If a wire rope leads over a sheave and on to a drum on an air winch, the rope will not remain in alignment with the sheave groove. Instead, it will deviate to either side depending upon the width of the drum and its distance from the fixed sheave, often called the lead sheave. The angle between the center line through the lead sheave and the centerline of the rope leading to the drum is called the fleet angle. Experience has shown that the best wire rope service is obtained when the maximum fleet angle is not more than 1 1⁄2° for smooth drums, and 2° for grooved drums. Fleet angles of 1 1⁄2° and 2° are the equivalents of approximately 38 feet and 29 feet, respectively, of lead for each foot of drum width either side of the center line of the lead sheave.
Don't worry about shipping charges on purchasing a new Robinair 34788 refrigerant recovery machine. Red Hill Supply offers free shipping anywhere in the United States. This also applies to most of the Robinair A/C machine product line. The Robinair 34788 meets the new J2788 spec for 2007 and newer vehicles. If you are working on air conditioners for newer vehicles the 34788 is a must. This machine will work on older vehicles as well. So it can easily replace your older AC machine.
We have a new car dealership and we need to purchase a new refrigerant recovery machine to use on our new cars. Which model is the best choice for our business?

The SAE J2788 regulations regarding the handling of AC refrigerants came into force for the first time in late 2006, as a guideline recommendation, and have now become mandatory. The new ac machines are required to meet the 95% refrigerant recovery spec. This is 20% more than the SAE J2210 standard that the older ac machines were required to meet. Currently, the only Robinair 34788 is the only refrigerant recovery machine on the market that is meeting this new stricter requirement. So for all cars 2008 and newer, you will have to the ROB34788 in order to recover refrigerant.
I am setting up a field service truck to handle service calls and warranty jobs out in the field. I am going to purchase a used pick up truck and outfit it with tool boxes. I am going to have run air tools from the truck. Mainly I will be using 1/2" impact wrenchs, air ratchets and air hammers. What kind of truck mounted air compressor would you recommend I install? I plan on using it for a while and quality is very important.

For a truck mounted air compressor, you need one powered by a gas engine and a horizontal tank. An Ingersoll Rand Type 30 is an excellent choice and is used by professional mechanics around the world. It has a 3o gallon tank and puts out 175 psi of max pressure. That should be enough to run you air tools in demanding applications. The unit also has a powdered coat weather resistant paint so it will look good for years.
If you run a busy auto shop or are involved in a demanding industrial application that requires you to run air tools around the clock choosing the right air compressor is critical. Lets face it, an el cheapo model from Sears or Home Depot won't cut it in the industrial environment. If you are using your air compressor for home or occasional use, those models are fine and will serve you well. For the professional, I would highly recommend an Ingersoll Rand Type 30 air compressor. The Type 30 is a proven model and workhorse. It is 100% duty rated. This means you can run it 24/7. That literally means you never have to shut it off. The reason is the quality of components combined with a proven time tested design. If you are running your air compressor all day, every day, trying to save money on a cheaper will end up costing you more is downtime. You can get a Type 30 in either a gas engine or an electrical powered version.
I want to purchase a gas powered air compressor to use in my workshop and I am not sure where the best place to install it would be. Do you have any suggestions and advice on this subject? I have purchased an Ingersoll Rand 2475F13GH air compressor with a Honda engine. It has a horizontal tank and I want to permanently mount it to a slab.

