Landing Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:02:52 +0200 Exhibitions: Magic in Ancient Egypt: Image, Word, and Reality December 22, 2006–September 28, 2008 Brooklyn Museum 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, New York 11238-6052 (718) 638-5000; TTY: (718) 399-8440 Suggested Contribution: $8; Students with Valid ID: $4; Adults 62 and over: $4; Members: Free; Children under 12: Free : Wednesday–Friday: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday: 11 a.m.–6 p.m. How the Egyptians, known throughout the ancient world for their expertise in magic, addressed the unknown forces of the universe is explored in this exhibition of twenty objects from the Brooklyn Museum's world-famous collection. Ancient Egyptians did not distinguish between religion and magic. They believed that the manipulation of written words, images, and ritual could influence the world through a divinely created force known as Heqa, personified as the eldest son of the solar creator Atum. Heqa could be used by the gods to control and sustain the universe and by humans to deal with problems of ordinary life. The exhibition includes a relief of a son of Ramesses II, Prince Khaemwaset, who became legendary as a sage and magician; a bronze figure of the goddess Isis, known as "great of magic," holding a cobra that also had magical powers; a magical healing stela inspired by myths of Isis healing Horus of a scorpion bite; and a headrest with images of Bes and Taweret, deities who protected the dead and the living. The exhibition also examines connections between magic and medicine, including the consumption of liquids imbued with magical powers; and the use of magic after death through such objects as funerary figurines that were created to carry out any work in the afterlife the gods might require of the deceased. This exhibition is curated by Richard Fazzini, Director of the Brooklyn Museum's excavation at the Temple Precinct of the Goddess Mut in Egypt. 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, New York 11238-6052 (718) 638-5000; TTY: (718) 399-8440 Suggested Contribution: $8; Students with Valid ID: $4; Adults 62 and over: $4; Members: Free; Children under 12: Free : Wednesday–Friday: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday: 11 a.m.–6 p.m. http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/ancient_egyptian_magic/ Fri, 18 Jul 2008 05:52:40 +0200 7/26/2008, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM The Random Tea Room 713 N. 4th St, Philadelphia, PA Empowerment Group Women Entrepreneurs' Circle

PHILADELPHIA, PA JUNE 15, 2008: On June 21, 2008 Sisters’ Sanctuary™ will release it’s new product, ‘Healing The Gap!’ Discussion Prompts that Promote Healing and Bonding Conversations Between African American Women and Teen Girls, A Five Topic Audio Series. ‘Healing The Gap!’ is a five topic interactive audio discussion program Lead by Sisters’ Sanctuary™ Personal Empowerment Coach and Founder, Lacey C. Clark!. This interactive program is designed to promote bonding and healing conversation between African-American Women and Teen Girls. The entire 5 disc set is $97.97. Downloads are available for $79.97. Orders can be purchased with Sisters’ Sanctuary. ‘Healing The Gap!’ is based on Author and Personal Empowerment Coach Lacey C. Clark!’s research of today’s generation and experience as a facilitator of Sisters’ Sanctuary™ summer camps, workshops, classes and seminars for teen girls and their parents. The ‘Healing The Gap!’ topics are Heart Full of Peace (Stress Management); ‘Loving the Woman in the Mirror (Self-Image); ‘Loving My Body Like It’s Golden (Body Image); The Baby and the Daddy (Exploring Men and Boys); Un-Shaming Sex and Sexuality (Sex and Sexuality). These topics are support for mothers, grandmothers, teachers, counselors, mentors and any African-American Woman with a connection to our teen girls. “I created this 5 topic series, because I have witnessed the disconnection and level of difficulty that women are having with communicating in a healthy and positive way to teen girls today. This series is a solution to bridging that gap and helping women and young girls build healthy relationships,” says Lacey C. Clark!. This program will help foster mutual respect between African American women and their teen girls. ‘Healing The Gap!’ gives the tools to recognize and overcome communication barriers brought on by age, culture, etc. This discussion program encourages healthy decisions around body image and peer interaction and promotes the practice of self-love and self-respect. ‘Healing The Gap!’ increases bonding as well. By using ‘Healing The Gap!’, mothers, grandmothers, teachers, counselors, mentors and etc. will strength themselves as an African American Woman and have the tools to help teen girls craft the proper building blocks for a strong foundation in Womanhood. Lacey C. Clark! is the Lead Personal Empowerment Coach of Sisters’ Sanctuary™, Founder of the Self-Love Movement and Author of Celebrate HER Now! They quickly realized that the options were few and far between. They decided to create a new venue for themselves and like-minded-artists in Philadelphia and the Art Star Craft Bazaar was conceived; an open-air market, where emerging artists & crafters could sell their wares to the public. Twenty vendors were chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis and the event was held at The First Unitarian Church over the course of a few weekends that summer. During the show, Megan and Erin met many talented artists who were all looking for viable venues for their work. The pair opened up Art Star Gallery and Boutique November of 2004 to help fill the void for emerging artists across the country. The Art Star Craft Bazaar continued to grow over the years and has served as an extension of the gallery. “There are so many talented artists that we have met along the way. We wish we could show and represent all of them, but our space is limited. The Bazaar enables us to introduce even more interesting artists to the public, that we may be unable to show in the gallery due to space limitations,” states Megan. The show is now juried and boasts over 100 artists annually. Last year over 4,000 people attended the show. Shoppers can expect affordable, high quality, and extremely unique goods from a variety of media. In it’s 5th year, The Art Star Craft Bazaar has become Philadelphia’s most cutting edge craft fair.
