Fri, 05 Dec 2008 12:41:15 +0100 Buffalo Bulls vs. Ball State Cardinals
The line: It opened favoring Ball State by two touchdowns but has risen between a half point and point. The total of 62 has stayed steady.
What’s at stake: Unfortunately for Ball State, not as much as it would like. An unbeaten season is a goal, but a BCS bowl won’t happen with the Cards third in line behind Utah and Boise State among unbeaten non-BCS teams.
There was talk of an all-BSU bowl matching Boise State and Ball State in the Humanitarian Bowl, but the Cards didn’t want to play a bowl game in Boise State’s home stadium. Thus, Ball State seems headed to either the Motor City Bowl or GMAC Bowl. Buffalo appears targeted for the International Bowl.
How they got to Detroit’s Ford Field: The MAC West champion Cardinals had their first perfect regular season since 1965. The East champion Bulls won the school’s first-ever division title. It’s the first MAC title game for both. The Cardinals and Bulls will become the 10th different teams to play in the MAC title game in the past seven seasons.
Series history: Ball State has won all six meetings. Last year, the Cards led 28-0 at halftime on the way to a 49-14 victory (since that loss, Buffalo is 9-5 in the MAC). Ball State produced 507 yards of total offense to Buffalo's 219 yards. This will be the first neutral-site meeting.
Offense, offense, offense: Can Buffalo handle the best one-two punch in the MAC in QB Nate Davis and RB MiQuale Lewis? No teams have yet.
Davis was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year this week. He has completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,095 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, good for sixth in the nation in passing efficiency. He also has run for 318 yards and four touchdowns on 49 carries.
Lewis is the MAC leader with 1,570 yards rushing to go along with 234 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns. He ranks fourth in the country in rushing and second in touchdowns and 100-yard games (10).
Buffalo is no slouch on offense behind RB James Starks and QB Drew Willy. Starks is sixth in the nation in rushing (122.6 ypg) and second in the MAC. He has 344 rushing yards fewer than Lewis but played in two fewer games due to injury. Starks has five runs of 50 yards or more this season.
Willy is fourth in the MAC in passing at 240.4 yards per game. In the past 18 games, he has 33 touchdown passes and just five interceptions. Receiver Naaman Roosevelt leads the MAC in receiving yards with 1,196 and 10 touchdown catches.
Ball State leads the MAC in total offense (455.8 yards per game) and scoring (37.7); Buffalo is seventh in total offense (387.2) and third in scoring (30.2).
A few numbers: While the teams seem to be even on offense, BSU has a big statistical edge on defense. The Cardinals finished first in fewest points allowed (16.7) and fourth in total defense (351.8 ypg) in the conference. Buffalo was seventh in points allowed (27.8) and 11th in total defense (400.4 ypg).
Ball State has won 11 of its 12 games this season by double-digit margins and has not trailed at the half. Buffalo has three wins in overtime and another by two points in regulation this season.
Don’t count on penalties costing BSU. It ranks first in the nation for fewest penalties (2.5) and fewest penalty yards (25.33) per game.
For comparison’s sake against the MAC’s two other best teams, Ball State beat Central Michigan by a touchdown and Western Michigan by 23 points. Both were in the season’s final two weeks. Buffalo missed a potential game-winning field goal on the final play against CMU and the following week coughed up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter to WMU.