With gas air compressors, one of the biggest dangers is carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust. So your safest bet is to install it outside of your shop. I would pour a concrete slab to mount it on and build a cover over it to protect it from the weather. Then pipe in the air to your shop. Do not mount it in a confined space or in your work area. Also, make sure there is at least 3 feet between the air compressor's engine and the wall or any other equipment. Proper ventilation is important to keep the unit running cool.
Regulating your pressure in your air compressor is made easy using a relatively simple device called an air compressor regulator. They provide controlled, consistent air pressure as required for specific pneumatic equipment when connected to the complete air compressor system. You can adjust the desired PSI simply by turning the T handle and dial in the desired pressure. This will allow you to adjust from 0 to 125 PSI very precisely. Some regulators are also double as filter/water separators as well.
Many customers cannot decide between a single stage or a two stage air compressor for their auto shop. The big difference between the two is the PSI they produce. A single stage air compressor compresses air to a final pressure in one stroke. There is only one piston mounted on the unit and generally has an oversized belt wheel. They generally produce pressures between 70 PSI and 90 PSI with a maximum pressure of 135 PSI. This is fine to power most air tools you will work with. A two stage model compresses air to an intermediate pressure in the first stage, removes the heat of compression through an intercooler and then compresses air to a final pressure in the second stage. Two stage air compressors are more effecient and are generally used for pressures above 100 PSI. They have a maximum pressure of 175 PSI.
If you are not sure what type of air compressor you need for your particular application, we have just added a handy selection chart to help you narrow down your choices. Air compressors are used anywhere from the home garage to a large industrial businesses. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to decide how much power you really need. All you need to use this chart is
  1. Know what type of work your air compressor will used for
  2. Your power requirements
  3. How much PSI and CFM you need
With this information, you can see your different options and find the unit that fits your budget and needs.
Industrial safety supplies are critical to the safe operation of your industrial business and safety regulations are getting more and more strict every year. The modern workplace is full of dangers to your workers. In an auto shop, for example a brake lathe can throw out metal shavings and damage your eyes. An emergency eye wash station is invaluable in a situation like this. The mechanic can run to the eyewash shower and flush his eyes out. Also, wearing the proper safety equipment can prevent most minor injuries such as a metal shaving getting in your eyes. However, chemical splashes also happen frequently and safety glasses will not do much good. A splash of gasoline in the eyes and an eyewash station can save the day.
Air compressor technology is much older than most people think. Compressed air has been used as a power source for centuries. One application for compressed air that was employed in the distant past was as a bellows. A bellows is a simple air compressor. The operator will squeeze the two handles together compressing the leather sack in between two paddles. This action would compress the air and shoot it out a nozzle on the end. This early air compressor was perfect for direction compressed air into a furnace in order to greatly increase the heat. This allowed for much hotter fires and better forging techniques. So the next time you see a modern air compressor in your local auto repair shop, remember that technology has been with us for a long time.
Moisture in you air compressor system is a serious problem that is overlooked by the vast majority of shops using compressed air to power their tools and equipment. Water and water vapor in your system reduces the life of your air tools and equipment over time. Also, present are other contaminants like rust, lubricant, dirt etc. These also are harmful to your air compressor and need to be removed. You should consider adding an aftercooler and a dryer to remove these harmful contaminants. An Aftercooler can bring your discharge air temperature close to within 20˚ to 50˚ of the ambient air temperature. This causes most of the moisture to condense into liquid form. Once moisture is in a liquid state, it can then be removed from the system and expelled.
If you are wondering what type and size air tools you can run with air compressor. We have no provided a handy chart. You can use this chart as a reference to find out what kinds of tools and equipment your air compressor can handle. Most air tools run at 90 to 100 psi but there CFM requirements can vary dramatically. For example a die grinder only requires 4 CFM while a disc sander needs around 20 CFM to operate effectively. Both of these air tools are rated at 90 PSI. Its a common misconception that pressure or engine horsepower determines what an air compressor can run. Really, its the CFM that will make you or break you. So if you are running out to buy some air tools look no further than this chart to make sure your shop air compressor can handle it.

I am looking for a portable gas air compressor to use around farm. I need one that is relatively easy to move around but I also need more power than your typical small portable air compressor. I would need to be able to run an impact wrench, nail gun and other air tools.

I think a good gas air compressor for you to consider is the Ingersoll Rand 8 gallon, 5.5 horsepower wheel barrow air compressor. This type of gas air compressor is referred to as "wheel barrow" because a wheel is mounted in between the 2 tanks and it has handles on the other end. This enables you to move it around like a wheel barrow. This unit is large enough to power most air tools and has a good size air tank. Its a good compromise between size and power. The wheel barrow design allows it to be moved around a job site with ease and its has large 5.5 horsepower gas engine to power it.

I am looking to purchase a new plasma cutter and I want to know who is a reputable manufacturer of quality welding equipment. Basically, I who is the industry leader and has been around a long time.

