Fri, 02 May 2008 17:20:00 +0200 O.K let's say that you have been given the inspiration to have a go at some cake decoration in the kitchen. You have come to the decision that you want to bake and decorate your own cake from scratch. Perhaps you even thinking it's not going to be that difficult or complicated. Before you know it you have told a few people that you are going to bake a cake. Filled with new found confidence you even promise to share your cake at dinner or to bring your creation to the next dinner party. Then the doubt sets in, but whatever you do don't panic. The first time you bake and decorate your own cake, do it for yourself. It is best not to "give" your cake away to other people your after first attempt at baking a cake. It's always best to avoid creating your first cake for some big or special occasion such as a birthday. All that happens is that you put yourself under undue pressure to produce the perfect cake. Rule # 2 - Remember The Perfect Cake Does Not Exist When you are starting out in the world of baking and cake decorating, you may begin to wonder why your first efforts are not perfect. The heart of the matter is that the perfect cake does not exist. The different baking methods will not allow the perfect result. Each time you bake a cake it will end up slighty irregular or a bit off. This cannoy be helped as the baking process cannot be predicted. Amateur and professional chefs alike all agree this is whet makes it so challenging, not to mention interesting and exciting. Experienced pastry chefs all understand how to cover their tracks if the find their creations a bit irregular, they kmow that irregularities will happen. Rule # 3 - Walk Before You Can Run With Your Confectionary Creation Keep your first cake uncomplicated, do not try to make some sort of elaborate affair. This is very important and could save you a lot of frustration. If you try to create something too elaborate for your first attempt You will just be setting yourself up for disappointment. Keep it simple with just a few little touches of decoration. Decorating your cake simply is a good way to start out. You could use nuts, dried fruits and even edible flower petals, the secret is to keep things simple. Rule # 4 - Look Through Books and Magazines For Inspiration Looking through books and magazines can give you some inspiration for your first baking and cake decorating creation. Sometimes you can find all this information intimidating, just don't let it get to you. Mon, 21 Apr 2008 19:42:00 +0200 It seems like I am hanging on to the cupcakes at the moment. But I have a mission to find the best vanilla cupcake recipe. So therefor I tried two new recipes last night. One white 125 Best Cupcake Recipes by Julie Hasson and one yellow from Cupcakes by Joanna Farrow. I have tried the white one before but it failed. So this time I must have done my conversion from cup to grams perfect because it was some really great cupcakes that came out of the oven this time. The yellow one must be the most simple one to make a quick batch of tasty cupcakes. All the ingrediens goes in the bowl at the same time and you just beat the batter smooth and thats it really. You can add to the yellow dough: cocoa, lemon, coffee and chocolate chips. Both recipes made a nice dome, they did not shrink and today the paper cups is still sticking to the cakes. So how did they taste? The white was light, moist and a bit loose in the crumb. The yellow one was firm, very moist and had a nice buttery flavor. Thu, 17 Apr 2008 14:31:00 +0200 My family, being mostly German and Scandinavian, often challenges me to make authentic recipes. My husband challenged me to make Hungarian Goulash, and a while back I was asked to make a Swedish meatball recipe with a twist - it had to be an easy crockpot recipe.
A crockpot Swedish meatball recipe seemed ideal for me; Swedish meatballs are a dish that would only improve by marinating all day long. I came up with this, and although you can use frozen meatballs to make the super quick and easy version, I've included a very tasty recipe for homemade meatballs as well. 2 - 12 ounce packages frozen meatballs 1 cup water ½ tsp nutmeg 1 tsp minced onion ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp dill weed ½ tsp black pepper 4 ounces cubed goat cheese 1 cup sour cream Spray crock pot with non-stick cooking spray. Mix all ingredients except cheese and sour cream in crock pot, cover and cook on low 6-8 hours to high 3-4 hours. Stir in cheese and sour cream, cover and cook on high an additional 30 minutes. Serve with noodles (the most traditional), mashed potatoes, or rice, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Wed, 16 Apr 2008 20:35:00 +0200 knew they were the world's best pickles the moment I tasted one. That first taste took place around 1950, and I've tasted a lot of pickles since, am a pickle hound in fact, but I've never come across anything else as good.
