Murnau's The Last Laugh, a film notable in silent cinema for its lack of title cards, and in the 1922 film version of Shakespeare's Othello. Besides The Last Laugh, Jannings worked with Murnau on two other films, playing the title character in Herr Tartüff and Mephistopheles in Faust. During the Third Reich, he starred in several films which were intended to promote Nazism, particularly the Führerprinzip: Der Herrscher ("The Ruler" 1937), The Youth of Frederick the Great (1935), and The Dismissal of Bismarck (1942). ![]() The postcard depicts the Grand Hotel in St. Wolfgang. The signature war written with a pencil. The autograph comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. German actor Emil Jannings ran away from home at age 16 to become a sailor, and ended up working as an assistant cook on a ocean liner. He returned home disillusioned, but soon took up the theater; at 18 he made his professional stage debut, going on to tour with several companies in numerous provincial towns. In 1906 he was invited to join Max Reinhardt's theater in Berlin, then considered to be the finest stage troupe in the world. Over the following decade, he established himself as a significant stage actor. Jannings debuted onscreen in 1914, but the first five years of his film career were routine. In 1919 he began appearing in a string of Germanic-slanted historical dramas, portraying imposing historical figures such as Louis XV, Henry VIII, and Peter the Great; next he starred in a series of literary adaptations. By the mid-'20s he had an international reputation, and many considered him the world's greatest screen actor. In 1927 Paramount signed him and he moved to Hollywood, appearing in a number of films designed to showcase his gift for tragedy. Jannings won the very first Best Actor Academy Award for his first two American films, The Last Command (1928) and The Way of All Flesh (1927). Because of his thick German accent, the advent of sound ended his American career. He returned to Germany in 1929. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was enlisted to participate in the state's propaganda machine; an enthusiastic supporter of the Nazis, he spent the next decade-plus making films that supported Nazi ideology. Propaganda Minister Goebbels awarded him in 1938 with a medal and an appointment to head Tobis, the company that produced his films, and he was honored as Artist of the State in 1941. Upon returning to America, he took the role of a disturbed young murderer in Pretty Poison (1968). He also played Chaplain Tappman in Catch-22 (1970). Portrait photo ( real Photo – style ) of the tragic historic figure, Archduke Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia (1858 - 1889). Rudolf was the son and heir of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
![]() His death, apparently through suicide, along with that of his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, at his Mayerling hunting lodge in 1889 made international headlines, fueled international conspiracy rumours and ultimately may have sealed the long-term fate of the Habsburg monarchy. According to official reports, their deaths were a result of Franz Josef's demand that the couple end the relationship: the Crown Prince, as part of a suicide pact, shot his mistress in the head, then himself. Rudolf was officially declared to have been in a state of "mental unbalance" in order to enable burial in the Imperial Crypt (Kapuzinergruft) of the Capuchin Church in Vienna. Mary's body was smuggled out of Mayerling in the middle of the night, and secretly buried in the cemetery of Holy Cross Abbey in Heiligenkreuz, and the Emperor had Mayerling converted into a penitential convent of Carmelite nuns. Today prayers are still said daily by the nuns for the repose of Rudolf's soul. Bob Geldof hand signed b/w photograph ( Photo credit: Karen Korn ).

In 1979, the group shot to international fame with their second UK No. 1, "I Don't Like Mondays".This was equally successful, as well as controversial; Geldof wrote it in the aftermath of Brenda Ann Spencer's attempted massacre at an elementary school across the street from her house in San Diego, California, at the beginning of 1979. On the 31 March 2005, Geldof and Ure announced the Live 8 project, to raise awareness of issues that burden Africa, such as government debt, trade barriers, and AIDS issues. Geldof organised six concerts with U2, Elton John, Pink Floyd, The Who, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Duran, Brian Wilson, Crosby Stills & Nash, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Dave Matthews, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Deep Purple and many more. In 1959, Heston won an Academy Award for the title role in William Wyler's Ben Hur. The '70s brought Heston into a new kind of epic, the disaster film, and he appeared in three, notably Airport 1975. Heston served six terms as the president of the Screen Actors Guild and also chaired the American Film Institute. Active in such charities as The Will Rogers Institute, he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 1977 Oscar ceremony.
