I was fortunate enough to visit Kerala last week when I got to witness huge congregation of crowd from various districts during these festivals of Kerala. My visit to Kerala was during the time of the celebration of the famous Sabrimala Festival. One of the major attractions of Kerala is the presence of numerous extravagant temples which acquire intrinsic role in the culture of Kerala as they host magnificent festivals. Celebrated during the pilgrimage towards Sabrimala temple situated on Sahyadri Mountains, this festival propagates ideals of brotherhood and communal harmony amongst its people. I being a great devotee of Lord Ayyappa was all enthusiastic when I heard of the pilgrimage to the temple devoted to him- Shri Dharma Saastha Temple and hence, immediately packed myself for this journey. This seven day long procession to the temple is a festive season in Kerala which reaches its finale on the 14th of January. On this day a ritualistic celebration of Makara Vilakku Puja is held post 41 days of intricate journey people celebrates the legendary event of enshrining of lord Ayyappa. I count myself as the fortunate of the lot who witnessed the idol of Lord Ayyappa decorated with all the ancient ornaments made in gold the enshrining of the deity is the most important event of Kerala festivals. The festival then included a procession towards hill of the Sahyadri ranges to witness the celestial light that appears on this day. I was completely mesmerized at the sight of the Makarjyothi on the hills and was deeply honored at this grand gesture of lord’s blessing to us. Such celebrations in Kerala are a measure of propagating brotherhood and love amidst people. These phenomenon event witnesses great crowds due to the faith and curiosity of the people about the divine presence of the lord in the premises of Sabrimala shrine which drove me as well to these pristine environs of Kerala. ![]() This year was the most memorable year of my college life as this time we finally went for a South India tour during our vacations. The visit to the southernmost part of our nation was an amazing experience for all of us. Our tour to South India included the main states of the area beginning from Kerala to Tamil Nadu and moving on finally to several parts of Karnataka. South India situated in the peninsular Deccan Platueau is distinguished as the home of the Dravidians and is surrounded by three water bodies Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. The area also contains the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats and two important rivers Tungabhadra and Kaveri. Our South India itinerary began with the visit to the pristine environs of Kerala. We explored the entire area beginning with the tranquilizing backwaters of Alleppey, Kumarakom to the sun kissed beaches of Kovalam. It was truly a heavenly experience to watch various species of animals at Thekkady National Park performing their routine works amidst the verdant environs. My most exhilarating experience was that of a drive at the traditional houseboats- Kettuvallom at the largest backwater stretch in Kerala- the Vembanad Lake. The second half of our South India tour provided us an opportunity to visit the Southeastern coast of India- Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is stretched up to the point where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meets and hence is a retreat to nature’s bounty. Our tour to the state began with an exhilarating safari at Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Our South India travel package also included visit to most splendid and amazing temples at the various temple towns of Tamil Nadu which included a visit to Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Kanchipuram, Chidambaram and Thanjavur. One of the main attractions in South India is Karnataka and we were fortunate enough to enjoy an extensive tour of the place. We visited various cities of the state starting from Mysore- famous for its Chamundi Hills and Mysore Palace followed by visit to Srirangapatna and Sravanbelagola- where we were mesmerized at the sight of world’s tallest monolithic statue of Gommateshwara. At Belur, Aihole and Halebid we explored unique Hindu temples well known for their exquisite art and architecture. This South India tour certainly have been an experience for life as I got to witness many unexplored wonders of the Southern part of my country. ![]() Last year during mid- autumn, I set off for a South India Wildlife Tour in Kerala. The tour was one fabulous expedition that I always love to recall and rewind. Kerala which is popularly known as God’s Own Kingdom, is a fascinating tourist destination in India. The place is one of the beautiful and scenic states in India enriched by an affluent flora and fauna. Further favoured by a cool climate my Kerala Wildlife Tour was among the best wildlife trips I have ever embarked on. My Wildlife Tour in Kerala lasted for about a month during which I could spot a variety of wild animals including leopards, sambhar, gaur, Bison, lion- tailed macaque, spotted deer, langur etc. I also enjoyed watching a variety of exotic and beautiful birds including some of the migratory birds. It was like a dream come true for me during the tour which was favoured by the valued assistances of the Tour Operators in Kerala. I have already explored a Kerala Tour but unluckily due to some time restraint I could not enjoy a particular wildlife tour in the state. And even after I have accomplished the feat I still crave for another tour in the state in my next India Tour. I am planning for another Wildlife Tour in India again during which I will also spend some time in Kerala. The state fascinates me more than any other state in the country. Ranging from its serene backwaters to its exotic and lustrous beaches the state is an ideal destination for either a wildlife tour or a general expedition.
The rolling high ranges of the Western Ghats on east have shielded Kerala from mainland intruders. This also plays a vital role in determining the climate. They interrupt and restrict the entry of thick undulating clouds from the Arabian Sea at the commencement of every rainy season. The resulting precipitation still ensures bountiful of rain from June well into October – called the edavapathy, and again, from November to February – called the thulavarsham. The exquisiteness of these green hills is unique, inimitable and unparallel.Honey Hills’ is the literal meaning of Thenmala and is one of the popular Kerala Hill Stations
