Tue, 22 Jul 2008 06:59:26 +0200 NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Yankees routed the Minnesota Twins 12-4 on Monday to record their fourth consecutive victory and keep pace in the race for the American League East. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs to help the Yankees move a season-high nine games over .500 and stay four games behind AL East leaders Tampa Bay. The victory was also their eighth in a row at Yankee Stadium. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano also homered for the Yankees, who placed catcher Jorge Posada on the 15-day disabled list with an injured throwing shoulder before the game. Posada will be examined again on Tuesday, but faces possible season-ending surgery. Jose Molina was behind the plate for the Yankees and had a season-high three hits. "Jorge is going to come back sometime and I am just going to help out until he gets back," Molina said. "If we get the pitching we've had lately we are going to win a lot of games." Sidney Ponson (6-1) gave up...

Tue, 22 Jul 2008 00:56:01 +0200 NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Giants have traded tight end Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints for the team's second-round and fifth-round draft picks next year, the NFL Network reported on Monday. Shockey, named four times to the Pro Bowl during his six years with the Giants, broke his left leg late last season and missed New York's postseason run that ended with an upset win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The fiery Shockey, a first-round draft pick, 14th overall, out of the University of Miami in 2002, caught 57 passes for 619 yards last season and scored three touchdowns. Shockey, 27, was injured in the Week 15 defeat last season by the Washington Redskins. The trade is contingent upon Shockey passing a physical exam. Rookie Kevin Boss from Western Oregon filled in ably for Shockey in New York's unexpected march to the championship. Boss caught nine passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns during his late-season stint...

Mon, 21 Jul 2008 13:36:19 +0200 SOUTHPORT (Reuters) - British Open champion Padraig Harrington said on Monday that fear was the key to his successful title defense at Royal Birkdale. The Irishman played a commanding final round on Sunday to secure a four-shot victory over Britain's Ian Poulter and his second major triumph. "Fear has always been a motivator in my golf," Harrington told a news conference. "I think winning a major last year, the biggest fear was not to go down the road of guys who have won majors and struggled to keep the intensity after that." Harrington, whose defense had been in doubt at the start of the week because of an injury to his right wrist, said he had worked with his sports psychologist Bob Rotella to make it such motivating factor. "I've spent some time talking to Bob Rotella about it (fear) because it can be quite a negative emotion to use to push you on. "Fear is a big part of me. I'd like to say that I have all the trust and faith (in my game) and be...

Sat, 19 Jul 2008 23:12:36 +0200 ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece and Croatia booked their places at the Beijing Olympic Games after winning Saturday's semi-finals in the men's basketball qualifying tournament. Croatia secured their spot with a tight 76-70 win over favorites Germany while the hosts had a smoother passage, beating Puerto Rico 88-63. The two losers will meet in a playoff on Sunday to see who takes the 12th and final place in Beijing. Germany's defeat by Croatia came in spite of a superb individual performance from Dallas Mavericks' power forward Dirk Nowitzki, who notched up 30 points and claimed 13 defensive rebounds. Led by Marko Tomas who scored 21 points, the 20th-ranked Croatians showed how much their game has improved over the last week. "We weren't a good team before this tournament but we stepped up and proved that we could play good basketball," said guard Marko Popovic. The Germans trailed for most of the game, nudging ahead only briefly two minutes before the end...
