The Able-Technology Podcast

This episode/mix was arranged exclusively for a recent show I did in Eugene, Oregon USA. Big up's to the Gaia-Tribe who continue to preserve why we do this thing called electronic music. This is just the beginning of many more to come... Over the past 10 years I have seen dance music and its technology evolve from analog performances into the digital age. With Serato DJ's preserving the vinyl format, it goes without question that we will continue to utilize the turntable and digital modules to present our craft for another 10 years and beyond. The age of the digital performer is upon us though, and with this I have been experimenting with different mediums, especially those which involve capturing a set within the Ableton Live platform. This interface literally turns the performer into a producer, and the producer into a performer overnight. With basic production knowledge, a fledgling performer can hone his arrangement skills and quickly create digital ready tracks or mixes to distribute over the net. Likewise, producers who have traditionally stayed within the realms of the studio are now finding themselves venturing out to perform on their laptops with midi interfaces and other compatible gear to produce memorable shows. The simple ease of use within this software allows for creativity to literally flow uninterrupted... The Able-Technolgy podcast and its subsequent episodes/mixes are only one example of utilizing this interface's powerful features. For this mix I performed simple editing and automation to existing tracks contained within my music library, and added sporadic production through out the mix to enhance the flow. The more I work with Live... the more technical each consecutive episode/mix will be, but for the time being please sit back and enjoy the premiere episode of the Able-Technology series podcasts ( A Funky House Mix ) Track Listing: Distant Funk - Slumbertime - Original Mix Jimpster - Don't Push it - Swag's Don't pull it dub Sound Republic- Insomnia Control- Original Mix Sound Republic- Fresh Produce Control- Original Mix Wagon Cooking - Moonstreams- Swag Dub Odor Ricardo D Acosta - Greatest Invention - Vocal Mix Dj Tye - Exotic Suburb - Original Mix Sound Republic - Chop it up - Original Mix Sound Republic - Huffy fun box - Original Mix Sound Republic - Imaginary Lover - Original Mix Soud Suspects- California Joe - Funky Formula Mix Patrick L - Foot Days are gone - Original Mix Jay West - Feeling Sexy - Original Mix Swag - Music Box - Original Mix Swazak - Big Al - Swag Dub Instant Noodle - Decible Magic - Original Mix Wawa- Flamenco - Tribal Beats Mix Matt Shrewd _ Da Brothas into Hip Hop Flavor- Original Mix Ed Gusto - Roots _ Wawa remix Lady D and Sista Stroke - Unreleased Shit My brotha's and sista's If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. As I forge ahead learning Live's capabilities I continue to encounter ways of digitally mixing and digitally editing tracks to suit the flow of the mix. In this recent set, I've done a number of things I haven't done in earlier "Live" mixes, that is edit down tracks by removing the unwanted portions of a song for the sake of set flow. I then use loops cut from within the edited tracks to continue the energy flow down the path I envisioned. This mix contains a lot of this, and in one case I even take three remixes of the same song to combine them together and make one solid track... Lots of fun to say the least. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this latest creation! This is a progressive groove mix performed by Jonathan Youmans of Houston, TX. It was a mix tape that he gave me in 1999. It's got some really smooth mixes and choice track selection. I have a feeling this one will get some serious downloads this week as it contains a lot of the late 90's proggy classics that were popular around that time. This is the first show that I have managed to install chapters in. It's coded in ACC/MP4 format or M4a for iTunes. These type of files allow podcast producers the ability to construct chapters or track marks that enable listeners the opportunity to view album art and links about the artist for each track in the mix. This is a great feature as it allows you to skip through the mix which is really cool. If you can't play (enhanced) podcasts... no worries there's an mp3 format you can download as well. This mix is now 10 years old, it was first recorded on a mix-tape and was a big hit back then. Recently a friend of mine suggested that I release this on the show, so I did just that. I hope you enjoy the mix... It's old, but I think you'll agree