Joanna Lumley has described her outrage at how the use of hens in battery cages still dominates the UK egg production market. The actress was speaking out on the eve of the charity Compassion in World Farmings Good Egg Awards, which she is hosting.
62% of the UKs 27 million egg-laying hens are still kept in battery cages, ranking the UK fifth in a European league table. Battery cages are small wire cages which provide each hen with a space no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper and prohibit many natural behaviours.
Ms Lumley, a patron of the charity, says: Battery cages are an outrage. But we can all help to consign them to the scrapbook of history. Lets all commit to buying only free range eggs.
Despite the growing consumer trend for free-range eggs, the vast majority of eggs used as an ingredient in cakes, mayonnaise, quiche, ready meals are from battery caged hens.
The Good Egg Awards were set up last year by Compassion in World Farming to celebrate companies ditching the battery cage egg in favour of eggs from free-range or barn kept hens. Cadbury Creme Egg, Hellmanns and The National Trust are among the UKs leading brands to be named Good Eggs at tomorrows ceremony.
The Good Egg Award winners are abandoning eggs from battery cages in all sorts of products. From cakes to confectionary to mayonnaise, consumers looking for ethical eggs will finally be able to make that choice, says Ms Lumley.
The award winners will effectively release over 10 million hens from cages, double the number released by Good Egg Award winners commitments last year.
As the UKs largest supermarket Tesco will receive the 2008 Rotten Egg Award for failing to make a commitment to rid their shelves of battery cage eggs. Tesco would free an estimated 1.3 million birds from cages each year if it moved to selling only barn and free-range eggs.
Chief Executive of Compassion in World Farming, Philip Lymbery argued that consumers no longer want to eat food that has been produced in cruel systems. Todays awards make it clear that the food business is turning its back on battery cages but producers and food companies whove yet to ditch the cage need to wake up and act now.

A new report released for the Department of Healths 5 A DAY campaign shows that although parents understand the importance of getting their 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day, many are still confused about what counts towards that target, with one in three admitting that their children know more than they do about 5 A DAY and nutrition.
1 in 2 parents dont realise that any vegetables they include in homemade food such as spaghetti bolognaise can count towards their five a day, and that of their children. And while 95% of parents know that chips dont count towards 5 A DAY, over a third still think that a baked potato does.
While 91% of parents know that fresh fruit and veg counts, and 78% are aware that frozen fruit and veg counts, 4 in 10 parents dont realise that canned fruit and veg counts too.
It looks as though theres some clearing up to do on the 5 a day issue, and in this exciting new video celebrity mum Melinda Messenger offers parents the clarity they need. Shell be offering her top tips to make sure both you and the little ones get all the daily fruit and veg you need.

Its official: were living in bland Britain. Despite 96% of us claiming were willing to try new flavours, 2 in 5 of us only experience a new taste once every 6 months or less and were supposed to be a nation which lives for food!
According to research conducted by Loyd Grossman Sauces it looks as though we do want to try new things, were just not confident enough about the more exotic flavours. Two thirds of us put ingredients such as cinnamon and chilli in our shopping basket showing at least some willingness to give new things a go. Sadly though a quarter of us never actually get round to using them. Instead we leave them forgotten and forlorn at the back of the cupboard, never to fulfil the greatness they were destined for.
Weve called Taste Master Loyd Grossman to the rescue of these poor defenceless ingredients, not to mention our own taste buds. In this tantalising new video he offers up tips and advice on spicing up your life
well, your dinner table first, but who knows where trying new things in the kitchen could lead you?