We can easily recommend the Miller Company of Wisconsin. This company has been around for nearly 80 years, and in that time, has grown from its humble beginnings as a tiny one man operation that sold welding equipment and cutting gear into one of the largest and most important producers and sellers of all kinds of cutting equipment around the world, including their impressive lines of Miller Plasma Cutter tools. They have a long track record of producing really nice welding equipment over the years and they are not going anywhere.
For Christmas, I am thinking about out fitting my garage. A little present for my self. I love to tinker around with my old pick up truck and do little odd jobs. I really want to have some basic air tools and a portable air compressor. Preferably, I want a model that I can easily move around but I also want at least a 30 gallon tank. What is the best way for me to go?

This holiday season, we are offering the Garage Mechanics Dream Kit. This is a packaged deal that is meant to set up the home owner with an air compressor and some basic air tools. We are construction company and obviously spend a lot of time working outdoors. In our particular industry we work with hazardous chemical that can burn the eyes and irritate the skin. Winter is here and I am concerned about the solution in our portable eye wash stations freezing when temperature drops. We are required to have our eye wash station at least 40 feet from our work area and that means it will be sitting out in the open away from a heat source. What is a good option for us?

The best option for you is the Porta Stream III heated portable eye wash station. This unit is made from durable plastic and can hold up to 15 gallons of solution. This should meet most specs you run into. It also has a 600 watt, 110 volt thermostatically controlled heaters for indoor and outdoor use. This will prevent the solution from freezing and making your portable eye wash station useless. This unit also comes with an insulated cover that contains the heat and protects it from over spray.
What is the difference between a tactical LED flashlight and just a plain old regular flashlight? I am work in law enforcement and I am needing a durable flashlight that can withstand the rigors of my profession.

Tactical LED Flashlights have taken the average LED flashlight to a whole new level of quality and utility. A tactical LED flashlight will come standard with some extra features that you generally do not find in a conventional flashlight. For example, you would have the ability to switch between a wide angle beam and the focused setting. The wide angle setting in great for searching a larger a area and the focused beam really puts an intense light into a confined area.
Another one of the main adavantages of a tactical LED flashlight is its robust construction. These lights are designed to withstand a serious impact and keep on working.
On construction job sites having an emergency eye wash station is critical to the safety of your workers and also may be required by law in some states. However, the reality is that it may not be practical to hook up a permanently mounted eye wash shower. What do you do? Well, there are several options that are worth looking at. The first option is to mount bottles of eye wash solution that can be squirted into your eyes to flush out some chemical or other irritant. This is the easiest and most cost effective choice. However, you may be required to have an eye wash station that can flush for a sustained 15 minutes. This can present a challenge in an area where a water source is not available. The Fendall PortaStream II may be your best bet. This eye wash station can hold 16 gallons of Eyesaline solution and will flush for the required 15 minutes. It comes with a carrying handle and made from a durable plastic. It is the ideal emergency eye eash station for the remote construction job site.
If you are looking for an air tool that can easily cut through sheet metal and perform a wide range of cutting jobs, look no further than a reciprocating air saw. Most of us are familiar with the cordless or corded variety found in your tool kit but the air powered version is mainly know to auto body shops and the industrial market. The air saw deserves a second look if you do not already own one. These little workhorses can produce 10,000 cycles per minute and cut through metal up to 16 gauge. An air saw is also much lighter and more powerful than its electric cousin. All you need is access to an air compressor and some air hose. Air tools generally boast more power than electric versions of the same tool and generally are more durable. So next time you need to cut some sheet metal, grab an air saw and start cutting!
If you are trying to decide what type of GPS system to buy for your personal use, there has never been more options out there. Just take a drive on your local highway and you will see lots of the portable GPS units mounted on the front windshield with a suction cup. These are much more cost effective alternative to the expensive units that come factory installed on new cars. However, these units are only practical inside of car and not really meant to be hand carried. Hence, the latest line of Garmin PDA GPS units. These handy devices build on the already Palm OS platform and add in the convenience of Global Positioning Satellites. With these, you can have the best of both worlds. A Garmin PDA GPS will mount in your car and you can remove it to use as a handheld device as well. Garmin is the leader in handheld and auto GPS systems. So it was a natural fit for them to produce a hybrid unit that can do both jobs well.
