With a nursing shortage expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows, hospital operators are rethinking the way they recruit and retain nurses. They're getting creative. Hospitals are holding breakfasts and other social based recruiting events in an effort to liven up the traditional stiff and formal practices they're typically used to doing.

A recent study on the appropriateness of minimum nurse staff levels concluded that 98% of nursing homes in New York have nursing levels that fall in the range where quality of care was shown to suffer. The nursing shortage has seen the ratios dip lower and lower as this current wave of reduced nursing staff grips the country's heath care industry and affects us all.

I recently came across a survey published in April that was conducted by the Michigan Center for Nursing, a state-funded agency begun in 2003 to analyze nursing trends. The 23 page report stated some alarming facts many of which point out that not only are current nurses too few, many older nurses are getting ready to retire. Making matters worse Michigan's nursing schools turned away 4,298 qualified applicants last year, even though the state will face a nursing shortage in a few years.

I'm reading more and more stories about nurses who are being fiercely recruited with $10,000 sign-on bonuses, laptop computers, free trips and in some cases free cars; all this for deciding to work for the recruiting employer. If a nurse wants a change of scenery she/he can relocate to another part of the country for free. Hospitals and other healthcare employers are frequently picking up the tab. When nurses want to return to school and earn an RN to BSN or RN to MSN, their education is subsidized. The current nursing shortage crisis has opened up tremendous financial opportunity for all nurses as RN's everywhere are calling the shots and reaping the rewards.
Like many other states across the country Mississippi is experiencing a nursing shortage. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Mississippi health care providers will experience a 22 percent vacancy rate in nursing positions by the year 2020, requiring more than 18,000 nurses to provide adequate patient care.

All across the country hospitals, educational institutions, local government, and various civic groups are recognizing that collectively working towards solutions to our nation's heath-care crisis is a fundamental step in the right direction.
Nursing shortages are nothing new. For years, U.S. hospitals have imported nurses from Canada, the Philippines and elsewhere to fill vacancies. But an aging baby boomer population and aging nursing work force are combining to create an unprecedented crisis that could lead to more medical mistakes and even patient deaths, experts say.

I've read some wonderful stories how various individuals began their path towards becoming a nurse and each one is not only inspiring but also unique. Take for instance a story that I recently read about Carla A. Pothering who after working for an insurance agency for over 10 years decided to pursue a nursing degree after her mother and aunt passed away in 1993.

With these bleak projections one would think the Bush administration would address this crisis by allotting appropriate funding to the development of the nursing workforce. Think again.

Many students currently enrolled in nursing degree programs are in their late 20's and early 30's.

Allowing immigrant nurses into the United States is just a temporarily solution to a much larger problem. And it is creating problems in other countries that are losing their "investment" when these nurses immigrate to America.
It's the same dilemma all over the country – there is a major shortage of nurses. And in light of the past hurricanes like Katrina, Wilma and Rita, the number of emergency preparedness health personnel would suffer quite a blow. There are simply not enough health care professionals to go around if a major disaster like a hurricane or terrorist threat like the World Trade Center happens again.
The nursing shortage in the United States is really pushing entities to try drastic measures to fill in the gaps. In Rhode Island, health service organizations are going so far as to hire from overseas, shelling out the costs of a recruitment firm plus overseas relocation expenses, and even paying the costs for the foreign recruit to obtain a practicing license in the States. Does this sound like throwing money away?

In response to a recent article about sending nursing students to the Ukraine to complete their training, I must say that that move is overkill to the extreme. Yes, there are shortages of nurses and yes, there is the problem of fewer nursing educators and training facilities. No one is necessarily disputing that fact. I am disagreeing with the drastic measures of sending American nursing students way from their homes for two years for training that they can do here stateside.

The number of people available to fill the constant demand for nurses is falling farther and farther behind the demand. Nurse's aides are becoming registered nurses as quickly as they can. In turn, it is incumbent upon registered nurses to take the next step and earn their bachelor's of science in nursing degree or BSN as quickly as possible.
At University of Phoenix, you can not only earn your BSN but when you complete that, you can go on to earn a masters degree in science and specialize in health care education, health care management, integrative health care, or health care administration. Together, so far, the total number of nurses in the SEIU is approximately 84,000.
