The countdown continues…  We are now officially up to 76 Music Education Bloggers!  There are only 4 months to go in this campaign and we are already over 75% of our target goal of 100 Music education bloggers.   I am very pleased with the progress of this campaign and personally, have been working, as much as I can and very hard with this ambitious undertaking.   For every blog that I realease as a “ME Blogger” there are 5 that are SPAM, not related, totally whacky, or simply not what we’re looking for as an official ME blog.

ME Bloggers take note: In preparation for the publiciity and articles that I am going to be writing and hope to be publishing via “snail” methods after the official end of the campaign, I am going to be going back through and checking to see if all the ME Bloggers are remaining true to our campaign pledges!  Nothing fancy, but I don’t want to have  ME blogger listed that is not active or currently inactive as we approach January 1st, of 2009…the deadline.  What do I mean by this?

Here’s what I mean:  As a ME blogger, we pledged to “post regularly” about a topic that is “interesting to you, your students, the music audience as whole, etc. -that is related to music education and/or music technology in a classroom environment… Along those lines, we’re not expecting everyone to blog everyday, every week, or even every couple of weeks, but we need ME Bloggers that are actively blogging as often as they can and regurarly…

We agreed not to “covet” all of our materials and share many of them, freely with the world…This is part of the “Global conversation” that I keep sharing with you all…  Don’t forget to comment and get in on others conversations!!!   If you’re a ME Blogger make sure you take advantage of the Carnival that Joel and I started just so we can continue to “get the word” out about Music and Education!  Amy Burns just finished a great carnival, if you missed it -check it out at her site and see what the fuss is all about!

You can find out all of the 100 Music Education Blogger Information, ideas, goals, et. here:
http://mustech.net/100-me-bloggers  Check it out today and join or re-energize yourself!

As we start a new school year, I invite you to read a ponder a few posts that link the “Spirit of the Olympics” to what we do as Music Educators written by fellow ME Bloggers.  I encourage you to think about what was written and comment about them as you have time:

Richard McCready- Tech Toys and Tunes:
ADHD kids listen to music -shocker!

Travis J. Weller - Composing Like Mad:
Lessons Learned from Michael Phelps

Dr. Joseph Pisano - MusTech.net:
Citius, Altius, Fortius - Faster, Higher, Stronger…

Take a moment to reflect, learn, and even been inspired to be a better teacher, friend, roll model, or whatever it might be.   Keep those ME Blogger Posts and Comments Coming!!!!  Maybe now is the time to make some “New Year Resolutions”…. and keep them!  It’s probably a better time for teachers anyway!

Without further prologue… Here is the current list of Music Education Bloggers (Please say hello to the new folks and re-acquaint yourselves with the veterans! and don’t forget to repost this list!!!):

If you have not been following along here at MusTech.Net…it’s time to catch up!   Travis Weller and I, decided to test some of the educational “outer limits” of using SKYPE in the classroom at a performance in May of 2008.   What we accomplished was nothing short of “ground breaking” in the music education/performance and related arenas.  At Travis’ Spring Instrumental Concert we SKYPED three of the composers of pieces being performed that night, LIVE via VIDEO, into the concert to talk with the performers, conductor, and audience that were present that evening.  The composers SKYPED in were, Dr. Andrew Boysen, Dr. Scott Watson, and Mr. Brian Balmages.

Today, on the front page of Campus Technology, is an article by Linda L. Briggs, about our project entitled: Bringing Composers into Classrooms Through Skype.   Travis and I have been interviewing with a number of folks about our usage of SKYPE in the educational setting and this is one of the articles that has resulted from that collaboration with the SKYPE folks and others.

I have started a 4-part series about our SKYPE CONCERT and have finished the first two parts; you may find those articles here:

Part I, Out of the Box, Connecting the Audience, Performers, and Composers through Skype
Part II, Connecting the Audience, Performers, and Composers

The other two parts are forthcoming and hopefully will be completed by the end of September 2008.