Man-bags and moisturisers are redefining modern-day masculinity, 60% of modern day men proudly claim to be masters of the steam iron but only 10% consider themselves to be handy under the bonnet of a car. All this is a far cry from the men in the 1920s and 1940s, 73% of whom considered themselves car-savvy. Only a quarter knew how to turn the iron on though!
The Brylcreem Mandom Report 2008 shows the 21st Century man is somewhat self-obsessed spending an average 26% longer in front of the mirror than men in the 1940s. Men are also currently much more in touch with their emotional side with 85% claiming they wouldnt be ashamed to cry in front of others. In the 1920s however, 40% of men said they would be ashamed to cry in front of others.
The report interviewed men from 18 to over 80 and clearly shows a great shift in both male attitudes and behaviour. With over 61% of those under 29 admitting they dont consider themselves masculine today, its clear weve reached a ball-breaking time. Domestic and public boundaries have blurred over the decades, causing confusion over where the masculine line is now drawn.
Women want their men back, complaining that men have stepped a bit too far in the feminine direction. 60% of women aged between 18 and 29 say they would like the man to take control of their relationship. Two-thirds also say modern men arent as masculine as men from years gone by.
Founding Editor of Loaded Magazine James Brown comments: Masculinity is best defined by a focus on competitiveness, strength and rationality, yet The Brylcreem Mandom Report 2008 indicates that modern men have become far more openly emotional, are more focused on image and appearance, and are increasingly taking on notions more often associated with women.

British women will be spring-cleaning a lot more than their cupboards this year as 79% admit their lives are far too cluttered. 3 in 5 say part of the clutter is unwanted friends with nearly a third saying they had 5 friends or more they wouldnt mind never seeing again. Maybe we should be more selective about who we add on Facebook?
The research, conducted by confectioners Ricola, shows women are no better when it comes to their handbags or their homes. Nearly half (47%) have missed calls on their mobiles because they cant find the phone in their handbag before the other person has rung off. Considering a quarter keep 15 or more items in their handbags at any one time this is hardly surprising!
A further 78% admit their homes are cluttered with junk and although 68% plan to de-clutter their homes and their handbags, they never quite get round to it.
If this is all sounding a bit too familiar, dont panic! Simply click below to watch this exclusive video where TV psychologist Anjula Mutanda explains how to de-clutter your handbag and your life. By clearing out the old you can make room for the new.

21st century kids are fussier than ever about what they will and wont eat, posing problems for mums and dads who want to ensure their children eat well.
Almost half of parents admit to feeling under pressure from a fussy child to put certain things in their lunchboxes. Obliging your child might avoid a temper tantrum but almost two thirds admit to including the same foods in their childrens lunchboxes from day to day, raising more worries about healthy eating, just as black market tuck shops are popping up in schools all over the country.
Even if they steer away from the sweets, many children are still choosing the unhealthy chips and beans option at school. Food choices may have been more basic 20 years ago but they were also more natural and less processed. Over half of parents actually think that nutrition was better back in the day, when the most popular packed lunch was a cheese sandwich.
Celebrity chef Lesley Waters knows the challenges parents face and for that reason is offering parents a step-by-step guide to cooking up tasty but healthy treats for the family. Her recipes all include Edam to make sure kids get enough calcium as they grow and provide plenty of taste while also being nutritious, to keep everyone happy.

Parents may claim to be providing their children with healthy, home-cooked meals, but research into kids eating habits tells a different story. New research by The Honey Association shows that 86% of parents claim to cook entirely, or mostly from scratch every evening, but when children were polled about the foods they are actually eating, processed foods with poor nutritional value came at the top of the list.
Nine out of ten kids have eaten chips before and eight out of ten have tried burgers but nearly 40% had never tried broccoli, two thirds had never tried broad beans and 82% had never eaten an aubergine.
With this in mind, the Honey Association has put together a new video featuring nutritionist Anita Bean, who demonstrates how easy it is to incorporate natural, healthy ingredients into kid-friendly recipes. Anita whips up a batch of delicious blueberry and honey muffins, and offers parents easy nutritional advice to help them freshen up mealtimes.
Anita Beans honey recipes are captured in a free glossy booklet called Honeytime Anytime, available on request via email: info@honeyassociation.com

It's a fact. Flexible working is all the rage, and for good reason. Chaining employees to their desks and ruling their working lives with an iron fist is a practice that's dead and buried.
Having said that bosses shouldn't feel pressured to give away perks that lower productivity. Flexible working doesn't mean letting your team turn up when they want, surf the internet all day or take long luxurious lunches. A "well run" organisation makes its staff want to come to work in the mornings, work hard during the day, and feel rewarded when they leave at night. The trick is to boost morale by helping your team to work smarter, and it doesn't take drastic changes to make a big difference. Perks should be constructive and mutually beneficial. A few subtle upgrades or tweaks here and there will enhance productivity and staff drive no end.

