Capture those special moments with the DCR-TRV18 MiniDV camcorder. The new MiniDV camcorder from Sony creates high-quality visuals, thanks to the 800,000 pixel CCD (which gives a horizontal resolution of up to 500 lines) and the Carl Zeiss 10x optical zoom lens. The Super SteadyShot mode will make sure your visuals stay still, even if your hand doesn't.

Using the USB streaming feature, the camcorder can also function as a Webcam. In addition to this, video footage can be downloaded directly to a PC via a USB port. This material can then be edited on your PC using the supplied software. Once edited, your masterpiece can be shared with the whole world via the Internet.

The DCR-TRV18 includes the ability to record straight to MemoryStick. As with the DCR-TRV340, you can create movies by using MPEG; your recording time is now only limited by the size of MemoryStick.

Add to these already impressive features a 2.5-inch 123,000 pixel LCD screen, manual focus, 120x digital zoom, playback zoom and Super NightShot mode for filming in very low light and you've got yourself an impressive camcorder.

If you want to buy this digital camcorder, I recommend you to do it at Amazon. Buying is easy, shipping is fast, plus it has really low prices and a very good customer service.

The Sony DCR-TRV17 is a quality consumer-grade compact MiniDV digital camcorder. Packed with a 10x optical zoom and 120x digital zoom, the camcorder also features digital image stabilization. You can shoot and watch your video using either the color EVF or huge 3.5-inch LCD viewfinder.

Like most digital camcorders, the DCR-TRV17 is equipped with an IEEE 1394 connection (also known as i.Link and FireWire) for digital image transfer, allowing video editing on a properly equipped home computer. In addition, all analog ports on the TRV17 have analog to digital converters built in. With this feature, anyone upgrading from older analog equipment can transfer their old memories to new digital tapes.

If you own a TV equipped with Sony's Super LaserLink feature (or purchase an optional Super LaserLink attachment for your TV), playback is especially easy. You can just aim the DCR-TRV17 at the TV from up to 26 feet away, press "play," and enjoy your videos without having to connect any wires.

The DCR-TRV17 also doubles as a digital still camera, recording photos onto an included 4 MB Memory Stick at a resolution of up to 640 x 480 pixels. Digital program editing allows for easy dubbing of 20 selected scenes from one digital camcorder to another, or to an analog VCR. Three different white-balance settings help optimize color. The DCR-TRV17 includes a microphone input, as well as an intelligent shoe for select Sony accessories. Also included are an AC power adapter, lithium-ion battery, remote, stereo AV cable, and lens cap.

If you want to buy this digital camcorder, I recommend you to do it at Amazon. Buying is easy, shipping is fast, plus it has really low prices and a very good customer service.

You can find digital camcorders for slightly less than the Sony DCR-TRV140, but you won't get Sony's quality and extensive feature list. Captured video proved to be of high quality, whether we viewed it on our TV or transferred it to our PC via the speedy FireWire connection or USB.

The USB connection can also be used for setting up the TRV140 as a Webcam via their USB streaming technology. It took some playing around with the Pixela Image Mixer software before we could get the device working properly. In general, a dedicated Webcam would be a better device for this purpose.

But as a digital camcorder, we were quite pleased with the TRV140. Its 20x optical zoom (and 560x digital zoom) allowed for extreme close-ups, while the Super NightShot infrared mode allowed us to record in complete darkness. The mode automatically adjusted the shutter speed during night recording, resulting in a brighter, sharper image than Sony's normal NightShot mode.

The TRV140 isn't without faults. It won't accept inputted video or play back old Hi-8 or 8mm tapes recorded in analog mode, and the battery lasted only about an hour during our tests. But you can purchase Sony's optional NP-FM91 battery pack, which extends battery life to over 10 hours.

The TRV140 has the typical boxiness of the Handycam, but it weighs only a little more than two pounds, with battery. It's comfortable to hold, and its button layout will prove quite familiar to previous Handycam users. It also comes with a remote control for handling the camera's functions from a distance.

Selling for under $500, the TRV140 is a great digital camcorder for users who intend to edit video on their PCs for distribution to the Web for or burning to CD or DVD. --J. Curtis

Pros:

  • 20x optical zoom
  • Super NightShot mode
  • High-quality digital video

Cons:

  • Somewhat short battery life
  • Can't play back analog Hi-8 or 8mm

The Sony DCR-TRV120 uses the Digital 8 format, which digitally records images onto standard Hi8 tapes. If you're upgrading from an 8mm or Hi8 camera, this format gives you the combined benefits of digital image quality and backwards compatibility with your old tapes.