that it still resonates today... For the ACC/MP4 and M4a listeners you can access the track information in the Chapter Section of your iTunes Player. For those downloading the MP3: 1. Foremost Poets- Moon Raker (Accapella) 2. Earth Shakers- Rock On 3. Huda Hudia- Pump it up (Tony faline Maximum Funk Remix) 4. Mother's Pride- Nightflight (Original Mix) 5. DJ Icey- Soundscape Rhythm 6. Explorium- Technologies Of Transcendance 7. Spacemen- Communion 8. Friction & Spice- Groove Me Remix 9. PMT- Marching Powder 10. Hooverphonic- 2Wicky (DJ Pulse Remix) 11. I wrote a whole commentary on this episode. I'm pissed now because it didn't even upload and I have to write it again... I guess a welcome back to me is in order. I've been away for quite a number of months now, and have had my hand in fatherhood with the birth of my daughter, and so the podcast project was placed on the back burner for a while. I never forgot about it though and was thinking of how to bring forth the next show. A while back I had thought of re-mastering some old mix tapes of mine from the mid 1990's, and I finally have come around to doing it. These series appropriately called "Time Machine" will post every once and a while and it's premise is to highlight influences and genres core to my first ever sonic experiences of House music. This is a mix that was done Live in 1996 by D-Bug aka Teejay of Jacksonville, FL USA. It is side A of the mix tape called "Dazie Head Mazie." It was transferred from tape media into the digital realm via Pro-Tools. After so many years of sitting in my tape box I had to clean it up to preserve it. I didn't totally crystallize it into a pristine piece though as I wanted the listeners to get a good idea of the tape experience... Some of you undoubtedly haven't ever heard of anything recorded in this medium, so this will prove educational to your ears... This mix is a little on the proggy side of the spectrum, and incorporates a lot of prevalent 303 acid riffs, but it's eloquently mixed and the track selections are "choice." I don't have a play list, but I am certain that some of you will recognize some of the tracks played... Enjoy, If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. This month's FREE DOWNLOAD on the Able-Technolgy podcast is yet another remix competition entry, "Give Me Love" by Fresh 27

Although I didn't win, I did have a great time manipulating the beats for this track. Ableton Live 6 has really allowed me to experiment with all sorts of methods to produce. I discover something new each and every time I sit down to arrange. It's awesome! As each track I produce is finished, I realize that they are progressing towards a much more polished feel, flow, and vibe. I hope you agree when you listen or play this track in your set. It certainly fits in the Acid/Electro realm of dance music. If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. Let me know, you can find me on Myspace at: www.myspace.com/johnosorio 2. This is the second of two FREE DOWNLOAD's that I have posted on the Able-Technolgy show. The first one was the LASERBEAM track, and now this month's MUCKYSTAR. This remix was produced and arranged by Jessica Partin and myself... The track was for an online remix contest she and I entered in May... I have to be honest, I really wasn't in the mood to submit a track for review in a contest. It's tough competiting with other artist's creativity. I mean, we all have some sort of spark or life given to us by the energy upstairs, and pitting others against themselves really kinda bums me out because we are all one in the same. Mostly I did it because Jessica pushed me along the process, and believe it or not the track ended up sounding pretty dubby and polished. This is after only two sittings in the studio with Jessica. The track represents a vibe that I have been trying to capture over the years.... which more than likely sounds like getting down into a deep liquid funkiness alongside digital bleeps and pops. It was fun arranging this track and we both worked with the numerous effects Live has to offer. I will for sure work alongside with Jessica in the future as her creativity always has a way of sparking mine into uncharted territories. Enough talk.... take a moment to listen and enjoy! It's been quite a while since I've posted a set and I wanted to let everyone know that it wasn't because I was away from the studio. Actually, I have been working, but this time instead of making or mixing a set together, I decided to work on several productions. This is the first of two FREE DOWNLOAD's that I will post on the Able-Technolgy Podcast for the