Shakespearean Acting Classes Offered for Children

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in downtown Galax welcomes back acting instructor Linda Donnell who will teach "Shakespeare for Children." The class will meet every Monday for six weeks from 5:00-6:00pm from October 20-November 24 for ages 8-12.
Students will learn many aspects of Shakespearean theater including dances of the Elizabethan Era, speaking sonnets, voice training and theater games. It will be age appropriate and very active.
Conservatory owner and artistic director Dr. Barbara Johnson has known Donnell for many years and feels she is a wonderful asset. "Her talents in the performing arts enhance our programs at the Conservatory," Johnson said. "Children in the area have this rare opportunity to learn Shakespearean acting and voice training which will enrich their cultural development."
As an actor and dancer, Donnell brings with her a diverse background. She received her early dance training at the Ellis DuBoulay School of Ballet in Chicago and also studied ballet and modern dance at Wake Forest University and the NC School of the Arts.
Donnell has trained under some of the finest theater artists in the US and from abroad. While at the NC School of the Arts, she studied acting with Yuri Belov and circus with Dikki Ellis of New York City's Big Apple Circus. She also trained in acting, voice, Shakespeare, movement and mime under British Professor Emeritus James Dodding.
As an actor, Donnell has performed at the Cherry Orchard Theatre in Ararat VA, the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem NC, Wake Forest University, the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy NC and the Renaissance Theatre Company in High Point NC.
She is ardent about teaching and has been sharing her love of acting and dance for almost 20 years. "I have a passion for acting and a love of children," Donnell said. "I am delighted to have this opportunity to teach again at the Conservatory."
The cost for the classes is $75 per child. Space is limited. To register or for more information, call the Conservatory at 276-236-2105.
The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre is located at 119 W Grayson Street in Downtown Galax. Entrance is in the back under the covered porch.

Call for Artists – “Our Beloved 1908”, Independence , Va.
This is the centennial year for the Historic 1908 Courthouse of Grayson County in Independence , Virginia . Since this is the most recognized building in Grayson County with its unique architecture and prominent location in the center of town, it has been the subject of many photographs, paintings, and drawings.

In celebration of the 100th birthday of this historic landmark, the Courthouse Foundation is inviting all artists, young and old, amateur and professional, who have created an original likeness of the 1908 Courthouse to show their work in a grand exhibition from September 7th through October 12th this fall. There will be no awards given since each artist who participates is already a winner.

All interested artists are invited to bring one to three items to the Baldwin Auditorium on the second floor of the 1908 Courthouse on Friday, September 4, 2008, from 5:30 to 8pm; or Saturday, September 6th from 10 to 12 am. There is no entry fee, and no judging. All art must be easily wall hung, such as paintings, photographs, textiles, or drawings. Pictures should be no more than 32” x 40” including frame. All art work should have a tag with the artist’s name, address, and telephone number attached. Sale of items will be left to the artists. The 1908 Courthouse is protected by a security system.

An Artists Reception and opening will be held Sunday, September 7th 3-5pm. There will be no awards given. Each artist is invited to attend for a group photo and recognition for their ‘Beloved 1908’.

The Courthouse is open from 10 to 4 everyday except Sunday and the exhibit will be available for viewing during these hours. The exhibit will be featured during the Wine Tasting at the Courthouse on Saturday, September 13th and during the Fall Festival at the Courthouse on Saturday, October 11th. Artist will pick-up their entries on Sunday, October 12 from 3 to 5pm or the week of October 13th.

Stage Set for July 25 & 26 Beach Music Event

Groseclose, VA July 11, 2008 - Preparations are nearing completion for what is being billed as one of the largest beach music and oldies events ever staged in Southwestern Virginia. Set for July 25 and 26, BeachFest ’08 will present eight bands, many considered to be Beach Music legends, in Davis Valley Winery’s state-of-the-art amphitheatre.

The talent lineup includes the Tams, the Catalinas, The Embers, and the Fantastic Shakers, all of whom have songs on most top 100 beach songs lists. Beach Music fans who attend this event can shag to such classics as I Love Beach Music by the Embers, Be Young - Be Foolish - Be Happy and What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am by the Tams, Summertime is Calling Me by the Catalinas, Myrtle Beach Days and Shakin’ the Shack by the Fantastic Shakers, and scores of other beach music and oldies hits.
The Carolina Beach Music Academy’s 2007group of the year, Jim Quick and Coastline will perform, along with Sammy O’Banion and Mardi Gras, the Entertainers, and the Kings.

