There is a growing interest in the graphics, vision, and manufacturing communities in building an inexpensive device capable of digitizing the shape and external appearance of objects for transmission, display, and numerically controlled fabrication. Applications for such a device include product design, fast prototyping, reverse engineering, and digitizing of shapes for the visual simulation, animation, and entertainment industries.

Toward this end, we have been developing a laser-based scanning system capable of generating an occlusion-free low-level geometric description of the externally visible surfaces of an object. Here is a flow chart of the process. (This flow chart is somewhat out of date.) The crucial step in this process is the merging of multiple range images, each of which captures only one side of the object, in order to produce a seamless description of the entire object. The representations we have investigated for this step include dense polygon meshes and 3D voxel arrays with an occupancy function at each voxel. Both representations eventually lead to a dense polygon mesh. We have also been exploring methods for fitting curved surface patches to these dense meshes. Future investigations include automatically determining the next best view and acquiring surface reflectivity.

As an application of this technology, we have embarked on a multi-year project to create a high-quality 3D archive of the sculptures of Michelangelo for scholarly, educational, and commercial purposes. In other words, the 3D fax machine project has morphed into the Digital Michelangelo Project.

Before you try choosing a type of facsimile want to buy it's better if you are back to the meaning of fax. A fax machine is a telecopying machine that electronically transmits written or graphic material over telephone lines to create a "hard copy" of the sent message.

Facsimiles have become indispensable in every office, bank, business centre, educational institution, industry and other corporate places. They make it very easy for you to send paperwork across town, country or even to any part of the world, all within seconds!

Fax machine usually transmit scanned images of documents via telephone lines. This includes an automatic receiving function that allows the users to store a match pattern suitable for the connected line. A built-in high-speed digital modem automatically selects the highest modem speed (28,800–2400 bits/s) common to both facsimile units. Facsimiles have become extremely prevalent in offices after the adoption of Group 3 digital standards in 1980 by the CCITT (International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee). Facsimile devices that produce higher-resolution images or colour and grey-scale images are also introduced.

A modern office fax machine scans a page to make an electronic representation of its text or graphics, compresses the data to save transmission time and transmits it to another fax machine or computer emulating a fax machine.

Internet faxing now is at the hand of everyone with free Internet fax services, these are services that help you send faxes over the Internet without paying a cent. Now you don't have an excuse for not taking advantage of Internet!

Why Internet Fax?

Internet faxing has a lot of benefits over traditional faxing. To start, you don't need special machines and the supplies associated with it. The traditional fax machine has quickly become a thing of the past as we start to make everything on line.

Internet Faxing also allows you to send and receive crisper, clearer documents at the speed of light. Something that old technology wasn't able to do?

Why Free Internet Fax Services?

It may be true what people say: "there's nothing really free in this world". Free Internet fax services may not cost you money, but when you send them, the receiver always get a page of advertising first. This may not be a big deal for occasional personal faxing, but for business faxing, it is something that could hurt your company's image. Also these free services don't allow you to receive faxes, only to send them.

Could Paid Internet Services Be What I'm Looking For?

Paid services besides letting you send and receive faxes, will also give you more control and give you a series of benefits that you might find useful like fax broadcasting, and complete tracking of documents.

In the end it is up to you what choice to take. However rest assured that Internet faxing services are here to stay.

Sending a fax from your computer requires a fax modem and that your operating system be configured to allow you to send and receive faxes.

Instruction steps:

To Send a Fax From Fax Software
  1. Prepare the document that you want to fax.
  2. Prepare a fax cover sheet, if desired.
  3. Open your fax software - such as Microsoft Fax or Microsoft Exchange.
  4. Look for an icon or menu command that allows you to send a fax - such as Send New and Send Fax. Click on that item.
  5. Follow instructions for entering the fax number of the recipient and any other requested information. Be sure to include area codes and long-distance information if needed.
  6. Indicate whether you wish to send a cover sheet.
  7. When asked to attach the file, follow instructions to attach the file that you want to fax.
  8. When ready, click Send. The fax will begin to compile the information and, when ready, will dial the remote fax machine.
  9. When the connection is made, the fax will be sent.