month's of May and June. I do want to set things straight with this podcast.... You can use it in your DJ sets, download it onto your i-pod, or just bang it in your car. Do whatever you want with it.. even remix it if you want. This track was produced in Live 6. I had a blast arranging and producing the piece. It has over 27 individual tracks moving through it, from the 5 Atmosphere Modules, to the dueling Trilogy bass modules, and last but not least the various audio samples (DJ Scratches, Female vocals, and a small piece of Lexicon Avenue's "Why are you Here") The percussion was plotted via an onboard percussion kit I made from various drum machine kits that my friends have given me over the years. I took the "one hits" from these kits and placed them into the Impulse Module in LIVE then plotted the midi notes to create kicks, snares, percussion, drum fills etc. It is written in D-minor. I really liked working in that key because it allowed me to arrange melodic tribal notes that cohesively melted into the arrangement. I don't really know how to classify this track into a House genre... I'll leave that up to you. I encourage you to please drop me a line on myspace if you happen to use this track in a set or arrangement. Working together with my audience allows me to polish my production skills, but more importantly it gives me an opportunity get to know the individuals who are listening and downloading my podcasts. Well without further delay... click play and enjoy this latest installment of the Able-Technology Podcast for May 2007. Cheers! John If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. Hmmmmm I just got word from my friend SkipJack Stu that he's finished his mix... Diggin as that will be the next episode for Able-Technology. He and I are really working the technology and the internet by exchanging our music online... editing and mixing our individual sets into one... that next episode is going to be interesting to produce and I can't wait to get it out on the podcast. In the meantime, I've uploaded another straight turntable mix Iberian-Progression as the name states progression is the element here. Lots of tribal influences, club influences and steady melding on the Technics. Below are the track listings for this mix. Here we are two weeks into the release of (Digital Domain) and I haven't yet posted another "Live" mix . This episode however is an old raw mix that I have dusted off from my compilation collection. It was put together in the year 2000 and represents a deeper groove of evolution. It was a milestone mix because it was the first set that I burned onto CD for distribution. It was also the first time I collaborated with Josiah Smith, my sound engineer and good friend. We had fun working in Pro-Tools to beef up the sound to give it that signature HOUSE roundness. Before this release, all my mixes were copied onto mixtapes the old fashioned way. Later in the year I'll post some of those old tape mixes of which I still have the DAT masters of (remember the DAT recorder?) It seems like ages when I used a DAT recorder to record my masters to. I don't have a track listing for the mix, but I know it contains some old G-Pal tracks, a Roy Davis Jr. track and some CASA del Soul Tracks you might like. This is one of those timeless sets that one never really gets tired of listening to. It is also the first mix that I managed to use on board effects in. I miss mixing on my Pioneer DJM-500... I still have it, but it is more of a museum piece at the moment. Anyway enough rambling... cheers! If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. Bora Bora is yet another straight turntable mix that I have in my collection. It was Inspired by the now famous Bora Bora beach parties on the beautiful island of Ibiza. This episode contains some great Iberican tracks, along with some outstanding funky house reminiscent of Ibiza's 2004 season. I was fortunate enough to visit Ibiza in September of 2004, and I had a blast not only at Bora Bora beach, but also at KM5, Space (on Sunday where I got to hear Steve Lawler drop a wicked wicked set), DC-10 for Circo Loco, and finally I experienced El Divino... need I say more... I was completely exhausted when I returned home, but man was it worth it! In this set, you'll hear top favorites of 2004... All in all this mix was fun to produced and mix down..... as always.... Getting creative is what Ableton is about... In this mix, I took President Bush speech blunders and added it into the intro (just to prove my point he has no business leading the United States) It goes alongside the theme of the podcast.... as it is more