Here are a couple of recent mentions about SKYPE found in articles at MusTech.Net:
Should We Utilize Technology in the Music Classroom? Questions to Ask First!
Using Skype in the Educational Setting: Skyping Experts Into The Classroom

The official citing of the Briggs article is:

Linda L Briggs, “Bringing Composers into Classrooms Through Skype,” Campus Technology, 8/27/2008, http://www.campustechnology.com/article.aspx?aid=66727

Please forward this to all of your music friends and colleagues, you can email, print, and share from the top of this post, just click on what you would like to accomplish!

Hello all,

As with everyone it’s been more than busy with the start of the college year.   We’ve had a killer band camp and the Marching Wolverines are stronger than ever (And We’re Going To Disney in October!).   I am working to having the ME Blogger campaign back on track, as far as my administering of it, and up-to-date as of this September.

Just a note, I will be looking back over the ME Bloggers in the next month to make sure that you all are keeping you’re commitments to being a ME Blogger.  At the end of this campaign, I will be writing a  number of articles for publication and I want to make sure that all the ME Bloggers are active bloggers and not just “cruising” along.  The ME Bloggers are the FIRST generation of Music Education bloggers and we need to be the examples for countless generations to come..we have to set the standard. :)

Find out what we are all about here: http://mustech.net/100-me-bloggers.   I am going to be “pushing” for a community of people that comment, not only here but internet-wide over the next year…both of ourselves and of our students, and, musician friends.  Take the time to comment on posts you like, both here and everywhere; even if it’s just to say, GREAT JOB!. :)

Doug Butchy has requested that I come up with a way to start a Twitter Music Education Group (Thanks Doug for the idea).  I’ve figured out how to do this out and will be posting about it soon.   You can always follow my twitters at http://twitter.com/pisanojm the page is Black &  Gold for the STEELERS!

I’ve decided to use Wordpress at the CMS for the NU Chapter of Phi Beta Mu (International Bandmasters Honorary) and am working toward finishing their/our site soon.  If you want to see this progress from “root” to something in the next two weeks you can check out the site and progress here: http://pbmpa.org.  I’m also going to be using Wordpress for our PA Intercollegiate Band Masters site, which I will have up…TBA!!! Stay “tuned” for that site. :)

Don’t give up on  your music program, if you need help make sure you check out http://supportmusic.com. I’ve posted about this in the past, do a search in the sidebar for related posts.   Also check under the advocacy section of mustech.net.

If you are looking for a guest speaker, music advocate, or clinician for your dept. or school don’t be afraid to ask me.  I work with many schools and many different sized budgets.  I’ll be posting my upcoming schedule soon in the sidebars of mustech.net for everyone to see and I hope that we’ll be able to come across each other sometime soon.   If you are looking to do something OUT OF THE BOX, I’ll try SKYPING into your classroom if I have the time.  We are moving along on the SKYPE frontiers and integrating it heavily into a number of courses.  Check out the series of posts about SKYPE at mustech.net for more information.

Finally, if you have any “AMAZING” ideas about how to integrate your Music Education Class with technology, let me know about them.  Maybe we can work toward making those ideas a reality together or with others of similiar mind.

The Olympic motto, Citius, Altius, Fortius, is a Hendiatris, or a figure of speech.   These three word phrases were typical in ancient Greece and Rome (Veni, Vidi, Vici, etc.).    Citius, Altius, and Fortius translate to English as Faster, Higher, and Stronger.  The Olympics bring about a sense and feeling of the common good and a brotherhood among humanity.

One can hardly watch the Olympics without being awestruck by the excellence that is achieved by the athletes of the games and the feeling of goodwill that is perpetuated by the event.  Although perfection is rarely seen (if even possible), excellence abounds and we as musicians should literally, take note of what it is that makes these Olympians truly great.

Let us start off our new school year by reflecting on how our music students, music ensembles, and even we as teachers and educators, can obtain excellence within our music programs:

  1. We must first know what excellence is…
What are the best examples of our music, ensembles, teaching techniques, etc.?  Without
an acute awareness of “the best” we are blindsided by our own ignorance and any comparison
that we make of what our achivements might be are foolery.
  2. We must be goal oriented and disciplined…
What are our musical goals and what must be done to achieve them?  Without a goal and
the discipline necessary to achieve it, we are simply wandering quickly to nowhere.
  3. We must believe in our cause…
Without believing in what we are doing, we are destined to mediocrity at best.
  4. We must persevere…
As students and teachers, we must not be afraid to fail in order to achieve. Whether something
we are working toward takes one time or one thousand times, we must be ready to make
the commitment to continually improve and move forward.   Even the most disciplined and goal-
oriented of people must persevere to achieve things worthwhile.
  5. We must strive for perfection…
Perfection can never truly be achieved.  There will always be someone better, or something that
can be done better.   Our struggle for perfection leads us to excellence in what we do.  In order
to be excellent…we must first know what excellence is… See number 1 above...

