I know it is early-however I feel all pet owners should give some thought as too what they will do with their precious pets on the day or two before and the few days after November 5th. Many accidental injusries ( as well as some horrible and completly delibrate ones) are inflicted upon many felines at this time of year. Many poor cats also take fright and run away and hide and you may it may take you weeks (if at all) to find them. Can I suggest, that unless you live in the middle of no-where and will definitly no be bothred by fireworks, you prepare a litter tray, get plenty of new toys in to intrest your feline and Keep them in for a week around this time.
Better safe than sorry!

Today I was surprised to hear that a fellow mom down our road was planning to get rid of the extremly expensive maine coon she had just bought for her family (she paid around $1200, if anyone is interested). I decided to hurry round and find out what on earth was going on.
I walked up the drive but before I had a chance to enter the house I was confronted with a blood curdeling scream. I ran to the door to inquire further and to try and help, I didn't know whether to suspect fire or theft in progress. I headed into the kitchen where I could her the screaming coming from- sure enough I found a surprising amount of blood spread around the kitchen. I hesitated to enter the room, whilst mustering up my courage i happened to notice from the corner of my eye a womans feet hanging mid-air, bizzare and alarming as it was I couldn't help but feel rather silly.

On further inspection mid-air turned out to be kitchen work-top height, and the feet, I am gad to report, were still attached to their rightfull body! Helping my neighbour off the work unit and calming her down I suddenly realised where the blood had come from. Her bright and springy kitten maine coon appeared from the door nearest the garden, his white fluffy whiskers were tarnished red. He look pleased with himself and looked about as if to try and remember where he had placed his trophy. The cat had been bringing in mice and birds to kill, eat and generally spread around the kitchen. My neighbour's screams were more of shock than terror and her decison to banish the cat at the earliest availiable became vaguely more understandable if not a tad illogical.

Over coffee she explained she would sell the cat to the first bidder, anything to get rid of the: "dirty rotten mudering killing machiene!". Chuckling I made a joke of offering $0.20... She informed me it was no laughing matter and that I could shuve my $0.20, if I would just take the cat away.

Sitting here now blogging with a $1200 purring blissfully on my lap I would like to point out the pointlessness in fearing what nature intended and the ignorance in assuming that you can purchase an animal without its innate sense of hunting...

Not all house-cats, whether pedigree or not, will want to hunt. But the majority do...most cats will find a mouse or other baby animal from time to time and etiher kill it and leave it, kill it and eat it, bring it home, kill it first then bring it home, kill it a little bit then bring it home and some combine these options... The only certainty is that you will never ever stop a cat that wants to hunt from hunting, instead you should try and deal with the problem. Try and minimise the damage a "killer cat" can do to your home. Try limiting the cat's unsupervised access to the rooms in your house that are laminate, wooden, tiled or vinal floored, this way all mess can be dealt with using a mop or cloth.

Secondly, if you buy a big magnificent breed of cat that was originally bred for hunting purposes then it is more likely they will be "killers". Fact. So choose wisely and sensibly, research your breed and make sure you anticipate what ownership of such a cat will be like.

Your Cat is not imune from sun damage. The sun has got hotter, the ozone is thinner and we all know about the dangers of the sun to our own skin, but what about Kitty?
Well vets repry yhat they are seeing more and more cats bought in with sun damege to the tis of their ears and even tumors on the delecate ear tips.
So what can we do for our cats?Lots actually.
Ensure that when they are outside in the garden that they have a hide away where they can get out of the sun. In the same way that you protect your own delicate skin-sun screen, this can be gently rubbed in to kitty's ear tips to protect their delicate skin, after all they do say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Safe Window Blinds for Kids and KittensEveryone knows that corded window blinds aren't safe for young children, but did you know they can also be a hazard for your furry feline friend as well? We've all enjoyed a laugh while our frisky kitties have had a good time batting around the long cords that hang from vertical blinds. Of course, there's nothing dangerous going on as long as you're sitting right there to keep an eye on the situation. The real problems arise if your precious pet gets stuck in the cords while you're away from home or out of earshot. If you want to play it safe, there are many cordless blind options that will allow you to shade your windows without worrying about your cat's safety. You can invest in sliding panels for your larger windows, roller shades for your smaller ones, and even discreet little attachments for your regular blinds that will hold the long, tempting cords out of reach. It just takes a little effort to make sure that your pets are protected.Who needs cords, anyway? What kitty really wants is a long string attached to a stick -- something my dad used to call a "cat fishing pole." Make one of those up from items laying around your house or yard, and you and your cat will be entertained for hours.

