“It’s a matter of principle for me. I cancelled the trip because it involves the honour of the constitutional office I hold” What a bunch of bull! Why can’t he simply admit that his ego got the better of him? Frisking takes nothing more than 30 seconds, how the hell do you drag in the honour of constitutional office in all this. This clearly show that people who have been on the KURSI too long think that the KURSI belongs to them and that they are above every law.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee called off a scheduled official visit to London earlier this month, after he was told he would be frisked at the airport The British protocol department informed the Indian High Commission in London on October 3 that the Speaker would not be exempt from frisking as has been the practice prompting him to cancel the tour The Lok Sabha Speaker is in British protocol’s list of people exempt from body frisking, said a British source.

Chatterjee visited London several times during his four year tenure and was never frisked. A British High Commission spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on individual cases.” “It’s a matter of principle for me. I cancelled the trip because it involves the honour of the constitutional office I hold. I can’t understand why they did this, that too at the last minute,” said Chatterjee.

After reading the letter Ratan Tata must have asked… Who the hell is Sourav Ganguly? ;) Seriously… who does Sourav think he is writing a letter to Ratan Tata!

Excerpt from The Telegraph:

Sourav Ganguly today wrote to Ratan Tata on the eve of his meeting with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, urging the industrialist to manufacture the Nano in Bengal.

Urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya, believed to be close to the former Team India captain, confirmed that Ganguly wrote the letter.

“He (Ganguly) said Bengal is on the verge of making a turnaround. Therefore, if you leave now, the state’s economic interest will suffer,” Bhattacharya said.

If the Tatas stay in the state, a huge employment opportunity would be created and the youth of Bengal would benefit, Ganguly, a Tata Steel employee, is believed to have written.

Another public appeal also came, but not from the cricket field. CII mentor Tarun Das today issued a statement requesting Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her colleagues to act in a responsible manner before “it’s too late (to keep the plant in Bengal)”.

Terror Poll by HT & CNN IBN This poll has been taken from HT newspaper which was conducted in 7 cities by HT and CNN-IBN as to what the citizens think of Government, Religion & Security in light of the recent bomb blasts in various Indian cities.

What I want to know is who are those 6% people who think that the government has been very successful at controlling terrorism? Not just that, who are the 48% people who think that the government has been somewhat successful?

Were only corrupt politicians part of this survey?

Article taken from HT epaper. What a contrast between Hockey and Cricket!

Here is the farce of India’s national sport: players scrounge for food, bulbs, washing machines and even uniforms.

In April-May this year, the Indian men’s hockey team went to play the four nation tournament in Australia. They ran up a food bill of Aus$18,816.50 (about Rs 7.2 lakh). The team did not have enough money to fund its food, which is strange in itself, but were rescued by an Indian expatriate who charged the entire amount to his credit card to “save India embarrassment”.

The government funded Indian Hockey Federation which had an annual budget of Rs 5 crore before it was dissolved this year was to pay him back.

Five months on, H.S. ‘Pali’ Chouhan, who left Jalandhar for Australia years ago to open a restaurant, is still waiting for the money. He has written to the IHF, then under K.P.S. Gill, and to other top Indian sports officials, but received no response.

With a mounting credit card bill and soaring interest on that, Chouhan has now written to the Union Sports Ministry. The Hindustan Times has a copy of that letter, dated September 15.

“I have always been a big fan of Indian hockey and they (the IHF) have used my love for the game and my sentiments about India to cheat me and it hurts,” Chouhan, who was managing the team’s catering, told HT from Perth.

This is the state of affairs when the government foots the bill for all major hockey events for anything over Rs 2 lakh, 75 per cent is paid upfront and the remainder on presentation of bills.

Even more farcical stories have emerged from women’s hockey. WHEN THE girls’ team was headed for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament at freezing Kazan this year, players had no uniforms to shield them from the elements while travelling.

According to informed sources, word reached Yashraj Films the company that had produced the superhit film Chak De.

Yashraj silently scrambled to put its film designers and dozens of tailors to work, waking up a button wholesaler in the night, and uniforms were stitched and dispatched in two days.

A key member of the Indian team at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Kazan told HT: “Yes, it’s true that some people related to films had provided us with travelling kits, but no one from the team had requested the same,” she said, declining to be named for fear of action.

In the past, training camps for women had bathrooms without bulbs. Getting a washing machine for the players who wash their own clothes took the team six months, and requests for good hockey kits, cameras, laptops, video analysers and physiotherapy equipment were stonewalled, according to an official with access to inventory records.

Chouhan said he had submitted all the bills of the team’s expenditure at Perth and Darwin to the IHF management. KPS Gill confirmed to HT that Chouhan was owed money. But claimed it was still lying with the Sports Ministry.

“As soon as we get the money, we will clear the dues,” he said. When asked whether the Indian team could not have left Australia without Chouhan paying the bill, he had no answer. “The government owes the IHF Rs 50 lakh as dues,” he said instead.

Sports Ministry spokesman Rajesh Malhotra sais 75 per cent of the amount had already been paid to the IHF ahead of the tour. “We reimburse the remaining 25 per cent after the submission of bills by federations,” he said.

So where is the money? At this point, no one’s quite sure. There is no question though of the government giving the dissolved IHF any money, after all its secretary general was sacked when a TV sting operation caught him accepting money for selection! So where does Chouhan go now? He doesn’t know. But he’s living in hope.

Ask him if he’ll ever help the hockey team in future and pat comes the answer: “Yes. How can I not? India is still my country and my love.”

Cribb sent in by Neelam Adhikari

As i logged in to write what I saw half an hour back, I read this cribb of yours asking to carry first aid box in trains. After reading it, I am thinking what I witnessed today is nothing, when we are not bothered about our fellow humans who will give a thought to street dogs. Today an insensitive idiot driver drove right over a dog crossing road, and I just like others did not do anything, I wanted to but I couldn’t Because I did not know what to do, sometimes I feel our education has made us cowards, we give thought to everything and that thought backed with our so called education always ask us to keep our nose out of it. What a shame.

Can anyone guide me what should we do in such situations, specially with animals?

On September 6, Dinesh K. Mehta, a 56 year old insurance advisor with Max New York Life Insurance, boarded a train at the Subhash Nagar metro station. Little did he know the journey would be one of the most traumatic experiences of his life.

Mehta was standing next to an elderly lady in the train, when he spotted several young men sitting. He requested a man to offer his seat to the lady.

“When the man rudely refused, I got really angry. I got into a bitter argument with him, and raised my voice. Suddenly I had severe chest pains and collapsed,” he recalled.

A bottle of water helped him get back on his feet. But he claims when he fell, no one helped him up.

“The other passengers were apathetic. No one showed any concern. On the contrary, at the Tagore Garden station, a person tried to kick my bags out of the train to get me to leave,” said Mehta.

Since he felt better after drinking water, he decided to continue his journey amidst bouts of chest pains, which became unbearable.

“I got down at Barakhamba station, and pleaded with the CISF personnel to help me to a hospital, but they refused. When I called up 100, a person asked me what they could do. Are we supposed to tell the police what to do, or should they know better?” questioned Mehta.

Finally, Mehta got himself admitted at Lok Nayak hospital, where doctors in formed him he had suffered a heart attack.

“What happened to me could also happen to someone else. Although my attack was not so serious, what if it was?” he asked, “Judging by the callous attitude of the commuters, I would have just been left to die.” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesman Anuj Dayal said: “The person concerned should have informed DMRC authorities.

Our staff is trained in firstaid, and we have a tie-up with a cab service that will transport the sick person to a hospital.” “There must have been some misunderstanding. Our personnel are supposed to help,” CISF spokesman Rohit Katiyar said.

Rickshaws are banned in Chandni Chowk but this does not mean that the Traffic Police have to puncture the tyre to discourage them from breaking the ban. I am pretty sure the High Court did not direct the cops to enforce the ban this way. Instead of encouraging green vehicles like cycle rickshaws the MCD had opted for CNG busses which are over crowded and congest the already narrow Old Delhi roads. What’s wrong with the MCD, when will they come back to their senses? Never!!!

Traffic Police in Delhi Punctures Rickshaw : Photo by Raj.K Raj HT

Excerpt taken from HT epaper : Article written by Neelam Pandey

High Court may have banned cycle-rickshaws in Chandni Chowk and areas surrounding, but for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) enforcing it is proving a tough task. Unable to rein them in, the civic body has been coming up with various strategies: the latest to join the league is deployment of ex-servicemen to restrict rickshaws from entering banned areas.

Not only this, the 40-odd ex-servicemen who would be positioned at various points in the Walled City would confiscate all rickshaws plying in Chandni Chowk and dismantle them.

At a time when developed countries have been promoting the use of green transport such as the cycle-rickshaw, Delhi, on the other hand, has been limiting their use in the city .

“Lack of enforcement in Chandni Chowk by the Delhi traffic police has resulted in rickshaws coming back on the streets even although banned initially We have now decided to deploy ex-ser .

vicemen, who will confiscate all rickshaws whether licensed or unlicensed, plying on banned streets. They will be sent to city zone stores, where they will be scrapped within seven days,” said a senior MCD official.

Interesting Read: Article taken from HT epaper written by Moushumi Gupta

Like Singapore, the city will soon have a fast-track response system for addressing all traffic- and road-related problems.

It will be monitored by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning&Engineering) Centre (UTTIC), set up recently by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

The decision to set up a fast-track system was taken by Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna at a meeting with UTTIC officials on September 13.

“We are working out the finer details before making the system operational,” said a DDA official.

Under the system, the Delhi Traffic Police will inform UTTIC as and when it comes across any safety hazards on the road like road caveins, breach in flyovers, road railings falling off etc or traffic bottlenecks.

UTTIC will immediately relay the message to the concerned road agency be it MCD, NDMC or PWD who will be asked to redress the problem.

“UTTIC will be sort of a centralised complaint monitoring centre for all road-related problems.

Earlier lack of coordination between different agencies resulted in delay in repair work. At times it took weeks before the problem was addressed,” said a DDA official.

The official added, “With this system in place, the civic agencies will have to redress the problem at the earliest.” According to officials, a similar centralised complaint-monitoring centre called the Land Transport Authority is operational in Singapore as well. “The idea to set up the system came from there,” said Ranjan Mukherjee, OSD to the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor The DDA board approved the setting up of UTTIC in December 2008.

The cell’s mandate includes ensuring implementation of various traffic and transport policy planned not only for the 2010 Commonwealth Games but also all future transport projects.

An article appeared in the HT today about securing your Wi-Fi connection so that no one else can use it for anti-social purposes. I fully believe that you should protect your Wi-Fi not only because other people might use but also to save on your internet bill if you are not on an unlimited internet access plan.

Having said that I do not agree with what the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) Chairman Mr. Nripendra Mishra had to say.

There is panic at the highest echelons of government. Last month, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposed a list of guidelines to the Department of Telecommunications on “how to curb the men- ace of unregulated Wi-Fi s”.

“We suggested that the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) get a list of Wi-Fi users in their clientele and make sure they maintain a log of users accessing the networks at home, office or public places,” said Nripendra Misra, TRAI Chairman.

In a couple years time pretty much everyone will be using Wi-Fi in their homes and offices and there is no way seeing the internet explosion that the ISPs can keep a list of people with Wi-Fi. Such an idea is not only NOT feasible but borderline stupid something which was not be expected from the TRAI Chairman.

Secure Your Wi-Fi (taken from HT) This image on the left also appeared in HT along with the article… I wanted to point out that by just plugging your wireless router to the electricity socket will not enable you to use the internet; it has to be plugged in with the internet modem also.

You can then log in to your router admin and make it password protected, so that only you are able to access it. There is no need to switch off the Wi-Fi router after every use if you have it password protected, switching the device on-off all the time will do more harm then good.

Cribb sent in Rajasekar about Tiger Airways.

Hi. I am Rajasekar, I have taken a vacation to my Sisters house in Singapore. I travelled in Tiger Airways since the cost was less (2k difference, but I never knew a disaster will wait for me on return…

On return I couldn’t convert $ (32,000) to Indian currency due to short of time and I have kept the cash in my Luggage. I was ahead of 10 minutes before take off and I reached Chennai at 11.45pm, when I reached home at 12.15pm, I was totally shock on seeing my baggage lock. The lock was drilled on the side and they have stolen my money from baggage and neatly locked it again (press lock). I took back my luggage to Airport at 1.45pm and met Chennai Airport manager where I was told to meet Indian Airways department, then from there to chief Security officer. I met him 3.00pm. The chief security officer coolly said that its happening for every Tiger Airways passenger and no response taken by Tiger Airways till now and my case is no big deal. He blamed Singapore airport authorities and demanded that its not possible in Chennai airport but i KNEW IT HAPPENED IN CHENNAI AIRPORT, reason was simple, I was the last passenger boarded in Singapore and i have to wait for more than 30 minutes to get my luggage in Chennai. Practically my luggage should have come earlier since its the last luggage boarded from Singapore, but it wasn’t.

I sent a mail with my ticket info, luggage tags & even the lock image to Tiger Airways for Justice. After long follow up I got a reply saying that Tiger airways will not take responsibility for outer fixture damages and cash loss (I hope its a pre set pdf doc sent to every one who has approached them),the airways knew that its a pre-planned crime executed against their customer but never bothered to take care and take actions towards criminals…if the criminals have planted a explosive in my baggage then what will happen to the flight, they are not bothered or if an illegal drug or narcotics kept in my bag then where’s my future will be?????, Will they also accompany me in counting iron grills.

I plead every one not to travel in Tiger Airways, I foresee that Tiger Airways will be renamed as tear airways by people shortly.

Whoever read this article pleas inform you friends and convey them not to travel in Tiger Airways for their safety. It 0% security guaranteed to customers.

Please forward this message to all your frequent traveller friends and I hope someone will take action against this airline shortly.

Delhi Blasts Victims, Pic Taken from HT

It took me 2 days to write something about the Delhi blasts, not because I did not have time but the reason is that I did not know what to say. I am genuinely disturbed by this incident, so many innocent people have died and countless families have been displaced. I read in the newspaper that the President, Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi all were appealing to people to stay calm and be brave… how do you expect people who have lost their loved ones to stay calm? Considering there is hardly any relief effort from the government.

It pains me to see politicians announcing high level meetings everytime something like happens, yet there is no stopping terrorism. Their views and plans keep changing as per their political stability and no collective effort is made to make the country more stable.

What is the intelligence doing? I am sure they would have had a tip off for the blasts then why could not they stop them from going off… and if they did not have any report then why are they so lousy at their jobs in the first place. I keep hearing that government is thinking of making another branch to counter terrorism in India, honestly If the Police, CBI and the IB can’t do the job then how will another agency help? Maybe it will help in playing the blame game.
