The Apache James team (http://james.apache.org) are pleased to announce that once more we are proposing ideas for Google Summer of Code student projects. This years ideas are:
1) To develop a VERP Mailet to allow James to write VERP modified return addresses on outbound messages, and an inbound mailet/matcher to identify VERP bounces and invoke configurable "do something" code.
2) James' provided mailing list manager is fine for small closed groups, but lacks the functionality of a more robust MLM, the project is to add some all or more of the following features: subscriber and message moderation, double opt-in and bounce handling.
We all look forward to welcoming Student proposals for these or any other ideas, and would welcome discussion of the ideas on the James Server Developers mailing list.

Apache XML Graphics Commons is a library that consists of several reusable components used by Apache Batik and Apache FOP. Many of these components can easily be used separately outside the domains of SVG and XSL-FO.
The most important addition in this release is an image loading framework which supports all sorts of different image formats (bitmap and vector) and is highly extensible.
Besides that, there were a larger number of smaller additions and bugfixes.
Support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Java 1.4 or later is required now.

This release also introduces new default cookie policy that selects a cookie specification depending on the format of cookies sent by the target host. It is no longer necessary to know beforehand what kind of HTTP cookie support the target host provides. HttpClient is now able to pick up either a lenient or a strict cookie policy depending on the compliance level of the target host.
Another notable improvement is a completely reworked support for multipart entities based on Apache mime4j library.

The Apache Cayenne team is pleased to present the third milestone of Cayenne 3. This is a development branch of Cayenne and still undergoing significant changes. A number of developers are using it in production systems, however if you want the most stable and tested version of Cayenne you should use version 1.x or 2.x which have a proven track record and are widely used in deployment.
This milestone release adds some exciting new features, including enhancements to the Cayenne modeler for lifecycle listeners and callbacks and the ability to merge changes to the model back to the database, extensive new work toward full JPA compliance, updates to cgen and the templates, and much more.
This release requires Java 5 as a minimum. The decision to change the required JDK was made after a poll of users revealed no substantial need for Java 1.4 and plenty of benefits in moving forward. Generics are only partially completed in the public API at this time and we continue to try and balance the opportunities and headaches of a clean generics interface.

They are nonetheless sufficient to develop basic client side and server side HTTP services with a minimal footprint and no external dependencies. HttpCore NIO extensions can be used to build asynchronous HTTP services based on non-blocking I/O model capable of handling a great number of simultaneous connections with just a few I/O threads.
