The Sitemasher crew (Phil, Ron, and Nicole) attended the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WWPC) to discuss Sitemasher's recent entry into the Microsoft Startup Accelerator Program with Microsoft's Emerging Business Team.

Sitemasher was invited to join the Microsoft Startup Accelerator Program as a result of winning the Microsoft Blue Sky Innovation award. The program is designed to accelerate the success of high-potential software startups around the globe by providing access, guidance, and support for the Microsoft platform. Accelerator companies are selected to join the program based on their innovation, high growth potential, funding, platform decision, and strategic importance to Microsoft.

Microsoft is really excited to have Sitemasher within the portfolio of high-potential startups, according to Dave Drach, Managing Director of the Emerging Business Team at Microsoft.

Because Sitemasher's product portfolio is aligned with Microsoft strategy, there is ample opportunity for partnering, so after discussing business plans with Dave, the crew from Sitemasher moved on to talk to potential partners.

As Ron explained, “It's really invigorating to have Microsoft and partners get excited about Sitemasher's mission. It seems like everybody that builds, manages, or owns a website can relate to the problems we're trying to solve. Having that kind of response at an event like this is huge! The Microsoft team and partners were really enthusiastic.”
Sitemasher's "Web of Pain" addresses struggles with traditional website design and content management systems.

Sitemasher takes a novel approach in debunking the myth that building and managing websites has to be painful by spoofing traditional methods in its comic strip "Web of Pain," officially launched this week.

Meet Sam, Ned, Vinny and Zoe, four characters who are in constant conflict trying to get websites built, running, and updated … yesterday! ... replicating an all-too-common scenario that plays itself out in companies worldwide on a regular basis.

When he began formulating the idea for the Vancouver start-up company, Phil Calvin, chief technical officer, decided that implementing and owning a website shouldn't have to be so hard, and he set out to solve that dilemma with the Sitemasher product.

The comic strip is a way of addressing common frustrations website designers, developers, and owners experience as they spend days, weeks, months, and in some cases years building and maintaining websites. The characters of "Web of Pain" embody the day-to-day obstacles that occur when building and managing websites.

"Through our 'Web of Pain' characters, we try to convey the pain of all the individuals involved in the website lifecycle….from the website builder struggling to produce better websites faster and less expensively to website owners trying get the most of their IT investment," said Ron Moravek, chief executive officer.

Sitemasher will be updated with new comic strips biweekly with the intent of not only giving people a chuckle when they identify with the four stereotypical characters, but also driving potential customers to Sitemasher's website to try the pre-release version of Sitemasher or simply sign up to receive future comic strips.

Asked why Sitemasher went with a subtle marketing approach versus a more traditional style, Nicole Denil, vice president of Sales and Marketing commented, "We wanted to make solving website pain pertinent yet fun. Most people can relate to the pain around building or owning websites, so we wanted to make those pains come to life through our characters."

This subtle marketing method has caught on. Microsoft and IBM have taken similar approaches, with their focus less on technology and more on the people who use the products. "With the landscape changing on how people engage in technology, more decision-making power lies in the hands of the people who actually use the software," Denil said. "Not only does our cast of characters act in the strip, but they are now part of the Sitemasher crew … we consult with their personas even while we build our product."

The comic feed has different ways for the user to subscribe; via an RSS feed, a comic widget that is embeddable into multiple platforms such as MySpace, Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, iGoogle, LiveJournal, Tagged, Multiply, Freewebs, Netvibes or a widget available via Facebook's application directory.

Sitemasher is asking readers to submit real-life web pain stories that could be used for future episodes and they can win prizes.

To view or sign up to receive the "Web of Pain" comic, visit www.sitemasher.com/comic/ .

The comic strip launch closely follows Sitemasher being chosen by Microsoft for its Blue Sky Innovation , which recognizes leading innovation developed on a Microsoft-based platform. Sitemasher was elected from more than 100 submissions by independent software vendors (ISV) across the country, recognized for its unique SaaS-based delivery model, broad market appeal and its integrated web offering. ISVs were judged on the unique use of technology, the real-life challenge they are solving and the market potential.

Sitemasher was very well received in Beijing. As part of the trade mission headed by Premier Gordon Campbell, Sitemasher attended the Beijing Technology Summit which showcased leading Canadian technology companies from their respective industries.

Samson Mow, Sitemasher’s Strategic Alliance Manager presented to an audience of over 120 delegates from China’s high tech sector and government, along with BC government officials. Some of the companies and organizations we met with in Beijing included China Netcom, Baidu, Digital China, and the Internet Society of China. These meetings have led to further discussions which we hope to grow into cooperative endeavors in the near future.

Sitemasher was also present for the official opening of the BC Canada Pavilion which is now open until the end of the Beijing 2008 Olympics and serving to introduce the best of BC and Canada to an international audience.

Sitemasher would like to thank the BCTIA for organizing this event and the BC Ministry of Economic Development for spearheading this initiative.

