However, although many salt water pool manufacturers promote the ease of converting your pool to a salt water system, the pool treatment methods are not any easier than those of a typical pool. Before your convert your system, it is important to understand how it works and why you should (and should not) consider converting. Salt treatment begins with understanding exactly how salt water pools' chlorination systems work. The basis behind this system is that you do not have to add chlorination for this treatment. However, that does not mean that there is no chlorine. That's actually a common misconception. There are chemicals in a saltwater pool. Treatment is still necessary, and although you do not have to manually add chlorine (in most cases), there is still chlorine in the system. The chlorine, however, comes from the salt itself. A salt system is not the same as swimming in the ocean. In fact, the water in a pool system is actually still considered fresh water because there is only a very low level of salt in it (there's more salt in your eyes). However, this amount of salt, when put through a control box, can create enough chlorination to keep your pool clean, blue and safe for swimmers.

The control box on a salt water pool treatment system is a device that actually sends electricity through the sale. The longer the electricity runs through the salt, the more chlorinated the water will be. The pool treatment system should automatically control this, but you'll still need to use test strips to test for chemicals often. You can control how chlorinated the water is using the salt control knob. In addition, with the control box, you can tell when you need to add more salt to the system. Although you will not have to add chlorine as part of your salt water pool treatment program, you will have to continuously check for alkalinity and pH level. It is a good idea to check your water once a week if you use it moderately and even more often if you use it often or get a lot of rain, which can affect the acidity levels. As part of your pool treatment plan, you also need to check the calcium levels in your pool. With too much calcium, your pool water will be "hard" and may leave unsightly build up along the steps and tiles. In addition, excess calcium in your salt water can clog the pump and control box system.

Cartridge Filters are Different Cartridge filter systems for swimming pools have become much more popular over the last several years. Pool owners like the convenience. No sand leaking into the pool, no messy DE to add and changing filter media is relatively quick, easy and clean. Cartridge filter systems definitely have some strong points to recommend them. Filter Cartridges Unlike sand and DE filters, cartridge filters feature a re-usable cartridge. If you've neglected your cartridge it can be enough to drive you really crazy and leave the job undone.

What Can I Do? Unfortunately there is no sure fix for this shortcoming of cartridge filters. Without a provision for backwashing or vacuuming to waste heavy debris has to move through the filter grid. If the debris is too heavy the grid will clog and pump suction will drop off severely. Proper cartridge maintenance is the only remedy. If you buy or own a cartridge filter system be sure to purchase an extra set of cartridge filter elements and filter cleaner. Put one set of elements in service for up to a month then replace them with the new set. Soak the used set in filter cleaning solution overnight, hose off, allow to dry and store. Used the cleaned set for your next filter element replacement. Alternating element sets like this will ensure that your filter is as clean as possible to resist clogging and will considerably extend the life of your elements. Extending cartridge life is a good thing as new elements can cost hundreds depending on your filter.

A favorite glaze of mine is Modern Masters Tintable Glaze.

Start with a base coat A "base coat" is a solid colored background upon which the wood graining technique will be applied. Base coats are usually various shades of "buff" ranging from gold buffs to warmer orange buff colors, other base coat colors are variations of red or coral for Mahogany to light shades of cream for Maple and other light woods. The key to good graining is to do it in layers A common method of wood graining is to put down a first "background" layer consisting of wood pores or cell structure over which a second primary grain layer is applied.

The background layer There are a lot of different variations of background grain that the wood grainer employs depending on the wood he is trying to replicate. One common background graining method is known as "flogging" , which is done by lightly patting the wood graining glaze with the flat edge of the bristles of a Flogger brush. It is not absolutely necessary to use a special Flogger brush (although they do a better job), you can substitute a standard paint brush for flogging.

The click of the switch, sounding like the report of a .22 in the quiet of the house, has awakened the little darling, and you have to spend another five minutes quieting him/her down again. There's really no need at all to suffer this sort of thing. For less than a dollar apiece you can buy absolutely silent toggle switches of the mercury type. These are regarded by some parents as the greatest boon since disposable diapers. Removing an old switch and installing a silent one is a simple screwdriver operation. It will take you about ten minutes to do the first switch and probably five for the second. The utility of mercury switches is not restricted to households with children, of course.