They came to us by way of my Uncle Ronald Smith, who was an electrician in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana where I grew up. One day he was doing electrical work for a Bulgarian family, and they rewarded him with a sample pickle. He liked it so much he got the recipe and gave it to his wife Gladys, who gave it to Grandma Glidewell, who made it and gave some to me, and I thought I'd died and gone to pickle heaven. And thus, although they became an old Glidewell family recipe, they are really an old Bulgarian family recipe. The Bulgarian family, whose name I do not know, told Uncle Ronald that in Bulgaria, when the first heavy frost kills the tomato vines, they put all their end-of-garden vegetables -- including those green tomatoes -- into a barrel, fill the barrel with pickling brine, and eat the best pickles in the world all winter. It turns out, though, that the pickles' travel from Bulgaria to the U.S. was only one leg of a more ancient journey. Because I mentioned them to an Iranian woman, and she said, "My family has always made pickles like that! Exactly like that, except we add tarragon." Tue, 15 Apr 2008 21:05:00 +0200 When it comes to getting complicated in the kitchen, the first cuisine novice cooks think of is French. Whether it is presentation or preparation, it always seems that our European food lovers always do it so fancy. If you love cooking and are looking to get into a little more exciting menu, French cuisine can be just the thing you need. Don't let this distinguished culinary culture with the complicated tongue twisting titles throw you off. You can have a terrific culinary experience and here is how.
* Invest in Some Good Tools While you don't need to stock your kitchen with tons of expensive equipment. I few standard, quality tools can really improve you're chances of success. First and foremost, invest in a good chef's nice. A quality knife will slice, dice, carve, mince, and chop everything you need to get through a meal preparation. You may also want to invest in a smaller, paring knife for peeling or cutting small delicate vegetables or other ingredient. Among other tools you should consider investing in are utensils like a wooden spoon and a whisk, as well as a garlic press, cheese grater, and a pepper mill. For those of you who really want to invest in quality kitchen gear, nothing can ever really take the place of an electric mixer and bowls. * Use Quality Ingredients When it comes to food preparation, the final product is only as good as the ingredients you put into it. If you cook with sub par or barely fresh veggies and meats, the taste is going to come tell that story. The same is true for extremely cheap spices and oils. It's not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on only the finest, but it is a good idea to invest a few extra dollars into higher quality products like olive oil, garlic, cooking wines, and produce. If you wouldn't eat it or drink it you shouldn't cook with it. Sat, 12 Apr 2008 10:24:00 +0200 This is a free online recipe for making berries and nut salad. From the name, we can deduce that this recipe is made up mostly of berries and nuts.
2 packages of raspberry-based gelatin powder 1 and a 1/2 cups of blueberries 1 packet of gelatin powder 1/2 cup of mixed nuts chopped 2 cups of hot boiling water 8 ounces of cream cheese 1 cup of half and half 1 cup of cold plain water 1 cup of white sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract Below steps are the method and instructions: 1. Firstly we will need to chop the mixed nuts into smaller pieces. 2. Next, put the raspberry gelatin powder in the cup of boiling water. After that, place the mix into a appropriately sized pan. Let the mix chill in a refrigerator until it becomes firm. 3. Now, mix the unflavored gelatin ( not the raspberry one) with the cup of cold water. Put them aside for the moment 4. Next we need to mix the half and half into the saucepan. Boil the mix. Once done, turn of the heat. 5. Add softened cream cheese into the pan and beat until very smooth. 6. Next, put in the nuts, vanilla extract and unflavored gelatin mixture into the pan. Stir the mix until gelatin is fully dissolved. Let them cool and then pour over the chilled layer. Leave it to chill until the thing becomes firmed. 7. Add water to blueberry to make juice of about 2 cups of liquid. Bring this mix to a boil. After that, add the remaining raspberry gelatin package; stir until dissolved. Cool this mixture again and then stir in blueberries. Finally, pour this mixture over the cheese layer. Again leave them to chill until they become firm. The salad is now ready for serving. That is all for the salad recipe. Sat, 12 Apr 2008 10:22:00 +0200 This is a free online recipe. Today the recipe is about making Creamy Fruit Salad. As you can tell from the name of the salad, the ingredients are made up primarily of fruits.
These are the ingredients required for this recipe: 1 cup of Strawberries 1 cup of Cantaloupe 6 whole Strawberries 1 red or green Apple 20 pieces of Grapes. They should be of the green seedless variety. 1/2 cup of Pineapple 1/2 cup of Mandarin orange sections 1 & 1/2 cups of Topping 2 tablespoons of Coconut. OK, here's the recipe's method and instruction: 1. Firstly, we will need to cut up the fruits. Cut the strawberries into quarter pieces. As for the cantaloupe slice them into chunk sizes. We do so for the pineapple too. As for the apple, chop into chunks and remove the core. 2. Now in a 2 quart bowl, mix in all the fruits except for the whole berries. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Do so until the mix is well chilled which can take a few hours. 3. When we want to serve, prepared 6 sundae glasses. In the sundae glasses, spoon 2 T whipped topping that are thawed frozen non-dairy. Also top each portion with 1/4 cup of the fruit mixture. 4. Top each portion of fruit with 1 T whipped topping, then an equal amount of remaining fruit mixture. Spoon 1 T whipped topping onto each portion of the fruit. 5. Sun, 30 Mar 2008 08:12:00 +0200 Salt and Papper Paneer is easy to cook, Indian cuisine is among the leading cuisines of the world. With every state, city and even every home having its own recipes, the variety of food available in India is quite a vast. Over the course of time, various invaders have passed through India, some of which also left behind their influences on its cuisine. To know more about Indian cuisine and its style of cooking, keep browsing through the various pages of indiacook.com.