The first Siamese to appear in England were a gift from the king of Siam to an emeinent english ambassador who brought them home. They began appearing in English cat shows almost immediately, and in American shows by the early twentieth century and have fallen in and out of favour ever since.
Seal points, still the best known variety, were the first to arrive. With their seal brown, almost black extremities and their pale fawn bodies, they were sensational. While chocolate points, with creamy white bodies and milk chocolate legs, tail, mask and ears did appear from time to time, it was the blue point that gained official recognition in 1934. The blue point has a bluish-white body with slate blue points. The chocolate point was recognized next. In 1955 the lilac point followed and completed the breed. The lilac point has pinkish gray points with a white body which makes it most ethereal and delicate in color.

The long Siamese head is delineated by an absolutely straight profile and well aligned chin. From the front, the outline of the face presents a smooth wedge with large ears that complete the wedge and pleasing shape. The outstanding feature of the head is the pair of deep blue almond eyes (an eye’s width apart) which are set at a slant. If you have been able to resist all the other attributes of this breed, the eyes will captivate you. They radiate intelligence and emotion.
This ancient breed, perhaps the oldest of all our cats, is able to communicate like no other. The Siamese voice is legendary. They speak both with their voice and with their body. They are the quintessential “people's” cat, for they love to be in your lap, on your bed, at your tableand in your heart! They can almost be heard to cry an audable 'mum' as you are prepairing to feed them which is adorable.lol There less but fun facinating side was caught well and caracatured by disney by the scandolous pair of siamese in lady and the tramp.

You may have heared the old wives tale that if you move home, that you are meany to put butter on your cats paws to help kity somehow not get lost or stray.
I first heared this and thought it quite silly. However, the lady that told me this was married to a soldier, and moved with him approximatly every 4 months. They had two cats and they never ran off or got lost. Well don't ask me if there is any scientific explanation for this as I really couldn't say. I can only tell you that I have practised this old wives tale myself and have never lost a moggy yet.lol
And even even it dosen;t really work...where's the harm? Your cat sure will enjoy licking butter from its paws and that won't do your feline any harm at all!

Feline asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and allergic bronchitis. Regardless of the name, it is a common cat ailment. Inhaled allergens cause sudden contraction of the smooth muscles around airways, leading to typical asthma symptoms just like those seen in people. It is usually quite difficult to determine which allergens cause asthma in individual cats, but common ones include grass and tree pollens, cigarette or fireplace smoke, various sprays (hair sprays, deodorants, flea sprays, deodorizers and deodorizing carpet powders, and dust from cat litter trays. (Try to choose low duct producing cat litter with big granules if you must use it)
Feline asthma is found in cats of all ages. The prevalence in the general adult cat population is about 1%. The most common symptoms in cats with asthma are wheezing and coughing. The coughing has been described as a dry, hacking cough that could be confused with gagging or retching. Many cats are misdiagnosed as having hairballs! Bouts of coughing occur frequently. In mildly affected cats, coughing and wheezing may occur only occasionally. A few cats with asthma are asymptomatic in between acute and severe bouts of airway constriction. The most severely affected cats have daily coughing and wheezing and many bouts of airway constriction, leading to open-mouth breathing and panting that can be life threatening.
The symptoms of asthma can mimic other diseases, such as heartworm, pneumonia and congestive heart failure. If your pet is unwell, don't forget to alert your vet if you have used any spray products in th hom, on your pet or furnishings. If you live in a contry area, let your vet know if your pet started to wheeze after local fields were sprayed etc.
The good news is, it is something that can affect your pet one time only and never occur again. All the measures you can take that are preventative will also be good for every member of your houshold, not just your cat. Consult your vet if your cat continues to cough and wheeze.