Sitemasher’s skies became brilliant blue today when Microsoft announced it selected the Vancouver-based start-up company as one of three finalists for an independent software vendor (ISV) Innovation Award from a field of approximately 100 candidates. The winner will be announced at Microsoft’s ISV Leadership Summit on Thursday, June 5.

Microsoft Canada’s inaugural Blue Sky Award recognizes significant, exciting, cutting-edge solutions developed on a Microsoft-based platform. The award, open to ISVs yet to achieve Certified or Gold Certified Partners status, was designed to help recognize innovation by creating a forum for leading Canadian software developers to showcase their creativity, contribution, and technology advances.

Entrants were judged on the unique use of technology, the real-life challenge they are solving, and the market potential.

Microsoft will provide the recipient with a customized engagement plan to support software development, including software and business development resources, public awareness, and exposure to additional Microsoft-based resources both in Canada and Redmond.

In developing the award, Microsoft Canada is recognizing innovation by creating a forum for leading Canadian software developers to showcase their outstanding achievements.

When introducing the award program in March, a Microsoft Canada Co. spokesman said, “People are the lifeblood of today’s businesses – their passion and ideas have the power to part clouds and create a world of limitless opportunity. The Blue Sky Award is designed to celebrate their innovation and the leading-edge applications they inspire.”

Sitemasher Corporation plans to join other tech industry stakeholders in Beijing next week for the British Columbia Technology Summit, an exclusive program to introduce Canadian companies with Chinese industry partners.

The event is sponsored by the British Columbia Technology Industry Association (BCTIA) as part of a Canadian trade mission composed of high-tech companies in the information/communication, clean energy and environmental sectors.

The summit, which will take place May 21 to 23, is the second BCTIA program in its International Business Summits series.

“Sitemasher wants to hear from other parties interested in partnering and reselling technology in the Asia Pacific region,” said Ron Moravek, chief executive officer. “Samson Mow, our strategic alliance manager, will be on hand for one-on-one meetings in Beijing.” To arrange a meeting, contact Samson from May 19 to 23 in China at 13681887075.

Mow will make a presentation May 21, as one of 28 leading Canadian technology firms presenting, along with Verrus Mobile Technologies, Contec Innovations, E-xact Transactions, Threewave Software and Ballard Power Systems – to name a few.

The summit will be hosted at the British Columbia Canada Pavilion, for which an opening ceremony will be held May 22. The pavilion, located just outside Tiananmen Square, is intended to help build new relationships and strengthen partnerships between Canada and China, according to a spokeswoman with the BCTIA.

“The pavilion positions the province as the pre-eminent economic and cultural crossroads between Asia and North America,” she said, “building on what started at the 2006 Torino Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, where the British Columbia-Canada Place attracted more than 100,000 visitors.”

Sitemasher’s venture to Beijing comes on the heels of a trip to Las Vegas, where the start-up firm was one of 14 exclusive companies featured at Innovation Showcase at Software 2008 in April. The event was described by a trade-show official as “the stage on which the most exciting companies can present their solutions to a top-tier audience of industry leaders.”

“We did just that,” said Nicole Denil, Sitemasher’s vice president of sales and marketing. “And we had a captive audience, too. The Sitemasher system is a one-stop-shop for building, managing, and optimizing websites. We had fun showing off this revolutionary new SaaS-based technology.”

Sitemasher, with offices in Vancouver, British Columbia and Miami, was formed in August 2007 with six co-founders. Phil Calvin, initial founder and chief technical officer of Sitemasher, began building Sitemasher’s product 18 months prior to the incorporation. Eric Carlson became the sole venture capitalist and partner in December.

Calvin’s background includes founding Motivus Software Ltd., a pioneer in the next-generation remote-access marketplace. Motivus was acquired by Citrix Systems Inc. in March 2004 and continues to be a significant component of the Citrix Access Gateway product family.

With the Motivus success story under his belt, Calvin turned his entrepreneurial energy toward gathering a talented, experienced executive team from a variety of technology disciplines with a knack for pioneering new concepts to bring his Sitemasher vision to reality. Ron Moravek, chief executive officer, joined the new corporation in August 2007 along with Curtis Terry, chief financial officer and chief operating officer for Sitemasher, both from Electronic Arts, Canada.

Eric Dorgelo, vice president of development, joined the team from Rockwell. Denil joined Sitemasher from Microsoft Corporation.

About Software 2008 Conference:

The comfortable equilibrium between software supplier and IT buyer has been shattered. Open Source is now an accepted – and often favored – option to traditional commercial software. Do not adjust your dial: The revolution has begun.

Never before has the future of software been so unclear.

Never before have options been so rich.

Software 2008 is the one, must-attend event of the year for software industry executives and IT professionals!

VANCOUVER, BC - January 24, 2008 - Rocket Builders today published its "Emerging Rockets" list naming over 50 privately held BC technology companies that are demonstrating great potential, and are clearly "ones to watch" in their respective sectors.

