News, views and blues from a free Canadian! Sat, 11 Oct 2008 23:16:22 +0200 Whatever Tarek, just get me another beer: ![]() I spent my day with Canadian author Tarek Fatah who I have been a fan of for a number of years. He is an amazing person and also as funny as hell. If you haven't got it already I really suggest picking up his book - Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State. It is required reading... Tomorrow we are up to no good again as we are hanging with some guy named 'Mubin'.. Stay tuned for that one! Sat, 11 Oct 2008 23:09:44 +0200 In Switzerland, the land of neutrality pacts and chocolate bars made in Alpen meadows, a new kind of revolution is underway: Ethics in the natural world. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the ethics being considered are based on whether it is "right" to experiment with plants:Dr. Keller recently sought government permission to do a field trial of genetically modified wheat that has been bred to resist a fungus. He first had to debate the finer points of plant dignity with university ethicists. Then, in a written application to the government, he tried to explain why the planned trial wouldn't "disturb the vital functions or lifestyle" of the plants. He eventually got the green light. It later goes on to wonder aloud whether a carrot carries an ethical dilemma posed when considering peeling, chopping, or being dropped into boiling water. The obvious question that arises is, do plants have feelings? And more important than that, do broccoli hate me when I eat them? As well, Swiss lawmakers recently ensured "social animals" in the country are protected. "Prospective dog owners must take a four-hour course on pet care before they can buy a canine companion, while anglers must learn to catch fish humanely." Fish tanks, for instance, must not be transparent on all sides. The fish must have some form of "shelter" from prying eyes. I suppose my first response to this is: they don't give people a four-minute course, let alone a four-hour one in having human children. And they want to teach people proper canine care? My second thought is, how would one decide the parameters of tugging a steel hook through the mouth of a fish in the most humane manner possible? Is not the word "humane" a little strange when used in context with the treatment of plants and animals? I mean, let's be honest here. We're scarcely on the radar of compassion when it comes to humans dying in great numbers in lands faraway; I find it interesting Switzerland is finding ways to occupy their time with bioethics. x/p Unambig Sat, 11 Oct 2008 22:56:34 +0200 I'm ready for you and I hope your ready for me! ![]() {mp3}Eddie_Martin_Blues_With_Feeling{/mp3} Saturday night is when I come out to play and there is a communal gathering scheduled at The Fiddler's Green starting around 6PM -- Everyone welcome. Fri, 10 Oct 2008 04:50:30 +0200 ![]() As the United States Treasury contemplates flooding the banks with cash, and mulling the possibility of nationalizing assets and financial institutions, the former [or current?] communist country of China could stave off the complete fall of the American superpower: 9%! It's amazing what an economy can do without any restraint whatsoever. Meanwhile, the 1989 U.S. debt sign has run out of digits on their scoreboard. The clock rolled over $10 trillion and will now require two more zeros in the likely event the U.S. reaches a state of zenith in debt: One quadrillion. So what's up with the rest of the country? Thu, 09 Oct 2008 19:51:52 +0200
24 year old Ethiopian refugee Gideon George Antonatos was given a five year sentence for a violent rape of a Nunavut woman in 2006. He gets a two-for-one credit for the 27 months he has already spent in custody and so he will be out in six months with three years probabtion. He also faces a deportation order. Of interest is that none of his prior convictions such as assaulting a police officer, theft, drug possession and breaching court-ordered conditions along with seven misconduct reports at the Innes Road jail where he has been held were taken into consideration because they were of a none 'sexual nature' and the rape was an 'isolated incident'. He has been in Canada since 2000 and justice has apparently been served. Thu, 09 Oct 2008 19:28:06 +0200 The Beer: Welcome Quatre-Centieme a stong ale on lees by Unibroue in Chambly ,Quebec. It is commemorative beer brewed to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec on July 8, 1608. Clearly a beer brewed for celebration and that's what we're doing here today. She pours golden made slighly hazy by the the lees. A bright white fluffy long lasting head was created from the pour. Sweet bready malt to the nose. She tasted of buttery pouch tobbacco and malty over ripe cantaloupe. Packaged in a corked 750ml bottle and contains 7.5% alcohol. 3.5 feathers out of 5 but you can always get a second opinion.