We have all seen humourous pictures of people who look like their dogs, but have you noticed how many people look like their cats? Take a look around, there are plenty of them. A good friend of mine bought a lovely black cat, with sleek fur and glossy ebony sheen. About a month later, she had quite innocently fancied a change of hairdo. She went from brown to black in hair colour. This may be a coincidence but...they did look like quite a pair.
I mentioned this to her in fun, and at first she was not amused but ended up giggling furiously. "Well, she expalined, he has taken some of my traits on board too. Every morning he has a saucer of tea and marmite on toast with me"
So the moral of this story may be, choose your new pet wisely, you may both grow to look and even act alike.

Send us all your lovely photos of you and your cat, if this warning is too late for you.lol
We would love to see them!

Not a difficult task you may think, but it does require thought.
I have spoken to people that have made mistakes whilst naming their cat on both ends of the scale.
From people who have called their pet fluffy, and when they go into the garden to call fluffy find 6 other cats from the area also named fluffy turn up. To folk that thought it fun to call their cat marmaduke the 3rd and find the cat ignores their grand tittle and go instead to anyone who shouts puss!
Cats as well as dogs do not respond well to long names containing many or complex sounds. Fluf-fy or tidd-les are prime examples of short names that your pet will respond to well. Marmaduke the 3rd will leave them unsurprisingly cold.lol. Be careful not to giv your pet too long or commom a name. Also, when you first have your pet, try out a series of sounds and words that could possibly make up their name to see what they respond to. I have a neighbour who has a cat, that she unimaginativly calls 'cat'. She goes out and scretches 'cat' in a very high pitched voice and her puss comes running every time without fail. Yet I have a cat that runs and hides if anyone scretches anything in such high pitched tones whatever they are saying! Just like people, cats are individuals with various likes and dislikes. Try from the out set to name your cat with this in mind and you will have more chance of you beloved pet coming home when they are called at a later date if their name is a good match and pleasing for their ears!

Do you constantly shout at your cat because it scratched the sofa, you toes, ot door frames?
Why do you think he does it? Well a cat has to scratch, and one way or another he will excert this natural desire to do so. The best solution to this problem, is buy yout kitty a combined play house/scratching post tree. You will get hours of fun watching kitty going crazy on it as he leaps all over the place dualing with an imaginary foe and popping in and out of the tunnels, he will get a good work out enjoy the scratching post with his claws and benifit from the fact thatno one is hissing at him for his 'mad half hour and legal scratch fest' eveyone wins! It is advisable to buy one when or even before you purchase kitty. I have seen however even older cats introduced to this and take to using them very well indeed, so give it a go and save your furniture and toes!

Your beloved pet is not imortal. There is always a possibility that it may get sick or may even have an accident. You can do the following to ty to avoid this, an once of prevention is better than a poun of cure as they say....
Ensure your cat is inoculated, and that all booster jabs are up to date. You would be amazed how many people I talk to that have all the initial inocculation done when Puss is a kitten then simply don't bother after that. Booster jabs ensure on going protection and they are needed to protect your beloved pet from illness so remember to visit your vet yearly. He will also give puss a quick check up to look for any initial signs of ill health, which if caught early can be prevented from developing. Well worth they time and trouble. How would you cope if your beautiful kitten developed an ongoing illnes, say became diabetic? It can be costly, so be warned. Just like an other member of the family, a cat can develope long term health problems so be prepaired. The best option is to protect your cat by taking out low cost pet insurance. This will give you peace of mind in case the worse happens. Worth thinking about and considering before you even go looking to purchase your new kitten. Should the worst happen...you will be very glad that you did.

The Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat:
If you offer him pheasant he would rather have grouse.
If you put him in a house he would much prefer a flat,
If you put him in a flat then he'd rather have a house.
If you set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat,
If you set him on a rat then he'd rather chase a mouse.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat-
-And there isn't any call for me to shout it:
For he will doAs he do doAnd there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore:
When you let him in, then he wants to be out;
He's always on the wrong side of every door,
And as soon as he's at home, then he'd like to get about.
He likes to lie in the bureau drawer,But he makes such a fuss if he can't get out.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat-
-And there isn't any use for you to doubt it:For he will doAs he do doAnd there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious beast:
His disobliging ways are a matter of habit.
If you offer him fish then he always wants a feast;
When there isn't any fish then he won't eat rabbit.
If you offer him cream then he sniffs and sneers,
For he only likes what he finds for himself;
So you'll catch him in it right up to the ears,
If you put it away on the larder shelf.
The Rum Tum Tugger is artful and knowing,
The Rum Tum Tugger doesn't care for a cuddle;
But he'll leap on your lap in the middle of your sewing,
For there's nothing he enjoys like a horrible muddle.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat-
-And there isn't any need for me to spout it:
For he will doAs he do doAnd there's no doing anything about it!
T. S. Elliot
Ok, so we need to politely discuss the problem of cats peeing everywhere but in their litter boxes. It is the largest single cause of consternation among cat aficionados right up there alongside clawing furniture and drapes.

Indeed, shelters cite the largest reason given by people surrendering cats is "He pees all over the house."

Its Sad.
Sad because there are solutions other than euthanasia, which is another euphemism for "killing." Cats are fastidious creatures, and given a clean litterbox, will gravitate to it like magic. When a cat suddenly scorns the litterbox in favor of the new carpet or Junior's closet floor, it behooves us humans to investigate the cause.

Spay Your Female Cats
Anyone who has lived through the misery of having a female cat in almost constant heat cycles will attest that it is not a pleasant experience. Their loud calling, often accompanied by spraying urine (to attract a mate) are evidence that they are, if not actually physically in pain, at least uncomfortable and unhappy.
Aside from the very real feline overpopulation problem, there are some valid health reasons for spaying female cats.
Decreased Risk of Mammary CancerIdeally, to give a female cat protection against mammary cancer, she should be spayed prior to her first heat. Each subsequent heat brings a greater chance of mammary cancer at a later time.
Eliminates Risk of Ovarian or Uterine CancerSpaying a cat involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries. No organs: no cancer; simple as that.
Eliminates Chances of PyometritisPyometra is a virulent bacteria that attacks the uterus of cats, usually a week or so after estrus, and is a potentially fatal infection.

Neuter Your Male Cats!
This is an essential step. Neutering is a simple surgery with a very quick recovery period. Besides preventing unwanted pregnancies, neutering a male will help mitigate certain problem behavior found in whole males, and it will help prevent certain medical conditions, too.
Neutered cats are less likely to spray strong urine
Neutered cats will lose the urge to fight
Neutered cats will be less likely to try to escape
Neutered cats will not suffer the abscesses from fighting
Neutered cats will be less likely to contract diseases such as FeLV and FIV
Neutered cats will not be subject to testicular cancer
Neutered cats will not likely develop "stud tail," caused by overactive glands in the tail
Neutered cats have a decreased risk of mammary cancer

The type of dangers a cat may encounter whilst outside you home may be:

Predators:
Woodsy, green areas are attractive to bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, and other predators indigenous to an area. Owls or raptors such as hawks may find a smaller cat a tasty morsel.
Large Dogs:
Unfortunately, dog owners in an area such as you describe, will often let their dogs run loose, and free-ranging dogs often form packs, against which a cornered cat does not stand a chance.
Other Cats: Your cat could accidentally stray into the territory "owned" by another cat, and find himself involved in a life-and-death battle.
Even if he emerged victorious, if the other cat is feral or stray, he could pass on serious diseases to your cat through bite wounds, such as FIV or FeLV . (FeLV can also be passed on through casual contact.)

Yet, as much as you love your cat, there is never any justification to keep a healthy cat locked up inside a house. Just be aware of the dangers and try and encourage you cat to stay within your garden- however, most cats are mischiviou little rascels and cannot be controlled in this manner.!

Good times to quit the kitty play session are:

a)After you've gone for 10-15 minutes and your cat has just scored a decisive victory;

b)You've tried for a few minutes to engage your cat in a play session, but he's just not into it right now.

In both scenarios, give your cat some nice praise just for showing up. In the first case, make the victory a little sweeter with a nice treat. Tell him what a good hunter he is.

Your Assignment for the duration of you cat's kittne hood is:

Two play sessions a day, 15 minutes a piece.

Extra credit will be given for:
additional play sessions

Kittens will play with anything!
Just keep dangerous items like string, plastic bags, small ingestibles, your toes, small children, expensive clothing, electrical wires and other stuff (use your common sense) away from Mr. Kitten if you're not supervising him.
Many kitten owners will tell you that the only thing known to mankind that can keep up with a kitten is…another kitten. You'll enjoy playing with him with interactive toys, but be aware that he should learn early-on that your hands are not toys. If you ignore this advice, you may learn to regret it when he grows up and develops full-sized teeth and claws.

Housebreaking Your Cat

In most instances, kittens are taught to use the litter box by their mother; so housebreaking is one chore you may not have to face with a cat.

However, due to various factors, your cat may begin spraying or marking outside her litter box. This inappropriate behavior may indicate psychological stress. For example, your cat maybe spraying because you've moved into a new home, purchased a different type of litter, or added a cat (or human) to the family. They can be very sensitive about this and worry about their pecking order and place in the houshold.
Spraying or marking may also indicate a medical problem such as feline lower urinary tract disease or kidney disease.Your first course of action in this case is to determine if there is a need to see your vet. Blood in the urine, straining and yowling are clues that indicate a medical problem that needs to be addressed. If there appears to be no medical problem, reduce or eliminate all possible causes of stress.
Make sure your cat get's extra fuss and a peaceful place to retreat to if the house gets to busy.
If the problem continues, seek the advice of your vet.
If you have removed all the possible sources of stress and your vet says there is no sign of a medical problem, take steps to ensure that your cat has access to a clean litter box. You may need multiple boxes, particularly if you have more than one cat. If this fails, try the following method. First, clean the areas where your cat has been soiling. Then divide your cat's food into portions and put a plate on each area that your cat uses as a toilet. Because cats hate to eliminate in their feeding areas, they will soon return to the litter tray.
Another option is to discuss neutering with your veterinarian. Some cats respond to this responsible procedure. One reminder-if your cat has an accident, do not use ammonia or ammonia-based cleaners. You will only be applying the very smell you are trying eliminate and this will actually encourage them to soil this area.
A good tip here, if you can stand it yourself, sprink the area with a light dusting of white pepper.
If the cat/kitten returns to this area to soil, as they sniff about it will make them sneeze and deter them from this bad habbit.
I do not feel this is cruel to do. A sneeze or two will not hurt your favourite feline!
)I did say a 'light' dusting of white peepper!!!
It will help both you and your pet to not have to have soiled areas in your home. If your cat/kitten does 'pick' a particular place to soil, act immidiatly before this habbit becomes ingrained and impossible to change.

The Turkish Van is a loyal, loving and very intelligent feline.. Its temperament depends greatly on its upbringing, the amount of human contact and handling it receives as a kitten, and the temperament of the queen (mother) herself. They are very affectionate, giving head butts and love bites, but to the uninitiated this could be slightly alarming, but when you get to know your cat you will begin to understand. They are very boisterous and fun loving
They are great climbers, so don't be surprised to find them sitting on top of doors, kitchen units or wardrobes, and some wouldn't think twice about climbing your curtains and sitting on the curtain rail. A great game is retrieving screwed up paper, some catching the ball of paper in mid flight, others making great somersaults. They will also enjoy games with balls of foil to chase.
Where water is concerned, some are not very keen at all, whereas others may love dripping taps, especially drinking from them, then flicking the water with their paws, or dropping toys into their water bowl. It has been known for Turks to swim in the bath, swimming pool or even the sea. So be warned they may come and join in your daily shower. They may even join you in the bath, or jump straight into a nearby fish pond or lake for a quick dip! They may also become curious about toilets.
They like to be involved in everything their owners do and follow them around like a dog. In fact some people have said that Turkish Vans are more like dogs than cats. On the whole, they get on very well with dogs indeed, but the Turk will want to be the boss. In most instances the females are more independent and if you have a male and female, she will normally rule the roost, but there are always the exceptions.
Of course, as with all things in life there are a few downsides. Turks have been known to wreak havoc, such as shredding curtains, knocking ornaments and plants off shelves, mantelpieces and kitchen surfaces etc., sometimes this is quite deliberate! Also they have the ability to open doors, especially cupboards etc. and don't think twice about knocking the contents onto the floor. They can be naughty and very confident as they go about wreaking havoc. It is best to keep these cats busy and not allow them to become bored. A busy household full of family members who will all have a minute or two here and there to fuss or play with the cat, or just to entertain them as they watch you go about your business. The only thing that will knock the Turkish Van’s confidence and may reduce your brave lively puss to a frightened little kitty is the pitch of certain noises.
These cats can be extremely vocal, dislike travel and can almost be like having an additional child join the family.
Not a breed for everyone, but some Van lovers wouldn’t be without them.

Are those cats from Aliens No, Cornish Rex cats are not from outer space and, in spite of their resemblance to ancient Egyptian statues, they are not from Egypt. Although they do somewhat resemble the Egyptian epitome of a cat. As their name implies, these cats originated in Cornwall, England, where they first appeared in a litter of barn cats born about 1950. They were not bred and designed as such, more a happy natural occurrence.

To look at, the Cornish Rex cats are a study in curves starting most noticeably with their coat which ideally falls in waves. The coat is short, lies close to the body and is incredibly soft to touch, prompting comparisons to cut velvet, karakul, rabbit fur or silk. In fact, it feels like a Cornish Rex coat and nothing else is quite as soft!
In addition to the coat, this breed has a distinct head and body type and shape. Large ears are set high on a comparatively small, oval head with high cheekbones, hollow cheeks, and a high-bridged Roman nose and strong jaw line. Most of today’s ‘Supermodels’ would envy their bone structure. The body has been compared to a Whippet dog’s because of its arched back, barrel chest, small waist and very long, fine legs. In spite of their dainty appearance, these small to medium sized cats are extremely hardy and muscular, using their well developed hips and long legs for fast starts and stops, quick turns and high jumps not unlike a greyhound actually. They make a delightful addition as a hardy family pet in most cases.

Ragdoll cats belong to one of the most popular cat breeds in the world.
These are large felines, are longhaired cats with amazing, big blue eyes. Their light-colored body has darker Siamese-type points on the face, ears, legs, and tail. An ideal Ragdoll cat is well balanced. If a male is altered, it may reach the weight of 20 pounds or more. Females are smaller and look more feminine. They usually weigh about 8-15 pounds. They are I feel most loved because of their placid nature.
In temperament, these are very gentle and loving animals. Rag doll cats are sometimes called "man's best companions." The largest breed in the world, rivalled only by the American 'Main Coon' the Ragdoll cat also has a big heart and adores its humans. Even-tempered and docile, these cats are a pleasure to own. The cat is very good with children and tolerates other pets in the family as well. I know one lady who has a rag doll and keeps 100's of exotic birds whom are let aout each day to stretch their wings. From time to time they land on the cats head who either purrs, ignores them or attempts to groom them! In fact she owns an African grey parot who loves to get a good grooming from her per Rag Doll!
Ragdoll Cats - The Coat is medium-long coats of this cat breed are relatively easy to groom. The cats have bushy tails. The fur is longer around the neck and on the back of the hindquarters. The cat's fur does not tend to mat, however, it requires occasional grooming. A gentle brushing with a long bristled brush on a regular basis is highly recommended. A bi-color pattern is characteristic of the cat. Colorpoint, mitted and bicolor are the usual patterns in Ragdoll cats.
A sheer delight to own.