Following on the heels of last week's publication of the 2008 "Ready to Rocket" list, which recognizes information technology companies with high revenue growth prospects in 2008, this "Emerging Rockets" list recognizes companies in many technology sectors that, despite great potential for market breakthroughs in 2008, may be a few years away from maximum revenue growth.

According to Dave Thomas, Senior Partner at Rocket Builders, "The audience of the Ready to Rocket list have been expressing interest in more sectors and earlier stage companies. The I.T. Sector has always had a large number of companies to choose from, and last year we realized that other sectors were showing similar depth and diversity. Investors, trade officials and channel partners will find value in this new list."

On Thursday January 17, 2008 Fundfindr interviewed Ron Moravek, CEO of Sitemasher.

Fundfindr.com features successful entrepreneurs, investors and other stories of interest. Fundfindr is launching its official website (http://www.fundfindr.com/) mid February 2008.

Before joining Sitemasher in 2007, Ron Moravek was a co-founder of Relic Entertainment and more recently acted as VP and COO of Electronic Arts Canada. Ron met with Fundfindr reporter, Shannon Kaplun, and revealed his top three tips for entrepreneurs:
  1. Know that you can make money from your idea.
  2. Validate your idea: talk to everyone and get feedback.
  3. Assemble a great team.
“Sitemasher makes implementing sophisticated sites simple by taking a fundamentally different approach to creating and managing websites. The Sitemasher team believes the entire website lifecycle management should be easy, flexible, and fast."

Sitemasher shifts into high gear!

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 22, 2007 – Sitemasher Corporation www.sitemasher.com), a start-up based in Vancouver, is revving up into high gear, intent on radically changing the way Web sites are created and maintained. Phil Calvin, founder and chief technical officer, began building the product, Sitemasher, in the summer of 2006. The company was formed in June 2007, and in November opened its doors in Kitsilano with a team of six co-founders.

The revolutionary new product is expected to take the complexity out of building, updatingand maintaining powerful Web sites. Sitemasher’s vision is for Web site creators to be able to create very sophisticated sites without programming via its 100 percent browser-based platform that is completely drag-and-drop enabled. Because the ability to manage content is built right into the product, the need for integrating expensive content management systems is eliminated. Sitemasher is hosted as Software as a Service (SaaS), which enables access anywhere and rich collaboration among developers, designers and content owners, and eliminates the need for up-front software and hardware costs.

“Creating and maintaining Web sites is too complex today,” said Ron Moravek, chief executive officer of Sitemasher. “Having a custom Web site built to meet your company’s needs is time-consuming and requires many iterations of custom programming. Sitemasher has developed a way to create and update even the most complex Web sites without the need for programming. It’s all about making sophisticated Web sites simple.”

“We do this by changing the way Web sites are stored at their very root,” Calvin said, when asked how the new product works. “Sitemasher takes a fundamentally different approach to the underlying storage, separating content, layout, presentation and behavior into distinct, manageable elements that can be arbitrarily manipulated without impacting other elements.”

A key to Sitemasher’s business model is the SaaS hosting protocol, which not only relieves the burden of managing complex technology, it also enables companies to pay for their technology as a service versus making a heavy up-front investment.

“The fact that the system is hosted in a SaaS environment provides a whole host of business benefits as well as technical benefits such as reliability, scalability and collaboration,” said Nicole Denil, vice president of sales and marketing. “Our entire goal at Sitemasher is to take the technology headaches away. We strive to enable our customers to implement extremely powerful Web sites quickly and easily, so they can maximize their Web IT investment and focus resources on what’s really important – their business.”

Sitemasher made its first launch debut, winning the demo contest for its “alpha” technology preview at a Launch Party with a Twist event December 5 at the Republic Bar in Vancouver. Sitemasher struts their stuff at Launch Party

Sitemasher makes a debut, demoing its product for the first time at the LAUNCH PARTY WITH A TWIST (http://www.launchpartyhq.com/) event, Wednesday, December 05, 2007 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM at the Republic Bar in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

While Sitemasher has many benefits in design, content management, and maintenance, we will be showing just a few key capabilities at the launch event to highlight just how easy it is to build a website. These capabilities will focus on three key pain points:

  1. Creating access for others to add content. Allowing marketing or the content owner to take control of the site to add content without relying on a programmer, their internal IT department, or a third party website agency, to add content or make changes to their Web site for them.
  2. Making design easy without programming through standard tools and workflows. With Sitemasher, because your designer will be able to implement widgets (components that previously needed to be written with code) with standard tools and workflows through drag and drop tools such as: Drag and drop elements (Widgets such as YouTube, Microsoft Virtual Earth) and form creation made easy.

  3. Mobile site creation made easy without parallel development or testing on mobile devices. Avoid development and testing resources required to make your website compatible with mobile hardware.

About the Team:
