Extracts made from dried plant material comprise most of the herbal extract types. The standard ratio used when making a dry herb extract, also known as a tincture, is:

1 part dried herb to 8 parts liquid.

This is written as 1:8

Locating this ratio number on a purchased extract will tell you its strength.

Essentially, making a dried herbal extract involves the same procedure. You powder the herbs in a blender or coffee mill and then combine them with 8 times (in weight) as much liquid. For home purposes 100-proof vodka provides the ideal extracting medium since it is 50% water and 50% alcohol.

Extracts enable you to move the healing properties of an herb into a long-lasting medium of liquid. Shelf life of extracts is several years as compared to the dry herb in whole leaf or large chunk root form which are only viable for about one year. Dosage is also easier to judge with the liquid in a dropper bottle.

An herbal extract may help many migraine sufferers reduce the number of attacks by nearly 50%, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that a daily dose of Petasites hybridus root, commonly known as butterbur, appears to be safe and effective at preventing migraine headaches.

"The 75-mg butterbur dose reduced headache frequency by 48 percent -- a substantial treatment effect," says researcher Richard B. Lipton, MD, professor of neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York, in a news release.

"Butterbur is a traditional herbal treatment for migraine prevention," says Lipton. "Our study shows that butterbur really does reduce the frequency of migraine attacks, so it's a welcome addition to the therapeutic arsenal we have available to combat migraine."

The results of the study appear in the Dec. 28 issue of the journal Neurology.

Butterbur May Aid in Migraine Treatment

In the study, researchers compared the effects of 50 or 75 mg twice a day of butterbur extract pills vs. a placebo in preventing migraine headaches in 245 people with frequent migraine. All of the participants reported at least two to six migraine headache attacks per month over the previous three months before the study began.

After four months of treatment, researchers found the 75 mg dose reduced migraine headache frequency by 48% vs. the 26% reduction found with the placebo. The 50 mg dose was associated with a 36% reduction in migraine headache frequency, which according to the researchers is not significantly different from the effects of the placebo.

Significantly more people in the 75 mg dose group had a 50% reduction in migraine attacks per month than those receiving the placebo.

The most commonly reported side effects of treatment with butterbur were gastrointestinal problems, predominantly burping.

Researchers aren't quite sure how butterbur works to prevent migraine headaches, but previous studies have suggested that the herbal extract has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation has been implicated in the cascade of events that trigger a migraine.

Lipton says raw butterbur root contains toxic chemicals that are filtered out during the manufacturing process, which is why he says it's a good idea to avoid "home-brewed" butterbur extract. Several commercial products containing butterbur extract are available, but manufacturing standards are not uniform for plant extracts.

The results in this study are based on use of the Petodolex brand of butterbur extract. Weber & Weber GmbH & Co., which produces Petodolex, also supported the study.

Herbal extract is a liquid solution of herbs and alcohol. The dried or fresh herbs are combined with alcohol, then the solid matter is removed leaving only the oils of the herbs mixed with the alcohol. This process is called extraction, hence the name, herbal extract. For example an extract made from peppermint and alcohol would be called "peppermint extract."

Most commercially sold extracts have a herb to alcohol ratio printed on the label. When dry herbs were used to make the extract the ratio is commonly 1 part dried plant to 4 parts liquid, (alcohol and water). When fresh herbs are used the most common ratio is 1:1. This does not indicate the amount of that herb in the bottle, rather the ratio used in making the extract. Example: Dry herb strength: 1:4 means that the mixture used to produce the extract was 4 parts liquid, (alcohol and water) and one part dried plant. This is not the same as an ingredients list which is also present on most commercial extracts.

Herbal extracts are sold as dietary supplements and alternative medicine and commonly used for flavoring in baking and other cooking much like vanilla extract.

Herbal extracts are often referred to as tinctures by herbalists and alternative medicine practitioners.

