This totally unofficial blog features Washington, D.C. area news and views. Sat, 06 Sep 2008 21:07:00 +0200 Excerpted from National Weather Service - Baltimore/Washington:
...CENTER OF HANNA MOVING AWAY FROM THE REGION...HEAVY RAINS HAVE ENDED BUT FLOODING CONTINUES... Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:05:00 +0200 UPDATE: The Georgetown/Howard football game has been POSTPONED to Sunday, September 7 at 1 p.m. due to Tropical Storm Hanna.
---- The weekend's Washington, D.C. area college football action is highlighted by a first ever clash between the Georgetown Hoyas and Howard Bison. The scheduled Sunday afternoon clash will be the first ever meeting between these sole D.C. based Division I football squads and the first ever D-1 D.C. football meeting of any kind since 1950. Both the Bison and Hoyas have struggled through losing seasons in recent years, Georgetown's record more the worse for wear. The first of a four year series for what's being called the D.C. Cup serves as the season opener for both schools. Kickoff time is set for 1 p.m. at Howard's Greene Stadium. The game will be webcast via Howard-Bison.com with tape delayed TV Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. on MASN. In other area action, the Navy Midshipmen are at Ball State (Friday 7 p.m., ESPN, WFED/1050), Virginia Tech hosts Furman (Saturday @ 1:30 p.m., ACCSelect, WTEM/980), Virginia hosts Richmond (3:45 p.m., ESPNU, WTNT/570) and the Maryland Terrapins will be at Middle Tennessee State (7 p.m., CSN, WJFK/106.7). Links: Howard Bison, Georgetown Hoyas, Washington Post Fri, 05 Sep 2008 03:59:00 +0200 The Washington Redskins opening season game against the New York Giants ended on the nose at 10:00 p.m. EDT, avoiding a conflict on NBC with John McCain's acceptance speech from the Republican National Convention. As for the result of the Redskins game, the less said about it the better.... again.
Thu, 04 Sep 2008 23:01:00 +0200 After its early start to the preseason, the Washington Redskins franchise stands ready as one of two teams to open the 2008 National Football League season. The Redskins hope to regain their early preseason form this early Thursday evening at the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
Washington is reeling off two straight embarrassing losses and inept performances by the offensive starting lineup to close out exhibition play. What remains unclear is what portions of new head coach Jim Zorn's West Coast offense have been kept in hiding until this point. On the defensive side, the top question for the 'Skins remains the status of defensive end Jason Taylor. The all-pro sack specialist remains officially "questionable' coming into the game but one imagines that he'll try to tough it out to extend his consecutive games streak. The late word is that Taylor has been penciled into the starting lineup. The telecast time is 7 p.m. on NBC (WRC/4) television and WTEM/980 radio. Links: AP via Yahoo, The Sports Network Thu, 04 Sep 2008 14:59:00 +0200 Tropical Storm Hanna is currently forecast to track east of the Washington, D.C. area according to the National Hurricane Center. While the exact center of the storm is forecast to move across the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware shorelines, Hanna may still be close enough to bring tropical rain and winds across metro Washington.
Capital Weather Gang currently expects significant rain with 20-40 mph sustained winds during Saturday. Tropical storm force winds may be expected further east along the forecast track of the storm. The combination of rain and wind could bring more than a few power outages across the region. Links: Capital Weather Gang, WTTG/5 Thu, 04 Sep 2008 10:16:00 +0200 Gov. Sarah Palin (R - Alaska) emerged unflinching at the Republican National Convention after a week of attacks, many of which proved pseudo-sexist, against herself and her family. Barring one verbal slip in reference to Harry Reid's Senate position, Palin's speech effectively poked holes in Barack Obama's campaign and built up an own emotional connection of her own to undecideds and her own social conservative base.
