When Gurbaksh Chahal was 15, he used to spend most of his time while surfing on the Internet. One day he noticed that a company called DoubleClick was providing Internet Ad services. He didn’t know how to program, but realized that advertisers would need a way to track visits online. He thought he could buy software to help him, and found a guy in London who had technology that he offered him for $30,000. He didn’t have the money, but made arrangements to pay him 90 days after Gurbaksh tested the software. He went online and incorporated the company for $99 with the help of his elder brother.

When three months were up, he had made $100,000 in revenue. He realized that he had a business. He named it “ClickAgents”. Within a year, he had $1 million a month in revenue. After some time an investment bank called and asked if he was interested in selling ClickAgents. Then he sold “ClickAgents” for $40 million. What about BlueLithium appealed to a buyer like Yahoo?

Last Year, Gurbaksh Chahal sold his 2nd company “BlueLithium”, a global online ad network that focuses on behavioral targeting to YAHOO for $300 million in cash. The company then had 175 employees and nine offices.

What about BlueLithium appealed to a buyer like Yahoo? This was the question Gurbaksh, who often goes by “G”, was supposed to answer in an interview by Andrea Cooper. For this Gurbaksh answered “It came down to the fact that we had an asset. That asset was a great behavioral technology, and we were the fastest-growing and youngest of all the companies out there in our industry. We were nimble and had a great team. We created a name in the marketplace in three and a half years. We were one of the top networks.” These were the main reasons why Yahoo acquired BlueLithium.

Gurbaksh Chahal is accustomed to risk. That’s how the 25 years old Indian American raised in San Jose built an Internet fortune for himself, and he is not going to stop taking chances any time soon. Although, Chahal can live anywhere, he prefers “San Francisco” for its cosmopolitan air, the business opportunities, and its proximity to his family.

Having seen the amount of money being made by prominent Internet companies of the 1990s, Gurbaksh founded “Click Agents”, one of the first online Ad networks to focus on the needs of performance-based advertisers, rather than brand advertisers. The business model focused on performance-based Internet advertising solutions. Known in the advertising industry as cost-per-click or CPC, the advertiser only paid when an Internet user clicked on its banner or button advertisement.

Gurbaksh Chahal was the Chief business, sales, and strategic visionary behind the company. Gurbaksh sold Click Agents to ValueClick in November 2000 at the agreed amount $40 million. He stayed with ValueClick for 18 months becoming the youngest executive of the multi-billion dollar NASDAQ-listed company.