“We have worked very hard to present a first-class event,” said winery owner, Rusty Cox. “We’re bringing in a dance floor which we will set up right in front of the stage for the shag dancers to strut their stuff and our big natural amphitheatre is perfect for just sitting back and enjoying the music and the performers.”
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate for Friday evening’s performances, which begin at 6 p.m. Saturday’s performances start at 12 noon and tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. The best deal is the two-day weekend pass for $25.

A variety of food, Davis Valley’s award-winning wines, and other beverages will be available at the festival. However, Virginia’s ABC regulations prohibit bringing in other alcoholic beverages.
Among the food selections is a perennial crowd favorite, Davis Valley Winery’s Famous Buffalo Burgers. Buffalo are raised on winery-owned farm property not far from the winery itself.

Beach Music is a phenomenon that began in the Virginia and Carolinas coastal resort areas as an outgrowth of Rhythm & Blues music. Beach Music began evolving into its own genre in the 1950s and really took its own identity when a dance called the Shag - with its own rhythm and dance moves - evolved out of bop dancing. Now, there are Shag clubs all over the eastern U.S.

Mr. Cox reports that beach music fans from several adjacent states have purchased advance tickets.

Davis Valley Winery’s official address is Rural Retreat, Virginia but it is actually located near the community of Groseclose, just 1.5 miles from I-81 Exit 54 between Wytheville and Marion, Virginia.

BeachFest ’08 will be held rain or shine and everyone is urged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. Visit www.dvwinery.com or call 276-686-8855 for details and to purchase advance tickets. Advance tickets must be purchased by July 18.

The Fries VA Thursday night "Pickin' and Grinnin' " jam sessions are moving again - this time to their permanent home.

After an explosion in December 2007 wrecked the New River Trail Cafe where the jams were held, the sessions were relocated to Big Daddy's Restaurant in Fries. Although Big Daddy's has been very hospitable and accomodating, a little larger area was needed to provide enough space for all the musicians and listeners.

When Shaylyn's Stretch-a-Dollar closed, a group of local investors purchased the building. After meetings and discussions with the local musicians, and much planning, it was decided by the new owners to provide a home for the music that is so much a part of the Fries, Grayson County, and Carroll County heritage.

While having to start with few amenities, improvements to the music room, and the remaining portion of the building, are in sight. Planned additions include a stage, and possibly lighting and a sound system for the musicians.

Refreshments will be limited to coffee, soft drinks, and pre-packaged snacks in the beginning. Future plans hope to include a short order cafe with hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and ice cream.

The "Jam Sessions in Fries" will move to its new home in the former Shaylyn's Stretch-a-Dollar building at 472 W. Main Street on Thursday, July 3. Jams will begin at 6:30PM and go until "they decide to go home".

Everyone is welcome to come and join in whether just starting to play or an experienced musician. If you don't play, but enjoy listening to the area's traditional music and the fellowship and camaraderie that goes along with it, come on out and visit the "Jam Sessions in Fries" at its new home.

Admission as always is free, but donations will be appreciated.

The book, Between Two Spaces: Reflections on the Spiritual in Art by Dr. Halide Salam, Radford professor, will be showcased at the Authors on Grayson event during the Galax Leaf & String Festival, a Celebration of Music, Art and Literature. Dr. Salam’s paintings will be exhibited at City Gallery.

Not only can you purchase the book published by Pocahontas Press, Inc., but on Friday, June 13 between 5:00 & 8:00 PM you have the opportunity to meet the artist- author and see her work first hand. City Gallery Fine Art is honored to host Dr. Salam’s exhibit. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will hang through the end of June.

This Radford University professor has completed a collection of meditations on art and spirituality. She explores painting through the lens of her East Indian heritage to discover the synergy between heritage and expression. In homage to her parents, she also recalls the influence of family in her artistic development, tracing unique elements of her craft back to personal relationships. This book, complete with 18 color photographs of Dr. Salam’s paintings, offers us a glimpse into the world of an accomplished painter on the forefront of intercultural exploration.

Halide Salam received her Masters of Art in Painting from New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and her Ph.D from Texas Tech University in Fine Arts and teaches painting at Radford University, Radford, Virginia. She has been painting and exhibiting in national and international galleries, and presenting lectures and papers on art and art history, within and outside the United States as well. Her paintings are philosophical investigations to be viewed as spatial stations where creative forces are channeled through inner knowledge and intuition to manifest visual forms of self-recognition. Halide Salam's life pursuit has been to find answers to her perception of an incomprehensible reality, not unlike those Wassily Kandinsky or Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Thank You For Your Support!
Herbal greetings from Beagle Ridge

Welcome to spring- Okay, it may be the Ides of March, but I
am ready for spring! As parts of the country are underwater
or experiencing snow, we are lucky to have cold nights but
days in the 60's. My heart goes out to those of you who are
being ravaged by nature's wrath, I hope things return to normal
shortly.