The fallout from the banking credit crunch is making would-be homebuyers worried about their chances of getting on the UK property ladder. Despite the cut in the Bank of England base rate to five per cent, the cost of many mortgages appears to be going in the opposite direction.
While its easy to lose hope of ever becoming proud property owners, Richard Way urges people to consider investing in a property abroad, where your money stretches further, and where growth potential is high.
For the average price of a one bedroomed flat in London (£305,000) you could bag yourself a four bedroomed stone house in Normandy and an alpine ski apartment not far from Grenoble. Or a beautiful villa on sunny Costa Blanca and a one bedroom apartment east of Malaga and Marbella.
Here to tell us about what overseas investment has to offer and how to go about buying your dream property abroad is Richard Way, Editor of A Place in the Sun magazine

Are you leaving university soon? Are you worried about how youre going to cope with the gruelling process of filling out job application forms and interviews? If so youre not alone, according to new research a lot of people stumble through the interview phase. A surprising four out of five confess to have cried, fallen over, spilt coffee on themselves or had a coughing fit during an interview leaving a less than desirable first impression! Nearly two in five people also admit to lying in interviews and 18% have yawned their way through the process. A bold one in twenty have actually walked out mid-interview because they were less than impressed with the experience.
Obviously if you find yourself in the interview seat in the next couple of months then we wouldnt recommend any of the above as a plan of attack. According to the research by Sainsburys, who believe that having an affinity with the people you work with means you get more done and have more fun doing it with people who share your attitudes and values; there are some simple ways of engaging with the interviewer. Almost eight out of ten said that they maintained eye contact to create a connection with the interviewer and respondents also sent positive body language messages by smiling (78%) and offering up a firm handshake (58%).
You might also want to be careful about what information you put up on social networking sites. Over a quarter of respondents admitted they didnt edit content on their online profile despite the risk that an employer could stumble upon it. Social networking is a great way to enhance relationships with potential co-workers, however it pays to bear in mind what kind of information and pictures youre uploading and who is going to view them.

Britains first Tommelier cooks up a tribute to the cornerstone of Italian cooking
Britains interest in good food has certainly come a long way in recent years and the popularity of celebrity chefs is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact British foodies are more curious about food than ever before with two-thirds of us eager to learn more about taste and how our taste buds, flavours and food combinations work.
Foods from all over the world have become staples to the British diet and no other cuisine is as familiar as Italian. Yet there may be more to your spag bol and margarita than you think Italian food veteran and tomato doyen Paulo Battisel has become the first ever Tommelier. Using the skills of a sommelier to pick the finest tomato vines, Battisel has worked with Pizza Expresss head chef to develop its new tomato-mad menu and source the perfect tomatoes for British taste buds.

Being a parent these days isnt easy. Not only do you have to be a chauffeur, a counsellor, a cleaner and an expert chef but now you also have to be a nutritionist as well. Although getting your child to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg every day is important its not the only factor to consider when it comes to your childs diet. Research by Petits Filous shows that 9 out of 10 parents think their child is getting enough calcium, but parents are unclear how much calcium children actually need. 74% of parents wrongly believing that 2 portions of dairy a day offers sufficient calcium for their child when in fact at least 3 portions of dairy every day will meet calcium needs to help develop strong bones.
If youre worried about whether or not your child is getting enough calcium, click below to watch an exclusive video hosted by Dr Rob Hicks and Yoplait registered dietitian Elphee Medici. They will talk you through ways of making sure your child gets enough bone building calcium in their diet, explaining which foods are good sources of calcium and how easy it is to meet all your childs daily calcium needs through three portions of dairy every day. As well as all this Dr Rob Hicks will also be explaining the benefits of ensuring your child gets plenty of calcium in their early years as well as hints and tips to help your children develop strong healthy bones.