A 25x optical zoom and 450x digital zoom will bring your shots closer, and Sony SteadyShot image stabilization technology will help to keep shakes and wobbles out of your video. For audio, the DCR-TRV120 offers 16-bit PCM digital stereo with 12-bit dubbing. If you prefer to shoot in the 16:9 widescreen ratio, this is also an option. To compose your films, you can use either the standard eyepiece viewfinder or a 2.5-inch swivel color LCD display.

With Sony's LaserLink feature, playback can be a snap--you just aim the DCR-TRV120 at the LaserLink receiver on select Sony TVs from up to 16 feet away, press play, and enjoy your videos directly on your TV--without wires or cassette adapters.

If you're planning to digitally edit your videos on your computer, the Sony includes an industry standard IEEE 1394 port (also known as iLink and FireWire) for image transfer, and a Control-L (LANC) interface for connection to editing equipment.

Sony's Super NightShot infrared system lets you capture footage in two modes. In standard NightShot mode the camera uses available visible and infrared light to illuminate the subject. With Super NightShot, an infrared LED on the front of the camera acts like an infrared spotlight: to the naked eye, it just looks like a standard red LED, but it produces enough infrared light to effectively illuminate the area in front of the camera.

The camera includes numerous extra features, including 14 picture effects and a five-mode audio-video fader, end search (which automatically forwards your tape to the end of the last footage shot), edit search, seven-mode program auto exposure, pass-through analog AV inputs, and an intelligent shoe for accessories.

If you want to buy this digital camcorder, I recommend you to do it at Amazon. Buying is easy, shipping is fast, plus it has really low prices and a very good customer service.

Digital program editing allows for easy dubbing of 20 selected scenes from one digital camcorder to another, or to an analog VCR. Three different white-balance settings help optimize color. DCR-PC330 MiniDV Handycam camcorder is the industry's first single-CCD (charge coupled device), 3.31-megapixel model, affording customers the highest quality combination of digital video and still camera optics. The new DCR-PC330 MiniDV Handycam model has an Advanced HADTM (hole accumulated diode) CCD imager, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens and a new advanced primary color filter, which together create outstanding video and digital photographs.Beyond Sony's standard advanced features such as Super NightShot infrared system for shooting video in total darkness and the Super SteadyShot system for image stabilization, this new model also has a new smooth interval record feature, enabling smooth time-lapse recording.Along with a 2.5-inch hybrid touch panel liquid crystal display (LCD) for an easy-access, easy-to-see menu, the new 3-D user menu is customizable into a Personal Menu. The DCR-PC3 builds on the success of Sony's diminutive PC1 camcorder by adding a touch screen for easier use. Like the older PC1, this camera includes a crystal-clear 12x optical-zoom Carl Zeiss lens matched to a 680,000-pixel Super HAD low-noise CCD sensor. Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization adjusts optics inside the camera to compensate for hand-induced shakes. The camera features Sony's NightShot 0-lux shooting system, which uses the infrared portion of the spectrum to shoot in near-dark situations. To compose your videos, you can use either the standard eyepiece viewfinder or a 2.5-inch swivel color LCD screen.

An iLink (IEEE 1394) port allows quick and easy transfers of footage to a computer or to other camcorders, and a LanC plug allows connection to video editing equipment.

In digital still camera mode, the PC3 captures images at a resolution of 640 x 480--great for e-mail or images you're putting up on the Internet. Images are stored on Sony's proprietary Memory Stick cards, and a 4 MB card is included.

Sony has taken the time to combine an enormously disparate set of functions into one startlingly potent package: the DCR-PC120BT. Not only do you get the high-resolution still mode (the images top out at about 1.4 megapixels, good for a camcorder), you also get an MPEG movie mode, Bluetooth wireless networking, and an MPEG movie mode. Beyond these extras, you do get the standard set of digital camcorder amenities, such as the 10x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD, and IEEE 1394 port.

The extras that Sony has packed into the PC120BT are mostly the standard set of extras. However, it's the addition of Bluetooth that truly sets this camcorder apart. With Bluetooth, you can wirelessly connect to any PC equipped with its own Bluetooth adapter, and upload photos, MPEG movie clips, send e-mails, and even--although we're not sure we see the utility of this--surf the Web. Both the digital stills and MPEG movie clips are recorded onto the included 8 MB Memory Stick.