As we look forward to our new school year and the music that we will teach about and perform,  let us strive to be:

Citius- Faster with regard to being accepting of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
Altius- Higher with regard to our standards for ourselves, others, and in everything that we do AND
Fortius- Stronger in our commitment to making excellence the outcome of all of our endeavours.

Here’s to a great year of music!

This is the second post in a series about an “Out of the Box” experiment by myself and Travis Weller about using SKYPE as a bridge to connect the audience, performers, and composers, together, during a concert.   This post will contain a flash video of the highlights of that concert.  The video is over 20 minutes long and will allow you to see the process which we used to make this hybrid concert a reality.

The video was created using Pinnacle Studio 10. and an incredible freeware flash converter that makes embedding video, like this, into a website with playback controls a breeze, Free Video to Flash Converter.  This  video is hosted here at mustech.net; please let me know if you would like a copy of it to use for educational purposes.

The Bridging the Gap Between the Composers and Audience Video in Brief:

  1. 0:00 Color Bars
  2. 0:10 Title Sequence
  3. 0:20 Brief Introduction and description
  4. 0:46 Part I, Concert Introduction
  5. 3:22 Part II, Composer, Mr. Brian Balmages
  6. 8:04 Part III, Composer, Dr. Andrew Boysen
  7. 15:06 Part IV, Composer, Dr. Scott Watson
  8. 19:40 Part V, Ending Text, Wrap up
  9. 20:24 END

I would especially like to thank Grove City College Music Education Majors: Brad Volek, Emily Maize, Matthew Haas, and Krista Schmidt for their help with this project.

The next post in this series, Part III, will focus on the hardware and software details of this series…  the “What was used?”, and “How did we use it?” aspects…

We all can “talk the talk” when it comes to supporting Fine Arts Education among our friends, but what about really doing something about it on a local level?  Can we do anything at all?  To quote Bob the Builder… “Yes, We Can!”.

Local School Board meetings are not just for conducting the day-to-day affairs of the school districts, they also provide a public forum for discussion.  Literally, there is mandated time, in all school board meetings for guests, visitors, and residents of the district to express their opinions, concerns, and praise for the the anything related to the school district.  You have the right and quite possibly, the moral obligation to go to these meetings when something concerns you about your school district.

Recently, I was asked to sign a petition about the perceived lack of FINE ARTS facility space in a proposed new middle school building of a local district.   When I became aware of this, I immediately started to gather what information I could about the subject.  Fully realizing, that I may not have all the pertinent information, I decided to draft a letter to the school board and present it, personally, to the school board when they met next.

Thankfully, the school board was comprised of well-meaning, intelligent folks who really do have the interest of the children and their education in the fore-front of their minds.   After a chance to speak for about 5 minutes about the importance of Music/Arts Education in our schools (in a meaningful and non-threatening way), the school board responded to me with more questions for me and at the end of the meeting took the time to go over the plans of the proposed new building, personally, with me and other interested parties.

As I said, knowingly, I didn’t have “all the information” going into the meeting, there are always, at least, two sides of a conversation…  They explained some of their decisions with me and a number of other concerned citizens, and helped us to understand their thought process in this regard.  All in all, I believe their proposed building was adequate for the current needs of the Arts/Music program, but I again stressed the importance of looking toward the future, and planning for success in the programs -not just continued current ”numbers”.  I also talked with the board about “keeping a watchful eye” on the Fine Arts programs, supporting the children in continued and sustained Arts/Music education, and not simply treating the Arts/Music programs as something extra…

I also explained to the board that Music and Arts Teachers have every bit of educational credentials as other teachers and needed to be afforded the same rights, privileges, and facility spaces as other teachers.   Music teachers using “carts” as a classroom is not only a slap in the face to the teacher but also provides the students with a lesser music education and experience due to the unfortunate circumstance.