To Fax From Your Word Processing Program

  1. Some software products, such as Microsoft Word, allow you to fax a document without opening your fax software.
  2. Open the document that you want to fax.
  3. From the File menu, select Print. The Print window opens.
  4. Instead of printing to your default printer, look for an option that allows you to Print to Fax. Select this option and click Print.
  5. You will be asked to provide the recipient's fax number and other assorted information as with a fax program.
  6. The fax message compiles, the modem dials. If the connection is made with the other modem, the fax will be sent.

Just as the name suggests, an email or Internet fax is using your email system and the Internet to send and receive faxes. Anytime. Anywhere. Instead of using a fax machine and an extra fax phone line - you use your existing email system and an Internet Fax Service Provider.

The most popular Internet Fax Services are MyFax, eFax, Send2Fax and TrustFax. Most of these email fax providers will charge you a fee for their services. You use your email or a Web Interface (online site)to send and receive faxes. Some providers have a software desktop application download, which you can place on your desktop to use to send your faxes - most, if not all of these email fax services will work with Windows Outlook and Windows Office.

Internet or eMail Fax is easy, quick, and accessible anywhere you travel. Plus - no start up fees, no extra phone line, no fax machine and no more paper jams!

Use this guide to find more information on the different Internet Fax Providers.

There are many services that will let you use the Internet to send faxes. Some are free while others are pay services. Some services require that you can send and receive electronic mail, or that you have Web access. Others require you to install special software on your computer.

Some services allow you to receive faxes, too. When you receive a fax at a special number, it is delivered via e-mail address or available for viewing on the Web. Some commercial services include bulk faxing and other special features.

HP 1040/1050 Fax Series User Guide

Those needing basic functions in a budget-priced desktop fax machine will appreciate the capabilities of Hewlett-Packard's 1040 Fax. This machine will give many SOHO environments plenty of faxing power.

The 1040 Fax can send documents at speeds up to 10 ppm, which is not at the top of the market, but will work well for most offices. The 50-sheet paper tray probably is not large enough for a busy office that receives a lot of faxes. If the 1040 Fax runs out of paper, it can store up to 100 pages in memory. This desktop fax machine has a 10-page automatic document feeder as well.

The 1040 Fax uses inkjet printing, but it only can accept black ink cartridges; it has no color printing capabilities.

Like most desktop fax machines, the 1040 Fax can work as a makeshift copier, running at speeds up to 1.5 ppm.

Here you can download HP 1040/1050 Fax Series User Guide, below is the content list.

As you go about planning your event, there's one fact that you're painfully aware of: the success of any event depends on its attendees. You've probably spent a lot of time organizing things like the catering and the decor of your big bash. Without the right kind of turnout, however, all of your efforts in these areas could be in vain.

Does this thought strike a chord of dread in your heart? It shouldn't. There are things you can do to help ensure that you get the kind of crowd you're hoping for. One method that has proven quite successful is voice mail broadcast.

Take a Personal Approach with Voicemail Broadcast
There's nothing more personal than a message left on someone's answering machine. With voice mail broadcast, you'll be able to leave everyone on your guest list a personal invitation. Email invitations may get consigned to the junk mail folder, and mailed invitations may be discarded unopened. Reach out via voice mail broadcast and you can be secure in the knowledge that your warm invitation will be met with an audience.

The Integrated Notification System is designed to take care of all your IVR and communication needs. It allows you to send messages to pagers, mobile phones (SMS), fax machines, as voice file or as E-mail. At the same time you can configure the application to handle all your incoming calls. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) applications for CT (Computer Telephony), where the caller uses the phone keypad to enter values, can be created through the graphical script designer.

Applications like Fax-on-demand, SMS-on-demand, Voice Mail and other IVR systems are possible without any programming. A simple voice modem or voice board is all you need. Voice files can be recorded or created through a text-to-speech engine. You can also design interactive scripts to dynamically react on incoming SMS or e-mail messages. Scripts like SMS-to-Email or EMail-to-SMS are only some of the possibilities.