The standard accoutrements play out fairly well with a 10x optical zoom with Super SteadyShot image stabilization. The 2.5-inch LCD is not terribly impressive except when you remember that this is a small camcorder (very small), and the 2.5 inches actually fit quite well with the overall package. You also get Sony's NightShot shooting mode--it's an infrared mode. The PC120BT also includes a few nice ports, including: USB, mic input, IEEE 1394, mini-AV, and S-video.

If you want to buy this digital camcorder, I recommend you to do it at Amazon. Buying is easy, shipping is fast, plus it has really low prices and a very good customer service.

The Sony DCR-PC110 Mini DV camcorder is loaded with more goodies than a piñata, and in a package smaller than a box of Pop-Tarts. Its novel-length owner's manual is 166 pages of tiny type with, thankfully, dozens of instructive illustrations with circles and arrows. To control all these features, the PC110 is covered with buttons, switches, and toggles that would intimidate even the most seasoned techno-geek. But damn if this digital camcorder isn't fun to use, despite a couple of ergonomic hiccups, plus it stores great images thanks to its Carl Zeiss lens, and, more importantly, it will elicit many oohs and aahs from the techno-envious.

Like most Mini DV models, the PC110 can take still pictures and store them either on tape or on a flash media card--in this case, Sony's proprietary Memory Stick. Unlike most DV camcorders, the PC110 also can record 15- and 60-second MPEGs, saving you the trouble of having to convert your footage to this e-mail-friendly format in your PC. The camcorder comes with a 4 MB Stick, which holds just six high-resolution stills, and is useless unless you have a Memory Stick-equipped Sony VAIO, a Memory Stick accessory drive, or a built-in USB port.

The PC110 also enables you to spice up your recorded video with an array of picture and digital effects, such as negative, sepia tone, or black and white. You also can zoom in during playback of a recorded image. These extra effects are for those folks who do in-camera editing and can be output only through the camcorder's analog outputs, not via i.Link/FireWire. If you've got video-editing software, you can add many of these effects and more on your PC.

The PC110 also includes in-camera digital-editing compiling capabilities--choose in-and-out edit points for particular scenes, set the scene sequence (up to 20 scenes), and the camera automatically goes back and forth to output the image to whatever tape player you've connected the camcorder to. This program editing is a bit convoluted, but it's better than doing it manually.

The biggest problem is the placement of frequently accessed control buttons and jacks. For instance, the zoom and still-photo shutter release buttons are located at the front of the camcorder, vaguely where your pinky is supposed to be. But the pinky isn't the most dexterous digit, and the hand-strap further limits the little finger's angular movement necessary to manipulate either switch.

The PC110's stocky design also necessitates the scattering of the various inputs and outputs. The microphone, headphone, and DC power inputs are located on upper-right side; the i.Link (FireWire), USB, and AC power are on the front below the lens; the S-Video output is on the lower-right side under the hand strap; and the analog A/V minijack is located to the right of the power/standby/record switch.

And being that this is a tiny camcorder, the 2.5-inch LCD viewscreen also makes it difficult to make out the details in a crowded frame. The menu does include two sets of LCD brightness controls to ameliorate the lack of LCD area. --Stewart Wolpin

Pros:

  • 1-megapixel still-shot capability
  • Fun to use
  • Records 15- and 60-second MPEGs onto Memory Stick
  • Informative illustrated manual
  • Quality Carl Zeiss lens

Cons:

  • Bundled Memory Stick is only 4 MB
  • Expensive
  • Controls can be difficult to use

The Sony DCR-PC105 goes beyond a regular video camcorder by being equipped with useful technological additions, such as a 1-megapixel digital camera and MPEG movie mode. The camcorder also features a 10x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD with touch panel control, color viewfinder, and USB streaming capabilities.

Step-up Value
Here's a Sony feature that adds value to this digital camcorder and differentiates it from other models in the Sony lineup.

product image Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar Lens: Famous for its superior sharpness and color accuracy, the Vario-Sonnar lens is the most advanced multi-layer optical coating system. The Carl Zeiss optical zoom brings the action close up from far away. In addition, precision digital zoom interpolation technology means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom.

Image Stabilization
Sony's SteadyShot picture stabilization keeps your images smooth and steady without degrading picture quality. The technology uses motion sensors, which tends to be more accurate than most other systems used in the camcorder market.