Despite a barrage of campaigns a staggering amount of us are also dodging our five a day duty by failing to eat the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Poor quality nutrition is an epidemic of our times. With busier lifestyles and more processed and packaged food eaten than ever before, its not surprising we are unaware of our own nutritional needs and the benefits that can come from making small changes to our diets.
To try and help us overcome this, and offer people a younger, healthier lifespan, specialists have stepped in to offer people across the UK the first online personal nutritional analysis service. NutriProfile.org uses a scientifically validated food frequency (diet) questionnaire which asks the user a number of simple questions regarding their weekly food intake, as well as age, height and personal health goals to create an entirely personalised report. The free personal report demonstrates whats lacking in an individuals diet and includes specific food recommendations to address these deficiencies its like having a one-on-one nutritional consultation.
It is hoped that this new service will help us have a better understanding of our dietary requirements. Our video offers exclusive advice from nutrition experts Dr Adam Carey and Dr Sarah Brewer

£13m of new pension contributions offers doctors, teachers and government employees the chance to change the world for the better
Public sector workers, including doctors, teachers and local government employees, stand to benefit from £13 million in new pension contributions when they volunteer with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) according to a new government announcement. Volunteers will be working in some of the poorest countries in the world and will help VSO further their fifty-year fight against world poverty.
Previously some public servants have been reluctant to take a career break because of the impact this would have on their pensions contributions. Now however the government will be reimbursing pension contributions whilst volunteers are away through the use of added pension benefits on return. Any current public servant who returns to a pensionable UK public service job after an overseas volunteer assignment starting between April 2008 and March 2011 and lasting between 7 and 24 months will be eligible for the incentive which will lower the financial impact for individuals who volunteer.
Presently only around 350 UK public servants per year take up such assignments, from a public service of some 4 million. It is hoped that this new government incentive will make a significant difference to the number of public sector workers entering the programme which has been a life changing experience for thousands of past volunteers, and the communities volunteers have helped.
Judith Brodie, Director of VSO comments This move demonstrates that the Government is supporting UK public servants to undertake structured assignments of voluntary service in poor countries, and also encouraging them to return to enrich the UK public service with the experiences and skills gained.

We've all sat in the cinema, munching our popcorn while watching movie trailers that showcase all the latest blockbusters. The back of book blurb has been the traditional method of capturing the imagination of readers
until now. The launch of the first ever book trailers are set to change the industry for good and bring books to life before they are even published. This new trend hopes to attract a new audience to reading who wouldn't otherwise have heard of the author.
Three up and coming student directors from the National Film and Television School (NFTS) have been selected by a panel of judges, to produce a 90 second film based on three forthcoming books.
Chamoun Issa was chosen to adapt Small World by Matt Beaumont into a mere 90 second film. Its estimated that seven million potential start-ups could flounder through fear before they even open for business
New research has found that in as little as three years time the self-start business sector could be set to explode with millions of aspiring entrepreneurs currently drawing up business plans. Unfortunately, due to Britain being a nation of serial self-doubters over a third of them could be lost.
Fear of failure is the number one barrier to starting up a new business according to the research by Orange Business Services. A third of respondents said low self-confidence was the reason preventing them from going it alone, suggesting a worrying lack of faith in ourselves as a nation.
Those that do successfully launch their own business are most likely to be women as men are twice as likely to be put off by the pressures that starting a business would have on other areas of their lives. Gender stereotypes are still at work however as the majority of women are attracted to creative and childcare industries whereas men prefer IT, construction and manual trades
The British ethnic population will also be major business contenders as three quarters of this social group are currently giving serious thought to launching their own enterprises.
Here to tell us a little bit more about the secrets to business success and how to overcome the fear factor is former winner of The Apprentice, Tim Campbell

British consumers experience food blindness when it comes to the amount we waste. Figures released today reveal that 90% of UK consumers do not realise how much food they throw out each week. Our negligence equates to 6.7 million tonnes of wasted food being shipped off to landfill sites and over £8 billion of our hard earned cash being squandered on produce we never get round to eating. The figures released as part of WRAPs Love Food Hate Waste campaign, further highlighted that a third of all food is being thrown away so for every three bag of shopping we bring home, we effectively put one straight in the bin. Once rotting in landfill sites this waste then releases 15 million tonnes of Co2 every year. Preventing this would be the same as taking one in five cars off the UK roads, showing just how much difference a little bit of thought could make. The question is why are we doing this to our planet and our pockets? The campaign hopes to be able to provide consumers with information on what simple steps can be taken to combat the problem, which has a significant environmental impact. Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Joan Ruddock, said I am delighted to support WRAPs Love Food Hate Waste campaign. The UK is leading the way in terms of helping people to reduce their carbon footprint and providing practical solutions for combating climate change.Ainsley Harriott, the popular TV chef is supporting the campaign, along with several other chefs and well known celebrities: The amount of food we throw away is criminal and we all need to take action and start changing our behaviour. Thats why Im supporting Love Food Hate Waste, says Ainsley Harriott. You dont have to be a chef to know how to cut down on food waste, you just need to care about your food and your pocket and the rest will follow.

