You see, many people can have extremely high levels of uric acid in their body, but not show any symptoms of gout.

It is believed that some bodies just naturally store high levels of uric acid and there is no cause for alarm so long as there is no evidence of gout forming.

Gout is most likely to form in those who already have hyperuricemia and are significantly overweight.

The connection is impossible to miss from various studies that have been done.

For those who do develop the painful symptoms, it isn't quite so easy or simple to deal with.

The levels of uric acid in their bodies develop into crystallized points of pain in the joints.

And then Gout causes the joints to swell up to two or three times the normal size, and even a casual brush against a sore, gout-ridden toe can result in searing agony.

Have You Got The Symptoms of Gout?

Most often, gout shows up in the big toe.

The first thing in the morning, the gout sufferer will notice that his toe is considerably swollen, sometimes more than double or triple its normal size.

A radiating pain will shoot up the foot if so much as a sheet touches the offending appendage.

Walking is out of the question.

The joint of the big toe will be stiff, and the area surrounding it will be inflamed, red and possibly hot, suggesting some sort of infection.

These symptoms will most likely have come on overnight, while the patient slept, and without any warning at all.

It's not just the toe that can be affected, though. The ankle, knee, wrist, and fingers can also be involved. In fact, over time, just about any joint can be directly affected by gout.

Who Gets Gout?

Roughly 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from gout, according to the National Institute of Health...

And 9 out of 10 of those are men, and most of them are diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 50.

But, as women head into their 60's and enter menopause, they have a more difficult time keeping their weight down and the incident rate of gout increases dramatically.

The condition is extremely rare in men and women of "normal" weight or in people under 40 years of age.

Given that the disease is a result of being overweight and from a continued build up of uric acid over years, the older a person is when the first symptoms appear the more mild the condition is likely to be...

...up until the year 2000 I was giving machine based exercises and long boring 30 to 40 minute "cardio" runs to many soccer players and they were getting bigger and stronger; however they were still were getting hamstring and quadriceps pulls and were still a little slow. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks....
