Sometimes finding inspiration for a design is one of the most difficult things to do. Where do you begin? What will be the color scheme, and the basis of the design? We can find inspiration from many of the things we see around us everyday. It doesn't have to be a complicated process.

One of the best places to look for design inspiration is from nature and photographs. What are some of your favorite vacation sites? What colors are there that remind you of that place. A beach color scheme would include sandy browns, blues, greens and whites. A forest inspired scheme would include dark, bark browns, mossy greens, and rich earthy colors.

Another great place to look for inspiration is from artwork, area rugs and fabrics. Find one that you really like, and examine the colors in it. Then pick paint swatches based on these colors. You can even take the fabric swatch or a photo to the paint store to match colors. This should give you a great start on your project and learning how to pick the best colors for your design. Most of all, just remember to have fun and try new and creative things!

Learning how to layout a room can be one of the most challenging aspects of interior design. Traditional methods of drafting floor plans include hand drafting by pencil or pen, or using complicated programs such as Autocad or Microstation. But for the homeowner or decorating enthusiast, these methods can be too complicated and confusing.

Often people think of decorating themes as cheesy or dated, but you can really create a themed bathroom or kitchen without going over the top. Here are some great ways to create a themed room. The first thing you will need to do is determine what theme the room will have. It should be something that you are familiar with or are very interested in. You can also choose things like flowers (or perhaps a particular type of flower like roses, daisies, hibiscus or even violets). Perhaps a child's bathroom could have a theme relating to something that the child enjoys. Horses, trucks, sports, or even a particular sports team are all great kids bathroom themes.

5. A theme can be based around a particular color pallette or feeling that you want to evoke. Perhaps the sunset inspires you, or the colors of the beach. Maybe you enjoy the colors found in the rainforest or in a summer flower garden. Inspiration can even come from a piece of furniture or a particular painting you love.

An interior designer typically has a formal education, and has completed a Bachelor's Degree. Some professional designers have completed a shorter educational program, but have many years of experience in the field and have passed the NCIDQ exam and are members of a professional organziation such as ASID or IIDA. As winter comes around, and heating bills rise, there are some simple things homeowners can do to fight the cold, and keep energy costs lower. Here are some great ways to winterize your home interior:

1. Check for air leaks- Go through your home, looking for places air can escape. This could be windows, gaps or cracks in basement walls, underneath doors, or drafts from an attic or basement. Seal any cracks or gaps with an expanding foam product such as "great stuff".

2. Install weatherstripping around windows and doors to keep drafts out. Check old weatherstripping and caulk to be sure that it's not old and cracking.

1. Re-use existing items: This is one of the best ways to save money! In fact, you won’t spend any money at all. Take an inventory of items in your home and try to look at them in a different light. Sometimes we get so used to seeing things in the same place, that we don’t even consider using them in a different way. Just try moving things around, and you may come up with something you love!

2. Paint, Paint, Paint! – One of the best ways to completely change the look of a room, and for only a few dollars per room! Try new colors that you never though of. We all know that getting ready for the holidays can be a very hectic time. There is so much to think about. Artwork is an important finishing touch for any interior. You can really express your personal style through the artwork you select. Be sure that the style of your artwork matches the style of the design of your room. Some exploration into design styles can help to determine this. Contemporary, Traditional, Country, Modernist, and Exotic are just a few of the many styles that can be exhibited through artwork. A contemporary piece of art would have a more simple, streamlined frame, or maybe even no frame. A country style painting could be a scene of a barn or cottage, and would have a weathered, casual-looking frame. If you enjoy traditional styles, you may want a photorealistic portrait, still-life, or an impressionistic painting, using a traditional, wood or golden frame.

Be sure that the scale and proportion of the artwork is right for your room. A common mistake is to use artwork that is too small for the wall, and gets lost. The arwork should be very noticeable to people who enter the room. Be sure that the placement of the artwork works vertically with the wall. A general rule of thumb is to center the artwork between the top of the furniture and the ceiling. It should be big enough to make an impact.

Artwork does not have to be all framed prints and paintings. There are also many other types of artwork, including tapestries, ironwork, clocks, murals, family photographs, wall sculpture, or just about anything you would like to display! Be creative when selecting decorative accents.

Also, the colors of the artwork should work with the colors of the interior (but not necessarily match them). Artwork is intended to be an accent, and it can have vibrant colors and textures. To save money on artwork, try looking for great frames at auctions, thrift stores, and outlet stores. You can then purchase posters or prints online or from a local art or craft store, and combine them with the frame. If you are really creative, you can create your own artwork. Your local art store carries pre-assembled canvases, and you can make your own painting. Contemporary designs may be easier to create because they usually have simple shapes and colors. You can also take a small section of a picture or fabric you like, and re-create it on canvas.