India is full of diversity. Every state is unique in its traditions and its food. In fact, food from one region may completely be different from another region. The common thread that runs through most of the Indian food though, is the use of numerous spices to create flavor and aroma. indiacook.com offers you recipes of various Indian food. Just keep browsing through the site. Sun, 30 Mar 2008 08:10:00 +0200 Been kicking this recipe around for some time as an alternative to Buffaloe Wings. Some recipes call for the wing but I think Im going with Drumsticks being more meatier and less time consuming. One recipes calls for corn flour and I am not too sure if I can find it in the local store.Anyhow cut the skin around the top of the leg and pull the meat down. Then you are ready to bread, fry and cook.Im thinking of frying and I will marinate first with some soy and Thai Chilli Sauce. Sounds good to me.
These lollipops are an absolute blast to eat. Granted, they are very labor intensive to prepare, but when it is all said and done, the sheer fun of eating these tasty creations makes it worthwhile. Since the meat is bunched down in a tight ball, it is exceptionally more tender and juicy than the average fried wing, and the right sauce put it over the top. While these are labor intensive, they are fun to eat and can easily impress your guests.I used a jar sauce for simplicity, and you can use BBQ, hot sauce, or any of your favorite wing sauces. Sun, 30 Mar 2008 08:08:00 +0200 Luscious Chocolate Resistance is futile! It is indeed hard to resist the sweet smell of chocolate cake, especially when the aroma is linked with nice memories.
My mom is a very open person, and always willing to share. Not only is she generous with her advice, but she will share with you all the things that she experienced. she is always willing to explain sewing, cooking, or advanced mathematics. There is one thing, however, that she guards jealously. It is her biggest secret, and she had promises that she will carry to the grave. And that is her chocolate cake recipe. So far, we tried everything to to get it from her. This is not just a normal chocolate mix cake recipe. This is seriously gourmet. It is not a simple chocolate cake recipe, either. Chocolate cake is normally very easy to make, but hers demands all day and all night. She is literally in there for 12 hours at a time, slaving away on the perfect chocolate cake. But it is wonderful. It is priceless. It is the most delicious cake that I have ever ate. I could do anything to get that chocolate cake recipe. Mon, 10 Mar 2008 14:56:00 +0100 We're all different. No two individuals are exactly alike; however, there are some general categories that seem to hold true. For instance, there are the Morning People and the Night People. I am definitely of the latter variety. About 9:00 p.m. something kicks into gear-a burst of energy, creativity, and feeling totally alive-and I could work until daylight, and have done so many times. Mornings are an entirely different story-for the first 30 minutes of the day I hardly know which planet I'm on. There are some Morning People in my family. They awake with the birds, happy, cheerful, and ready to meet the day with a smile-it's disgusting! Suffice it to say, we just don't understand each other.
In the culinary category there are also two basic classes of people as I see it: the Bakers and the Cooks. Baking is a very precise science. Flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, soda, milk, buttermilk, flavorings, shortening, oil, butter or other ingredients are used in a variety of ways in baked goods recipes, but they interact with each other in very specific ways. Measurements have to be precise or it's disasterville in the kitchen. Commercial bakers even weigh their ingredients to assure they're using just the right amount. Cookbooks have recipes that are tested and re-tested until the directions shown, if followed, will result in a tasty dish. There is very little room for personal variations unless the baker has a great deal of experience. When we see a famous chef on TV appearing to simply mix in this and that in a somewhat carefree manner, it's just because he or she has put in a great deal of time learning basic measurements and techniques that yield that mouth-watering masterpiece. Options like take away food and fast food have added to the cause and so did the food fusion joints that are coming up in every corner of the streets. Lots of views are put forward on the usefulness to learn cooking, together with individual empowerment, expression of originality, health issues and expenditure. Any one can cook very easily and tasty stuff if he or she is keen to make a sincere attempt.