Natural food coloring is unappealing
There is a growing movement toward usage of organic products with no additives, but truth be told, many people would find untouched foodstuffs inedible to the eye. Butter is normally white, but colored yellow for eye appeal. Off-colored foods may be perfectly edible and delicious, but may seem inferior by appearance. For example, often tree-ripened oranges are sprayed with a red coloring to correct the natural orangy-brown or mottled green color of their peels to the bright orange we expect. Food coloring is added to ice creams and sherbets to again meet consumer expectations. Would a candied apple taste as good without that bright red coating? Of course it would, but sales would drop dramatically.

Food color additives
The FDA separates color additives for foods into two categories: Certifiable or Exempt from Certification. Cerfiable color additives are man-made. They must be tested for consumption safety and approved or certified by the FDA to be added to their list. There are nine certified color additives on the FDA approved list from which a multitude of colors can be mixed.

Certified color additives are known as dyes or lakes. Dyes are water-soluble and be used in beverages, dry mixes, baked goods, confections, dairy products, pet foods, and other products. Lakes will not dissolve in water and are more stable than dyes. They are best-used in foods containing fats and oils or those foods which do not contain a lot of moisture to dissolve dyes, such as tablets, cake mixes, hard candies, and chewing gum.

A string of nearly 30 quakes peppered Sichuan province in the first twenty-four hours following Monday's deadly temblor and slowing the progress of rescue teams. All of those quakes were magnitude 4.0 and above.

Military doctors and soldiers arrived around midday and began their search for survivors and the injured in Wenchuan County, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Roads blocked by rocks and mudslides had hampered the effort to reach the epicenter in Wenchuan County, forcing military doctors and soldiers to walk to reach the area almost 24 hours after the 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook central China, the official news agency Xinhua said on Tuesday.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao ordered the military to make it a top priority to open the roads into Wenchuan County by mid-day Tuesday.

"We must try our best to open up roads to the epicenter and rescue people trapped in the disaster hit area," Premier Wen Jiabao said, according to the Xinhua news agency. Wen ordered roadways to Wenchuan, in Sichuan Province, cleared by noon Tuesday.

Several thousand additional soldiers should reach the area later Tuesday afternoon, Xinhua said.

The Chinese government said the death toll was sure to rise as authorities began to reach some of the worst-hit areas. Thousands remained trapped under the rubble, including hundreds of children at a half-dozen schools.

"Blocked roads, disrupted communication and continuous rainfall have all created obstacles to our rescue efforts," Wen said, according to Xinhua. "People's lives and property safety are the top priorities and many people are still trapped in debris."An expert told CNN the quake, which struck at 2:28 p.m. (2:28 a.m. ET) Monday, was the largest the region has seen "for over a generation."

Residents as far away as Chongqing -- about 200 miles (322 kilometers) from the epicenter in Sichuan Province -- spent Monday night outdoors, too afraid of aftershocks to sleep indoors.

"People are in shock around here," Colin Jones, a survivor Chongqing, told CNN.  Watch Jones describe the scene around him »

Nearly all the confirmed deaths were in Sichuan Province, but rescuers had not reached the epicenter of Wenchuan because roads linking it to the provincial capital, Chengdu, were damaged. Local radio quoted disaster relief officials as saying a third of the buildings in Wenchuan had collapsed and another third were seriously damaged.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport reopened Tuesday after authorities inspected its runways for damage following the quake, Xinhua reported. The resumption of air service gives the province additional links for funneling supplies into the badly damaged region.

China Eastern Airlines said it is ferrying in hundreds of rescue personnel and tons of cargo from eastern China, according to state-run media.

Joe Guo, a university student in Chengdu, told CNN the scene is chaotic as the military tries to rush aid into the surrounding rural areas.

"The traffic is not good because a lot of the roads were ... seriously damaged," Guo said. "The army people -- they were just running there to get the stuff in and the injured people out."

Some 2,000 tourists were stranded in the northwestern part of the province and a landslide buried a tourist coach in Sichuan's Maoxian County, killing 37, Xinhua reported.