A fax (short for facsimile and sometimes called telecopying) is the telephonic transmission of scanned-in printed material (text or images), usually to a telephone number associated with a printer or other output device. The original document is scanned with a fax machine, which treats the contents (text or images) as a single fixed graphic image, converting it into a bitmap. In this digital form, the information is transmitted as electrical signals through the telephone system. The receiving fax machine reconverts the coded image and prints a paper copy of the document.

Almost all modems manufactured today are capable of sending and receiving fax data. Fax/modem software generates fax signals directly from disk files or the screen. Even if a document is text only, it is treated by the computer as a scanned image and is transmitted to the receiver as a bitmap. Faxing a message online works well if the recipient wants only to read the message. However, if the document requires editing, it must be converted into ASCII text by an OCR (optical character recognition) program, or it must be retyped manually into the computer. A more efficient method of sending documents that require modification is through the e-mail system. E-mail files are already ASCII text so they can be edited immediately in any text editor or word processing program.

The Internet now provides a new and cheaper way to send faxes in some cases. A number of free and commercial companies provide arrangements for using the Internet rather than the public telephone system for most or part of the path to the fax point. Some services also provide the ability to broadcast a fax to multiple addresses.

"Keep hearing about how hard it is for faxes to work through VOIP". Here is prepared a top 5 list of things you can do to make sure your faxes have the best chance of going through.

* Set your baud rate to 9600 and turn off Error Correction Mode. The slower your Fax goes, the more likely it is to go through without errors. Most VOIP providers are unable to support the default baud of 33600 baud due to the amount of data that has to go through. Error Correction Mode was designed for faxing PSTN to PSTN. Voice over IP often has extra noise added due to jitter instabilities in the connection as it travels from one fax to another. This causes false positives for Error Correction Mode because it will cause the fax to loop over and over trying to fix these noise errors, when it can’t be fixed. This will end in a communication error usually.

* Use a provider that supports T.38 - T.38 is an audio codec designed for Faxing over VOIP. it allows for more detail and better looking images as well as stability by creating redundancy in the RTP stream.

* Set your packetization to 10 milliseconds or less. The more header there is in the stream, the less likely jitter and instabilities in your internet connection are going to cause a synchronization error. (You may need to contact your provider to make this happen if your box is locked, such as if you use Vonage.)

* Keep on top of your ISP. Stability in your internet connection are paramount in making sure that faxes are successful. Speed tests can help you track this. Look for an advanced speed test that offers more than just and upload and download speed. A personal favorite of mine is located at MyVoipSpeed (Note: An up to date Java version is required) which is really nice because once you’re done, you can click on the detailed analysis link and then call up your ISP and give them the URL for the test so they can see what’s going on.

* When all else fails, call your VOIP provider. There may be issues in the routing of your calls that are causing problems. Only your VOIP provider’s call processing team will be able to fix this kind of thing. Have your provider test from a PSTN line and then their own VOIP line. If they can send through PSTN but not their own VOIP line, it’s a routing issue on their own end.

* Bonus Tip! Don’t even think about faxing using Voice over IP on a satellite or wireless connection. These kinds of connections are too unpredictable, and add a huge amount of latency that will make it impossible for fax machines to sync up properly.

The modern fax (or facsimile) machine became popular during the mid-1970s. The machine was revolutionary for businesses because it enabled companies to transmit information via telephone lines quickly and easily. While email, scanners and digital cameras have replaced some of the functions of a fax machine, the machines are by no means obsolete.

Step 1
Check the fax machine plug. After you check the fax machine power supply, check to make certain that its telephone cord is plugged into a phone jack.

Step 2
Insert the document that you wish to fax into the "outgoing" fax tray. Machines differ, but there will usually be an icon or picture directing the user as to where to place the outgoing document. Most fax machines require the user to insert the documents face down, but check your specific machine.
Step 3
Dial the phone number to which you wish to send the document. In some offices, you may need to dial a number such as "9" for an outside line. You may also need to include the area or country code.

Step 4
Wait for the receiving fax machine to "answer." You will hear a sound like a computer modem: a series of high-pitched squeals and static-like noises. Depending on your fax machine, you may have to press the "Start" button to send your fax, or your model may automatically start sending the fax by itself.

Step 5
Look at the fax machine display console. It shows if pages have gone through successfully or if you need to resend a fax due to an error. Generally, when a fax has gone through successfully the machine will beep or display a "success" message.