If you know how to cook then it improves your self-assurance or confidence as you are no longer dependent on someone else for your own food. Then there is no necessity for you to look for food joints or restaurants. And moreover you don't have to rush for their opening or closing hours. With a little bit of guidance which you can obtain from the internet or from some recipe books available, you can cook as good and tasty as you will find in the food joints. And it also improves your patience and sometimes it is a pastime. From the ancient days till today a good cook or chef is always admired for his or her talent and people are always in the search of good foodstuff. Tasty cooking demonstrates the ability of a person to combine different ingredients and making it a special preparation which any one will love to have. Today good chefs are in huge demand in hotels and restaurants. Mon, 10 Mar 2008 14:49:00 +0100 Romanians are really fond of various types of tasty food preparations. There are everyday preparations, cooked whenever you feel like it. Again, there are preparations that are cooked only on special occasions. Here we are going to talk about two recipes: traditional cheese ball and cabbage rolls.
Well, Romanians do not like wasting time when they decide on a nice meal; so let us start off without delay. The first preparation we are going to choose is the cheese ball, which finds its place in every Romanian cookbook. It takes nearly an hour to cook. The basic ingredients for this dish are corn flour sauce and the stuffing. For the sauce, you will need 350 grams of corn flour, half a teaspoon of salt, a litre and a half of water. For the stuffing, you will need 4 eggs, 50 grams of butter, and 300 grams of cheese. The cheese should ideally be of two types, and the most suitable types are bellows cheese ("branza de burduf") and "telemea", a salty cheese. The first step involves boiling the eggs and cooking the soft corn flour sauce. You have to use an earthen pot, a symbol of authentic Romanian cuisine, to get the original flavor. But first, you need to immerse the pot in water for about 15 minutes and butter up the inside of the pot adequately. This will ensure that the cheese balls do not stick to the pot when you cook them. Sat, 08 Mar 2008 17:12:00 +0100 The health benefits, aphrodisiac qualities and incomparable taste of chocolate have been passionately championed for centuries. And if there's one thing that all chocolate lovers agree on, it is the pure pleasure one gets from eating it in its myriad forms.
Cocoa has been used by generations of cooks around the world to create a wealth of sweets, cakes and biscuits, truffles, drinks and glorious desserts, and I would like to begin your chocolate initiation with cakes. Why not try a grandfather's cake (torta del nonno) to impress your dinner guests? These are not for the faint-hearted, neither are hot puddings, which are indulgently rich, and suitable for only the most hardened chocolate fiends. If there's anything better than receiving chocolates from someone, it must surely be to know that they are homemade. Truffles and sweets are the ultimate sin, so allow yourself to have a go at some decadent Italian chocolate truffles - it's up to you to decide whether you give them away... Sat, 08 Mar 2008 17:09:00 +0100 The capital of Italy, Rome is truly one of the most idyllic places to dine in Europe. Most people have heard of the saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." Yes, you can still have your pizzas and lasagnas but why? There's something to please every palate, so be adventurous.
Every region boasts of its specialties. However, in Rome, a meal usually starts with bruschetta and in Rome, try the ammazzavampiri. If you feel very, and I mean very, adventurous, try the pajata sauce. What's pajata sauce, eat first, ask later. Rome is also well known for its oxtail stew, lamb ribs and not forgetting, "jewish" artichokes which is basically deep fried artichokes. A stone's throw away from St Peter's Cathedral is one of the most popular and reasonably priced restaurants in Rome must be Ad Hoc, located at Via di Ripetta, 43. The cozy ambience with a wine list of more than 200 local labels will set very nicely with anyone. Must *trys* are the carbonara sauce with porcini and the famous white ragu sauce. Prices are reasonable ranging from 25 to 35 euros per diner. Sat, 08 Mar 2008 17:05:00 +0100 Affluent Knights bridge has many up-market restaurants, appealing to all tastes and flavours and is also home to the infamous Lorenzo's; an Italian restaurant regularly frequented by celebrities. Many of those establishments offer Mediterranean-inspired fare and also specialise in fish dishes, but some of them are facing a salmon shortage due to a mini-marine disaster off the coast of Northern Ireland which has resulted in the loss of over 100,000 salmon.
Ironically, the cause of the disaster is a tiny, purplish jellyfish which normally inhabits Mediterranean waters and frequently stings swimmers. Billions of the Pelagia Nocticula, colloquially known as mauve stingers attacked the salmon in their cages and there was nothing that could be done to save any of the fish. Their total loss has cost the farm owners Northern Salmon at least £1million, threatening the entire future of the company. Dismayed managing director John Russell, who only joined the company three days before the disaster said: "I've never seen anything like it in 30 years of fish farming. It was unprecedented, absolutely amazing. The sea was red with the jellyfish and we were unable to do a thing about it, absolutely nothing." |