The state-run Zhongxin news agency reported that a survivor who escaped Beichuan County in Sichuan Province described the province as having been "razed to the ground." Rescuers were stranded about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the county, Xinhua reported.

The Red Cross Society of China, coordinating some international aid efforts, encouraged financial donations because of the difficulty of getting supplies to those most in need. Impact Your World

based humanitarian group, is channeling aid through a partner agency in China, the group's director said. "Everyone is incredibly nervous and shocked about everything that's happening," Kate Janis said, adding that the first step for her organization was to arrive at the scene and assess what the agency could do.

At least six schools collapsed in the quake or its aftershocks, Xinhua reported. At one school, almost 900 eighth graders and ninth graders were believed to be buried, a villager said.  Watch a report on a school hit by the quake »

By Monday night, at least 50 bodies had been pulled from the rubble at Juyuan Middle School in Juyuan Township of Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, Xinhua reported.

"Some buried teenagers were struggling to free themselves from the ruins while others were calling for help. Eight excavators were working at the site. Devastated parents watched as five cranes worked at the site and an ambulance waited," Xinhua reported.

Some 600 people were confirmed dead and another 2,300 people were buried under two collapsed chemical plants in Sichuan's Shifang city, where 80 tons of ammonia leaked, Xinhua reported. The plants were among a series of buildings that collapsed, including private homes, schools and factories.  Watch a report on the growing toll inflicted by the quake »

The local government had evacuated 6,000 civilians from the area and was dispatching firefighters to help at the scene, Xinhua reported.

Much of the nation's transportation system was halted. Xinhua reported there were "multiple landslides and collapses along railway lines" near Chengdu.

Sichuan Province sits in the Sichuan basin and is bordered by the Himalayas to the west. The Yangtze River flows through the province and the Three Gorges Dam in nearby Hubei Province controls flooding to the Sichuan -- though there were no reports of damage to the world's largest dam.

Monday's quake occurred when the Tibetan plateau collided with the Sichuan basin, Zhigang Peng, an earthquake expert at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, told CNN.

"Earthquakes in this part of China are infrequent but not uncommon," he said.

The last major earthquake in the region occurred in the northwestern margin of the Sichuan basin when a 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 9,300 people on August 25, 1933.

While many of the most immediate efforts were focused on Sichuan Province, Xinhua reported that there were dead and injured also in Gansu, Chongqing and Yunnan.

A 40-car freight train, carrying 13 tankers full of gasoline, derailed and caught fire Monday in Gansu province, officials said, according to state-run media, cutting the Baoji-Chengdu railway.

Other stories of destruction poured in from around the country. Xinhua said one person was killed in Santai County, in the city of Mianyang, when a water tower fell.

A provincial government spokesman said officials feared more dead and injured would be found in collapsed houses in Dujiangyan City in Wenchuan County.

A driver for the seismological bureau said he saw "rows of houses collapsed" in Dujiangyan, Xinhua reported.

"Wenchuan is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's leading research and breeding base for endangered giant pandas," Xinhua reported. The condition of the center was not immediately known because all communication services were cut off.

Bruce Presgrave, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said the quake's effects were heightened because of its strength, proximity to major population centers and shallow depth. Shallow quakes tend to do more damage near the epicenter than do deeper ones, he said.

An earthquake with 7.5 magnitude struck the northern Chinese city of Tangshan in 1976, killing 255,000 people -- the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the last four centuries and the second greatest in recorded history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tangshan is roughly 995 miles (1,600 km) from Chengdu, the nearest major city to the epicenter of Monday's quake.

The United States. Agriculture Department allows producers to use natural food colors even if they aren't certified organic, although some purists argue that processors had better do without until there's an organic alternative.

Products that use natural colors can bear the Department of Agriculture Organic label. But they'd have to use all organic ingredients, including organic colors, to label their products "100 percent organic."

That's an attractive advantage, which is one reason why WhiteWave's Horizon Organic dairy brand would like to find organic colors as soon as possible, Ms. Shea said.

WhiteWave, which lists natural colorings in some Horizon yogurts, smoothies and cheeses, uses two of the most popular natural colors: annatto, a reddish pulp from a tropical tree, and natural turmeric, a yellow spice often used for curry. The company is also testing an organic color, but officials wouldn't say what kind.

WhiteWave experimented with coloring strawberry milk, but none of the current colors worked, Ms. Shea said.

So Horizon strawberry milk is white, unlike the bright pink nonorganic brands on the shelf. Ms. Shea said WhiteWave might reconsider adding reddish tint once there's a suitable – and preferably organic – option.

"This is going to be a market-driven opportunity for suppliers," she said. "If there's enough of a demand, they'll create the supply."

Tadalafil is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Erectile dysfunction is a condition where the penis does not harden and expand when a man is sexually excited, or when he cannot keep an erection. When a man is sexually stimulated, his body's normal response is to increase blood flow to his penis. This results in an erection. Tadalafil helps increase blood flow to the penis and may help men with erectile dysfunction get and keep an erection satisfactory for sexual activity. Once a man has completed sexual activity, blood flow to his penis decreases, and his erection goes away. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription. This product is available in the following dosage forms
[ Drug Class and Mechanism ] Tadalafil is an oral drug that is used for treating impotence (the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection). It is in a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
[ Pharmacokinetics ]     Erection of the penis is caused by the filling of the penis with blood. Filling occurs because the blood vessels that bring blood to the penis increase in size and deliver more blood to the penis, and, at the same time, the blood vessels that take blood away from the penis decrease in size and remove less blood from the penis.Sexual stimulation that leads to an erection causes the production and release of nitric oxide in the penis. The nitric oxide causes an enzyme, guanylate cyclase, to produce cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). It is the cGMP that is primarily responsible for increasing and decreasing the size of the blood vessels carrying blood to and from the penis, respectively, and causing the erection. When the cGMP is destroyed by another enzyme, phosphodiesterase-5, the blood vessels return to their normal size, blood leaves the penis, and the erection ends. Tadalafil prevents phosphodiesterase-5 from destroying cGMP so that cGMP stays around longer. The persistence of cGMP leads to a more prolonged engorgement of the penis with blood
[ Absorption ]     Tadalafil can be absorbed quickly after being taken orally, at the median time when is 2 hours after taking it, the plasma concentration reaches to the average observation maximum (Cmax). The absorptivity and absorption degree of Tadalafil is free of being influenced by foods, so it can be taken with or not with foods. The taking time (morning or night) has no effect in the absorptivity and absorption degree.
[ Distribution ]    When the average distributing cubage reaches to about 63 liters, it shows that Tadalafil has been distributed into tissues.
[ Clearance ]The average clearance of health volunteers is 2.5 liters per hour; the average half time is 17.5 hours. Tadalafil is mainly excreted from dejecta (about 61% dosage), and the majority from emiction (about 36% dosage) in the form of inactive metabolin.
[ Suited group ]  Treat ED, it can become effective with stimulation, it can’t used to women.
[ Dosing ]           For most individuals, the recommended starting dose of tadalafil is 15 mg to 30mg per day taken before sexual activity. The effect of tadalafil may last up to 72 hours. Individuals who are taking medications that increase the blood levels of tadalafil should not exceed a total dose of 10 mg in 72 hours.
[ Side Effects ]    The most common side effects of tadalafil are facial flushing (reddening), headaches, stomach upset, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms and nausea. Tadalafil also may cause low blood pressure, blurred vision and changes in color vision, and abnormal ejaculation. Tadalafil has been associated with prolonged erections or priapism (painful erections lasting more than 6 hours).
Tabu: The patients who are taking the Nitrates medicines are prohibited from taking it.
Storage:  sealed
[ Valid period ]     2-3 years
[ Specification ]    1kg/20kg/0kg can be offered according to client’s requirement.