In retrospect, the past week was very poorly played by many of my fellow online Democrats. Once Daily Kos et al made Sarah Palin the electoral centerpiece with a series of increasingly ludicrous attacks, they gave her the platform to reset the contest in Republican terms... which she did. Sarah Palin has now become a soap opera heroine and America loves its soap opera heroines. My party has to get away from its nonsensical focus on Palin and refocus the election on the wrecked economy, the one sure winning issue among all others for Team Obama. Any other path will lose my vote and countless others for good. Thu, 04 Sep 2008 08:41:00 +0200 TV coverage: The Washington Redskins game at the New York Giants will air on NBC nationally. The feed will be carried on WRC/4 in the Washington, D.C. area, WBAL/11 in Baltimore, Md. & WNBC/4 in metro New York, N.Y.
(Note - NBC coverage of the game will continue to its conclusion, regardless of a potential conflict with Sen. John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. McCain is expected to delay his speech in the event of a football overrun, reports TVNewser.) Radio coverage: WTEM/980 (ESPN 980) will air Thursday's game as the Redskins Radio flagship station. Red Zebra's WWXT/92.7, WWXX/94.3, WTNT/570 & WWRC/1260 will simulcast the broadcast. Other stations to air the game include WWEG/106.9 (Frederick), WAGE/1200 (Leesburg), WGRQ/95.9 (Colonial Beach), WSMD/98.3 (Mechanicsville) and WNAV/1430 (Annapolis). WXTR/730 will air Spanish language coverage. Sirius channel 126 will air the Redskins radio feed, channel 127 the Giants radio feed and channel 124 the national Westwood One feed. Tue, 02 Sep 2008 21:01:00 +0200 While attention was distracted elsewhere this early week by Hurricane Gustav, the new Tropical Storm Hanna emerged as a threat to the U.S. East Coast. Hanna remains nearly stationary or drifting as of late Tuesday but is expected to eventually strengthen back to hurricane status and strike late week somewhere along the southeast U.S. coast.
The concern expressed by Capital Weather Gang is that a rapid track northward after landfall could threaten heavy tropical rains, strong winds and or scattered severe storms & tornadoes in the Washington, D.C. area by late Friday or Saturday. Hanna could still be a minimal tropical storm or tropical depression by the time it reaches the Mid-Atlantic region. Not to belabor the obvious at this point but the Hanna situation will bear further watching as the week progresses. Link: Capital Weather Gang Tue, 02 Sep 2008 20:03:00 +0200 The Virginia Tech Hokies established early control of their neutral site season opener in Charlotte but were unable to fend off a feisty East Carolina comeback, falling 27-22. East Carolina returned a blocked fourth quarter punt for the winning score over the #17 ranked Virginia Tech squad.
In other games, the Maryland Terrapins struggled to defeat FCS (I-AA) foe Delaware 14-7 in a battle marked by the pulling of starting Terrapins quarterback Jordan Steffy. The Virginia Cavaliers were blown out at home by the #3 USC Trojans, 52-7. The one true shining light came from the Navy Midshipmen who didn't need their usual starting quarterback to beat the I-AA Towson Tigers, 41-13. Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:36:00 +0200 Organized Minor League Baseball has ended its regular season with two Washington, D.C. area teams set to begin playoff play in their respective leagues, the Bowie Baysox in the AA level Eastern League and the Potomac Nationals in the A+ level Carolina League.