Fri, 05 Dec 2008 12:40:19 +0100 FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, speeding and driving without insurance after being pulled over by police last weekend.
Ellis, the Jets' longest-tenured player, was stopped last Saturday in Hanover, N.J., a few miles from the team's training facility after speeding, the Daily Record of Morris County reported on its Web site Thursday.
Capt. Shawn Waldron, the information officer for the Hanover Township Police, wasn't available for comment Thursday night and wasn't due back at the station until Friday morning.
Ellis played the day after the arrest in New York's 34-17 loss to Denver, and a team spokesman confirmed that he will play Sunday at San Francisco.
"I apologize to my family, the fans and the organization," Ellis said in a statement issued by the team Thursday night. "As a captain, I set a poor and selfish example for my teammates, as well as all NFL players. Although this is a pending legal matter, I understand that I have to be responsible for my actions."
This is believed to be Ellis' first offense, which means he won't be suspended by the league, but will be enrolled in the league's substance abuse program.
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement that he and coach Eric Mangini both spoke to Ellis about the incident.
"He is disappointed with himself and has apologized for his actions," Tannenbaum said. "Personal conduct is important and an area that we stress to the entire organization. Shaun has been a leader on this team and I am confident that he will handle this in the appropriate fashion. The legal process will run its course and the league will handle this matter."
Ellis has enjoyed a resurgence this season with a team-leading seven sacks, his most in four years. He was the 12th overall pick out of Tennessee in the 2000 draft and has 60½ career sacks.
It's the latest legal incident involving players from the New York-area NFL teams.
Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the right thigh at a nightclub last Saturday morning and was charged with illegal weapons possession, a felony that requires a mandatory minimum 3½ years and a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted. The Giants also fined and suspended Burress for four games, and placed him on the reserve non-football injury list, which means he won't be back for the playoffs.
Giants offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie was charged with drunken driving after a traffic stop on Nov. 14. A Breathalyzer test found McKenzie's blood-alcohol level was above New Jersey's legal limit of 0.08. He wasn't suspended by the team.

Fri, 05 Dec 2008 00:38:18 +0100 Time to move on from football for me and into NBA, NHL.
Here are my records to date:
NFL/NCAAFB = 60-40 (+11.5 units), 12% ROI for year
may look at more NFL plays, NCAA done for the year
NBA = 19-9 (+8.3 units)
NHL = 3-6 (-2 units)
The NHL is a tough sport to handicap, but it can provide some great value plays on a regular basis. It is one of the few sports you can bet a flat strategy, have a record around .500 and still come out ahead.
Here are my picks for tonight:
PIT
BOS -1.5
SJ -1.5
Good Luck

In general, I lean and study defense in the NBA, but you have to be careful for misleading stats.
Good luck all

Thu, 04 Dec 2008 23:55:12 +0100 Missed my post last week due to the Holidays, good thing too because i didnt do so well. Tough week picking, but time to lose some of these weaker teams
YTD (13-10)( +11 Units)
* NFL WEEK 14*
Cincinnati +14 @ Indianapolis
3 units
Too many points going to Cincy this week. They have nothing to play for, but Indys D is banged up even more with Bracket now out, and the offense just isnt the same as it was last year. Cincy covers
Chicago -6.5 vs. Jacksonville
3 units
Easy, Jags packed it in for the season, and lost all respect for their head coach after sitting their Pro Bowl LB. Chicago has something to play for, and with Minny playing a bad team, Bears know they have to win this game at home. Chicago by two touchdowns!
Jets -4 @ San Francisco
3 units
Jets are coming off a tough lose, and cannot afford to lose any more games. They are in division that is up in the air, and I think they come out and hand it to the Niners. Favre gets things back together for the Jets and with a steady pass/run game against the Niners, Jets win by 7 or more.
Green Bay -6 vs. Houston
2 units
Houston has a short week, and GB lost two games in a row, but are still in the hunt for the playoffs. GB wins at home while a rusty Schaub goes against a tough secondary.
Philadelphia +8 @ Gmen
2 units
Too much craziness going on in NY, and I know, the Gmen have been facing controversy all year long, but this time its affecting more than just one player. The Eagles are playing for their jobs right now, and I believe give NY a run for their money this game. I dont know if they can pull this win off, but its going to be a close one!
Small 1 Unit plays
New England -4.5...Patriots never lose two in a row, Pats win by 7+
Carolina -3...Carolina is great at home
Any input??!! Love to hear some...:uzi:
Thu, 04 Dec 2008 23:33:21 +0100 Oakland +9.5 Three Units
and Oakland money line +360 1/2 unit!
Leaning over in this one too!!
