attached file: type: video/quicktime size: 42.15 MB here Fri, 27 Oct 2006 01:24:00 +0200 Last night the wind gusts sounded like a werewolf howling into the compound, but it was just Mother Nature reminding everyone that she was in charge. The wind settled down to a low roar for the morning and a massive 120-foot step down was the order of the day.
Josh Grant joined the group for some fun and hit some solid double-heel clicks off this ridge. Others took turns hitting it, but in the end only Potter, Renner, Buyten, Mason and Grant were the standouts. Renner had a huge save that had everyone holding their breath, but he managed to hold on and ride it out which resulted in a relieved cheer.
Everyone felt as though they were walking around a litter box since the wind picked up as the morning went on, and riders began to battle it. So it was back to camp for some lunch, though everyone had swallowed a meal’s worth of sand. By the time everyone had gathered, the gusts had picked up and due to safety concerns the day was cut short.
With two solid sessions at Glamis, the riders voted and the winner for the second location in Glamis was Mike Mason, with Buyten following and Renner taking third.
The overall results saw Ronnie Renner walking away with the Red Bull Ride to the Hills title between the two locations, but Mat Buyten showed up strong and Nate Adams fell into third, proving he is always a threat.
Thanks to the riders for making this trip, their schedules are busy and they still managed to get out there and kick up some dirt. We had a great time and look forward to the next time we see these guys in action…and riding.
attached file: type: video/quicktime size: 25.97 MB here Thu, 26 Oct 2006 03:07:00 +0200 Within just a few hours the crew had tore down camp at location one and was set up again at the second and final location. Though the air was humid with the previous night’s rain, the sun hid out…until the riders got on their bikes of course.
With blazing sun and humidity, the riders set out across the dunes to find a ride-able portion. It didn’t take long and the format for this location was simple; scout ‘em, ride ‘em and film ‘em. And that’s what happened.
Standouts were Renner, flying high after a win in Ocotillo Wells, as well as Clowers, Nate Adams, Mike Mason and Todd Potter. The riders dropped into a bowl and high a few smaller lips before careening through the air into a gigantic bowl to the cheer of gathered fans.
With the first part of this location down, and the sun following soon after, the riders headed back to see Renner receive his trophy, a shovel nonetheless with the event logo etched into it, for his win the previous day.
Tomorrow marks the final competition, the last day to accumulate points and/or win the special categories for this location- biggest gap, best whip and best line. There are no clear-cut winners so this is on and after a few fireworks in the distance and still no moon to light the night, most of the riders turned in early…I said “most” of them.
attached file: type: video/quicktime size: 58.95 MB here Wed, 25 Oct 2006 03:45:00 +0200 The clouds hung low in the morning with the menacing threat of rain, but that was nature talking smack. The rain had come the night before making the dusty, powdery lips and lines the riders cased the day before more workable. This made for happy faces.
During the first part of day Tommy Clowers took an original line which emphasized his technical abilities. At a distance of 50-feet, the jump featured a 20-foot tall lip and with a landing on a step-down that he transferred in the air. Add to this his usual style and he had a pretty solid ride.
Ronnie Renner, never the wallflower, gave a huge whip (anyone surprised?) on a left-handed hip. Always looking for hip that boy.
Around midday, as the sun poured the heat on, Todd Potter rocked one of the biggest jumps of the day, a 90-foot step-up and was pulled off a huge double-seat grab, which proved to be one of the first big tricks. He also landed a major kiss-of-death which was not judged as he had used up his total two jumps for that section.
Robbie Maddison was a bit banged up today, so he took a break from the riding to rest up and prepare for the dunes. He was missed and no doubt he’ll come back as a threat.
After dinner the riders judged themselves based on film that was edited to showcase each jump. The judging system is based on points, but there’s a bonus for the biggest whip, best line, biggest gap and best overall rider. The votes were tallied and…
Ronnie Renner is the winner of the first location of the 2006 Red Bull Ride to the Hills.
Below is how the points broke down, and with another stage to go, the points carry over and not only will there be a winner at the second location, but there will be an overall winner.
PLACE TOTAL POINTS
1 Ronnie Renner 840
2 Matt Buyten 770
3 Todd Potter 630
4 Nate Adams 590
5 Tommy Clowers 565
6 Dustin Miller 260
7 Drake McElroy 250
attached file: type: video/quicktime size: 62.15 MB here Tue, 24 Oct 2006 03:16:00 +0200 As the riders sat under the tent reminiscing the best lines of the day and bemoaning the ones that are too tore up to ride tomorrow, the sun took it’s own line behind the Chocolate Mountains. And while most riders were planning their strategy for tomorrow, one rider held hope that he would ride in the first day of competition on Tuesday.
Robbie Maddison walked through the group ripping open a beer can with his teeth, but a slight limp revealed the tumble he had taken earlier in the day off a lip that he cut too short on a 25-foot step up. Forget smoke, it’s sun that gets in your eyes out here.
Matt Buyten found and shaved this particular line and was the first to clear it. Even he complained of the sun that blinded his landing, but everyone agreed it was the find of the day. All the riders hope Maddison is back in form and able to ride, his creativity inspires some unique lines and his personality is typical Aussie-fun.
Another piper down was Tommy Clowers who hit his front wheel on the lip from a whip on a step-up. But Tom Cat lived up to his name- as always- and took the highest air of the day on a 30 –foot tall step-down lip. Cats always find ways to land on their feet.
At sundown the inflatable screen went up and Rancid rocked on in black and white as the desert chill rolled through the compound. The food arrived, so this piece is over. But tomorrow, it’s game on. The riders know the lines they’ll take and at this time tomorrow someone will have claimed the title for the first stop of the 2006 Red Bull Ride to the Hills.
attached file: type: video/quicktime size: 52.6 MB here Mon, 23 Oct 2006 01:40:00 +0200 The trucks were loaded, the coffee was on and the sun was warm. Sunday, October 22 was the perfect day to kick-off the 2006 Red Bull Ride to the Hills. The bikes were strapped down and the riders on the road to four days of the only freeriding competition on natural terrain.
After four hours of driving through the desert, the windfarms and more desert, the convoy reached the first of the competition’s two undisclosed locations in So-Cal. So the question is now, a good night of rest to prepare for the day or riding Monday or a few beers….
To be continued.