The National Lottery Double Rollover has finally come of age as it hits the big 2-1 this Wednesday.
Turning 21 is a milestone for anyone. It is a landmark age when a young person enters the world of adulthood full of possibilities and new experiences. Winning the lottery on any occasion would change your life and would be the key to a whole new millionaire lifestyle. With the possibility of an estimated £10 million jackpot this Wednesday, it really does make you wonder
what would you do with so much money?
Over 10,000 people have won a share of a Lotto Jackpot since 1994. In 1998 Roy Gibney from Grimsby couldnt believe his luck when he found he had the £7.5 million winning ticket and has since embraced the millionaire lifestyle, creating his own fishing lake complete with swans and installing a giant-sized chess board for his garden. Last month postal administrator Angela Kelly made lottery history when she won £35,425,411.80 on the National Lotterys Euromillions.
The only way to win is to play and remember the winners are not the only ones to benefit from a Double Rollover. Over a quarter of all revenue made by the National Lottery goes to Good Causes in health, education, environment, community and charity across the UK. Over £20 billion has been raised for Good Causes to date. So everyones a winner!
So what would you do with so much money? Take a holiday? Buy a new house? Get your own personal chef? Or maybe even an exotic island far far away? We asked a few people what they would do if their lucky numbers came up

With the new gardening season now well underway, and forecasters predicting another hot summer following the warmest April on record1, a new survey2 carried out by WRAPs (Waste & Resources Action Programme) Know Your Compost Campaign, has revealed that over a quarter (28%) of the UKs gardeners believe they can already see signs of climate change in their gardens.
Earlier blooming Spring bulbs is the most obvious sign cited by gardeners (60%), while nearly a quarter (24%) have also noticed an increase in the amount of garden waste being produced, such as grass trimmings and prunings.
Encouragingly, 56% understand the important role that recycling garden waste plays in helping to combat climate change, but its a different story when it comes to putting this into practice. One in five (19%) choose to use peat-free composts and around a third (34%) of gardeners regularly home compost. As the number of people with access to a garden in the UK increases currently 85% theres still more opportunities for gardeners to help.
Campaign supporter, Diarmuid Gavin, is giving the green fingered a timely reminder about the ways in which we can help reduce the impact of climate change.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) can be caused by a traumatic injury to the head, such as a road accident or a fall and can have devastating effects. It can affect a childs memory, physical skills, ability to concentrate in class, relationship development amongst peers and teachers and in some cases, it can even alter their personality.

The illegal trade in protected wildlife is booming and is second only to drugs in volume and money. The worlds rarest and best loved species are most at risk; caged bears milked for their bile, tigers hunted for their skins and bones for tiger wine, elephants poached for their ivory, gorillas killed for their meat and sharks butchered alive.
Shamefully, the industry is worth over £5billion a year and until now, any conservationist standing in a poachers path was likely to be shot dead. Ruthlessness is rife and animals with no means of defending themselves are tortured and slaughtered to the very brink of extinction.
What this merciless mob dont know is that they will soon be on the run themselves, as special agent Steve Galster sets out on a mission to hunt them down. His new TV show on Animal Planet, Crime Scene Wild sees him patrolling poaching hotspots, hunting down dealers and serving up some long overdue justice alongside an armed team.
Steves quest is a renewed effort to awaken people to some disturbing truths, and to finally hit back at those responsible for countless acts of atrocious animal cruelty.
Foremost in his arsenal is the cutting-edge application of forensics and DNA technology. Steve has teamed up DNA experts around the world, who are spearheading the new techniques, crucial in taking the fight against wildlife crime to the next level.