Step 6
Stock your fax machine with plenty of paper in the "incoming" fax tray. That way if you receive a fax, it instantly prints on the paper provided. Even if you are out of paper, your fax machine will keep received faxes in its memory, and it will print them when you finally do stock the machine with paper.

Step 7
Note whether your fax machine has its own dedicated phone line. If so, it should receive faxes automatically. If you use one phone line for both your fax machine and a regular telephone, you may need to press "Start" to process an incoming fax. You can recognize an incoming fax easily; if you pick up the phone, you will hear the same modem sounds as when you are sending a fax.

If you're running Windows XP, you can finally donate that old fax machine to a local charity and use the desk space for something more valuable—like a box of doughnuts. An easy-to-use fax service is built into Windows XP so you can send and receive faxes from your computer.

There are a number of advantages to moving to a Windows XP-based fax system, the main one being no wasted paper. No need to print documents before faxing them. You can read, save, delete, or attach incoming faxes to e-mail—all without using a single piece of paper. Of course, you can print them too.

Although you don't need a fax machine, you'll need a phone line, a modem, and a scanner to send and receive faxes from your computer. For faxing, the modem and scanner don't have to be anything special. Even a 33.6 bps modem will dispatch a multi-page letter in a minute or two. As to the scanner, faxes are sent in black and white and usually at a default resolution of no better than 150 X 150 dpi. Any working scanner can manage that.

The fax service isn't automatically installed in Windows XP. To install the fax component:

1.Open Control Panel, and click Add or Remove Programs.

2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. Select the Fax Services check box, and then click Next. The Windows Component Wizard takes care of the rest.

Note: If you don't have a modem already installed, take care of that now. Make sure the modem is connected to a phone line and the phone line is connected to a working jack. (You'd be surprised how often folks overlook these details.)

After the fax component is installed, the next step is configuring it. You configure the Fax service in the Fax Console, the center for faxing tasks. To configure the Fax Console:

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, point to Fax, and then click Fax Console.

2. On the Tools menu in Fax Console, click Configure Fax, which starts the Fax Configuration Wizard. Click Next to start configuring your fax information.

3. On the Sender Information page, include your name or your business name and your fax number. Everything else on the page is optional.

4. On the Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes page, your modem will be selected, unless you have more than one, in which case, select the right one. Specify send and receive options, and whether you'll manually answer incoming faxes or answer automatically when received.

5. On the Transmitting Subscriber Identification (TSID) and Called Subscriber Identification (CSID) pages, enter your business name and fax number. These fields really matter when you're running special fax routing software. Most software of this kind depends on TSIDs to determine where to direct an incoming fax. See How to Enable and Configure the Fax Service in Windows XP for more information.

6. On the Routing Options page, specify how incoming faxes will be handled. All faxes are stored automatically in the Fax Console, but you can also print a copy or store a copy in a local folder or on your network.

When you want to change or verify any of these settings, simply run the Fax Configuration Wizard again. To open the wizard, on the Tools menu of the Fax Console, click Configure Fax.

Opera browser features a brilliant messaging client that includes e-mail client (POP3/IMAP), news reader (NNTP) and feed reader (RSS/Atom). The messaging client provides a convenient way of keeping track of information about people you communicate with.

However, if you are using Opera e-mail client, or just made an attempt to switch to it, you may have noticed that Opera has no particular support for importing contacts from other e-mail software. For example, migrating contacts from Microsoft Outlook is not easy.

In order to import your Microsoft Outlook contacts to Opera, you may need to use a tool that will save you a lot of time retyping the names and addresses from one address book into another one.

coOpera is such a tool. It helps to convert your Microsoft Outlook contacts to Opera format. All you need to do is export your Microsoft Outlook contacts to a CSV file, choose the contacts you would like to convert, and finally, import converted contacts to Opera browser. Everything else will be done automatically for you!

coOpera migrates all information that an Opera contact can store: contact name, e-mail addresses, postal addresses, phone and fax numbers, notes and website address.

coOpera is absolutely free for personal, non-commercial use.

coOpera works on Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista systems and requires Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer. The software has been tested to work with Opera 9 and Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002/2003.
