PandaLabs has detected a large-scale phishing attack targeting clients of Barclays Bank’s online services and involving at least 61 variants of a spoof email. The scale of this attack has seen the number of fraudulent emails detected by PandaLabs increase by 30 percent in just a few hours. In fact, of all phishing messages currently analyzed, some 64 percent target Barclays’ clients. According to PandaLabs, Panda Software’s TruPreventTM Tecnologies have detected and blocked the Alanchum.NX Trojan and all of its variants with no need to have identified them previously. As a result, users of these technologies have been protected against these threats since they emerged. The different variants of Alanchum are spreading in several waves of spam with a large variety of subjects, including: “230 dead as storm batters Europe”, “Saddam Hussein alive!”, “Chinese missile shot down Russian satellite“ or “Fidel Castro Dead”.
According to PandaLabs, 53.6 percent of the new malware samples in 2006 were Trojans. Spyware only accounted for 1.5 percent of the new specimens. However, spyware infected the most computers, responsible for 38.9 percent of all computer infections detected by Panda ActiveScan, Panda Software’s free, online scanner.
According to PandaLabs, in 2006, more new variants of bots were detected than any other type of malware barring Trojans. The vast majority of these variants belonged to just eight families. In fact, over 74 percent of new bot detections were from just two families: Gaobot (37.52%) and Sdbot (36.63%).
Panda Software’s UTM appliance, Panda GateDefender Integra 300, has been awarded 5 stars by the Spanish magazine BYTE, thanks to its excellent performance. In fact, 76 percent of the companies audited during the Malware Radar test phase were infected by malware, even though they had security solutions installed.

Panda Software has launched the beta version of TotalScan, an online malware scanner able to detect all types of threats on users' PCs. This malicious code is designed to allow its creators to launch distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks from each computer infected. This junk mail tries to attract users’ attention with references to the latest episode of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga.The email includes an image that looks like promotional material for the film and claims to contain a trailer. The message subject simply says: “Pirates of the Caribbean:At world’s end”.
This week's PandaLabs' report focuses on Conycspa.AJ, a dangerous Trojan that downloads nine malicious codes onto computers. It also focuses on Briz.X, a Trojan that has infected more than 14,000 users, and on the MSNPhoto.A and Ridnu.D worms.
The amount of new malware created every year has increased 25,818 percent over the last seven years, according to a report by PandaLabs. "This data underlines the fact that more malware is being circulated now than at any other time, and this trend is continuing," explains Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs.
A new wave of Trojans is using phishing-type techniques to steal users’ bank details. BanKey.A and BankFake.A are the latest such examples. When run, both Trojans show users a page that looks like an online bank website for them to enter their bank passwords and account numbers. However, if users do so, they will be revealing this data to malware creators.
Jorge Dinares will join Panda Software as the new CEO on June 1, and will have executive responsibility for this group with a presence in more than 50 countries.

According to data compiled by TrustLayer Mail, the managed security service from Panda Software, 90 percent of email that reached companies in May was spam. This data has been extracted from a study of those companies who have contracted this service.
