Foundation Year Scholarships for Outstanding Indonesian Students.

Value:
The Foundation Year Scholarship ranges from A$5,800-A$7,750, covering Semester 2 tuition fees. Scholarships are paid retrospectively upon commencement of the student’s undergraduate studies at The University of Queensland.

Who can apply:
Indonesian students, SMU III and SMU II (school leavers and mature age students). To be eligible applicants must have obtained:

  • GPA 7.5 in SMU III (or equivalent) in 5 major subjects. SMU II Applicants must have superior grades.
  • English Language Proficiency results of IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 252.

The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) is a collaboration between the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). PhD training will be carried out in English at your chosen lab at A*STAR Research Institutes, NUS or NTU. Students will be supervised by distinguished and world-renowned researchers in these labs. Upon successful completion, students will be conferred a PhD degree by either NUS or NTU.

"We want to encourage more such exchanges, to build friendships and mutual understanding. This is why we are introducing a new Singapore International Graduate Award (or SINGA), for international students to do their PhD training in a multi-disciplinary environment in Singapore. 240 SINGA Awards will be given every year to top students from all over the world. The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides expenses for a four-year course of study toward a bachelor’s degree for up to twenty-two exceptionally able Asian students annually from these countries and regions: the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

  • Applications must be postmarked or submitted online by January 1, 2009.
  • Students are advised to register now for SAT (or ACT) and TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Notification by April 1, 2009.
  • Japan notification by March 1, 2009.

Wesleyan is now accepting applications for participation in the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program. The chosen applicants will join 2,800 other Wesleyan undergraduates from throughout the United States and nearly 50 countries for study with an outstanding teaching and research faculty in the sciences and mathematics, the arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences.

Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme 2008

The Embark Initiative`s Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology.

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Initiative Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008).

The 2008 programme will fund approximately 80 new entrant Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology.

A number of additional scholarships will be jointly funded by industry as part of IRCSET`s Enterprise Partnership Scheme (see below for details). This scheme fosters mutually beneficial collaboration between the academic and commercial research sectors.

Two PhD Studentships: Islamic History and Maritime Ethnography
Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies
University of Exeter

Exceptional researchers are needed for an exciting collaborative three-year project. Directed by Prof Dionisius Agius, the five-strong team will work on the MARES project (Maritime Ethnography of the Arabian/Persian Gulf and the Red Sea: people, trade and pilgrimage from the emergence of Islam to the coming of the Portuguese in the Western Indian Ocean).

The project, based in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, is currently offering two PhD studentships covering annual tuition fees (UK/EU or International rate) and providing a £7,500 annual stipend.

You will need a Masters degree in a relevant subject and ideally have a background in archaeology. The two studentships are full-time over three years, starting 1 October 2008. All applicants will need a good command of Classical Arabic and spoken Arabic (if researching the Red Sea) plus Classical and Modern Persian (if focusing on Arabian/Persian Gulf).

PhD Scholarships for Research in Indonesia

Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and local governance issues.

The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren (Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled `Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia`. The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on environmental issues in the context of conservation and development programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity and sustainability outcomes.

The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision determined by the focus and site of each student`s component of the project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research, while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building, conservation and development projects are being conducted.
PhD studentship in Economics
Department of Economics City University London

The Department of Economics at City University, London, is able to offer a three-year studentship to a candidate who wishes to read for a PhD in Economics starting October 2008. The studentship will consist of full remission of fees for three years plus a subsistence grant of £13,500 per year. In return the successful candidate will be expected to provide up to 50 hours per year of undergraduate class teaching and mark 50 undergraduate coursework scripts. Additional teaching and marking may be undertaken subject to approval of the student’s supervisory panel and will be paid at our normal rates.

Faculty of Arts, Department of History
Political history, cultural history and global history are three main foci of the Department of History"s contemporary research programme. The section of Political History focuses on issues of nationbuilding, citizenship and political culture in its relationship to processes of signification, inclusion and exclusion. Histories of colonialism and decolonisation are important in this respect.

Research project
Within the broader context of the NWO-programme on Cultural Dynamics two PhD-posts have been formulated for the research programme Sites, Bodies and Stories. The Dynamics of Heritage Formation in Colonial and Postcolonial Indonesia and the Netherlands. These are:
  1. Physical Anthropology, Colonial Practice and Cultural Policies;
  2. Performing identity, Shaping Heritage – Wayang puppet theatre and the dynamics of heritage formation in contemporary Indonesia.
Civil Engineering and Geosciences
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences provides leading, international research and education in road and water engineering, earth sciences, traffic and transport control, and delta technology. Innovation and sustainability are central themes. The research addresses global social issues and is closely interwoven with education as well as with the work carried out by a broad spectrum of knowledge institutions. The faculty consists of 17 sections distributed among the Departments of Design & Construction, Hydraulic Engineering, Transport & Planning, Water Management and Geotechnology.

The Section of Road and Railway Engineering focuses on the design, construction, management and maintenance of structures for land-based traffic, and the interaction between traffic and structures. The section has extensive laboratory facilities to perform advanced tests. Advanced mathematical tools are applied for in-depth analyses.