or less a protest to the Bush administration and their actions over the years. It's about the politics of war, and how we can all stop it by just following our hearts and making our voices heard over all the noise. I managed to really melt tracks together using various production methods I've learned while getting into the Ableton platform... There are some great effects that I have placed on top of samples and beats created via midi... and the energy flows smoothly through out the mix... As always, please take a moment to listen, download, and pass along... Enjoy! This mix was done the old fashioned way... It's a straight turntable mix...No Ableton, No Serato, No Mp3's, No Wav files, nada... it's clean, it's simple and to the point. I wanted to post this piece to demonstrate some performance skills and pay homage to the old turntable media. I miss the roundness of vinyl, I miss the warmth of its sound, I miss the fidelity it produces, but honestly, I don't miss the price tag of the vinyl format. I remember dropping hundreds of dollars monthly just to put together a decent set... Thankfully those days have gone by the wayside, and putting together smart sets don't cost as much anymore. To further add, production vehicles such as Ableton, have allowed us to put our OWN music in our mixes... NOW that I like even more! Be sure to check the show out the 2nd week of February 2007 as there will be a new Ableton produced down-tempo mix uploaded. In the meantime enjoy this classic summer mix circa 2004 Cheers! Track Listing: Telemark & Kudra Owens: I Feel Alright (Dub Version) Marmelade: Lullabies Featuring Karine (Alex Kid Club Mix) Exun 2030: Planet Earth (Original Mix) Little Mike: You Gotta See This (Original Mix) Joeski Featuring Omar Alexander: Be There For Me (Original Mix) J&S productions: Te Quiero (Original Mix) Cassius: The Sound of Violence (Two Minute Warning Club Mix By Narcotic Thrust) Victor Magan & Lagarho: Feel Good (Juan Magan & Cesar Del Rio Remix) Kathy Dhope: Getting Crazy (Tribe Solution Remix) Rob Pearson: Bt's Hair (Original Mix) Mark Farina: We Gotta Get (Original Mix) Herbie Hancock: Rok-It (Re-Launch Remix) Bobby Blanco & Mikki Moto: 3 am (Eddie Amador Mix) Infectious Audio: Jacob's Groove (Original Mix) Tony Thomas: The Juggler (Original Mix) Eddie Spettro, Diesel & Desmet: That's The Joint (Spettro's Green Thumb Remix) ty tek: X-Rated (Original Mix) Marques Wyatt: For Those Who Like To Get Down (Deep Sunday Retro Vibe Mix) If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1. Greetings Well it took almost 5 weeks to produce this mix, but I think you'll agree after listening, that this one may have been well worth the wait. As I continue to move progressively forward with the Ableton Live interface, I continue to discover new ways to be creative within the mix. This time around I leaned more towards using tracks from the Electronic Breakbeat spectrum of dance music. There are 18 tracks intermingled for this 60 minute mix and production which include favorites like Violet's "Burn the Elastic", of which I added effects plus some fresh vocal samples. I also managed to mash up the Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" with some new school beats and enhanced Chicken Lip's "He not in". If you listen closely you might also hear a snippit of Planet Rock as well. This is by far one of the most entertaining productions I've done to date, and it was a welcome return to the Breakbeat genre, of which I haven't mixed an entire set for close to 10 years. It brought back some great memories of my early days of clubbing, and at the same time, allowed me to re-work some classic songs layering some newer productions over them. This isn't a classic breakbeat mix however, as there are also some new hit wonders in the set as well... keep an ear out for them and enjoy! Track Listing: Chronic Break (Agent K & Duece ) [J-Break Mix] Loose Caboose (Electroliners) Rain (DJ Icey Featuring Jen Lasher) Burn the Elastic (Violet) [Orsonic Funk mix] Geomantik (Praha Northern Exposure mix) Sweet Harmony (Dj Icey Mix) Bring Back the Funk (Krafty Kuts) 2 Da Break (Finger Lickin’ All stars) Fatal Attraction (Original Mix) Yeah Yeah (Bodyrox) [Electro Mix] Coming Up for Air (Koma and Bones Featuring Sarah Whittaker) I want to Fall (Single Cell Orchestra) Devil Theory (Introspective) [Orsonic Acid Funk Mix] Different Days (DJ Icey) Intergalactic- Beastie Boys (Orsonic Electro Mash) “(S)he not in” Chicken Lips (Feel it in your Soul mix) Untitled Butterfly Dawn (130 BPM Mix) No Sun in the Sky Kraak Smaak (Infekto Remix) If you enjoyed the mix of this podcast: 1.
