacrificing necessary features such as navigable buttons and even a screen. Announced a year ago, the mobiBLU Cube 3, features an OLED screen and buttons in a package so tiny, the surface area is not much bigger than your thumbnail. But, alas, it only had 2GB of storage space and has a $99 price tag. In the new mobiBLU Cube 5, the maker made no ostensible changes from the Cube 3 but added a 4GB and 8GB option. Its also cheaper with the 4GB Cube 5 pegged at $55 here. It plays MP3 and WMA and lasts up to 8 hours of continuous playback. An FM tuner is included. The .8-inch OLED screen is quite helpful and we wouldn’t want mobiBLU to remove it ever in future Cube MP3 players.

Philips GoGear Opus: iPlayer-friendly, inexpensive PMP

GoGear-Opus.jpg
Philips has launched the wallet-friendly MP3 (et al) player known as the GoGear Opus. We saw a little something of the 8GB/16GB device - well Zara did - out in Lisbon and now we hear it allows you to pay downloaded BBC iPlayer content too. Nice touch. The news since then is that it'll cost £99 or £129 depending which model you go for and it supports MP3, WMA, AAC (non-DRM) and FLAC (hurray!) for audio and MPEG4, WMV and SMV on the video side. Fear not, though, AVI, MOV, RM, WMV and DVDs can be converted by the software included. Make sure you factor in the time for that. It measures 107mm x 11mm x 57mm and sports a 320 x 240-pixel, 2.8' LCD capable of 262,000 colours. Not exactly mind blowing stuff here certainly good for the money. You get the ever-reasonable free Philips headphones backed up by the ever-dividing FullSound upscaling technology with 30 hours of audio and 6 of video battery life to consider you point of view. There's some hook-you-in 30-day trials of Napster, if you wish, or you can go and get your music like a real (wo)man instead. All in all, a pretty good package from Philips. Perfect for downscaling those iPod Touch birthday present requests without the bad taste in the mouth.

Mobiblu A20Mobiblu has a new player on their site called the A20. Most of their players are rebrands nowadays so I'm sure this one is as well. It looks pretty bland, having a slew of button controls, and one giant mobiBLU logo under the screen. It has a 1.5' screen, support for MP3, WMA, and MP4, an FM tuner, and voice recorder.

In other words, it's just your typical run-of-the-mill player. In fact, I'd say it's even worse than that. If I'm reading correctly, the battery life on this appears to be just 6 hours. Truly abysmal.

Atree J2 Red Eye White Edition Makes Me Think

atree-j2-red-eye-white

PMPs are not just about being a fashion statement anymore. The days of the featureless iPod is over. What we have today is an iPod Touch that’s as useful as a netbook and an upcoming Zune HD that is simply light years apart compared to what most people are used to in a 3.3-inch screen. Atree may not be in the loop when it tried to spark interest with the J2 Red Eye. When it was officially unveiled, it disappointed us considerably for being just your typical PMP. The flashing red LED or whatever that thing does is, honestly, generations behind the times. Come on, Atree, we’re not that gullible anymore.

Atree J2 Red Eye White Edition features:

  • 2.4-inch QVGA LCD

  • MP3, WMA , WAV, OGG, APE, MPEG-4 SP, WMV9 SP, SMI, JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG, TXT, SWF

  • 4GB and 8GB available

  • starts at $92
