With Internet threats on the rise, it’s best to be safe than sorry

Firewall protects computers

Most of us think that an anti-virus program (install antivirus) is enough protection for our computers. But that’s far from sufficient. The most effective way to protect your computer is to install a firewall. A firewall is software (or in some cases hardware) that protects your computer or network from unauthorised outside intrusion. It acts like a barrier and stops unauthorised access. It monitors and scans all the information that comes through the Internet, and allows only those programs to access the Internet, which you have asked it to.

With malicious intrusions on the rise, anyone with access to the Net needs a firewall. Research has shown that a computer that doesn’t have a firewall installed can be compromised within a matter of minutes.

A firewall detects and stops any unauthorised programs from being installed on your computer. Some anti-virus programs may sometimes fail to detect Trojans or spyware, which a firewall can often stop. With the increase of malicious attacks, this kind of protection becomes absolutely imperative.

If you don’t have a firewall installed on your machine, don’t worry. Windows XP and

come with built-in firewalls that you just need to switch on. All you need to do is go to the Control Panel and click on the Windows Firewall icon and select the On radio button. If you do not have XP or
on your computer, there are free firewalls can be downloaded from the Net easily. Before you download, be sure to read credible reviews so you know what’s up ahead.

A firewall can be personalised to suit your needs. It is designed to be suspicious of all programs. If it senses a program wants to connect to the Net, a pop-up comes up to alert you. You can either answer Yes or No, depending on whether you want the program to connect to the Net or not.

Remember, if you are unfamiliar with the program, it’s safer to select "No." It’s best to spend some time exploring the firewall’s features and setting permissions for various programs. This ensures that alerts don’t pop up every now and then while you work on your computer.

For all your computer worry you can get along with computer support

Q.What does Outlook do that Outlook Express doesn’t do? Is there any reason to buy Outlook?

A. They may have similar names, but Outlook Express and Outlook vary widely in what you can do with them besides sending and receiving e-mail.

Outlook Express is a free e-mail program that came loaded on just about every Windows-based PC. Intended for home users with simple mail needs, Outlook Express has an address book and can also be used to read messages from Internet newsgroups. On Vista, the free e-mail program was renamed Windows Mail and given an instant search function and the ability to filter junk mail.

Outlook, or as the latest version is called, Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, costs about $110 and is also included in the Microsoft Office suite. It is designed for business users. It includes an integrated to-do list, contact and calendar features, as well as better search and security tools and the ability to send text messages to phones right from the program.

Q - I am thinking of buying a MacBook to replace my Windows laptop. Is there a way to move the Microsoft Outlook file (e-mails, contacts and calendars) between a PC and a Mac?

A Picking up your life in Outlook and moving it over to a Mac is certainly possible, and you can do it in a number of ways. One easy option is to use an inexpensive program such as Outlook2Mac  to do the heavy lifting between Outlook and mail programs on the Mac.

While there is no version of Outlook for the Macintosh, Microsoft does make a similar mail and personal-information management program for Mac OS X called Entourage that is part of the Office 2008 for Mac suite that also includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

You can find tips for converting and moving Outlook files at ww.entourage.mvps.org/cross(USCORE)platform/win(USCORE)mac.html. It will also explain how to export your Outlook mail into the Mac OS X Mail program that comes with new Macs — as well as how to pull in your contacts and calendars.

If you own a PC running Vista, when you first used it you probably looked around for Outlook Express, the e-mail client Microsoft has used for several years now. But instead, you only found the new Windows Mail.

But Outlook, as part of the Office suite of programs, is what most people use at work. They’re familiar with it, and Microsoft believes people will be willing to pay to have it at home. So, according to ZDNet, the company is releasing a standalone version of Outlook Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, for $149.95.

It makes for an interesting experiment, certainly, since many people have already bought Microsoft Office, which includes Outlook, at least in a version that’s ample for most personal use.

So far Microsoft is just looking at the US market; no date or price has been set for a European release of the software.

“The policy is to give the price in the US but not the UK; this pricing has not yet been fixed," a spokesperson told ZDNet.

Continuation of Part 5

If you want to backup Outlook Express by hand, you have to save registry keys and DBX files. Saving messages, signatures and the address book can be done within the email client, but for settings you have to search through Windows registry. It can be pretty difficult to do it for a beginner.

The best way to count those situations is to backup emails on a CD or another hard disk. People who know a little about Windows and computers can do it by hand. Outlook Express is still the most used email client.

Continuation of Part 3

Well, we all know how reliable Windows is. There is no person that can say he never saw a "blue screen". Because most of the email clients store email, account and settings data in My documents, Program files or in Windows registry. When you reinstall the operating system you loose them all. Even Microsoft CEO Bill Gates acknowledged that they counted 5 percent of total Windows based computers to crash twice every day. A small report can be found on the NY Times website.

Viruses are increasing their numbers day by day. It's hard to keep up even for the big players like Symantec or Kaspersky. They reduced the response time for a new virus, but if you are unlucky, the virus crashes your computer before you can apply the antivirus.

Hard Disk can fail from several reasons: logical problems like bad partitions, hardware problems caused by dropping them or something on them, or, sometimes they just stop functioning. You can use several data recovery tools like GetDataBack or Acronis, which might save your day. But you might not be able to get back any byte.

How often do people loose their email data?
Is this important to backup your email client before loosing important emails?
Are you thinking it won't happen to you?

Well, for those who use an email client and loosing their emails is one of the worst nightmares. Unfortunately this situation is quite probable.

There are several causes for this:
- Hard disk failure
- Viruses and Trojans
- Windows crashes
- Some time un-expected things