The Bowie Baysox, a longtime affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, won the title of the Eastern League's Southern Division to qualify for postseason play. The Baysox will face the divisional second place Akron Aeros in a best of five Eastern League semifinal series. The Potomac Nationals, based in Woodbridge, won both halves of the season in the Carolina League's Northern Division to make the postseason for the first time as a Washington Nationals affiliate. The Wilmington Blue Rocks will oppose the P-Nats in a best of five semifinal series. Last year's champion Frederick Keys did not qualify for the postseason. Meanwhile, independent league play continues with the expansion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs still in playoff contention for an Atlantic League bid. Fresh off the battle for the starting qb position won by Jordan Steffy, the Maryland Terrapins open home play this afternoon against FCS power Delaware. The Fightin' Blue Hens lost qb Joe Flacco off last year but still come into Byrd Stadium as a potential threat, ranked #9 in the lower division once known as I-AA. In addition to ESPNU, the main ESPN channel will picked up the telecast in lieu of its previously slotted game being moved up by Hurricane Gustav. (3:45 p.m., ESPNU/ESPN, WJFK/106.7) The Virginia Cavaliers will face the toughest challenge by far for area teams, heavy underdogs at home against the vaunted passing game of the #3 ranked USC Trojans. ABC will televise the game regionally with ESPN2 picking up coverage elsewhere in the country. (3:30 p.m., WJLA/ABC/7, WTNT/570). The Navy Midshipmen may have the easiest go of things hosting the FCS division Towson Tigers in the regular season head coaching debut for Ken Niumatalolo (3:30 p.m., CBSCS, WFED/1050). Elsewhere, the #17 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies travel to Charlotte for an allegedly neutral site opener against the East Carolina Pirates (12 p.m., ESPN, WTEM/980). As far as the two Division I teams actually based in the District of Columbia, the Georgetown Hoyas and Howard Bison are both off, awaiting the matchup against each other next Saturday. Fri, 29 Aug 2008 22:23:00 +0200 The political world was rocked off its axis as Gov. Sarah Palin (Alaska) was chosen by Sen. John McCain as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, pending convention approval. Palin had been believed to only be on the fringes of McCain's VP shortlist at most. The selection was a clear play to both conservatives and to ex-Hillary Clinton candidacy supporters.
Palin is a first-term governor of Alaska, noted for her state government reform focus and support of oil drilling in a section of the ANWR refuge. She generally follows the conservative line on most issues including abortion, though she self-identifies more as a pro-woman feminist complete with a membership in the Feminists for Life. (Disclaimer: This blogger has a paid membership in the FFL.) On a second side note, Palin also won a Republican candidate poll here on DCAbloob several months ago. That said, it was clearly the effort of more overt pro-Palin bloggers that actually pushed her into the political consciousness. I had thought that Palin would make a good counterpart to Joe Biden but that a controversy over her firing of a state public safety commissioner would take her out of the running. So much for that thought. At any rate, John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin and apparent reembrace of a mainstream reform agenda bodes well for the Republican ticket. Whatever else may be said, one conclusion now must be made.... we're not in Bush/Cheney land anymore. Links: Fox News, Washington Times, Washington Post Fri, 29 Aug 2008 10:24:00 +0200 The Washington Redskins starting offense was ineffectual yet again in a 24-3 preseason finale loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Washington finished with a 3 win, 2 loss record but with prospects of a successful start to the regular season severely shaken.
Plans for the Redskins offense to only play one series were quickly altered when that one series turned out to be a one play deflected interception to a Jacksonville player. The next two drives were impotent three-and-outs leaving starting quarterback Jason Campbell one for three for the night. The starting defense was kept off the field for the Redskins this week, being rested in anticipation of next Thursday's league regular season at the New York Giants. It will take more than rest to fix what ails the Washington Redskins at this point. Head coach Jim Zorn now has less than a week to figure out the answer. Links: Washington Post Fri, 29 Aug 2008 09:48:00 +0200 Sen. John McCain's choice for a vice-presidential running mate has still not leaked out as of early Thursday morning, scant hours before his scheduled midday selection announcement in Dayton, Ohio.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty (Minnesota) had been the overwhelming choice as McCain's safety pick for a running mate as the night started. Surprisingly though, Pawlenty's odds have not solidified to this point. For what it is worth, the FiveThirtyEight blog reports that the selection is not Pawlenty. Ex-Gov. Mitt Romney (Massachusetts) had been my predicted pick in the Hedgehog Report's contest (I'd actually win the contest if that verifies). That said, Romney comes off as the political equivalent of soap opera character Brad Carlton, a snake who claims any set of principles and loyalties that boosts him closer to power. Even with a contest win, the selection of Romney would be sorely disappointing. Late net speculation has focused on Gov. Sarah Palin (Alaska), based on tracked charter flights over the last day from Alaska to Ohio. The DCAbloob poll winner would be an absolute stunner in terms of news headlines if nothing else. The VP trading sites though have not reflected a surge in Palin odds as of yet. The buzz has died off for the other rumored candidates. My best guess (only a guess) is that the leak of the VP selection will come during the Eastern zone airings of the morning news shows. Please stand by.... Links: FiveThirtyEight, The Hedgehog Report Fri, 29 Aug 2008 04:04:00 +0200 The Washington Redskins preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars ended at about 9:52 p.m. EDT, easily avoiding an overrun conflict on NBC with Barack Obama's acceptance speech from the Democratic National Convention. As for the result of the Redskins game, the less said about it the better.