These last few weeks have been perfect for winter clean-up.
This leads me to the subject of this newsletter, pruning and
winter clean up! This job is one of the most dreaded, not
because of the work involved but the comfort level in our own
expertise.

Through experience, (not always good results) I have learned
that in spite of how wonderful plants look after winter,
pruning is a must. Let me illustrate this for you. Once you
have plants which are sending out pretty new leaves on the end
of their winter ravaged branches, you will need to prune them
off; this has already begun on our Sage. As hard as it may be,
you need to cut this new growth off after a chance of severe
freeze is over. Look carefully at the base of your plants and
check for new growth at the base. Cut back to just above the
new growth at the base and it will send out a flush of new
growth for a lush, robust plant.

I used to think this was brutal. However, I tried it with
two plants, side by side. One severely pruned and one with just
a few of the tips cut back. I will never be hesitant again. By
the middle of May my results were amazing. One plant was
beautiful and full the other had spotty growth on the tips of
the stems and a little in the center. This graphic display has
convinced me to be "brutal" when pruning. Your plants will
thank you.

I will cut back the Lavender Walk and the Knot Garden
before we open, sometime after April 1st. We have learned to
be patient and wait for a new growth at the base of the plants
before we do our yearly pruning of our hardy herbs. Other herbs
which get this treatment are green Santolina, Southernwood and
Artemisia, Horehound, Catnip and Feverfew, most of the others
get a bit of trimming. If the rabbits didn't munch on the
Thymes all winter I would be trimming it too.
For aggressive spreaders such as mint, clip back the
stolons and compost or share with fellow gardeners. Anise
Hyssop and Lemon balm reseed everywhere so keep them in check
by digging up and potting up the new starts. Our Bee balm needs
dividing too,by thinning it and topdressing with compost I will
not only have new plants for sale but the remaining ones will
be rejuvenated. I know it seems harsh to rip out plants but if
you don't they will choke each other out and each year the
blooms will diminish and eventually the plants will die.

We will top-dress the gardens with mulch after removing the
remains of last years growth. For those of you new to our
newsletter I do not clean up our seed heads until spring so
they are standing for the birds. We do our garden cleanup in
the spring instead of the fall.

If you are in the Roanoke area this Saturday be sure to stop by
Virginia Western College for Scarborough Faire. The Herb
Society will be hosting an Herb Sale and I will be presenting a
program on Gardening for Wildlife. There will be several
activities/ demonstrations for children and adults. We will
have lots of plants for sale, and lots of ones to attract
butterflies to the garden. Let me know if you need additional
information and I hope to see you there.

For those of you who live a bit far to make the trip here is
some info on attracting butterflies to your garden. You need
two types of plants in the garden- one for the caterpillars-
Host/Larval plants and for the butterflies- Nectar plants.

Host plants include Parsley, Dill , Fennel, Rue, Hops, Passion
Flowers, Violets and even Honeysuckle. Without these herbs they
can't survive, these herbs are their food source for the
caterpillars. I know we usually think of caterpillars as an
enemy in the garden- but without them we wouldn't have
butterflies. Once they become butterflies they need nectar from
flowers. A wide variety of flowers will attract "flying
flowers" to your garden including Echinacea, Catnip, Lavender,
Sages including Pineapple Sage and hardy salvias), Marigold,
Calendula as well as annual herbs like Basil and Borage. Now,
how do you keep them off your parsley? My usual answer to this
is plant some for you and some for them.
Everybody is happy!**** I have a more complete list of these
plants on the website under Gardening Tips- Gardening for
Wildlife.

Just a reminder we open April 26 However I will be at Natural
Tunnel State Park on April 12 for WOW- I will be presenting a
program on vermicomposting- yes worms; and in Abingdon for the
Garden Faire April 18-20. More details on both of these are on
the events link at the website check it out at
www.beagleridgeherbfarm.com.

Be sure to check out the website after April 1st and check out
the changes we have made. We will be with a new web hosting
group after 8 years and I am hoping things go as well as they
have. We will also making some changes with the newsletters and
Emails that bounce will be removed from the customer database.
Hopefully the transition will be seamless, if you do not
recieve another newsletter by April 15th please email me at
beagleridge@gmail.com.

More soon,
Happy gardening,
Ellen
