Associated Press: O.J. Simpson Faces 6 Years to Life at Sentencing.
The 61-year-old former football star who walked away a free man after a celebrated murder trial was due to learn Friday how much time he'll spend in a Nevada state prison for a botched attempt to recover sports mementoes and personal items from two collectibles peddlers. Neither Simpson, who was acquitted of the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles, nor his co-defendant and former golfing buddy, Clarence "C.J. Stewart, testified at trial. They were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery, and face mandatory prison time -- a minimum of six years and up to life. Simpson attorney Yale Galanter has said his client won't address the court. Stewart will, said his lawyer, Brent Bryson. "Best-case scenario we're hoping for is six years. That's the bottom-end number before being eligible for parole," Bryson said.
Associated Press: Authorities say a husband-and-wife burglary team robbed about 60 homes in rural eastern Missouri and deputies discovered 100 guns at the home of the man accused of selling the stolen loot online.
All the houses were robbed in broad daylight in the last 45 days, authorities said. Police said Kibb Patrick Howard and Carla Kay Howard confessed and said they needed money to feed their addiction to heroin. Deputies said the guns, jewelry, televisions and other valuables were sold online by Michael Carl Sifrit, who knew the goods were stolen. All three face multiple state charges and authorities are seeking federal indictments, Lincoln County Lt. Andy Binder said. They are jailed in Warren County, where the first charges were filed. The jail did not have attorney information for the three suspects. Police said they found about 100 stolen weapons and other stolen property at Sifrit's home in Fenton. Three guns and stolen jewelry allegedly were found at his S&S Jewelers in Warrenton, which police described as a front for the illegal sale of the stolen property. Witnesses had reported seeing a man and a woman with a tattoo on her neck in a maroon Jeep Cherokee in the areas of the burglaries. Binder said Carla Howard, 26, would knock on the front door of a house. If someone was home, she'd make up a reason for being there, sometimes saying she was there to "pick up the puppies." If the home was unoccupied, Kibb Howard, 27, would break in and take items such as guns, jewelry and televisions, Binder said. Police said the couple admitted to stealing about 150 weapons.
The Star Ledger: An Old Bridge High School drama teacher was arrested today on charges she had a sexual relationship with a male student that started in February, authorities said.
Lisa Glide, 35, of Howell Township, Monmouth County, faces a second-degree charges of sexual assault and child endangerment, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said in a statement issued today. The prosecutor's office began an investigation into Glide on Nov. 25 after receiving information about the sexual relationship, Kaplan said. Investigators determined Glide began having a sex with the boy in February, when he was still a student at the school, Kaplan said. The 17-year-old graduated in June, school authorities said. Glide began working as a drama teacher at Old Bridge High School in 2004 and also served as advisor of school productions and plays, Kaplan said. Previously, Glide was employed from 2001 to 2004 with the Marlboro School District and from 2000 to 2001 with the Jersey City School District, Kaplan said. In addition, Glide was a substitute teacher with the Weehawken School District from 1999 to 2000, Kaplan said.
People.com: While speaking to PEOPLE about his latest charitable efforts, Yankees star Alex Rodriguez commented for the first time on his relationship with Madonna.
"We're friends," Rodriguez, 33, says. Asked if there is any romance between them at all, Rodriguez reiterates, "We're friends - that's it." While rumors have swirled that the slugger and the singer, 50, have been carrying on a romantic relationship and flying around the country in order to spend time together, "I can tell you this," Rodriguez says, "I have never been on a plane with her." He also finds much of what's been written about them laughable: "I've been to two [of her] concerts, yet I've read that I went to 20. I've also read that we were buying an apartment together. That is absolutely ridiculous and not true." "You have to have a sense of humor when it comes to this stuff," Rodriguez adds. When pressed on how much time they have spent together, and whether he had ever stayed the night at Madonna's home, Rodriguez laughed: "If I answered every rumor we'd be here for three weeks." (A source close to Rodriguez tells PEOPLE that reports of his spending the night with Madonna are "completely, unequivocably false.") The "do as I say, not as I do" dilemma.