Thu, 28 Aug 2008 16:02:00 +0200 After a debacle of a performance last week, the Washington Redskins hold to recover their bearings in one final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The ineffectual starting offense, propelled by an even more ineffectual offensive line, will likely have all of one series to redeem itself before being rested.
The major curiosity for this final preseason game will be former Redskins defensive coach Gregg Williams now working the Jaguars sideline in the same role. Of course, with starters being rested for virtually the entirety of the game, a curiosity is all it will prove to be this week. Ultimately, the most interesting question may prove to be what NBC would do if the game overruns into the time allocated for Barack Obama's acceptance speech. My guess (just a guess) is that NBC would switch to Obama though where that would leave the Redskins telecast is not clear. At any rate, the start time for the Redskins game is 7 p.m. EDT on NBC (WRC/4) & WTEM/980 radio. Link: The Sports Network Thu, 28 Aug 2008 06:01:00 +0200 TV coverage: The Washington Redskins preseason game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars will air on NBC nationally. The feed will be carried on WRC/4 in the Washington, D.C. area, WTLV/12 in metro Jacksonville, Fla.
(Note - NBC coverage of the game may be affected in the event of a conflict with Sen. Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. The backup plan for such a scenario, if any, is not known.) Radio coverage: WTEM/980 (ESPN 980) will air Thursday's game as the Redskins Radio flagship station. The Red Zebra operated WWXT/92.7, WWXX/94.3, WXTR/730, WTNT/570 & WWRC/1260 will simulcast the broadcast. Other stations to air the game include WWEG/106.9 (Frederick), WAGE/1200 (Leesburg), WGRQ/95.9 (Colonial Beach), WSMD/98.3 (Mechanicsville) and WNAV/1430 (Annapolis). Sirius channel 126 will air the Redskins radio feed, channel 153 the Jaguars radio feed. Wed, 27 Aug 2008 23:14:00 +0200 Ex-Governor Mark Warner (D-Virginia) gave the keynote address at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, receiving only a small fraction of the attention of his keynote predecessor from four years ago. As Warner himself noted, his innocuous address was largely overshadowed by the attention (mostly positive) for the later speech by ex-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Warner gave a mild nonpartisan-themed endorsement of Obama with few negative barbs directed towards John McCain, a stark contrast to the other flame thrower addresses against McCain from the podium Tuesday night. The governor turned virtually certain future senator also recounted his own life experiences on the forefront of the cellular phone industry and as a governor of Virginia. It was a well told story that few noted or even remembered the next day. Links: Washington Post, Los Angeles Times Wed, 27 Aug 2008 17:21:00 +0200 The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay are set to impact the Mid-Atlantic region, including the Washington, D.C. area, over the next several days. Rains from the ex-tropical storm have already overspread North Carolina up to central Virginia as of Wednesday morning. A blocking high pressure system is slowing down the progress of the rain but it should nonetheless reach the D.C. area later Wednesday or Wednesday night.
Periods of rain showers are forecast across the area from late Wednesday through Friday or Saturday with thunderstorms also possible during the period. With the region having a rain deficit of several inches for August, any extra moisture from the Fay remnants should be a help. The only potential problem would be if the heaviest flooding rains don't stay along the Appalachians as the Baltimore Sun notes. Links: Capital Weather Gang, Baltimore Sun |
