Technology, Gadgets & Curiosities - From cutting edge, to over the edge, to the truly bizarre.

Creative have announced their latest Sound Blaster X-Fi (eXtreme Fidelity) based sound solution for notebooks in the form of the Sound Blaster X-Fi External USB sound card which brings full multi-channel surround sound capabilities, as well as Creative’s X-Fi 24-bit Crystalizer technology, to any notebook sporting a USB connection.
The first rule of Fight Club posting on TFTS is never to post about something unless we have decent imagery so, without further ado, we’ll now act to show scant regard for that rule in offering a heads up concerning Sharp’s new TL-M4600 and TL-M5200 professional HD LCD monitors regardless of the fact that Sharp have supplied no imagery of said monitors in any shape or form (an oversight on their part, we’re sure, as opposed to being any kind of an indication as to how they may actually look).
Invariably there will be those that will argue that, in ‘merely’ being a concept, this touchscreen universal remote conceived of by David Chacon has the luxury of being as desirable as it pleases in being wholly fictitious and constrained only by the designer’s scope of imagination, but to do so would negate the fact that it’s the concepts of today lead to the products of tomorrow and so are as valid a focus of our attention as any product that has successfully made the truncated path through from concept to commercially available product.
These novel, portable SATA I/II HDD enclosures from Sarotech, known simply as the Sarotech Wizplat W-31UA HDD Enclosures (a title that, we think you’ll agree, positively rolls off the tongue), apart from having been designed to resemble hardback books, also come with passive cooling courtesy of a series of fake page edge details and integral LED status light housed within their spines.
Eye-Fi, who’s innovative WiFi enabled SD memory cards we featured previously here on TFTS, has announced three new variants of its wireless SD cards in the form of the new Eye-Fi Explore, the Eye-Fi Share and the Eye-Fi Home.
Aigo have announced what they term as being a ‘breakthrough device’ in the form of their new Patriot MV5920 MP5 PMP which, apart from offering 720p HD quality video playback also sports WiFi, mobile TV and 160GB of integrated storage capacity and which, like Newman’s M8000 PMP, also just posted, has all the aesthetic charm of a house brick.
A certain saying tells us that we must never judge a book by its cover whilst another serves to remind us that beauty is more than just skin deep and, whilst we subscribe to the sentiments of both, the plain fact of the matter is that, when it comes to Newman’s new M8000 PMP, we simply cannot ignore its wholly uninspiring (some would say ugly) design though, underneath that brash exterior undoubtedly lies a decidedly capable and not unimpressive PMP.
Today (09/05/08) just happens to be the event of my wife’s birthday – (Happy Birthday, Sam) – and it also just so happens that she got to unbox her new Wii Fit this very morning, so it seems apt that, in an all too transparent bid to all to chisel in my best birthday wishes, we offer a heads up concerning Nyko’s up and coming Wii Balance Board Energy Pack.
Samsung’s VM-HMX20 1080p HD camcorder, which was showcased in prototype form at this years CES event in Las Vegas, and is capable of not only capturing 1080p HD video footage but doing so at up to an astounding 300fps, has had its South Korean launch announced.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all as far as external hard drive colour schemes are concerned along comes this camouflaged portable hard drive from Iomega, known as the Camo eGo, which, apart from sporting a somewhat distinctive colour scheme offers Drop Guard protection and 250MB of storage capacity.