What follows is the letter I personally handed to all the school board members before I spoke to them (taking out the name of the school, despite that the document is now part of the public record).   You will find it very cordial, positive, and constructive.  Please feel free to use any part of it for your own needs.

Click on the image below to expand it here and/or download a template of this document (PDF) for you to change and utilize as you see fit for your own music advocacy needs.

We can make a difference for the Fine Arts programs in our schools if we have the courage to step out and stand up for what we believe in!  If you need help in finding specific scholarly articles to help you with your “fight” for music or arts in the schools, be sure to check out http://supportmusic.com.  It has a wealth of information waiting there for you to use and explore in this regard.

Do I think we/I had any impact on the School Board’s future thinking about the building and the importance of  Fine Arts Support in the district? … You Betcha!   In order to be heard, we must first speak.

This is the first part of an unknown number of posts about a first of a kind instrumental concert that, literally, connected the composers of the music being performed with the audience, conductor, and ensemble. The concert/event took place on May 6th, 2008 at Mercer High School in PA.

Travis J. Weller (noted composer and ME Blogger), and I decided that we wanted to do something, spectacular, out of the box, and -to our knowledge, never been done before that integrated technology, a live performance, and connected with the students in very meaningful way. The now famous SKYPE CONCERT concert band performance at Mercer High School was the result of our brainstorming.

After considerable leg work, we were able to, graciously, have Dr. Andrewy Boysen, Dr. Scott Watson, and Mr. Brian Balmages agree to appear, LIVE, at the concert via SKYPE. This idea stemmed from prior work that I have written about and done. Last December I posted about how easy it was for any music teacher to use SKYPE to have a number of experts appear in their classroom. This time, Travis and I decided to see if we could, on a much grander scale, SKYPE experts into a concert setting. We succeeded.

In the next post I will describe the technical details of how and what we used to make this happen.  Above  is an embedded slide-show of the event in 24 pictures. If you would like to view these pictures on a grander scale, please visit this Picasa Link. I also have edited a 20 minute video of the event that will be posted as part of this series.

I would personally like to thank Dr. Boysen, Dr. Watson, and Mr. Balmages for their willingness to make this, as of now, one-of-a-kind concert, a reality. The student performers, audience, and school faculty and administration in attendance could not believe what a positive and amazing experience this was for all those in attendance and literally sparked a dialog about it and what can be done educational like this that goes on to this day! More to come! Stay tuned…

I’ve been having a couple of issues with MusTech.Net so if things have been a little “different” with your experience, I apologize!

I’m still waiting for the PodPress update to be published. So you will not be able to listen to the podcasts directly from MusTech.Net until that is resolved.  I’ve also had issues with my ODEO feed in the right Sidebar.  It was causing a script error with the ODEO player.

Finally, I totally messed the site up when I was upgrading a number of plugins that I use and lost 3 of my last posts (Despite by daily backup!!!!) so I had to reconstruct those.

Oh well!  Things are “kinda” back on track now!  Well I’m at it I might as well also state that I’m about 6 weeks behind on the ME Blogger Project.  My goal is to get that turned around very soon!  Stay tuned!

Even though I can’t post here as I normally do due to the problem with PodPress.  I’ve went ahead and put our new podcast up at at our Podomatic Host Site.  With this episode we have begun offering two versions of our podcast: A Standard mp3 based podcast and an ENHANCED podcast that is in the wma format.

The ENHANCED podcast will allow anyone who has downloaded the file to not only have a great audio of our show, but also have referenced websites automatically be opened, in time, as the podcast plays.  It actually is a totally cool and more educational way to experience a podcast.

Until I get them “up” here, you can find our latest podcast, entitled HD Radio, Earsets, RIS and More!, at our Podomatic host site:

For the Standard Podcast follow this link:

For the Enhanced Podcast, follow this link (make sure you check the notes within the post at Podomatic so that you can have the full experience of the enhancements!):

I’ll be posting these epidosdes at MusTech.net as I normally do when all the kinks are worked out with WordPress and PodPress…