Optics
The multi-coated Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens ensures light capture will be well-contrasted and clear. The 1/4.7-inch advanced HAD CCD sensor accurately records images in vibrant color and sharp resolution. The PC105 has a robust 10x optical zoom that fits most purposes, but for extra distance the camera can reach 120x through the digital zoom. You can choose from three focusing systems to keep your images sharp and in focus: full range auto, manual, and spot focusing.

More Features
You can record video in low to no light situations with Sony's NightShot system, which uses infrared light to capture images invisible to the human eye. With the function on, subjects up to 10 feet away can be seen in total darkness. You can also use the color slow shutter for color night shots instead of the regular green night shot hue.

Sony's Stamina power management system and InfoLithium battery give the PC105 a long operating time. To keep you informed of current battery life, Sony's AccuPower meter displays the number of minutes remaining right in the viewfinder.

You can take digital stills and record small MPEG EX movies using the included 8 MB Memory Stick. This is where the 1 megapixel resolution CCD really shines, creating images with vibrant color and detail. The intelligent pop-up flash keeps your images well-lit and visible.

The PC105 features an easy to see 2.5-inch color LCD and a color viewfinder. The screen's image can still be easily seen even in broad daylight with the use of the LCD backlight. The menu is accessed via a touch screen display on the LCD, reducing the clutter of buttons on the camera.

The USB port can be used to bring in your stills onto the computer or stream video to make the camcorder function as a video conferencing tool or webcam. The IEEE1394 (Firewire) connection can be used for digital video editing on a computer, and S-Video and AV connections are also present for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the new preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 540 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 20 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Contents
This package includes the PC105 camcorder, power adaptor/in-camera charger, InfoLithium rechargeable battery, 8 MB Memory Stick, wireless remote with 2 AA batteries, AV cable, lens cap, shoulder strap, USB cable, USB drivers, and LCD cleaning cloth.

The Sony DCR-PC101 is a uniquely designed MiniDV camera with a wide range of functions, including operating as a 1-megapixel digital still camera, a 10x optical zoom, a manual focus ring, a night-shooting function, and a large 2.5-inch LCD screen.

Lens
The lens is a famous, high-quality Carl Zeiss construction with a single CCD capturing the image, enabling the camera to produce 520 lines of resolution. The SteadyShot function stabilizes the picture and reduces camera shake. Use the infrared NightShot for shooting at night or in dark settings. The PC101 also sports a 10x optical zoom, which is enough for most purposes. Turn on the digital zoom, which electronically magnifies the optical image, and zoom up to 120 times.

Digital Stills
Digital stills can be stored on a Memory Stick that works independently from the DV tape system (an 8 MB stick is included). The camera performs with 1-megapixel resolution, making it capable of sharp images that are up to 1,152 x 864 pixels in size. The camera can also shoot in MPEG movie mode, storing 320 x 240 videos onto the memory stick.

Inputs and Outputs
The PC101 is equipped with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire) for a super-fast, a lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines. The USB connection is used for transferring digital photos and MPEG movies. The traditional S-video and RCA connections are also present for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing.

The DCR-PC101 comes with one 8 MB Memory Stick. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take a lot of digital images, then you'll want a bigger card.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution--far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You'll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

You'll also get excellent sound quality, recorded in either 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

  • 16-bit audio includes on set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound.
  • 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary into your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of two full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

The newest digital format on the market, MicroMV records video and audio encoded as MPEG-2, which is the format used for DVD video. While this is a unique and intriguing feature, it's buttressed by the incredibly small size of the camera itself. While MicroMV might be the wave of the future, there are some unanswered questions in the present, but those concern the camcorder's interoperability with computers (most video-editing programs are made to work with the DV standard, not MPEG-2) rather than its shooting abilities.

All that said, your biggest question is probably, just how small is the DCR-IP7BT? It measures less than 2 inches wide, 4 inches high, and just over 3 inches deep. In other words, it's the smallest digital camcorder we've seen. Amazingly, Sony crammed a 10x optical zoom and 2.5-inch LCD onto this thing, which means they didn't sacrifice anything in their quest for smallness. Plus, they've included a digital still mode (and MPEG movie mode) that records onto Memory Stick. With the Bluetooth adapter, you can e-mail pictures and short movie clips right from the camcorder, but you need to be near a computer that is equipped with Bluetooth as well.

The DCR-IP7BT uses Super SteadyShot image stabilization to avoid the shakes normally associated with high zoom levels. Image stabilization will likely be your best friend when using the IP5, as its small size and weight lend themselves to the small camera movements likely to result in shaky footage. The camera comes with S-video, composite video, and IEEE 1394 ports.
